  • The Valyrian Freehold was once the greatest civilisation there ever was. After discovering and bending fire breathing dragons to their control they quickly expanded their borders. Gaining the attention of the Ancient Empire of Old Ghis, who reigned supreme over much of essos. The Ghiscari looked to Valyrian's control over dragons with jealously and desired to claim the power for their own, sparking the Ghiscari Wars. Five Great conflicts followed with Valyria coming out on top each time, until finally they wiped the Ghiscari from the map. Raising their cities, pyrimids and salting the land so that Old Ghis could never grow again. With little contest Valyria expanded into Essos adopting the practice of slavery from their fallen foes, they desired more land and slaves to mine the precious resourced below Valyria. While The Freehold faced little challenge from the Andals and Rhoynar their undoing would come all the same. After a cataclysmic event triggered the eruption of a chain of volcanos on the Valyrian Peninsula. In a single day their great civilisation was sent to the history books. Though other dragon lords survived for a time. Within a few years House Targaryen was left as the old dragon riding family in all of the known world.

It's obvious how the Valyrians did it; just look at Nettles in a dance of dragons. She tamed her dragon with sheep, what were the Valyrians before they were dragon riders, sheep farmers, who likely worshiped the great Shepard. Personally I believed they tamed dragons over hundreds of years through friendship. Then the Asshai taught them blood magic, binding their blood to dragons creating permanent blood bonds.

    Headcanon:
By taking that one account that the Valyrians were taught by a group of mysterious people to control dragons, my guess is that the Valyrians were suppose to be the next generation of Magic Users and defenders of Mankind after the Long Night had nearly wiped out the previous Magic Users but unfortunately the Valyrians' descent into degeneracy and lust for power forced these mysterious people to destroy them.

You know, a lot of people want a show or a book on the Doom Of Valyria…but I genuinely think the mystery of what happened is what makes it so intriguing.
I still to this day stay up at night thinking about Old Valyria sometimes, if what truly happened was ever revealed I think it would ruin it. I get this same feeling from the mystery of what happened to Aerea Targaryen and what could’ve possibly wounded Balerion so badly…these things are like my Roman Empire.

My only nitpicky is that there Dominion only stretched to west essos with how powerful they were it doesn't make sense that they only ruled half of essos not even the whole continent just half that's absurd, they should have expanded to different continents like westsros and southryos thats how real life major super powers usually go , when your that powerful you never just stay in your own playground.

I think the Asshaii legend is the correct one. The ancient people who taught their arts to the Valyrians would have been the Children of the Forest.
We know that the Children can bond with animals, the dragon riders bond with their dragons.
The Greenseers can connect to the weirwoods and see event at long distances, contact people into their dreams. Valyrians sorcerers can connect to their glass candle, made of obsidian, to do the same thing.
The Children helped the Last Hero to forge a magical steel with fire magic and blood sacrifice. Valyria sorcery is rooted in fire and blood magic, their valyrian steel is imply to be made with blood sacrifices.
The Children live in caves full of corpses and the Shadows Lands is a mountainous region with a lot of caves and there is a city call the corpse city.
In the show we can see that valyrian steel can kill the Others just like dragonglass and in the books the dragonsteel sword made with the Children is also describe as having the same powers as dragonglass. So the tv series already confirmed that the Children did make "valyrian" steel and are most likely the ones who taught the Valyrians how to make it and how to tame the dragons.
HoT D also has material implying a connexion between the Valyrian gods and the Old Gods of the Children : awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/List_of_characters_created_for_House_of_the_Dragon#Shrubbery

I can see how George R.R.M was based on the Roman Empire, like Rome fought the surrounding nations in Europe and Asia the Valerians did the same. And after Rome fell, Europe lived in the shadow of Rome’s glory for centuries many technological and societal improvements we’re lost. The same happened Valerians it seems. And arguably only in the last hundred years have we truly surpassed Rome in terms of glory which took over a thousand years. And it would likely take the world of ASOIAF a long time to do the same aswell.

My theory is it was a combination of the faceless men getting involved and them delving too deep, stretching the resources and magic of the volcanoes, which awoke something or caused the magic to blow up, creating the equivalent of a nuclear reactor having a meltdown and releasing magic that irradiated and warped everything.
