Interesting. I don't think House Targaryen benefited by becoming the only dragon riders left in the world. I imagine they were comfortable as a smaller less powerful house. For them to be left as the sole family of dragon riders, left them vulnerable to may other power houses attempting to over throw and seize their dragons. They were not accustomed nor prepared to suddenly become the center of power and conflict. I think it's why it was well over 100 years before House Targaryen made a move to become the center of power in Westeros.

in my minds the Valyrians were peaceful sheep rearers who lived in harmony with the more peaceful dragons who migrated from the shadow lands earning there trust similar to nettles feeding them sheep and flew about Valyria heading dragons in peace. As this story reached the empire of geese they thought ha, well, Valyrians are peaceful it would be easy to kill them and tame their dragons. that's when the Valyrians started using there dragons for defence and war against the old empire. but as they had never used them for war before they didn't truly understand it, struggling to command there fire (the command Dracarys wasn't being obeyed). so then that's when they stared to use science, probably infecting dragons blood into themselves and there blood into dragons to form a bond After time this bond became hereditary.

The explanation regarding the Valyrian Wars is that people didn't fight Valyria. They fought one or another House of Valyria. The Ghiscari only fought individual Houses which is why they never felt the full might until the end when all the Houses united against them. The same with the Rhoynar. This is rather suggestive in that it wasn't Valyria which was responsible for all the evil things they did, but individual Houses.

Lady Gray , great vid as always. Valyria and the Valyrians are certainly one of the most fascinating elements of the narrative and its history , from their origins , the heights of power they reached and their eventual demise via The Doom and one that I always enjoy delving into and discussing. And their descendents make up a key amount of importance in the current ASoIaF narrative. Of course a lot of the particulars are not known with the Valyrians , most aspects of them at any stage from their rise to their fall is mostly conjecture and speculation ; of which you seemed to hit on most of them. Very informative vid and you seemed to discuss many possibilities for the contested topics and theories regarding Valyria at every stage.
I personally think the Valyrian's dragon origins came from some outreach or more likely a remnant of the fallen EotD who taught them secrets such as dragon breeding , riding and likely the genetic component that is seemingly necessary to maintain such things as well as likely the recipe for dragon-steel. I just think the Valyrians took it to another level , a twisted one at that which previously probably did not involve blood magic and sacrifice to achieve such ends but the Valyrians were curious and likely implemented such things to push the limits of what they were taught from the EotD. Their governmental structure did seem like a sort of Republic / Empire / Oligarchy hybrid system although the exact particulars are not really known either beyond a few textual clues. But it also can not be ignored that the Valyrians seemed to become a brutal borderline evil empire / regime who ruthlessly conquered , killed , enslaved on a massive scale with torture and seemingly twisted experimentation on many levels along the way ; which of course led to them creating many enemies. Which leads us to The Doom , there are numerous theories , dug to invasively and deep around the Fourteen Flames , in-fighting between the Dragonlords , Lannister gold , the Targs themselves but for me a joint conspiracy between Braavos and the Citadel who likely employed the Faceless Men (eventually based in Braavos) to take out the Fire-mages which initiated The Doom is the most likely imo. Both entities had ample motivation and means to work together towards making that happen.
Anyway , look forward to much more content about the book material pertaining to the Valyrians and more so the Targs in the lead up to HotD from you Gray , as a great refresher and discussion resource .

I'm glad to see Gray taking up this subject. We waited two years for a final season to GOT. And she kept us going all the days and months in between. I'm confident this channel can fill in the wait for House of Dragon (HOD) by a focus on producing vids like these. She is best qualified to give us some 'flames to get us through the valyrian nights' just like the 'juice that got us through the long night'. So I look forward to her chapter by chapter, character by character, dragon by dragon coverage of Fire and Blood over the next two years wait. Thank you Gray!

Valyrian’s are descendants of the Great Empire of the Dawn, particularly the Amethyst Empress & her line. Her line became refugees during the Long Night, as did many peoples, they ended up settling down in the Valyrian Peninsula. They eventually rediscovered their draconic connection, & created the Valyrian Freehold.

Gonna need to see a aource for that. Everything i'vd read says Valyrians were just gost farmers until the Shadow People near Asshai taught them how to use dragons.
The Amythst Empress was from Yu-Ti and was killed by her brother the Bloodstone Emperor no mention of her line continuing anywhere.

I know this is an older video, and I'm re-watching it again. It struck me how this Doom is mirrored in real history. How many mighty Dynasties have fallen. From The Great Egyptian historical Pharaohs, The Roman Empire, Even the lore of Atlantis, Greek Mythology, The Myan Empire and the archeological finds of Temples in Cambodia, China ect.. The lost technologies and Civilizations like Easter Island the Celtic history, Persian, Twiwanacu, Turkey, Syria and Iraq Hittite and Assyria Empires. To listen to a fictional world created by an Author with world's in such intricate of histories, geological mapping and lores like Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings series. It makes listening to these stories all the more captivating.

My guess is that while a strange people from Asshai brought dragons to Valyria and taught them how to tame the dragons, the Valyrians themselves eventually learned or invented blood sorceries to enhance this into something of a psychic bond, binding the dragons to the Blood of Old Valyria.

Please continue to shower us with this kind of videos and am always with you the way and don't what to miss any video by any chance. We love you and your videos because you know exactly what you are saying at that particular moment and anyone could tell that you know more, you have researched about it and I also love your voice projection, it is just amazing to listen to. To be honest, I stop whatever I was doing the moment I receive the notification of your videos and listen to it attentively. Thank you for keeping us entertained.
