On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 8-13-20.
We're looking at a 1958 DeSoto Firesweep Convertible in Red Paint. The car comes with the factory 350 CI V8 engine with 280 HP.
The car's Owner is Ken Nagel. Ken’s had this car since 2011. He shares this one has some rarely seen factory options. The car has a Benrus Self Winding Watch in the center of the steering wheel and a factory record player that plays 16 2/3 RPM records. This one looks “showroom” new.
If you're interested in seeing this car in Ken's collection, see this link.

As soon as I saw the thumbnail I thought "KEN"! He sure knows how to pick pretty classics. The '58 Desoto was always one of my favorites. Once again, the designers knocked it out of the ballpark. Big, but so clean a proportionately pleasing from every angle. I like how Mopars have that sloping trunk to further accentuate the height of the fins. This parked in front of a modern ranch house in the suburbs was American life at it's peak.

A beautiful '58. I've always wanted a '57 (same body) so I could pick on the Chevy guys about "Real fins!".
I've had 4 cars (3 Chryslers 1 Dodge) that shared the same chassis layout, and loved every one of them.
The only difference in the chassis layout would be that the Desoto is old enough to have a full separate frame, and all of mine had a primitive unibody setup. But the layout is pretty much the same.

That car is a reminder of the days long passed when automobiles were engineering feats as well as high art...we no longer have this today,
Todays cars are engineering for engineering's sake and none of it improves the ergonomics of the car it only unnecessarily over complicates it and facilitates the planned obsolescence of the car.

I'm not talking about Hot Rodding... That has always been about stripping them down for speed and simplicity.
I'm talking about new cars, too much failure prone tech, and planned obsolesce.

I agree with you 100%. Cars of the same class all look like each other; I call them cookie-cutter cars. Styling has been thrown out the window to increase profits for the manufacturers. Although safer and more mechanically sound, I’ll sacrifice those for these works of art any and every day!

Hi, Lou! Wow, a car with Hi-Fi styling AND a Highway Hi-Fi! DeSoto called it's 1958 models "the exciting look and feel of the future", although tailfins didn't have much of a future after that, and neither, for that matter, did DeSoto itself. Still, I would say the '57s and '58s were the most beautiful DeSotos ever.
The Highway Hi-Fi first became available in 1956 and was offered as late as 1961 (I think), and as far as I know, any Chrysler Corporation car could get one. It was developed by RCA Victor, and it used special records that played at 16 2/3 RPM and were designed in such a way as to remain in the groove should the car hit a bump or a pothole in the road. It didn't always work out that way! Still, it was a good early attempt to give passengers a chance to listen to whatever music they wanted to take along for the ride. It would have been interesting to find out if it still worked in Ken's car.
BTW, you may know that DeSoto was the prime sponsor of the TV show "You Bet Your Life" with Groucho Marx. It began advertising on the show in 1950, and 1958 was the last year. You can view a lot of the old episodes and commercials here on CZcams.
As for the rarity of 1958 DeSoto convertibles, the Firesweep, as Ken mentioned, saw 700 copies made. The Firedome ragtop had 519 built, the Fireflite 474, and the Adventurer a whopping 82! Also, I recently completed an article on DeSoto station wagons that was just printed in my column in my station wagon club's newsletter. DeSoto built station wagons from 1949 to 1959, and only about 22,000 over that timespan, with 1957 being the highest production model year at 5,239 units, so they are pretty rare, too. Seems a lot of people, even some who lived during their day, aren't even aware DeSoto made wagons. A few have also told me they didn't know it was a Chrysler product. They thought it was an independent like Nash or Studebaker.
Lou, I think you've really lived life to the fullest having ridden in so many rare and special automobiles as this! Another round of thanks goes to you and Ken for bringing us viewers along!

Although many state it was a 2x4 bbl 318 poly head engine..maybe some of the cars used were, but the under hood shots clearly show a 2x4 carbed 350ci big block :) Plus the red paint & big tailfins, lol. just minus the malevolent spirit within, thankfully! ahaha.

Beautiful car. Thanks for sharing this. My family owned a 58 Chrysler Windsor 2-dr hardtop from 1964-67, when I was an impressionable 9-12 yrs old. During that time I never heard of the Forward Look, and my recollection is that during the 60's, the cars with fins, only a few years old, were basically dinosaurs. They just looked so out of place while people danced the Watusi...the only bright side is that to me it kind of resembled the Batmobile, on TV at that time. The legendary build quality problems I've read about were manifest in our car. As I mentioned, the car was only 6 years old when we got it, relatively gently used by our neighbors, and I recall my father had to have the front seats recovered because they were ripping away from their frame. We had electrical problems, especially with the neutral starter switch, which was novel - it would have been cool to show the owner starting up the car (although I'm not sure this car had that - it probably did if it was top of the line). The fins on these cars got all scratched up - they were not only tall but pointed outward - I remember my mom nicking a parking regulations sign when she parallel parked. On this car's radio, did you notice the Civil Defense symbols on the station dial? Gotta love the Atomic Age... As for the record player, its speed was 16 2/3 RPM, half the speed of LPs. I don't think 16 2/3 recordings were too readily available at retail, hence the limited selection from Chrysler. I can't imagine anything more dangerous than flipping a record over at 65 MPH, plus the needle would jump every time you go over a bump unless maybe the record had specially deep grooves, so I'm guessing the player was intended more for parking on Lovers Lane or at the drive-in restaurant.

Thanks for the video Lou. It is an amazingly beautiful car. Watching your video reminded me of some features of these DeSoto's. The clock in the steering wheel. That Reminded me of a feature in Dads 57' the cigarette butt storage. That car had 2 suction ports below the dash with a lever you pushed. Put the butt there and pushed the lever and whoosh butt was sucked into a jar in the engine compartment. What a gimmick but smokers loved it. In many ways Chrysler was ahead of the others. Torsion bar suspension Hemi head engines, styling. Later ram induction engines with dual quad carbonation. We had that in the '60 DeSoto. It would use up a 26gal. tank before we got 250 miles on trips. When you stepped on the gas that car took off It had a record player too. Anyway Thanks for the trip down memory lane. -Joe

As I look at this beautiful DeSoto it sure looks like the 58 Chrysler we had we had a Saratoga and boy they sure do look like brothers and sisters. I love the color and I love the chrome and I love love those wire wheels! That car had to be a dream to ride in it just looks like a big red bird when you see it going down the road with those wings on the back. It's a shame they quit DeSoto it was quite an automobile that I guess it just looked too much like Chrysler and it was a demise sort of likes Studebaker was. Just just gorgeous this car is I just don't have any words for this Mr nagle look like a kid in a candy shop driving that! thanks for sharing Lou I really enjoyed this and I really enjoyed the record player even though I have seen them before in other automobiles that was a neat invention of Chrysler also that clock in the steering wheel something I never knew before that was just awesome! Once 1958 came around & all car makers went to the dual headlights what a difference it made to the characteristics of the front end.
Majority of 1958 cars look sinister & this Desoto is up there with the best of them.

I believe that the exhaust on those cars originally did vent out through the bumper ports, otherwise there would be no reason for the holes. 1956 Lincolns and mi-50s Buicks and others had that setup but the inherent moisture blowing out of the sectional chrome caused them to rust and rot badly so they all quit that idea

Why did some DeSotos come with the Dodge front end & some with the Chrysler front end? Tiger.

Because it was to build two different wheelbase cars, Chrysler did the same starting in model year 1958. Wheelbases 122 and 126 inches, this being 122. This continued in 1959 though the front end sheet metal loooed like their division. Chrysler only into 1960 and after years. Desotos in 1960 and 1961 were 122 in wheelbase. This Desoto in the video was built in Hamtramck alongside Dodges. That’s why so much interchanges with Dodges. Firesweeps sold a lot in 1958, not many long wheelbase ones built in that recession year. I disagree with the owner, the long wheel base Desoto convertibles from 1958 are much much rarer. There’s probably a total of 30 or so of these left, maybe a bit more. Find a Fireflite convertible, 474 built, about 5 or 6 are known the exist, 3 roadworthy in Sweden and 1 in the US but it’s not on the road and needs everything.

    • @TigerRogers0660

So the Firedome & Fireflight convertible both use the long wheelbase??

    • @peace.quiet.freedom6675

@@TigerRogers0660 yes, Firedome, Fireflite and Adventurer were all 126” wheelbase from 1957-1959. Firedome convertible production is 1958 was 519. I’d say about 15-20 are known. Of course there’s some private collections and perhaps a couple still stored in barns. The reason Desoto outsold Chrysler in 1957 was the Firesweep. Chrysler didn’t have a 122 wb car in 1957. These short wheelbase cars made a difference in sales. Look at 1960, about 350,000 Dodges were produced in the US, 88% were short wheelbase 118” Dart series cars. Furthermore that also made a dent to Plymouth sales.

This is kinda the perfect year for DeSoto. In the early '50s Chrysler products were still looking rather dated and unexciting. Then along came Virgil Exner and gave the entire lineup this new "forward look". 1958 was the first year of dual headlights, like you mentioned in the video, and the tailfins were extravagant but the look was still fresh and inspiring. But by the end of the decade they were layering on too many chrome bumpers, bumperettes, grilles and other doodads on the DeSoto and it lost its appeal. DeSoto was a higher-end model, above Dodge and Plymouth, but below Chrysler. They felt they needed the extra chrome bits to justify its higher price.

The highway Hifis are neat, but technically were not factory offered in model year 1958. You need to have a 7 button Searchtune radio for one to work. It uses a cable that wires into a port on the radio. In 1958, the Searchtune radios look like the 57s, but the port for the Hi-Fi was not there. Theoretically, one could get one installed at the dealership using a 1957 radio. Although by 1958 they weren’t being warranted by the manufacturer.
