House of the Dragon is the Game of Throne's successor show based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a history of House Targaryen set 300 years before the events in GoT. The showrunners of House of the Dragon are Ryan Condal along with battle-tested GoT veteran Miguel Sapochnik.
Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series tells the story of a turbulent period for House Targaryen, one that set sibling against sibling and dragon against dragon. The point of contention: who should rule on the Iron Throne, of course.
“If you’d like to know a bit more of what the show will be about… well, I can’t actually spill those beans,” Martin teased in his blog, “but you might want to pick up a copy of two anthologies I did with Gardner Dozois, Dangerous Women, and Rogues and then move on to ArchmaesterGyldayn’s history, Fire & Blood.”
Dangerous Women includes what press materials describe as a “35,000-word novella” by Martin called “The Princess and the Queen, or, the Blacks and the Greens,” which is “about the Dance of the Dragons, the vast civil war that tore Westeros apart nearly two centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones.”
Rogues, meanwhile, includes Martin’s story “The Rogue Prince, or, a King’s Brother,” which chronicles “the early life, adventures, misdeeds, and marriages of Prince Daemon Targaryen,” considered “one of the biggest rogues in the entire history of Ice and Fire.”
Finally, the novel Fire & Blood, released in November 2018, is the first novel of a two-part history of the Targaryens in Westeros.
“Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen - the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria - took up residence on Dragonstone,” according to the book’s description on the author’s site. “Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.”
House of the Dragon will be about Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war.
About George R.R. Martin’s involvement, we know only what he stated himself. George R.R. Martin stated: "I expect to be involved in [House of the Dragons] to some extent...and, who knows, if things work out, I may even be able to script a few episodes, as I did for the first four seasons of GAME OF THRONES. But... let me make this perfectly clear... I am not taking on any scripts until I have finished and delivered WINDS OF WINTER. Winter is still coming, and WINDS remains my priority, as much as I'd love to write an episode of HOUSE."

Actually, a lot of the concepts, battles, family beefs, etc come from REAL history. He just gave them different names and placed them in Westeros, Braavos, etc.
GoT is based on the war of the roses.
I would say Valyria as a concept sounds like Atlantis. No one creates something from nothing. There’s always a source that inspires.

More like hundreds. There were about 40 families of dragonlords in Valyria, and the Targaryens, a minor house, had 5. So let's say the average family had 10 dragons, that would be a total of about 400. Still impressive!

3:26 Dragonstone is truly impressive. The castle towers were shaped by Valyrian magic to look like dragons and they placed a thousand gargoyles upon it's walls. It was designed to be fearsome. That's why Daemon Targaryen was so confident he could make his forces look stronger they were if he placed them along the castle walls.
These real actors give so much volume to the stories. I love how all the casts are very much in his character when they narrate. So underrated!!!

The White Walker dream was Aegon's dream. As far as the Targaryen's being behind it, they wouldn't really benefit from the Doom until 100 years later when Aegon decided to conqueror Westeros.

All confirmed info about House of the Dragon season 2:
Episode 1 opens with Winterfell, we finally see the Starks.
Episode 1 is named “Son for a Son” and will feature the infamous Blood And Cheese event in which Daemon gets justice for Rhaenyra and Lucerys by killing one of Aegon’s sons, a son for a son.
In episode 2 we will see Cragyll brothers fight when one of them tries to infiltrate Dragonstone pretending to be his twin brother.
House of the Dragon season 2 episode 4 will feature the "Battle at Rooks Rest" episode will be titled “A Dance of Dragons" Directed by Alan Taylor. Rip the Red Queen and the Queen Who Never Was 🔥🐉

If Valyrian colonists were settling down the Rhoyne, how come only the Targaryens and their dragons survived? There were dragon lords in other parts of the Great Valyrian Empire apart from the peninsula which blew up. There must be atleast 20-30 families which survived.
They assimilated to their native cultures around them
i’m not sure if there’s other dragonlord families elsewhere. as far as we know the targaryens were the only dragonlords outside of valyria since they fled with three dragons and dragons eggs.
we know there are mixed and regular valyrian families in lys and volantis specifically the “old blood” who are completely pureblooded but they’re not dragonlords. they’re descended from soldiers who settled down.
I remember reading somewhere that there were a dozen or so dragons/dragon lords who survived because they were basically “out of town” in Lys etc. The people there saw their chance and killed all of the dragons when they could-except for the Targs.

I'm still being haunted by season 8. My interest in got just died.
Then you're missing out. Dan & Dave are NOT associated with HOTD AT ALL and GRRM is much MORE involved than he was with GOT. I also think HBO learned a harsh lesson with the backlash we gave them about GOT season 8.
Believe me, I didn't have much faith in this show until I saw the first trailer. Then I started getting excited for it. I LOVE it!
It left a bad taste in all of our mouths to this day, to be sure. Like, fuck man, I've had multiple relationships fail in the time since season 8 ended that I got over quicker. It's actually kinda ridiculous. I sometimes can't even bring myself to watch reaction videos to GOT from new viewers, something I loved to do when it was in its heyday; and if I do, I NEVER follow them past season 6.
All that being said, House of the Dragon is fire (no pun intended), and you should definitely give it a chance whenever you're ready.
Won't be suprised if the doom was caused by experimentation of a new weapon more potent than wildfire

I think doom happened because people became powerful with dragons and used dragons for their own good. It's like after dance of dragons dragons got extinct because people used it against people. Dragons are important to the world to keep balance between fire and ice. Others and Dragons are song of ice and fire. Daenerys restored the balance and i hope no one will claim her dragon since story might repeat again
But how did the Valyrians tame the beasts (Dragons) its not explained?, they were first common folk so how did they change?
