My suggestion for the back of the cabinet is to put faux cabinet doors on it. That generally looks better than just a plain panel. Or you COULD put ACTUAL doors on it if accessing it from both sides might be handy. Are you going to put an overhang on the countertop on the backside? It might make a nice place for a breakfast bar if you have room for it. My in-laws and grandparents BOTH did that and it was quite handy.

The floor is the eye catcher and doesn't need competition. You will come up with something beautiful, I'm sure. I really admire your craftsmanship and eye for design.
I once lived in a 180 square foot studio/closet in San Diego when I was stationed there. I paid $1,800 month plus I had to pay for parking. Mike, you continue to amaze me.

My vote is corrugated metal for the back side of the cabinets. Maybe even some used metal roofing that has started to rust. Then give it a nice matte clear finish. 😍 Keep up the good work. As always love all your work.

The little apartment gives you a lot of flexibility, if times get tough and you need more income you can move into the smaller one and rent out the bigger one for more money, if it happens to be vacant and you have guests coming to town they can stay there, and anyone renting where their landlord (you) lives/works will be more apt to behave and be a good tenant.

A couple ideas for the back of the kitchen cabinet. 1. A single large framed panel similar in style to the cabinets at the cabin kitchen. I really like the wood you used as the cabinet center panels. 2. Make 3 fixed cabinet doors to match the front side of the cabinets or 3. Make it a feature/ statement piece by building a backlit “River” panel. Make a single framed panel with live edge board facing the inside and colored epoxy in the center between the live edge pieces. Backlit or not it would look great in that space.
I have similar memories of grade school, distinctly remember sitting near the window in 4th grade staring out at the adjacent field wondering why I was stuck inside on such a nice day. Incredible and wise vision you and Sarah have to do what you enjoy, great job making it happen and in such an awesome space. I could live in that comfy unit but would have to have access to the shop! What a perfect layout for a studio, love the bricks and the floor. You are so talented, the place looks amazing already and it’s not even finished! I was surprised to see an Empava oven, that’s what we chose for our house in Groveland, mainly for the size. The order of operations is different from other ovens but once we laminated a cheat sheet ( it’s a family cabin), all was well, it works flawlessly with no hotspots too. Thanks for the eye candy, loved it!!!

Looking good brother! You've come far from your early days candle stik soldering pipes 😊! A suggestion for the front of that kitchen sink cabinet, they make half thick bricks that look similar to that exposed brick where your cooktop is going, they're kinda like tile bricks but actual brick material, you could use baka board on the front and then thin set those brick tile to break up all that wood and it kinda matches that exposed brick behind.
Hey, Mike. Really enjoying the micro apartment build! Love the exposed chimney and, especially, the exposed brick above the windows and how you dry walled around it. You asked for suggestions on the kitchen peninsula back panel, so here's my two cents: I'd make it as simple as possible because the floor already has a lot of nice grain features and a 'busy' design would be too much. Not sure what your counters will be made of, and I know the fronts will be stained or clear coated. If the counter is to be wood, I'd paint the back black or slate gray (or something else neutral to make the wood features pop). As much as I love your cabin, this is not a cabin and I think a little industrial design would be a plus (which you've already applied, expertly, in other areas!). Well, that's my two cents...er...maybe eight cents. P.S. Awesome plans on moving in there and still having two rental units and a business! P.P.S. Sorry about 7th thru 12th grade. Hopefully you had a Shop class to mitigate the boredom.

Pretty sure Lowes still sells it. It's a Luan sheet with stripes in the grain... it's some kinda jungle wood. It looks AMAZING with an epoxy coat on it, the stripes pop out big time
I went to the kitchen appl store link. The oven you picked is exactly what I have been looking for to remodel our kitchen, great price. Will be placed on top of counter with room on sides. Liked the customer service comments, really important in my opinion… The 2 burner radiant cooktop is perfect. Place 2 units with space between for food prep items will work perfect. Beautiful job... as for the paneling on the back of that island (peninsula?), if it were me I would hinge the whole thing and try to make a hidden secret little storage area for like wine or, you know, the "good stuff". But it's not like YOU are going to live in this little studio... so you won't need any additional functionality. I've done stuff like this and used tile board that I'd slide down into trim channels... mine looked and felt like ceramic tiles... you might want to use something to match the brick or something. Either way, it was easy to take apart if I needed better access to the plumbing under the sink. Also made putting my drawer slides in just a bit easier being able to work from both sides.

Use some of that leftover floor to finish back of the drawers. I used pallet wood and planed it down then sealed it up…
We think alike because I used leftover flooring for the drawers
