  • I take to the RB skies in the FW190 A-1, looking to see what this plane's capable of when it achieves an energy advantage. To be honest I didn't expect it to be very good, but I was pleasantly surprised...

    0:30 Also makes the experience more enjoyable as a whole c:
    3:38 Don't be afraid to use WEP more when climbing
    4:50 Closing the throttle in short dive BnZ attacks can allow your target to get a few shots off or pull a reversal. In the Fw, I always just stay at 100% throttle unless I'm already traveling at 600kph or above. Even then I might still maintain 100% throttle in a dive because you don't really have to worry about ripping your wings in the Fw-190A1. All the Fw's have very sturdy wings.
    7:30 You tend to use long, strafing bursts. Try to go for more accurate, much shorter bursts. If you only hold down the trigger for 0.25-0.5 seconds at a time, it'll feel like you have a lot more ammo and you'll be achieving the same effects. The only time you should be spraying is if you're attacking a bomber.
    8:46 Your machine guns are definitely worth using, they won't do damage nearly as fast but sustained fire with your mg's (sustained fire is something you can afford to do in this case) is pretty effective.
    10:00 That's not necessarily the case, while they definitely could go for altitude advantage and that would be the smart play, it's not guaranteed that they will.
    10:15 20 minutes is more than enough for most missions, 30 minutes of fuel is the most you should ever need. Any more than 30 minutes will just slow you down.
    11:46 You're really lucky here, nobody should ever get this close to an enemy airfield unless supported by their whole team, or unless they have a death wish.

      Hello
      Great analysis !!
      I'am trying to start in planes in AB mode. Using a FW-190 how do you defend of an attack when the other plane has an energy advantage ?

    • @GumMagnum
      @GumMagnum Před 8 lety +4

      F Igoillo I'm assuming you're talking about the A1? Generally speaking you want to keep an eye out so you don't get into such a situation to begin with, but if you do, then you have to pay attention to how close they are from you. You don't ever want to dogfight in any Fw unless you're very confident in your knowledge of both your plane and the other player's plane. Even then, the strong suit of any Focke Wulf is it's BnZ capabilities.
      If the other plane is >5km from you, you can try to turn away from them and keep climbing. Most pilots won't follow you unless you're completely alone or the last player on your team.
      If the other plane is 5-3km away, you can try to level out and increase the distance (provided you're at or above 3000m altitude). Run towards allies if they give chase. If you're within this distance, you should have plenty of room to accelerate before they catch up either way.

      I'll keep in mind your advice. It seems that I choose a difficult plane to start playing Air battles in WT :/

    • @GumMagnum
      @GumMagnum Před 8 lety +4

      F Igoillo I wouldn't necessarily call it difficult, I think it's just a lot different from what most people would come to expect if they only played arcade or haven't flown a thoroughbred energy fighter before.
      There's also the fact that playing BnZ in RB takes a lot of patience and caution. I think the Fw is a lot more forgiving than some energy fighters since it's almost impossible to tear the wings off, but the area where most pilots fail when it comes to flying this machine is self restraint. Pilots who initiate dogfights or get into situations where their only option is to dogfight are the first to come to mind, but there's a lot more to it. I think what it comes down to in the end is just having good awareness of your surroundings and what's going on in the game. If you don't let planes get above your or get the jump on you, you're gonna have a huge leg up in every fight.
      This being said, I'd actually argue that BnZ tactics are significantly easier than dogfighting, at least at higher skill levels. BnZ is a very recursive skill set-you get a energy advantage, you make a pass or dive on your target, and then you use your speed to stay out of their guns and return to a higher altitude. If you fail to kill them at first, you rinse and repeat. It's relatively simple when you compare it to learning the complex maneuvers you'd have to use in a dogfight to be successful, it's much more complicated in my opinion.

      @fernandoi3389 Před 8 lety

      Muddy Fudger Your advice has been very helpful. I'm slowly getting the experience and as you say it's more of patience , caution and self awareness.Still learning each type of plane :/
      Most of the time I get shot down is for forcing an attack when I should have abort and reset or not paying attention to where my BnZ ends ( like in an area saturated with enemy planes )
      I hope that with time I get to be more useful to the team, so far i get many assists and 2 to 4 kills.

      Yep I totally agree - that's the 2nd time I've been in that situation. The first was a year ago, where after RTBing I found myself alone in an F2A-1 vs a Bf109 E-1 and F-1. Came out of it victorious because I had an alt advantage on the E-1, and the F-1 was actually out of ammo with a dying engine having decided not to RTB but instead hang around to try and set me up for his buddy. One of those games that I should have put on youtube, and didn't ;)

  • @cheshireycat9246
    @cheshireycat9246 Před 8 lety +1

    A couple of points to make:
    *Fuel Choice:*
    I would say that 45 minutes a little too much fuel to be bring out with the Fw190 A-1, while the impact of the extra 15 minutes of fuel is marginally on performance. In my experience it is exceedingly rare that 30 minutes of fuel turns out to too little fuel in a typical RB battle.
    Alternatively the 20 minute fuel load for when you play aggressively with your limited MG FF/M cannon ammo and look for a reload early in the match can be a legitimate tactic.
    This is all personal choice and there is pros and cons to each choice so an RB pilot will have to weight it up and decide what suits them best. A pilot comfortable with their fuel choice is better than some second guessing their choice and distracting them from the combat.
    *Climbing:*
    The initial climb is usually pretty decisive in deciding the match, so using your WEP to maximise your climb is quite beneficial and managing your engine temperature carefully can be worth a couple of hundred metres, for the more hardcore a dive into Manuel Engine Control (MEC) can be very rewarding, but it is an overhead that you have to deal with as well and it is more effective in certain planes.
    *Ammo:*
    This really comes down to the individual pilot however I prefer to use stealth for my BnZ planes to give me the largest window of attack as the target can not response to my tracer, especially on planes with low primary weapon loads outs like the Fw190 A-1.
    This again has draw backs as you have to be extremely confident in your knowledge of the gun and drop rate so once more it is balancing the pros and cons to what you feel comfortable with in game.
    A comfortable pilot in a plane with a sub optimum loadout is better than a pilot distracted by the load out choices he has made.
    *Overall:*
    Solid video, I am happy to see a pilot that fully acknowledges that he makes mistakes because we all do and you not only benefit yourself by highlighting them but other watching as well. I look forward to more video and maybe I will run into you in the sky.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      Excellent comments, thanks :)
      I'll certainly use more stealth ammo in the future, I've just got to improve my aim first. You can see that my initial bursts are off target more often than not, and the tracers allow me to correct whereas with stealth I'd simply miss.

    • @cheshireycat9246
      @cheshireycat9246 Před 8 lety +1

      Yes, the switch to stealth is quite a shift and it took me awhile to be able to perform reliably with stealth belts, however what I find now when I use tracer is that I spend so much time focused on the tracer, I find myself distracted from leading. It sort of counter intuitive as the tracer is meant to be helping you lead but I find it to be a little blinding now.
      Overall I consider the switch to stealth to be extremely beneficial but it is hard work and there are certain guns that I hopeless with regardless of the belts.

      @laisy961 Před 8 lety +1

      Great guide! Certainly useful for anyone who are new to RB.
      The only thing I can add is the gun convergence. While what range you pick will depend on preferences, I would recommend using 500m first to get used to leading, then you can adjust the range when you are more familiar with it.

    Great plane to take out in RB. it's a nice balance of firepower and maneuverability/climb-rate. I also recommend the turncoat USBF-109 F4 because you get placed in matchups where your plane can climb fast and surprise your opponents who are not expecting that capability from the US planes. The A7M3 (is that the standard one?) is also fantastic in RB. I also know my squadmates, Korgeth and Slipstream, like the Ki-100 in RB as well. A couple of tips, the fuel amount is not necessary and you should go with the minimum IMHO. Also, get used to using your takeoff flaps more. This will come in handy should you ever take a carrier plane out for a spin and forget to use them only to splash like a newb into the drink ; )

    leave arcade behind and come to the dark side..... air RB.... it may not be as fast paced as arcade but the intensity that can be experienced from even one good kill or dogfight is worth the 5 - 10 minutes of climbing and positioning at the start of the match, in fact i enjoy the climb phase immensely. setting your self up for victory before you even spot the first enemy plane is satisfying in itself. having better discipline and more patience than the enemy is the key to victory in RB as well as skill but i find the former to be the number one insurance against a repair bill....... ive always wondered why you haven't done RB more often as you have an incredibly vast knowledge of energy and ACM. glad to see you giving it a go.

    Someone else put it very rudely, but something you might wish to try and which shouldn't be too hard to adjust to is to put your machine guns on spacebar, and your cannons (or both) on left mouse button. Since I know you play with space as default for all guns, you will already be used to shooting with that and by using short click bursts with the cannons only when you are certain of a nice lined up shot you will conserve more shells. In addition, flying in my 109 F-4 (great plane for this mode) I use the mg's to harass anyone I am chasing with short bursts, and sometimes you can force them to turn to evade the bullets...often in these cases, exposing their profile for a short cannon burst to the wing. Keep making videos I have learned a lot from watching them.

      I do indeed have mappings defined for cannons/machineguns, I'm just not in the habit of using them yet. Old dog, new tricks etc :)In saying that, each occasion in this video where I fired cannon I was at close range & closing fast, usually with a deflection shot - the low altitude P-40 was the only exception as I approached on his six. There wasn't an instance where I was chasing someone & trying to ping them with a more low-percentage firing solution due to distance, and thereby do damage and/or force them to maneuver, but I admit I do need to get used to those keystrokes such that when that situation arises I'm not blasting away with my main guns. I also need to work on shortening the length of my firing bursts when using cannon.

    Conserve cannon ammo by utilizing short bursts against fighters and configuring the keys for large and smaller caliber rounds. Use machine guns when limited on small ammo load on cannons on the fighters such as Fw190A1 and P38 variants. Don't be afraid to WEP even if the engine is getting close to red or if you're going for a Boom on an enemy aircraft. The wings of a Fw are strong enough to keep a sustained dive. Finally, along with using WEP more often, 30 minutes of fuel is a safe bet than 20 minutes of fuel. Long enough for average battles, enough for sustained engagements without having to land to early. Your fuel tank might get hit as well, so 20 minutes is really pushing one's luck.

    Just a general comment to no one in particular: If you're new to RB and want to learn it, IMO it's best to find an experienced RB pilot (that also plays the style you are looking for... bomber... fighter... BnZ'er or turn fighter) and fly with them for a while.
    The other thing i'd suggest is to stick around the 2.0 - 3.3 RB battle rating. Also, pick a plane and stick with it for a while until you get the hang of it.

      Good to hear (read). I was a bit worried there because in your last few videos, you sounded as if you had some more fun with the game again.
      So when you stopped, I was afraid it might have external, serious reasons.
      So getting more into RB didn't revitalize your enjoyment of the game?
      (Last time I tried to get into it, I did it the other way around. Have always been a RB player and then I tried getting into Arcade and I had some initial success and fun, but then things went really sour, hehe.
      The main reason for me to not play anymore is that I have a new job now and don't have enough free time anymore.
      I had played "Armored Warfare" for a while, but don't have the time for that anymore either.)

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 7 lety

      Well, "real life" did get in the way, in the form of a few short-term jobs that kept me away from gaming of any sort from July through October. Got to keep that roof over my head, etc.
      I did meet up with Jengar for another try at RB, his version of which was posted months ago on his channel. My experience though wasn't great. RB simply cannot be played casually, not when you're new to the mode. I realized that I'd need to devote significant time to RB if I was going to get any enjoyment out of it (and material worth showing in videos) and I just didn't have that kind of time available. I still don't.
      And Arcade has been driven into the ground by the developers. That leaves me, and this channel, on the sidelines.

    • @TrangleC
      @TrangleC Před 7 lety +1

      long5hot
      I see.
      I always did play RB casually, but I didn't care about the resulting horrible stats, hehe.
      If I would have cared, I would have rage quit way earlier.
      I just found RB less chaotic, more immersive and generally more interesting than Arcade, even in the better days of Arcade.
      I don't know how the balancing has developed in the last years, but back in my day the biggest problem with RB was just that the "nation vs nation" gameplay aggravated the balancing problems.
      Nobody liked playing against Russians, but because they were so OP and so popular among those who didn't care about balancing, everybody constantly had to play against Russians.
      If it is worry about ruining your stats that keeps you from playing RB, I could offer you the use of my account. As I said, I don't use it anymore and you could use it to get comfortable with RB without damaging the stats on your main account and without the need to unlock everything again.
      I'm far from having unlocked everything, especially since there has been a lot of new stuff since I stopped playing, but I think I was up to tier 4 in all nations (had tier 5 planes unlocked in the German tree) and had at least one or two well trained crews in every nation.
      Also had a bunch of Premium planes, I think at least 1 in every nation.
      If you are interested, tell me and I'll give the account to you.

    • @TrangleC
      @TrangleC Před 7 lety +1

      long5hot
      I understand.
      Single "flavor of the month" planes never bothered me all that much, personally. I made the experience that those are often flown by careless or inexperienced pilots.
      For example the last really good RB battle I had was during the time when the F2A with 50cals was new and was totally dominating low tier matches.
      I was flying a Bf-110 and my whole team pretty much got killed by F2As before I even had the time to set up my first attack run. I was alone against 6 of them and I managed to win the match by doing careful hit and run attacks and picking them off one by one.
      What really frustrated me was the dominance of Russian fighters in tier 3 back in my days (patch 1.3 to 1.4). It just happened every single time that my whole team died and I was alone too, but unlike in that low tier game against those F2As, I had no chance because those Yak-3s, Yak-9s and I-185 would just do things they shouldn't have been able to do.
      I remember being alone against a team of Russians in a FW-190 A-5 and making a strafing run against 4 of them while they were reloading on the runway. 2 were still on the ground and 2 had just taken off. I killed one of those on the ground and tried to speed away, at full speed after making a diving attack from 3000 meters and it took only seconds till the two who just had taken off when I started the attack were actually gaining on me.
      It was totally ridiculous, but stuff like that happened all the time back then.
      And I'm not just whining from the loser's perspective. When I finally had enough and started grinding Russian planes myself, I too did stuff I shouldn't have been able to do in them.
      For example I was in a Yak-3 and faked a headon against a P-47. The P-47 wisely kept flying straight after I evaded his fire, while I turned after him to chase him and when he only was 1.6 km away, I already started gaining on him and caught up to him.
      There was no indication and no reason that something should have been wrong with his engine.
      Granted, were were at very low altitude and Russians are supposed to do well there, but that was just ridiculous.
      I felt really dirty after that kill and stopped playing Russians again.
      My point being that pretty much for the duration of my time playing this game, pretty much all Russian tier 3 fighters were "flavor of the month" planes and stayed that for something like 24 months or so, hehe.
      It doesn't really matter all that much whether the flight models were unrealistic or not or whether their guns were overperforming. The meta game in RB was skewed so heavily in their favor that that alone fucked up the balancing.
      With that I mean Russians are good at mid to low altitudes and the game was set up so pretty much all the fighting happened at those altitudes. Also their "Jack Of All Trades" character was a huge advantage. They could outturn everybody who was faster than them (Americans and Germans) and outrun everybody who was more maneuverable than them (Japanese and some British fighters).
      Also I noticed back then (and I took the time to make notes and not just rely on subjective perception) that the weather tended to favor the Russians too.
      On those maps where Russians would meet Germans and Americans and usually be attacked from above, you pretty much always had clouds for the Russians to hide below and on those maps where Russians would meet the Japanese and the Russians would be the ones who do the attacking from above, the weather was almost always clear and without clouds.
      That is what I meant when I said that the nation vs nation gameplay was aggravating problems with the balancing.
      Single "flavor of the month" planes aren't really that much of a problem in RB, I'd say.

    I'm a very new player so I might be wrong, but would it have been a safer choice to simply return to base and rearm after you shot down that P-40 near the end? I'd imagine even if the A-20 had landed, your 190 could still climb faster than it and you would have had a better chance of shooting him down with cannon shells.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      Theoretically it could have been safer (though not as much fun), but there's no guarantees my 20mm would have damaged him. Also he could have flown at low altitude, where he'd be difficult to spot, strafing ground targets & getting ahead on the tickets. I've seen more than one RB game end that way.

    I really only have one criticism of your play style. I don't try to hit multiple targets in a BnZ run. I dive hit my target and climb immediately. I find you bleed too much energy trying to turn onto the next target. If I ever hit another target its if there's another plane right there. Otherwise I conserve energy and get back up to altitude. As far as the Bf 109s go. Try the F4 it's my current favorite. You really don't have to worry about convergence cause the cannon is in the nose. I roll with air belts. They tend to rip wings easily. But in general just be patient. The first people to die in RB are generally the first to dive. I try to account for as many planes as possible before I start attacking. I had too many time where I was zoom climbing and a P-51 I hadn't accounted for swoops in and gets me.

Also, as someone mentioned below the silver and xp is just not worth your time... Often you climb 10-15 minutes (looking at you, stock FW A-8) only to be shot down by vastly superior climbers. Don't think I need to mention that without premium you get less than a 100 XP on those occasions and you have nothing left but to feel cheated.

      Yep, every word you say is true. Its a pity about the maps, though I believe that would be one of the easier aspects of RB for Gaijin to improve. The gameplay though, can be extremely brutal if you're not flying one of the FOTM planes and/or you're just going through a bad run of luck - and yes from a rewards perspective you can gain absolutely nothing (and go backwards in SL) after a couple of hours of flying.

      Indeed, I'm still waiting on new maps to be added, yet unfortunately all I see is the ground forces improved, maps included. Hence the reason why I haven't touched WT for months now, which is a real shame, hate to see such a good game going to waste.
      Is Enduring Battle still just a work in progress or have they finally implement it in RB?
      The moment it's an official game mode I'm going back to WT.

      Enduring Conflict was available for a few weekends in a row for RB, not sure if its still happening, but I was unable to get a game in it as I can rarely play on weekends. Its not an official mode for RB yet, and I agree their progress with it has been positively glacial. I expect it'll get worse now they're introducing the hyped-up "river boat" mode.

      Oh well, that both both sounds interesting and disappointing, let's just hope eventually Gaijin will take care of their game and take it in the right direction again. :]

    I prefer stealth because you opponent can see what your firing and can avoid it.

    Try to never get dragged into the AAA of the enemy main base... there are enough videos out there how the last enemy camps there and let's AAA take out up to 7 players trying to attack him.
    Then again you can use this yourself if you are at a complete numerical disadvantage. Once it is two vs. five or so you're usually out of luck, esp. in the higher tier games.
    Best regards,
    Phil

    When you release the "C" View button. Does your screen goes automatically to your aim? How do I configure that on controls? Thanks!

    What's the reason of taking 45 min fuel? The more you weight, the worse you climb and flight

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 5 lety

      Well, it wasn't a plane I expected to win a battle of altitude in anyway, and sometimes taking more fuel can let you engage planes retreating to the airfield, or when they try to take off again. That was the idea anyway - just me being an RB n00b really.

    Try flying realistic with an entirely new plane (or one that you don't remember how it flys). You will not have any expectations of its performance in AB and taking it out in RB will be much easier (at least this helped me).

      Heh, you know me - I'd be more likely to spend half an hour in flight tests before daring a live battle ;) With the 190 I had a clear idea of what to expect handling-wise, I just need to watch my energy more closely before performing certain maneuvers.

      +long5hot The e-4 is a great plane, but the bf-110 is amazing! My current favorite plans to fly in RB is the p-47. This is a squad only plane to be consistently effective.
