    In this crazy experiment we push the limits of lens speed by modding a camera to fit a massive Zeiss Biotar f0.73 lens. Along the way, we are going to take you to the dark side of the moon the realm of the legendary Zeiss Planar f0.7 lens and explain how it helped Staley Kubrick to shot Barry Lyndon in candlelight. We are going to go to the basics to explore the possibilities and to expose the limitations of ultrafast lenses. We look into the possibilities that you have to shoot ultrafast yourself, and what budget options there are. Here we test the Kipon Ibelux 40mm f0.85, the SLR Magic 25mm T0.95… and we boost a Vintage Canon FD f1.2 below f1. We compare shooting ultrafast lenses with shooting at high ISO and of course… using both in combination. Special thanks to Lyndon Gaul and the Marmalade for partnering with us.

    You can use this formula to calculate the required flange:
    Maximum focus distance = FL x (FL - BF + CF)/(CF - BF)
    FL = focal length of lens
    BF = back focal distance of lens (from rear of lens mount to image plane)
    CF = camera flange distance (look up for your particular camera)

      I think it's also a matter of target audience...most people looking at videography know-how videos seem to be beginners who want to go to THE standard channels for the usual shit content like which sensor size is better, most important gear to have, which gimbal do I buy, etc. Media division is more about crazy fun experiments done by a professional, unlike some of the most popular videography channels.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před rokem +1

      It is more important to be seen by the right people. Filmmakers that deserve that name. Just like our content we go for quality over quantity. We do have some sucess with that. Higher end manufacturers come to us before they go to a million subs channels.

      @@MediaDivision that makes perfect sense. It would be actually impossible to deliver this kind of specialized and polished content daily (not even weekly) and if it helps to catch the attention of your target clients then having 80k or 8m isn't a big deal. I rarely comment on CZcams, but you guys totally deserve attention for the overall quality displayed in this video. Thank you, really! Just one thing is not so clear to me - probably I should rewatch some specific parts of the video: how did Kubrick manage to obtain such a deep Depth of Field in the candle sequence, filming at f0.7? Did he actually stopped down the lens? It is clear to my eyes that your result at f0.7 has a much shallower DoF. Sorry in advance for the probable dumb question, and thanks again for this production of yours. I am gonna share it with all my friends and colleagues. Amazing!!

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks a lot Riccardo...totally our pleasure. No, he shot at f0.7... it was the whole point and otherwise it would have been impossible using 100iso film stock. The DoF is indeed very narrow. The trick is to compose the scene in a way, to keep all important things on the same focal plane. The difference to out "The Mission" film is, that we used a 100mm lens (instead of a 50mm) and we had a full frame sensor instead of s35 film... resulting in a much deeper DoF.One thing besides the speed is, that the Biotar that we used has a slightly bend focal plane... it works like a light tilt shift on top of the narrow FoV. That was not a dumb question and we always appreciate viewers that really dig in deep!

    I'm vice president of drone valley, a consortium among researcher, industry, and administration.. in 2016 we have explored the potential to use primary drones in filmmaking industry, we think that this is going to be a game changer, unless we solve the problem of lens.....

    • @joseyang5098
      @joseyang5098 Před 2 lety

      @@MediaDivision : nowadays there are already many drone film festivals across the globe, and drone has already been using widely in film-making to this day.. however, the current challenge for drone filming is to be used at night or low visibility shooting..
      the weight it's a problem for drone actually.. there are also some industrial drones that have payload above 50 kg.. (50kg used to be the limit).. and there are already many multi-axis stabilizer which can make the drone moving really super smoothly and steady..
      the only problem is really the lens.. though there are already the multi-spectrum camera that can capture light beyond visible light spectrum, however it requires AI to recolor it in the post-processing, which takes really a lot of time and effort.. and most filmmakers still prefer to see with the feeling of "natural light"..
      another effect that ultra fast lenses can do but multi-spectrum camera can't replace is that supper thin foreground.. which can put the main object into the subject and eliminate the background all "naturally".. no other solution than ultra fast lenses will be able to deliver such effect "naturally"..

      Wow… I thought I was a nerd… you live it. What is that accent? You assume rightly, that the "rear element" is an integral part of these lenses… it works like a focal reducer. If you remove it, the flange extends, but the lens gets slower accordingly and you only have a fast lens after that… blah blah blah ;-)
      Looking at your sample pictures you can tell that your lens suffers from the same problem my Zeiss (and all other Xray lenses) suffers… a curved focal plane. As far as I am informed, the Xray cameras had a vacuum driven negative holder that would give the curvature. This allows for much simpler and cheaper optical designs. My R-Biotar is designed for 6x7 negative, meaning that the FF crop has less distortions compared to your images

I was really pleased that I got the 0.75 to work with the custom clamp, but obviously in practice due to that curvature it wasn't the most err, practical. For... anything haha. The bokeh was nuts though. I'm all for wild and out of control bokeh rather than nice smooth bokeh.
      I'd love to see an x-ray camera sometime - I guess they'd just be huge machines though, with a space for the lenses to fit. That R-Biotar is beautiful!

      Thanks a lot Brakmaster… I am sitting here and staring with tears in my eyes on the phone… but Netflix will not call. Can you tell them that they need to call Nikolas? 😅 I would love to produce a Netflix show, but to be honest… I have no idea where to start.

      @@MediaDivision Start sending emails. And dont stop with Netflix. All these new streaming services are hungry now for content. The only problem I see is that your content might be very niche. But the format, the delivery, the quality and length are definitely there. We are living in very difficult times and to be honest I don't know how bad it's still going to get. In fact I have closed my business due to this situation and don't know if I recover. Thankfully there are channels like yours that keep me company and occupied. I know how difficult it is to keep doing what you are doing if the financials don't add up but youtube cannot be a source of income for you at the moment. Keep hustling doing what you do and it will come organically. I am certain that there are many people which you can help with your skill sets for the appropriate fee. Sorry for the long message but I deeply resonate with what you are going through. All the best - Chris.

      We are all in the same boat... I don't know if we survive... and it doesn't seem likely. In that case, our YGT engagement comes to end too. We never made any significant money here, and the Netflix thing was more or less a joke. The whole industry is de facto on lockdown and there are 100 producers on every opening.

      @@MediaDivision Thanks! It looks like I've accidentally stumbled upon a fascinating channel with content that will keep me up for days. I wonder if you could do a video about the Hasselblad Zeiss lenses and the Metabones Speedbooster adapting these V-Mount lenses to the Fujifilm GFX100 series - I really want to shoot on that setup one day, as it is the motion picture equivalent of the 70mm pictures the Apollo astronauts took on the Moon, with a sensor that has a surface area larger than that of an Alexa 65.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 3 lety

      Glad you found us… and thank you so much for support us by being a Lynch member. Appreciated… you will make the future episodes possible. Well, we already have a video about medium format lenses for filming with the Mamiya 645 and the Kipon focal reducer. While the image Circle of the 645 is slightly smaller and the booster goes down to FF, the principles remain the same.
      It is here: czcams.com/video/ntohzgTm5Lo/video.html
      The Hasselblad V system is a 6x6 medium format (slightly smaller than IMAX but yes, bigger that 65mm 5-perf), but of course… you will cropping away a lot of the image to get to something like 16:9 or another suitable aspect for film.
      I don't quite know what you expect from that system.
      I don't want to pop a bubble, but a larger format does not have an intrinsically different look than a smaller one. Your boosted system using a 80mm @f2.8 will generate the same image that you will get using a 44mm @f1.5. The GFX has a very high resolution, but that is not intrinsic to the large format and I have smaller format cameras that have more resolution than larger format ones. In times of Apollo, it was just the best way to achieve high resolution images allowing higher magnifications.
      If you want to see how a camera with a large format sensor twice the size of IMAX and a whooping 200 Megapixel would look… we emulate one right here:

    Amazing content! All around epic. I've got to go in defense of the Canon 55mm f1.2 though. The FD-EF adapter with the lens element is dog shit, every single one I personally tested at least. Canon has produced one that the glass is actually good but its no easy to find and its quite expensive. So, all of the "ghosting" effect and the lack of sharpness is mostly due that. A converted one, a no-glass adapter OR one with the proper Speedbooster (FD-NEX? FD-M43?) would perform considerably better.
    Keep up the good work!
