I was born in 1954. My dad had a 53, 4-door sedan, Super model, so these Buick’s are “the car of my childhood”. So many wonderful memories. It really was a happy childhood. I miss mom and dad so very much.
    Thanks for the video

Hi, Lou! Well, as the fine car maker from Flint used to say back in the day, "When better cars are built, Buick will build them", and surely this one was built to be not only a "floater", but also a commanding presence on the road, ergo, Roadmaster! The details on this one are exquisite, especially that checkerboard dashboard! BTW, the 50th anniversary and first V-8 weren't the only milestones for Buick in 1953. The Roadmaster and Super series included the last genuine wood-bodied station wagons ever built in the industry.
Many thanks to you and Dennis for taking us all along on this sentimental journey!

Lou when I first saw this car when it was posted I knew who the owner was going to be. What a car looks like they just made it. He has such nice old Buick's and this one is surely no different. I loved the glow on his face when you were introducing the car and the glow when he was driving it really is fun to watch. My folks had a 1954 Buick when I was a little boy and it was nothing but trouble with the transmission and the body rust and it was pretty close to new when they bought it. I love the style the wire wheels the checkerboard dash that was really cool and the chrome on the car. That interior was just gorgeous. What a neat ride along Lou! I enjoyed this video a lot and thanks for sharing with us!

The first Nail Head V-8 And, Amazing one speed transmission: the Dynaflow...... Low was obtained with a manual shift on the column. BTW, the 188 was underrated. My Dad claimed it was closer to 220, maybe a bit more. If not mated up to the early Dynaflow, It would smoke the Chrysler's of the day..... But that could just be my Dad's brand loyalty.
You are a lucky guy to ride in that amazing Roadmaster. Thanks for bring it to us.

Chuck, I wonder how many Buicks of that era were sold with manual transmissions. I was born in 1954, and while my old man bought cheaper Chevys & Fords, his brother was a salesman and always drove Buicks. They were always automatics, and I recall most Buicks I saw as a kid had the iconic “Dynaflow” chrome insignia somewhere on the body or fenders.
I’d especially think that the high end ones like the Roadmaster and Super were predominantly automatics.

An absolute favorite! A rolling work of art all done up in black attire, red trim, and adorned with chrome jewelry. I will only get to imagine cruising down the parkway with the top down. I’ve noticed in cars through the early fifties there is still some hints of Art Deco throughout the interior especially the dash area indicative by the checkerboard pattern & steering wheel spokes. And yet, a movement into the upcoming ‘jet age’ by the hood ornament. What a beautiful presentation. Thanks Lou & Dennis!

We were kids together and we derided Jimmy when he told us his parents put aside in their garage a White 1953 Buick Roadmaster convertible for him to claim on his 18th birthday. Wow! You'll have a car that's 15 years old! Big Deal! Ha Ha! Last time I saw Jimmy he was an 18 year old paratrooper driving that car on his leave before Vietnam. Cresting a hill in Forest Park in Springfield, MA. top down on the red interior with a pretty girl at his side in that work of Art automobile that he saw but his dumb friends couldn't. Months later Jimmy died in Vietnam. We found his name on the wall. But the image of him ascending that hill with his girl at his side in that 53 Road Master always makes me feel real good for him. Thanks for a great video!

A bit of trivia for you Lou ... At 13:20, you referred to “the bullseye”. If you’ll notice that was a new-styled bullseye; it incorporates the “V” which signifies the new-for-‘53 V-8 engine. That V went on to be used in numerous Buick insignias ...

It's tough to find the right words for this one Lou! Just jaw-dropping beautiful. This is more than a vehicle. It's a sculpture, a work of art, by Harley Earl. The black paint and top contrasting all the chrome, including the Kesley-Hayes spoke rims is simply sensuous. I actually like the Roadmaster convertible over the Skylark. The Skylark is rare and impressive, but a little "cartoonish" in comparison.

After Cadillac and Olds came in with their ohv V8s in 1949, Buick finally enters the fray with their very reliable and durable Nailhead!!!!! Yay! But Buick pioneered the ohv design in their straight 8s. What a BEAUTTIFUL car. In 1953 the Special held on to the straight 8 for one more year.
1949 Buick also brought us the "hardtop convertible" which was the pillarless, frameless 2 door hardtop body style. In 1955 they brought us the 4 door hardtop or "hardtop sedan". Chevy lagged by one year bringing it in for 1956.

Hi Lou. I just discovered your channel a couple weeks ago and I really enjoy it. Your photography and narration are great - you don’t talk too much (unlike so many CZcamsrs) and you allow the video to “breathe” and flow nicely. Keep up the great work, Lou!
PS, I live in Texas now, but used to live in Naperville and still have a sister-in-law in Algonquin, so I recognize that Chicago suburban scenery.

Power windows, power seat and power top on a 53 simply remarkable...so early for tho!!se accessories which wouldnt become commonplace for decades to come..The gentlemen said the top was hydraulic, I imagine the windows and seats used that system as well...and the repairs and oil leakage could be tough to deal with, but nevertheless the purchaser went first class all the way here!..Nice job Lou as always....

I can visualize you having to wash that car very thoroughly and quite often to get all the road salt out of the fender wells and underneath it until you got another car to take its place! Here in Arizona, they just get hot and dry out. Pretty hard on the interior and paint job. Inside a closed garage, not so much. I think our biggest concern is broken windshields. There seems to be an abundance of rocks that sound like bullets when they hit. With a late model car one has to have glass replacement on their insurance.

The Skylark wire wheels were an option and cost an extra $400 according to a 1954 price list I saw. That included five wheels, so these must have been added maybe during the restoration. Buyers coud get the wire wheels, an imitation wire wheel cover, or the standard wheel cover, with a V in the middle on Suepr and Roadmaster and Buick crest on the Special, which was still a straight 8 and 6 volts. Then there was the small hub cap on bare bones Specials. It's interesting in 1953 the "Buick Eight" theme was still on the trunk lid, but with a "V" in the middle for models so equipped.

I worked for a dealer in the 70’s that talked about how many ‘53’s he was able to buy when they were current model year or a year old because of the “teething” problems Buick had with their first V8. People were trading them for other makes because of the noise that they made when first started. Apparently they sounded like they were going to blow up.

It is interesting to see the "break-in period" in the manual. I've never seen that in a manual before, although a friend had a 1965 Mustang, which he was only supposed to drive 50 mph or less until a specified amount of miles.

    • @loucostabile
