It’s a song about when a loved one takes their life what is a brother without a sibling? a father without a son? A husband without a wife? Can they be themselves as theyre haunted in mourning for the dearly departed? when a piece of you dies you forget how to be you.

The last line Ren is Singing directly to his friend Joe and you can see Tears rolling down his Face
Ren got a call in the middle of the night that Joe was on a bridge and called someone to say goodbye. Ren kept calling Joe's phone while he ran to the bridge to try to stop him. About 2-3 minutes before Ren got there, Joe's phone went out of service. Ren blames himself for not saving him.
Ren has said that Chinchilla is his musical sibling as they have that magical chemistry when they perform together.
In a sense you're right - it is a song about love - but it's about Ren's friend Joe who committed suicide and the impact the loss of his life has had on Ren. Listen again...
More specifically, his stay in the psych ward and the interaction between his loss of Joe and his psychotic hallucinations.
Let’s go back to Chinchilla at 5:04…the power, passion and restraint displayed in a subtle head shake. It’s beautiful.

A poignant song about grief. It’s stunning
Hearing this for the first time is magical, and that pause you needed is exactly how it hit so many of us our first time too. The depth of love and devastation of losing it, the grief of losing yourself and not loving yourself enough to keep going. There are so many facets to this song. As you said, his connection is visceral.

One of Ren's many talents is that he knows EXACTLY who to collaborate with, from Chinchilla to Eden Nash to Bibi to Sam Tompkins, to Romain, Gorran and Glenn of The Big Push, to Sam Perry-Falvey (videographer) to Venbee to Angry Car Park Attendant (and a whole bunch of artists I'm sure I missed). So often these days, record companies throw together a bunch of "big names" for the sole purpose of making $, but Ren does it for the love of music and the love of his audience. Once again your reaction hit it out of the park!
I've literally said that this duet has taken the top spot for me,and it has always been Islands in the stream before this. To knock off Dolly and Kenny is huge for me.
I always loved her song "Rockin' Chairs" with George Strait, too. Granted, it's not 'Islands', but it is quite lovely.🌈ᥫ᭡
I’ve seen Ren do this on an IG short and he had to cut away before finishing the last part. I agree that their connection is palpable and I think it’s not just their artistry but the level of trust they have with each other- it’s no wonder that he calls Chinchilla his musical sibling. They have that blood harmony and I think their voices weave together perfectly.
A love song? A love for one's life that ended too soon? A tribute? How mental health can push you off the edge? The love that is left behind? A beautiful song, sung beautifully ❤
Sometimes when you lose love you forget how to be you too. It’s just a different kind of loss.
You're reaction, you're musical and emotional breakdown is spot on. It's not a traditional love song though. This is one of a couple of songs that Ren wrote in memoriam of his good friend Joe who ended his life early. It's about the depression and despair Ren had to deal with in the aftermath and/or the despair that Joe must have felt at the end. In a way it is a love song because from love comes loss.

I reccomend you to next check Chinchilla's live performance "Fingers", her voice and perfomarce in that song is just amazing

Ren has a song called PRECIOUS that has gotten lost among everything else. Its an incredibly well written beautiful song. PLEASE check it out. Its PRECOUS - REN (the big push) live in Brighton. THANKS
Ren and Chinchilla are connected on a deeper level.
Ren loves Jeff Buckley and has mentioned he incorporates that soft vibrato at the end of phrases. I do see the Dwight Yokam reference.
A love song to his boyhood friend no longer here, by his references at the end. But it can be interpreted as love for anyone that you loose.

Wonderful reaction as always. I won't repeat what others have said about what Ren sang about in this song; however i will direct you to his songs Suic!de and For Joe in that order. Both intensely emotional but stunning songs. Suic!de about both perspectives of the act and For Joe is a memorial dedication to his childhood friend who he lost at 19 and has truly affected him so much as he says in this song.
Chinchilla is an amazing singer who should really be a lot more famous than she actually is. If you want to see something solo of hers I recommend Fingers Live version from Hunger TV (shows off her vocals), Little Girl Gone (up beat and quite commercial) and Cut You off (her just released single).
For some more upbeat music from Ren, try Losing It (Fischer Retake), Down on the Beat or Power. One of my current favourites of his right now is Seven Sins (no video but from his recent album).

My fav ren song by far. To me its reflective of rens suffering from the loss of his friend, and chinchilla portraying an extremely empathetic friend who is right there with him
An interesting interpretation ! The performance, the way they blend and intertwine their vocals, could definitely be seen as a shared love. Perhaps more for the music & the song than each other. The lyrics are more to do with Ren's mental anguish and how, because of it, he lost his identity. The final part of the song is explicitly about his friend Joe Hughes who took his own life 13 years ago. There is potentially an unspoken connection between the bulk of the song and the ending i.e. was his mental anguish actually caused by Joe's death, or independent from it ? The song is largely about grief, Ren has spoken about it but the death of one of his best friends had a massive impact on him (understandably) and created this part of him that forgot how to be himself.
Freckled Angles, a much older song, is a tribute to that friend. Su!cide, of the new Sick Boy album, goes into much more detail about that friend and his death (brace for impact on that one, it's hard) and he also did a beautiful live version which is a sort of medley/mashup called "For Joe".
Can highly reccomend checking out all 3 of them to be honest.
Su!cide is a two-part song. The first part speaks of Ren’s own mental struggle. The second part is about his feelings about Joe’s su!cide
Such a moving and wonderful tribute to Joe. They do the most amazing Live street performance ( busking in Brighton UK ) of " One Dance/Drunk in Love " just brilliant. Lovely reaction again.

I've had the thought that Ren should try doing some country songs. I would love to hear him do a cover of "Desperado" as I originally heard it as a country song when Clint Black sang it.

I think there must be something about Welsh Voices that can add an extra something when singing.
I'm not sure if you've done any solo Chinchilla, but you need to get on that soon. "Little Girl Gone" the official video is a great intro to her style.

I think everyone has periods in their life when they lose their identity; maybe going to university in a far off town, or giving up a high powered job to be a stay at home mum, or moving town, or losing a job. But I think Ren is singing about this times 10: actual clinical derealisation. A severe mental health symptom. I am guessing it is about the full mental breakdown he had (poor sod) and his mum took him back to Wales. "...over we go, the hills and the valleys below".
I’ve listened to this song many, many times and hadn’t heard anyone connect it to derealization. Now I’ll hear it in a new light. I get it. Have suffered greatly with this in my past. Crippling. The lyrics will hit on a new deeper level with me. Thanks for your insight.

Btw, "love song"? It IS about Ren's love, anguish and grief for his best friend, who committed suicide, minutes before Ren got there, so it does involve love but calling it a "love song" might be a bit of a push... :)
@@AllRandomOutcomes - Both songs were written by Ren. They may have made some minor changes to make them work better as duets but they're essentially Ren compositions. This one in particular is very personal to Ren, as it describes how the suicide of his best friend affected him.
