FLUSHED AWAY, PS2: i don't have a nose review (ft. HeadphonesUK)

- Yes, finally - it's here: the long-awaited Flushed Away game review! Following the success of the Chicken Run and Wallace & Gromit games, I had high hopes for this one. As in the movie, pampered pet mouse Roddy St James of Kensington is flushed down the toilet, and becomes embroiled in an intense conflict against the evil Toad, who is plotting to dispose of all rodent-kind in the sewer, and ring in the 'Amphibian Dawn'. Well, that's what the movie's all about anyway. A good portion of this game sees Roddy performing miscellaneous tasks that have little to do with the overall plot (you know, just like 90% of the other movie games out there). But that's not necessarily a detriment to a game's overall quality. The question is, is it up to Aardman's usual standards, or should it be flushed away?

Strangely enough, Roddy's two buttlers, while not in the movie, did actually appear one of the trailers for the film. How Aardman had the time to write those two characters out the narrative, yet still animate scenes of for the trailers is beyond me.

Sorry, I didn't get a notification that you'd commented - I suspected this to be the case! They briefly appear in the slideshow-cutscenes so I assumed they were possibly from an earlier version of the film?? Maybe, I don't know. They must have cut them out rather last-minute.

I think this game went into production before the film's story was finalised.

The GBA version is better if you ask me. It follows the movie's plot better though Rita's family is still absent. Having to escape from Spike and Whitey who are actually frozen this time around, an actual boss battle against those two, Roddy actually gets back home before making the decision to go back, Rita actually loses the Jammy Dodger and makes the new one (though it looks exactly the same as the old one)
A little personal added favorite of mine in the GBA version is that right before the fight with the Toad, Spike and Whitey actually seem to turn on the Toad as Whitey smashes a nitrogen pipe after they overhear the Toad wanting to drown all rats.
Cuz it always bothered me how in the movie that the henchrats didn't immediately turn on the Toad the minute he just basically said he wants to cause a rat holocaust on the city and replace them all with his offspring. Pretty sure the henchrats did NOT sign up for committing genocide on their own kind and the Toad would have just disposed of them too had his plan succeeded.
Quite an interesting choice. Dreamworks sure did churn out a lot of tie in video games. Same with many other films based on family movies at the time.

@@idonthaveanose Remember the level where you gotta find flies? Their are some giant dodge balls you'll have to avoid which I find kind of ridiculous.
To be honest I don't recall seeing ads for a video game. Happy meals sure but not any games.
I dunno if Headphones UK mentioned this in his review, but I think the reason Flushed Away was CG was because Aardman Animations’s studio suffered a fire that destroyed various plasticine models and because the amount of water used in the movie could damage the models themselves.
Yeah, I heard that it was to do with how much water was in the movie. He mentioned the fire in the live chat though. 🙂

I do love the movie Flushed Away, the computer animation wasn't that jarring for me but the only Aardman that I watched prior was Chicken Run and that was it. I didn't grow up with Wallace & Gromit.
As for the review, funny and great as always. I actually thought the two of you played off each other quite well, the way you commentate are different styles but in this review it really does work

Flushed Away the Video Game was released on Oct 24 and the movie was released in November/December. Another case of releasing video games before the movie is released. Roddy's two Butlers were in the Trailers. After founding one of the Trailers for the movie. In many ways feel like an early draft of the movie.
I played this game on GameCube before and it was rather good for what it's worth.

Whooh,I missed the premiere. Sorry. However,I'm definitely gonna take a few minutes out of my day to watch this.
Even though it's not related to the game, but it's more about the movie itself. For some reason it took me years to figure out that Roddy was voiced by Hugh Jackman. I grew up with the X-Men movies, before Disney took over Fox and I'm used to Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine. In those films he has more of a American accent, so when I hear Roddy, he sounds like a different character. Even though the Wolverine costume was an obvious hint, I still didn't figure it out until years later. As kids our brains just work differently, then compared to our adult ones.

16:36 one thing I noticed in the review that I’m surprised never got an in depth review was the Wallace and Gromit poster which I assume means there maybe more references to the studio’s films
A lot of the references seemed kinda lazily plastered on the buildings, so I didn't really see them as worth mentioning. I very nearly mentioned Wallace but didn't have anything to say about it other than 'look, there's Wallace'. 😂

You know what’s insane? Until I saw this video, I had NO IDEA it wasn’t stop motion! I guess they managed to do the CGI to look like it so much so it’s hard to tell🤷♀️

This movie traumatized me as a child. I don’t know the aardman style in cgi animation just doesn’t look good. Especially that barnacle scene that scared the heck out of me as a kid just the way it popped out of nowhere is just jumpscare fuel. Even with his eye in that hole is just unsettling😥😣😖

the ps2 version is really pixeled compared to the game cube version
I'm glad I never touched this game and I totally agree about the planks breaking underfoot without warning. "Because that's fair!" as you put it best.
It's a shame tbh - it started out okay. Nothing amazing, but standard movie game stuff. And then it just got worse and worse. And the lighting is awful.
There should be no fall damage in a platformer. Ever.
