This is another great tribute by Ren for his childhood friend Joe Hughes who gave up the fight on the Menai Bridge late at night at age 19. Joe had been suffering from depression and I believe this is written as a take on Joe's perspective leading to that fateful night. Another genuine reaction to a beautiful haunting song delivered by Ren & Chinchilla. Congrats on bringing a precious life into the world. Cherish that gift. Kia kaha from NZ

My interpretation: As a soldier who has lost quite a few brothers and sisters to suicide this song perfectly hits the feelings of those of us left behind. The survivor's guilt and sadness you feel after losing people in this way, you forget how to be yourself. When you feel happy you feel guilty for being happy, when you think about them you feel loss, sadness, and guilt for not knowing they needed you and not being there. You constantly think about what signs did you miss, why didn't you call or see them in the last few days, why are you okay when they are gone, why did you make it back from war to lose them this way.
Damn when you said it can be harder to find yourself after you loose the person you looked up to, that hit me hard. Bloody got my eyes leaking 😭 Too accurate 😔

What this song means to me is that the bruises on the wall and the bodies in the floor are past mistakes and how hard it is to escape and forgive yourself.
I always thought of it as a metaphor for his mental state. The bruises on the wall and bodies in the floor. Like your current pains and your old regrets buried deep.
To understand better you need to see the song, FOR JOE, by Ren. Ren said, when he writes it is for you to interpret what it means for you.
DJ Ren to me is suffering from survivor's guilt from losing his best friend Joe on top of having Lyme's Disease and being misdiagnosed for years which brought on Depression and Phsycotic episodes and he's not remembering who he was before all this happened to him. I would say that your interpretation is just as valid as anyone else’s, even Ren’s. He himself has said that once a work is out in the world it takes on a life of its own. It is the listener or observer who brings the meaning they need for themselves at the time. Great reaction and I love the merch idea!

You need to check our Ren's Love Music, parts 1-4. They are more happy and positive, about the joy of music. And OK, I'll warn you, the rapping gets kind of crazy, especially in part 4 :)
"I don't feel safe in my bed voices in my head talking to the dead. Fear and Sin follow me. Over the Valleys and hills below... Back home. It suffocates me...Wish I could get out of this tomb (Joe's own mind)". Ren wrote this from Joe's perspective. At the end Ren breaks the 4th wall to tell the story and talks to Joe directly, " When he gave up the fight; decision late in the night. Stuck with me all of my life. I miss you so..."

Glad you get to see a different side to Ren, most people don't focus on it or don't care. What I think is amazing, and I really think some people are going to hate, is that Ren said he doesn't consider himself a Rapper or even a Rap Artist, but a songwriter period. He said his next album after Sick Boi is almost done and it's going to be almost a complete opposite. He said the next album will be mostly singing, very little rapping, and all the instruments will be him performing them since he plays like 6 different instruments. No beat production, no auto-tune, etc. He said the entire album is going to sound like this song and Chalk Outlines and he wants to make a "timeless" songwriter album. He said he wants someone new to pick up the album, play it, and not be able to determine what decade it's from. I think his versatility is what makes him so unique.

This is one of my fav ren songs for feels and just pure excellence, another one of my fav is his single freckled angels written for joe. The more you learn about joe the more some of the songs will hit you
I believe this was performed on the Menai Bridge which connects Anglesea to the mainland of Wales and is the bridge REN’s friend Joe took his life from and is the person Ren refers to at the end of the song. I don’t know how he could keep it together but it explains the intensity of the emotions. Amazing performance. ❤

When I lost my toddler to a violent death, I felt for over a year that I wasn't actually myself. I felt like an imposter pretending. Damn near lost my mind.
This one pulls hard at the heartstrings for me. It highlights her voice in a way Chalk Outlines only hints at. You are SPOT on with this one. Losing his closest friend hit Ren hard, being unable to move on for years. Ren got the call Joe was on the bridge, arriving literal minutes too late. The survivor's guilt had to be devastating. Freckled Angels and For Joe are also about this part of his life. WARNING: For Joe will probably make you cry, it does for me.
Now, if you want more of Ren/Chinchilla, I'll highly recommend their street performance of One Dance/Drunk In Love. The only warning there is it is a much more powerful performance than you may be expecting for two people on a city street.
Just an excellent reaction! There are a lot of assumptions out there about the meaning of this song. I don't think that Ren has ever gone over that. When asked if he ever wrote a song about Joe specifically, the only song he mentioned was Freckled Angels. I have my own feelings about it and i don't believe he has or would be able to know what was in Joe's mind. Who could know that? The way it resonates with me is that it is about what happened in his own mind after Joe died. Grief and guilt. Loss of so much. Shouting out "why?" To the heavens and so on. But that is just me! Anyway it is a wonderful song, performed brilliantly.

For me, he starts out talking about losing someone that meant everything to him. He lost the Midas touch (where everything you touch turns to gold). And then everything around him or in his house reminded him of what was missing or who was missing. Then he forgot “how to be me” because he spent so much time with them he no longer knew who he was because he felt like he was nothing without them. The last part was obviously about his friend Joe self deleting.
Very touching song. I just had a friend who gave up the fight and OD’d. This song and For Joe were songs I listened to on repeat until the Money Game game came out and took me away for a bit. That was intense.

Ren had psychosis, often people can see dark shadows on the walls I think that is the bruises on the walls. Anyone who has had psychosis will tell you that is terrifying as you can actually see and hear deceased spirits.

These two have 3 official collabs together. This, Chalk Outlines, and the more fun Round Town from her Moon Maintenance album. It doesn't have an actual video, but is a fun song. Then there are a couple of busking videos, and he has hinted that he wants to have her back on his next album.
