Can you name an NHL player who was never the same after an incident? 🤔
My man erik karlsson
I remember when patchea for mtl got ran into the bench end pole got his neck or something broken. Wasnt the same for the team.
Eric lindros
a little early but Patrick Laine.
Cory Schneider. First 3 years in NJ he was a legit top 5 goalie. Then he got a couple of knee injuries and was never the same.
I had no clue about the James Sheppard’s ATV incident. This explains a lot.
I didn't either. I remember seeing him play in Worcester and wondering what his deal was.
Yours and Okposo's stories are inspiring! I didn't realize that he went through that on Buffalo and that makes me miss him more :(
I Love Barzy, Hopefully Lane Lambert will fix the system and give us more offense! Barzy would most probably be a 100 point player on most teams.
Go read about when it happened. He was in the icu for a while, on all kinds of medications to keep his brain functioning, it was a crazy story. Such a shame. Ik people will always say the sabres overpaid him but that injury derailed his career. This past year was awesome to watch though, he looked like a completely different player
I hope now that people understand that trap hockey and totally defensively focused hockey doesn't work in today's nhl
Rob, my man!
Hold your head up high for seeking out help when you need it most. I am proud to be one of your subscribers on your channel. You always share an interesting stories about real life situations that happen to our hockey idols. We all look forward to new content drops from you. However, don’t ever prioritize satisfying our wishes at the expense of your own health. It’s not worth it, unless creating these videos is a form of self care.
Very happy to hear that you are thriving once again, Rob! Thank you for sharing your strength. :) Excellent video drop once again. 🤘🏽
Rob, you brought me to tears with your openness.
Hearing what happened to Kyle Okposo was exactly what can happen to our brain with even subtle trauma.
In your case, the symptoms were more gradual, but in both scenarios it is extreme;y debilitating.
As a sufferer of at least 10 concussions over my 62 years I am so proud of people like you and Kyle to talk with people and accept our frailties.
THANK YOU for being so honest. 💔
Thanks for the support brother (:
Rob you always have such engaging videos, they’re never boring and makes you look at the game we all know and love from a different perspective. Keep up the great work
Thanks buddy. I appreciate it
I wonder if EJ would have stuck around with the Blues if it wasn't for that injury. As an Avs fan he has been a huge part of locker room chemistry and between him and Landy they really held the team up through the dark times.
I still remember being in the car and hearing about Johnson's golf injury...felt like the curse of the Blues at the time as his future looked very bleak immediately after that
Glad you took the time to take care of yourself, Rob! Keep a lookout for signs in the future. I've been there too.
Appreciate the content man glad ur heads in a better place
Injuries happen to everyone, but the results are never the same. I had a friend who worked in high-powered Toronto, office job, quit before she went crazy. Been a waitress for the last 20 years and got married, had two kids, says her life is so, so much better.
I struggle with anxiety too, so thank you for sharing your story, it is very inspiring
Glad you’re back on track, Rob. Mental health is so important and we’re lucky to live in a time where it’s finally being taken seriously.
Thanks for being real about your mental health, Rob! ✊🏽
Appreciate it!
great videos man been following you for a couple years and you have some of the best hockey stuff pm CZcams keep up the great work!!
Your story must be told and I am glad you did. For too many people, depression/anxiety is a condition that affects only "weak" people. My career ended because of chronic depression. I studied for many years, worked hard, got promoted to management but one day, I could not function anymore. I then had to confront my condition and accept its consequences. Mental conditions are very difficult to accept, mainly because of the stigma attached to them. Thank you for sharing - it is the only way to get rid of predjudices.
Great work on the content. I still go back and watch old episodes. Great research! All the best to you!
Love the content Rob. Thank you for opening up, we love you man ❤️
I wouldn't say that the NHL is strict about head contact, they're strict on paper but there are a lot of holes.
Thanks for opening up! Love the channel and you're a gem of a person ❤️
Appreciate you brother. Glad youre doing well. Appreciate your transparency and ability to provide a listening ear.
I’m glad to hear you’re doing better buddy, you make great content. I’m glad you sought up and tried to do things to better yourself. Mental health is very serious, if it isn’t there, your ceiling of potential isn’t even in the discussion. So i’m really
happy to know you’re doing better, keep up the great hockey content :)
Love your channel and even though I don't watch every video, I do enjoy the ones I do watch!! Keep up the good work and don't burn out this time. You're mental health is far more important than putting out videos every week
Like you said we don’t know what happens behind the scenes. I can’t fathom what you had to go through. Great job getting through it. You and okposo show that there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. Keep it up. You’ve got this
I’m glad that you’re back on track rob, keep up your good work ❤️
Thank you for sharing that touching story Rob
Hey Rob! Thank you for sharing ♥️ I love your videos / content ! They’re happy surprises when I open CZcams app in the morning and I see you posted 😁 A good start to a new day

Thanks for opening up dude! I went through burnout from a combo of school/work/personal life stuff, so its cool to hear someone else opening up about it. Glad you addressed it and are feeling better 😊Love your channel, it has really helped me learn more about the nhl outisde my own team. Cheers man 💙
Appreciate you dude!
Glad to hear you’re doing great Rob love the vids keep up the good work!
What you said around 10:25 about how people don’t know what it’s truly like unless they’ve experienced it is so true.
Glad your good man and your videos are awesome! Keep it up buddy! 🙌🏻
Thank you so much for that video. Best video yet. Your vulnerability at the end is very much appreciated. Much love.
After loosing my entire family 2 yrs ago I believe there is no cure for what I have.no drug no doctor can help me.racing and hockey saved my life in more ways anybody can ever know.ive been living life instead of jus surviving ever since.start livin robtalkhockey
Rob I love your content. Had similar issues as you and I lost my father and both grandpas in a six month period. 2021 was the worst but I addressed it as well and doing better.
You've got a great channel, Rob. There are not many CZcamsrs who consistently post quality NHL content. You are among the 1%. Hat tip to you, sir!
Thanks brother. I appreciate that
Glad you are doing better and love the content. Work/life balance is always rough and takes time to find what works for you... even then you have to be vigilant because little things can come along that you did not think would upset your system, but they do. You just have to be ready to take that step back, ask for help and take some time for yourself when you can get it. Good luck going forward!
Keep up the amazing work, I look forward to more videos!
Thanks for the little motivation at the end, it warmed my heart a bit.. Not a lot of influencers cares about the mental healt of their audience 😌 Thanks for these words and I promise you I won't give up 🙏 and by the way I really like your content, great quality, clear talking, good informations, lot of pics for visual people etc.👌 and of course your personnality as well ! You clearly deserving more followers 😋👌
As someone who felt the same way when I used to make videos, I’m proud to see that you’ve made it this far with your channel. Thank you so much for always making these great videos :)
Thanks buddy (:
Good to hear that your doing better ur my favorite CZcamsr love ur vids❤️
Sending love my dude! Thanks for sharing!
You’re a legend. Thanks for opening up. I needed that
🙏🏼🙏🏼 love this mental health conversation and like always the hockey content 👍🏻
Thank you for the story on Colorado's EJ. I never knew about this until now.
It kinda falls in the same off-ice accident category : Joe Sakic never got an on-ice farewell due to him missing the rest of his final season after hurt his hand with a snow blower
James Sheppard was an nhl 08 legend
Your doing great bud! 🔥👌
wow i didnt know that about okposo, i suffered a concussion in 2018 and immediately started having major anxiety that i never had before then. i met okposo in 2016 after i played a hs hockey game at the colleseum he is sucha nice guy, one of my favorite players of all time easily
Great video Rob.
You’re one of my favorite CZcamsr cause I’m a huge hockey fan I just know that people are big fans of you
I had no clue about Okposo, but I'm really glad to now. I feel like it goes a long way with what Lehner has been fighting for in regards to player treatment and mental health. I can't recall if it was one of your videos or another CZcamsr who talked about players improving after getting therapy and some teams now requiring and hiring therapists specifically for players to maintain mental health.
I think it also goes to show, people talk about depression like this nebulous disease but then the Okposo injury shows how physical damage can have these life altering mental effects, and that sometimes, if not often times, depression is a symptom of a physical problem. I often tell people if they have sudden onset depression, get your liver and kidneys looked at. Did you take a fall recently. What are potential physical problems that could be more easily solved that would potentially actually cure the depression.
Take it from me too , tore my right acl two years straight and even tho I’ve done sports therapy
I’m no longer as athletic as I was two years ago due to this injury. After the second acl tear having to redo the same surgery and therapy again . I fell into depression self isolation and well alcohol didn’t help . Get help guys and take your meds
Something similar happened to me like Okposo's situation except I developed OCD. I was never like that before until I got a concussion playing dodgeball. I rolled my ankle when I landed and my head bounced off the floor when I fell. Ever since then I always have to have things a certain away or else I get pretty restless. Which leads to agitation. I have to have my clothes, books, blurays and video games organized in a specific manner. And just a bunch of other things. It really gets to me sometimes that I have to be like that. It's ruined some relationships because people have a hard time tolerating me.
As an Avs fan, I can honestly say that I don’t believe we’d have won the cup last year wo EJ. That poor kid, he was hurt every post season for like 3 years straight. And we got eliminated in the 2nd round every year. That dude is MASSIVE in the success of the Avs and the incredible development of both Sam girard and cale makar. I fucking love that dude man. I was so hype when he decided to come back for this year
I am also a member of the 2 bad knee club. Also from playing hockey. And wrestling inmates but that's a different story lol
The burnout is a fickle bish, glad you made it out homie 🔥🙏👏
Whats insane is i never think of eric johnson being drafted by St louis. I thought he was drafted by the avs
if Buffalo plays ANYTHING like they did in the back end of last season, they are a playoff team - coming from a sad rangers fan & we love your content and insight into the hockey world, thanks for being you
Keep it up love your vids
People don't understand how much a blow to the head can re-wire your brain even a small bump can flip a switch like this
And I'm telling you, I was never an athlete but had a few "normal" hits to the head here and there, and sometimes wonder if things I feel are because of it. But that might just be "in my head" so to speak.
I definitely understand when those symptoms come from stress. I'm home sick with covid and actually glad, just because it means a week off from my hectic schedule.
Good vid bro
I never knew about barzal. Never really followed draft picks until barry trotz and lou. I love barzal. Must watch tv when he’s on the ice.
Your the G.O.A.T my guy much love❤️
I’ve had multiple (>10) concussions. They’re all life changing and absolutely horrible. Glad you’re doing better bud. Hang in there.
I know it's just...Erik Johnson...but man, Blues fans really had hope that year. Yeah it wouldn't have made a difference, but we were seriously let down.
Way to go rob. You got this.
Erik Johnson despite having that injury he truly was elite coming over to the Avs prime EJ he wasn’t going to impress you in scoring but wow could he defend. Also the longest tenured Avs player currently so if you had to ask me I’d say Johnson has definitely turned out a special career in Colorado. And he finally got a ring
Facts man this guy is like hockey 🏒 card monologue and all I have to do is look at my cards and he reads 📚 every one of em back
I always wondered why Barzal fell so much in that draft, crazy to know that wrestling can actually be real
EJ the condor is a warrior. He will always be an avs favorite.
I lived with depression and anxiety for 25 years before I sought help. The 10 years since haven't been easy, but I am doing better.
Great content
Awesome vid
Erik Johnson has had a really good career, not a #1 overall pick expected career, but he's been damn solid and just won the cup.
- Dany Heatley after the car crash in 2003 (he would have great seasons in Ottawa)
- Erik Johnson after the golf accident in 2008
- Matt Duchene after the Uber beef in 2018 (while it would not derail his career as evidenced last season in Nashville, it derailed his career in Ottawa)
- Slava Voynov after the domestic violence scandal in 2014
- Nikolai Khabibulin after being convicted of DUI in 2010, preceding a career-worst season in Edmonton, not to mention Joe Arpaio…
- Ivan Fedotov, most recently, following his arrest in Russia (not getting into politics)
- Nail Yakupov after 2013 for disobeying his coaches
- Tony DeAngelo in 2021 after fighting Igor Shesterkin. He got better in Carolina.
- John Tavares after the “Captain Crunch” curse by the Toronto Sun in 2021 (?)
- Cory Schneider, along with basically every star goaltender who underwent hip surgery
- Mike Danton in 2004 for reasons that should be obvious
Worth mentioning for Okposo’s case that each season 2018-19 to 2020-21 was a 30-point pace in 82 games
Keep your head up bro
EJ definitely didn't "derail his entire career", that's a gross exaggeration. He undoubtedly would've had a much easier time had he not injured himself in that accident, it's certainly caused him to miss a lot of games. But he's still playing 15 years later on the best d-core in the NHL and was a rock this past year. He played 77 games and still managed to put up 25 points despite being 3rd pairing and not playing on the PP all season. He was huge in the playoffs too, a big part of the Cup run.
Surprised Dany Heatley wasn't on this list. He may not have gotten injured but he was never the same after that crash
hi rob, i love your videos. greetings from switzerland luis.
Thanks buddy (:
2010 Olympics curse: Ryan Miller
Somedays you're the golf cart, other times you're Erik Johnson.
Yeah, the knee is a scary beast. I lost my hockey scholarship to UofM after blowing out my knee in a freak ass-kicking incident.
Anyone who thinks keeping things to ones self is the best option, its not. From a man who has had issues with his mental health the best advise i was given was to talk more about all my feelings. Feeling tired say it to someone, feeling happy say it to someone, feeling nervous just say you're a little nervous to someone, feeling excited say it and if you are feeling down you will say it to someone. The more you talk about all the other feelings, good ones especially the easier it becomes to talk about the bad.
Fun fact James Shepard is from lower sackville Nova Scotia 😁
EJ is still pretty solid. Definitely contributed to the Avs' championship this year.
Here we go
Rob, you need to cover Boston Bruin 2nd round pick Jonathan Girard. He was an upcoming Star until he crashed his Car which ended his career.
i fucking love ej. i never really think about him as former first overall but i guess i can understand how people would say he had a "disappointing" career. the condor is a beaut though.
Concussions did same thing to me. Very weird. It was like a drug trip.
RTH is the best deep dive in hockey as always... Ive got an ACL surgery now i got bad back lazy knees and i take 40 pound in 2 years this s*** is hard on the body
I got serveral hard concision and when im in hole i would ike to have a light switch for the sun hockey player are beast
Thank You ;
Love u rob
Erik Johnson is fine and we in Colorado are happy to have him
Sheppard's playing for my local team rn. Didnt know that is why a former 1st is playing in europe. :/
It's not even just concussions though bro, CTE is real and it doesn't require a concussion. Let's end hitting in hockey!
Hockey players tend to do more harmless, almost childish things when they first come into the league. These young football players have been taking it way too far.
What even was that ending involving Erik Johnson and Google Translate?
