On "My Car Story" we're at the Carlisle Events in Carlisle PA on 7-15-22.
We're looking at a 1959 Desoto Adventurer in White Paint. The car comes with the 383 CI V8 engine, dual quads, and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Bruce Frank. Bruce’s had this car since 2006. He shares he had another car, however it just was not getting put together after sending years gathering parts. This one was all put together, it was purchased, and here it is.
If you’re interested in learning about the different events at the Carlisle Events, go to the website at www.carlisleevents.com

What a majestic car, it exudes Chrysler DNA from every corner. And yeah, the engine is super smooth, and it's in mint condition.
Hi Fabio, Happy to read "What a majestic car, :-) Lou
What a year 59’ was and the “fin” wars! Rolling Art! This guy is one cool cat!
Happy to read you enjoy this "Rolling Art!" and the Caretaker too :-)
@@loucostabile He seemed a little shy, reserved somehow.
Indeed! Rolling Art. The designers surely thought themselves so.
Gotta luv the 50's MOPAR Forward look cars by Virgil Exner!! Awesome. Thanks for posting Lou! Have a blessed day!
Hi Gerry, Happy to read "Awesome" :-) You're welcome. Blessings received, and God bless you too, Lou
@@loucostabile The thing about these MOPARS from the 50s and 60s was that the build quality was poor. Plus like most cars of this era they rusted quickly. These beautiful cars are in MUCH better condition when restored. This Desoto is Awesome. I really like the colors on these 50's cars. Today's cars seem to be ..white, black, gray, silver & tan )-: with a few red and blue tossed in. Thanks again for posting Lou!
I bet that DeSoto had torsion bar front suspension. That DeSoto = Class! That gentleman was very fortunate to find this beautiful relic from the past. I loved that engine bay. Back then a person could actually service their own car such as adjusting the fuel mix on the carb's, changing out the spark plugs, setting the timing and dwell on the distributer and so on. Everything on those cars were analog controlled relay logic, as opposed to todays cars that are operated with a temperamental digital computer.

@@loucostabile I am subscribed. I always enjoy fetching a hot cup of coffee and sitting down at my computer desk, enjoying your video's. I am a retired electrician/stationary operating engineer, and your videos really appeal to my interests!
Front torsion bar suspension - Yes - on all ‘59 DeSotos as well as all Imperials Chryslers Dodges and Plymouths, with rear leaf springs.
The driver was the computer. Haha. 🙂. Another beautiful day
@@stuckinmygarage6220 I agree. Humans are more advanced than a computer chip.
Beautiful. My parents had a Pink 57 and Beige 58. Rust never sleeps in Chicago.
Hi Al, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Parents car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Sadly, the Chrysler cars, in particular, rusted out pretty quick, which is why you seldom see such examples as this one.
That 1959 Desoto looks like something that your buddy Randy Guyer would own. That Mopar is in phenominal shape, and the engine sounds smooth and healthy! I love these old Mopars that stand the test of time. With these cars, you don't see thwm everyday! Another great classic as usual Lou!
Hi Michael, Happy to read "I love these old Mopars" :-) You're right, you don't see these everyday. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Yes Michael, I have one in black!
@@johnnyduplantis Thanks Johnny, there are still more videos to come but Lou moves at his own pace. 😉
Remember the comic strip "Grin and Bear It"? Apparently, George Lichty was a big fan of
Virgil Exner's designs...virtually every car appearing in the strip, was a 1957-1959 DeSoto!
What a beautiful car...from an era when nearly every car had its own unique identity.
Hi Strange Daze, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Lou
There was a car dealership in the strip named Belchfire Motors.
No one did cars like Virgil
:-)
Brilliant designer of the “forward look.”👍
+1. Virgil Exner is the god of car design
Great looking car 👍 It's such a shame that Chrysler Corp. at one time included the Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto, Chrysler, Imperial, and Dodge Trucks brands, and now it barely casts a shadow. Thank you to the 'Lou Crew' for another educational, and entertaining, video!
Hi Mike YQR, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you. You're welcome, Lou
1959 Chrysler products are one of my favorites. Very nice, rare survivor car. I'm continually amazed at all the options available in the old days I never would have guessed a 383 dual quad engine was available. Thanks for showing the speedometer. Great video Lou and thanks!
Hi Gary, Happy to read this is a favorite of yours :-) You're welcome, Lou
Those "ribbon" speedometers were all the rage in the later 50s...my dad owned a 1959, red Buick LeSabre convertible...it also had the ribbon speedo, plus that silly warning buzzer, that you could set at a certain speed, to remind you if you were speeding!...1959 was pretty much the pinnacle for swooping, huge fins...by the early 60s, those had diminished considerably...Style was so important, at that time...safety?--not so much!
Spectacular car from bumper to bumper. I remember in the '70's, when the '57 Bel Air, '55 Ford Crown Vic, and all the other classic iconic models were the only '50's models people really valued. I would see these in books and didn't understand why there seemed to be no interest, or very little. I knew their day would come. Now they surpass the '57 Bel Air and '55 Crown Vic in value!
Hi Jospeh, High praise for this car :-) Lou
That's about how it was. A co-worker bought a 1960 Chrysler 2 dr HT in 1978 for $100. Not a single person even called about it except him. The engine was stuck but he got it unstuck mostly using Marvel Mystery Oil and got it started, changed the transmission fluids and filter, coolant (needed a radiator rod-out but not a core) and drove it as is for over a year. About the only thing you could hear was the tires on the road.
Beautiful Desoto! Wonderful condition and dramatic style.
Desoto is one of many lost but not forgotten US brands - thanks for bringing this to us Lou!
Hi Jeff, "Wonderful condition and dramatic style." Well said! You're right, a challenge to find one like this today. A real treat to be able to share this one with you. You're welcome, Lou
Mr. Frank's Desoto looks amazing! So much to see and enjoy in its styling. Dual quads & swivel seats, too. This one has it all. Thanks, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, "This one has it all." Agreed. You're welcome, Lou
Bruce's beard is just as impressive as his Desoto! Thanks Lou!
Nice :-) You're welcome Brian SD.

This one rips my head off, Lou. My favorite year for DeSoto. Wow, an Adventurer! Love the rear end - always a key factor. ;) No, this is when cars were such a thrill to own you took all your neighbors and friends for a ride. If I could go back in time...
Hi Dans Music, Happy to read this is a favorite year for DeSoto for you :-) Well if you can't go back in time......I think you're on the right CZcams Channel for you, Lou
@@loucostabile Thank you for replying and keep up the great work.
Hi Lou!! Another very nice Mopar!! I imagine these are very rare. Interesting that the fins & back end are identical to the '59 Chrysler - only difference was the tail light lenses. The same story for the '57 & '58 Desotos.
Hi Tiger, You're right, a rarely seen car today. Thank you for sharing what you notice, Lou
Very sensibly they put the fuel & temp gauges higher up than the '58 had them.
The 1959 DeSoto Adventurer is a classic car luxury work of art. Thanks for the video.

'59 Desoto tail fins are contenders for Best Fins Ever. Look at the triple red bullets on each side beneath the angled brow..... EPIC style.

Silver instrumentation combined with the chrome trim and turned-aluminum plating is absolutely gorgeous. Too bad, the bean-counters at Chrysler didn't continue that tradition

The best looking DeSoto ever. I've always wanted a 59, just like this one. You couldn't top MOPARS between 57-60, in spite of build quality at times

Hi Ramon, My pleasure sharing this car with you :-) You're welcome, Lou
DeSotos seemed to be classier than other cars in their range. Found a perfect one Lou
Hi FUBAR Model Yard, Happy to read "Found a perfect one" :-) Lou
I remember these cars when new... I was all of six. But they were fairly common at the time.
Hi David, What was common then is a rare treat to see now :-) Lou
Thanks, Lou, for another sentimental journey. Although this one is a sad (No, NOT a Saab 😉) story. In early 1960, parents had a chance to buy a 59 ADVENTURER exactly like this. I still have photos I took while they test drove it. Being just short of my driver's license, I desperately wanted that car to become part of the family. But they passed it up. But at least we still had our 55 Firedome. Then the local DeSoto dealer offered his last 61 DeSoto at a great deal. Once again they passed, only to trade the Firedome (six months later) for a 62 Plymouth Belvedere which to me was one of the ugliest cars ever built and a definite step down! It's Halloween 🎃, so I guess you could say I am still haunted 👻 by that American Horror Story.
You're welcome RICK 0e. Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Parents car choices :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
that Desoto is beautiful Lou with the swivel seats and the rearview mirror mounted to the dashboard. very classy 💯 I like the no post look also.
Hi Rich, Happy to read the details you enjoy about this car :-) Lou
Thank you for going back three times, Lou. 👍. Always 🙏
Hi StuckInMyGarage, Glad to have this one on the Channel to share with you :-) Lou
GREAT post. With your close up detail, I was really able to see one of these up close. At some angles I see a wee bit of Plymouth/Dodge/Chryslaer. No denying this was a cousin to those other makes. So many unique details here too. Great interior. What I wouldn't give to have my current Ford sound like this one!!! Chrysler did such a good job on the details here insde and out.. Great post as always. Definitely a thumbs up! Actually, I give all your posts a thumbs up as they are WONDERFUL!
Hi Brian, Thank you for giving all the post "thumbs up" :-) Glad to read the details you enjoy, Lou

Hi Czech Mate, Happy to read you enjoy the cars I find and share. Thank you, Lou
Super smooth and quiet. Love DeSoto! 👍
Happy to read "Love DeSoto!" :-)
Great to see Bruce and his fabulous ‘59 - the final year of the Adventurers’ standard issue inline Carter dual quads. Rams were optional for ‘60, and after a short production run of ‘61s with the 2-barrel 361 motor, the DeSoto marque was no more.
Hi Noel, Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
What was the HP rating on that engine?
Factory rated at 350 hp.
So much styling just beautiful. Thank you Lou for bring us such an amazing car.

A great DeSoto Lou, looks good under the hood too.
Hi Derek, Happy to read you enjoy this "great" car :-) Lou
What a classy DeSoto! And right before the marque petered out in '61. The white & gold is a sweet combo & dig all the chrome trim inside. Imagine plastic trim interiors last 50+ yrs? bah ha ha
Hi Pat, Happy to read you enjoy the details of this "Classy DeSoto" :-) Lou
Enjoyed your video of the ride with undercover Santa Claus...lol 😂 A very nice 59 DeSoto 👍
Hi Larry, Happy to read you enjoy the video :-) Lou
Thanks!
@lou - great car story sir - and an amazing engine - super clean - enjoy the day
Hi Peter, THANK YOU! Appreciate your support! Lou
Beautiful car! I always found it interesting that Mopar made so many name plates with a backward slant, whereas usually makers wanted that forward slant to represent sleek speed.
Hi LoveIsAll, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
@@loucostabile I've wondered so many times why DeSoto disappeared. I guess I think it's because the market segment disappeared within Mopar. The Dodge top-line models crept closer and of course then DeSoto had its Dodge-based lower line, then also the Windsor and DeSoto got closer on the upper end. What do you think, Lou? Obviously it had nothing to do with the physical car itself...
Very nice. Be careful Bruce. If a guy named Randy calls, you might not want to answer - if you want to keep your car.
He may make you "an offer you can't refuse."😅
Hi Johnny, Happy to read you enjoy this "Very nice" car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

There are other years that have gems, but the Twenties, Thirties, Fifties and the Sixties, (Lincoln Continental as an example.) had the best designs. It is a shame that the don't look that good anymore. Signed-Richard. I am only Fifty plus.

Hi Larry, Happy to read you enjoy this "amazing" car :-) Lou
That's a cool car! Thankyou! One of the few Desotos I've seen with a 3-speed automatic.
Happy to read you enjoy this "cool car!" :-)
Most all DeSotos, 1957 and newer, were fitted with Chrysler’s cast iron A-488 3-speed TorqueFlite trans. The 2-speed PowerFlite was available in only the Firesweeps that rolled off the Dodge assembly line. Firesweeps could also be ordered with TorqueFlites. And some DeSotos were ordered with 3-speed manuals.
Too bad DeSoto in the end got squeezed out between Dodge and Chrysler. The 58 recession had a huge impact hurting these mid-priced cars. Even though DeSoto was fading in sales, they still were offering some pretty great cars (this car being a fantastic example of that). Thanks to the owner and Lou.
Hi Allen, Thank you for sharing. You're welcome, Lou

What a treat boo 👻
:-)
They were more beautiful than the Chryslers. Only 590 of these were built and just 97 convertibles. The recession killed the make as sales plunged in 1958 and never recovered and it died in Dec, 1960 after about 3000 1961's were built. A number of these were used in the last season of Highway Patrol.
Thank you for viewing and sharing.
