Great video Mike! If I was a Filipino, I would be able to honestly say (in some cases) "America is not sending us their best people"
of course not. A lot of guys are looking for a fresh start but hard to change who you are at this stage of your life
They think because their white and have money their better than Filipinos,
LOL, their best people aren't looking for a cheap place to live.
America is not sending anyone anywhere. 80 to 90 percent of the people leaving America are wimps that cry when they can't get it their way. These American are old and falling apart and the women won't give them a second look so they move to a country like the Philippines where this poor desperate cute (not beautiful) girl showers them with compliments and in many cases take their money. I have been in the Philippines many times starting in the early 60's and I could not image living there. I can not imagine living with a cute (not beautiful) girl that's submissive and weak.
@@mikesphilippineretirement I do research with a colleague at the U of San Carlos, so will be in Cebu in December - that's a guarantee that America isn't sending their best people!
I’m from Texas and the majority of us realize things take time. That man might need to take a reality check.
I think the Motor bike being towed was a check of "your not so special man"
I have worked and lived outside of the U.S. for 16 of the last 18 years and in various countries. I can say without a doubt that the Philippines was and still is the most difficult country for me to get used to in terms of business and services. It is the Filipinos kindness, hospitality, generosity, and happy go lucky attitudes that keeps me coming back.
I've been here in the Bacolod area for 6 months now and I think I'm a pretty patient person and there have been times when I caught myself saying, "back in the US...". I keep reminding myself, this is the Philippines and I am a guest here. It's not easy sometimes.
not easy at all. But it is the life we want so we need to take the bad with the good
How do you like living in Bacolod overall?
How is Bacolod, expensive or reasonable? Also, what company has the best houses in a guarded area? Thanks a head of time…
@@jasoncatron1039 It is nice, I live in a small town called Talisay City just outside of Bacolod. I did not have the Bacolod area on my radar but this is where my wife is from. Growing fast with new homes, condo's and shopping.
222jojo,
I appreciate the response. My sister in law also lives in Talisay. My wife is from Bacolod and I'm trying to convince her to move back home . We have a 4 year old son that I would like to grow up around a large family. For the last several years I've wanted to move but financially it just wasn't possible but due to a recent inheritance it's realistic now.
and in USA you can enter illegal, even get healthcare and housing - what a crazy world. but if you enter legal as paying tourist, you not get all this
we are not comparing US to the Philippines
I wouldn’t deal with anyone like this Andy person
Great video Mike. I am a Filipino, retired military here in the U.S living now in Vegas. Appreciate you for being a humble, I lived far north part of Philippines, but love to meet you and your wife when I come visit PI. God Bless.
I lived in Las Vegas from 1997 until 2019
Best advice I ever saw on a comments section was that its best to allow the better part of a day to get anything done in the Philippines especially when dealing with bureaucracy. Helps to keep you sane when you get that little nugget in your head. Remember, we came here to relax and destress. God bless.
Thanks for sharing
Great topic and advice that any Guest to a Foreign Country should adhere to without questioning their rules and regulations or even customs.
charles.....there is nothing wrong with questioning that which is UNREASONABLE. U R A SYSTEM-SERVING SERF.
Hey thanks Charles
Mike great job as always. Expats need to understand they are guests. And conduct themselves as such. No one can beat the system no matter where they are. It will always catch up with you . I really enjoy all you share. Thank you for the work you put in to your content! Keep up the great work and I always look forward to your next VLOG.
Thank you
Thank you, very helpful and informative.
You are welcome!
Good advice Mike Thanks. Rudy G.
Welcome Rudy G
NEVER Raise your voice with a Filipino Especially a Police officer or traffic officer Ever as no matter what You LOSE..As Your Attitude is a complete Reflection of you and it also is bad for the rest of us. There may be quagmire of paperwork and bureaucracy you Must Adhere to their standards and methods and Do it in Advance then everything else becomes smoother. They may not enforce traffic laws but one time i swung into a gas station and traffic officer thought i was making an illegal turn and by just being nice i ended up with a coffee buddy as he was just doing his job and really wanted to make sure i was aware and by being humble and friendly it became a Great experience as i was in no hurry just coming from a Filipino birthday party. And if i get frustrated then try even harder to Laugh about it and only grumble to myself as having a "Proper Attitude" is Most important gauge of how Happy you will be and ability to Adjust / Adapt/ Accept and Have LOTS of Patience.. It's one of the reasons i DON'T hang out in coffee shops with Expats as I HATE hearing them bitch or grumble or even brag as it will mess with your PEACE so just have a Small group of Positive Expats and Allot of Filipinos friends.
thanks for that story great advice Pauk
This is good advice no matter where you are in any country or city.
You go to a country, you abide by their laws. I see the same thing happening here in Belgium with foreigners (mostly Africans) who make it a sport to see how many laws they can break and get away with it.
very true
Natural Law, Common Law and EVRM are higher than so called 'national laws' which mostly are not laws in the first place, but non-binding corporate rules nobody signed for.

Difficult to imagine an impatient person being compatible ( or at peace) in the Philippines.

Mike, great common sense video especially for the newbies 😊
Expats need to come home for a reality check,
Some do some just should not be living in the Philippines
I was told on my first visit to the Phillipines as a Navy Seamen that Asian culture is very sensitive to affronts and rudeness. If he doesn't understand the importance of " saving face" he is definitely in the wrong part of the world.
thanks for sharing that Michael
Very useful information.
Glad it was helpful!
Mike you really run into some winners haha. Have a great week.
Thanks, you too!
You can’t compare the process in the US, to what it is like in the Philippines, and I understand that before going to the Philippines. I remember first, I am a guest in the Philippines, and if you don’t respect them, you will not have a favorable time in the Philippines. If you think you are better than anyone else, because of your ego, or your attitude, you will lose out in the end. Thank you, for making this video, and hopefully it will help others to not make the mistakes of others.😊

You need to tell him he needs to go back to texas before he has a heart attack.

I use a fixer all the time. Some of these folks were former retired employee of the LTO or has a close relative or friend inside the office so the process is quick.
yes sometimes can be very helpful
I'm 30 years married to my Filipina , so I think I'm knowing enough how to behave here.
I don't take advice from bloggers who think they know everything about the Philippines coz they are some years married to a filipina.
If you don't pay attention the Philippines will become a hell for you.
Live here is good for most people
People like that suck, and it sucks to have friends like that. Delete.
What I learned since living here and the Banks. If you want faster service fall asleep on your significants others shoulder. The guards will push you to the head of the line. No BS I did that and they moved her to front of line. Lol
Here in Manila, the hospitals still ask you to still have a mask or buy one of theirs😢

Understandable in a hospital.
I am looking to relocate to the Philippines. I agree with everything you have mentioned in the video. Good advice!
Best of luck!

So true!
With exit visa now required, they will get you at the airport if you overstay.

Hothead Andy is gonna get more reality checks in the Philippines if he doesn't cool off. Great video Mike!

Mike, I agree. When you are in some other country, you must obey their laws. Many people think that because they are not from that country, they don't have to follow the rules.
I agree Larry they feel above the law or only need to follow the same laws from the country they came from
Sound advice!! Thanks ad Blessings! Hahaha!

Yes the Filipinos do
Good points in this video, I wouldn't recommend fixers though - it's illegal.
Blows me away the amount of expats with no patience. Especially if you're retired.. slow down, enjoy life. You have the time to wait in line a few hours. Be thankful for that.
You can easily apply a month early for your visa extensions, no excuse to get behind.
Take care Mike
A tip about that filing early i want two days ahead of time to immigration for my 6 month. They told me you should be there for 7 days ahead of time because the processing time. I sweet talking for a little bit and they didn't charge me anything extra or anything for maybe it was just a warning

Wait in line for a few hours😬😄
@@user-of2co3ke5p unfortunately I have spent many hours in line at LTO. A couple of times for 4 hours, and returned home with nothing due to various reasons lol
Good video Mike, but I had a situation out of the ordinary with my Tourist Visa. I got behind in my visa payments because of Covid. We were locked down for a long period of time & I wasn't able to take care of my payments until the restrictions were lifted & I had my Vaccine shots. Finally got to Immigration & they had no compensation because of the pandemic so I ended up paying late fees, penalty fees, regular fees, & other fees. I'm sorry but in a case like that the government should give people like me a little bit of leeway, but this govt. here in the Philippines didn't give me any breaks. They made me pay everything. It totaled over 130,000 pesos by the time it was all said & done. I am sorry but that just isn't right.
That is the same thing Ted had to do.
I was in the Philippines all during the pandemic as well. The local Immigration here also closed down and I was unable to renew my visa. However, they soon opened up and gave retroactive visas for all like me. I feel it went as good as could be hoped for.

Excellent video! I hope my post isn't getting to this thread too late to be seen. I'm intrigued by the idea of hiring "fixers" for various tasks that I find tedious. I've heard of hiring locals to handle mundane tasks like paying utility bills, but this is the first time I've heard of using them for DMV registration.
What else can they be used for? I'd love to see a video devoted to this one subject!

Great information video. People need reminded we not in America. But their will always be those that think they don't have to listen to the rules. It's going to make it harder on the rest of us expats.

I'm sympathetic with the first guy. Needing to stay at LTO a full day to get your registration is absurd. I've lived here 25 years, and I've never been asked for my immigration status. I don't carry anything that shows I'm legally here. One time, I had to open three bank accounts at BPI for my three kids, so they could receive their social security. It took the bank FOUR hours to do this! Philippino customers waited patiently for their turn. I've never used a fixer, but I see a lot of people do. Some have other people goto the cable tv and internet place to get service. Many philippinos give their ATM cards to other people, because they're too lazy to goto the ATM themselves. Good video Mike!
25 years 3 kids. Your enjoying the Philippines
@@mikesphilippineretirement I have 6 kids here. Don't sell me short. If you had a kid with Janet, you could get half your full social security benifit, for you kid, for 18 years. You have to admit, that having to wait all day to get your vehicle registered is bullshit. What a fucked up country. I have an electric bike, so I don't need license or registration. Lol! They have checkpoints here in Angeles too. They stop the pinoys on bikes, check their papers, and have a flatbed truck right there to haul them away.
If one lacks patience, he has no business living in the Philippines.
they will find it hard to live here
I accidentally allowed my visa to lapse by three months, (the result of bad advice from a 'fixer') I was interviewed by the chief of the local immigration office and was 'punished' by having my application for Residency reset to zero. Much less painful than being deported and blacklisted! I'm quite sure that if I had been arrogant and demanding instead of respectful, the outcome would have been severe. Lesson learnt.
lucky you
all you need to carrie is your acr card thats why they give it to you. atleast thats what they told me when i asked
You are right the ACR card words for ID.
Mike, Not sure these are cases of procrastination. More like, disobedience or knowingly disregarding the rules. I say that as a professional Procrastinator! 😉

Mike, when I was in the Phil’s I tipped the family every time they came and took me and my fiancé somewhere. They asked why I was giving them money. They didn’t know what tipping was. After a few times they asked me to stop tipping them like that. The family treated me like a king but I’m sure if I offended them. I told them it was our culture to tip taxi drivers, they did know I was only having fun and being generous. This was in Pangasinan Umingan city.

When I was in US Special Forces my job took me to 35 countries. Met many Americans like Andy, was always embarrassed by them and ashamed of their actions. Yeah I forgot my helmet in Dumaguette when I went to see my now wife in Cebu city. We got stopped by the Cebu police on the way to buy helmets lol. I was pissed that we took a wrong turn and ran straight into them. I bit my tongue and took the ticket. We got our tickets and bought helmets in the same block that we got the ticket. The next morning I caught a cab down to the station to pay the ticket. The police folks in the station were shocked that the foreigner was there to pay the ticket. I apologized for breaking their rules and causing any problems, everyone was happy and I was on my happy way in less than a hour😁👍.
Each of the examples given here demand different approaches: there is little comparison between declining to wear a mask when threatened to do so, vs. impatience and arrogance when challenging law enforcers. These are knarly issues requiring deeper thought than a presumption of arrogance. I say that as a person who has been falsely accused and threatened by law enforcers on several occasions in SE Asia while remaining polite and respectful. It's not just about attitude.
❤❤❤
thank you Edgar
Hi Mike and Janet. I am giving a heads up for folks working on getting a 13a visa or an ACR-I card. Evidently president Marcos said something about being more strict in the immigration Department during a press conference. The employee s at immigration are now nervous, very very detailed , and go over everything at least twice. I was in the immigration building in Manila yesterday and not one person was okay with their paperwork, including me. My copys were not clear enough and they need to see my Filipina wifes passport. Finally this morning I was accepted. I now have to wait seven working days to pick it up. They will not mail it. You must pick it up in person. Please do not take this info as me complaining. I love this place. I just letting you know that things have changed.
waiting for your ACR or 13A
ACR card. I applied and received my 13a visa at the American consulate in Houston, Texas while I was back there on business. That allowed me to fly back with no through ticket. When I got to Manila , I thought, this would be a good time to get the ACR card before I fly on to my home in Virac. It has taken 3 days of redoing a lot of details, but, I should get it Thursday, then I can get home. My take away from all of this is the immigration folks seem tense and crabby. They have definitely tightened up. Have a good day.
One thing is constant in the Philippines... slow moving lines. Sometimes it could take all day to get some of the most simple things done!
I'm really looking forward in the next 90 days, of going to the LTO for my Philippines driver's license! 🤪

Drivers license is a catch 22 for us on tourist Visa. After 3 month you need a Filipino license. But you need 6 months visa for the LTO to process it. And now maksimum extension is 2 months. So no way you can get a Filipino drivers license on tourist visa.
I have mine. but that was 2 years ago
Yeah thats what I heard I dont know what im going to do, im going in on a 8 mths stay, no point i buy a motor now.
Does expat pay to stay in other country like Thailand or those neighboring countries.
having that attitude will not get you anywhere in any part of the world, its just nasty, its nice to be nice

Your acquaintances if they told you it would be 25 minutes for a burger be thankful they gave you that information. Now you have the opportunity to wait for the burger or leave. There have been many times all around the world where the restaurant line or checkout line at a grocery store where I left find another restaurant or grocery store or come back another day. As far as the vehicle registration goes find someone to do the registration for you or give it up as long as you aren’t way out in the province you can get by fine without a vehicle in the Philippines.
I take that time to relax. If we are in a hurry we do not stop to eat

No ECC nor ACRI card or rentry permit, just your valid Passport, w SRRV visa laminate and your PRA card.
Great It is the best Visa
I’m going to do the same thing. Far less hassle than dealing with tourist visa renewals where the rules can change at any time as we saw with the 6 month extension going away.
I read that it can take 2 to 6 months to get a vehicle or motorbike registered and paperwork back in the mail. Is this correct and what happens in the meantime if you encounter one of these roadblocks?
when you buy new. You just park your bike until it arrives...(paperwork back in the mail. that is funny)
Incorrect. 30 days after buying the Veh. and registering thru the Dealer, you get the documents at the Dealer. In the mean time, you can drive with the "For Registration" Plate, and always carrying your Original Sales paperwork, to show the "Pópo". (( and they are good for 3 yrs ))
I can’t believe you are still “friends”. All that negative energy!!
Very interesting story. When going through these checkpoints, what happens if you have a Philippine Drivers License, but no Motorcycle endorsement? A fine, ticket? Do they tow the bike on the spot? What if you rented the motor bike or scooter and it's towed away?
up to the officer yes they can tow if the driver is not license to drive a bike. sometimes you can call a friend with the right license to come and get it b4 they tow it
I do my best to be respectful to everyone especially when I'm in a foreign country such as the Philippines because life is much easier that way. Obeying laws also makes life easier. I don't want my life to be harder due to a few bad apples.
We all should agree with that
I’ve traveled to a few parts in the world during the past 30 years or so. Some Americans don’t leave a good impression on locals when they travel. Most do, but the ones that don’t seem to be leaving the biggest impression. I’ve had locals from a few different countries complain to me about the behavior of other Americans. What am I supposed to tell them? I tell them to call the police or to kick them out of their store/restaurant/business, etc… A lot of the countries around the world are less financially fortunate than we are and they will be overly hospitable to make you happy.
Easy. Tell them that's not you.
9:00 All my papers and vehicle registrations are up to date BUT, I was stopped at a check point. The Sargeant asks me, "Are you American?" I answered, Yes. He requested all paperwork, All paperwork was perfect, BUT with my License on his hands, He asked me when did I arrived to Phl. So I told him. (date was on the paperwork). Well here is the point, he said, Im going to give you a Ticket for Improper License.(?) Sir, You have been here for a year now, by Six Months you have to get a Philippines License. The fine is minor and a minor ticket. 300.00 PHP at the Goverment Tax Office. ( in the mean time, dozens of riders drove by, No tags, No helmets, using "chinelas", Sleeveles shirts and So On).........Skin Tax..?😁Oh well.
maybe if you had a Philippine license you would have been on your way and he could have stop someone with no Helmet . You like Andy in a way
Why some foraigners don't follow the rules, and blame the system or the police when they are the ones who are to blame.
Filipine government workers are always friendly and helpful.
It's not the fault of the Philippines government that waiting lines are long.
If you don't like it go back where you come from.
I agree
Your overstay fines continue to accrue while you're in immigration detention as well
they sure do
I have a previous friend that's just as arrogant and always angry at the Philippine people because everything take so long time. He is so rude that even his Philippino in-law family don't speak to him. And he's also paranoid, so he never drive the same way back to home as he did when he left the house because the locals "maybe attac or rob him".
People like that should never been abe to own a passport. Becaus they give the foreigners that follow laws and regulations a bad reputation.
thanks for sharing
Arrogance is a bad trait. Getting po'd at everything will do no good. I am married to a Filipina for 20 years. We share our time between Canada and Phils. Not trying to help Filipinos understand that there might be better ways to do things is disingenuous. There's a reason Philippines is so far behind even their neighbors in Thailand, etc. They need a frame of reference to compare so they can build a better country and stop the spiral of poverty. Just staying quiet and watching the train wreck isnt helping anyone. BUT that advice must be given politely and with humility.
Fixers sound nice might need to think about that next trip
when you coming
Trying to visit again in December
7:07 So how does one find a "fixer"? I would pay them nicely in order to avoid waiting in line.
Whatever the reason, impatience and arrogance can lead to as much trouble as being an alcoholic. It's clear from your examples that personal vices and shortcomings can be exposed (and often amplified) when trying to function in a foreign culture of a developing country. Duly noted Mike. Peace and Love, B Goat
thanks for the comment Billy
He may get deported,
no Andy will not be deported. As for Ted he was and Barry still in jail
Your buddy Andy better be careful. One day he’s going to yell or argue with the wrong Filipino and pay for it. Why would you want this guy as your friend??? He’s one I would avoid.
I am a very impatient man, and I have to fight it so I do not get into any trouble. I have waited in lines of a couple hundred people to get things done and it just took time and I have a lot of that. I know of one man who over stayed there Visa by 12 years and then he wanted to go home he was ill and he got an airline ticket to go home and they would not let him do not know what happened with him in the end other than they would not let him get on a plane, and this man had money.

I won’t be back in the country until after my scooter registration expires. Can I have someone else do it for me?
yes or do it when you come back before you drive it

Hay Mike a question about money agin. I also use wells Fargo but I use express send bank to bank. But the question is do you file FBAR WITH THE IRS the way I understand if you send over $10,000 you have to file. Is that once a year or a lifetime. Say if on time I want to send myself $20,000 and then and I file but the I find some property in the same year and I need $50,000 additional do I need to file agin FBAR WITH THE IRS.
I believe that form is for the state department not the IRS
Good question FBAR something to do with money laundering the philippines government wants to know were that money came from when you bring in 10k or more it must be reported . The question is FBAR a Philippines requirement ?. I assume if money is sent bank to bank that when form FBAR is reported am i right or wrong? By the time my SRRV was valid my US license was five years expired. They will still let you convert but the only credit you get for having the expired license is that you don't have to go through a drivers ed course. I got to the LTO when the doors opened and the line was already insane. Because I was patient and courteous I walked out of there with my new Philippine license the same day, though I'll admit they were turning people away before I finished and shutting off the lights as they locked up behind me. I spent that day watching a parade of people dealing with a barely functional system while holding a positive attitude and an sense of humor. The bureaucracy here is insane but the people are some of the finest I've met anywhere. (BTW use of a motorcycle in the commission of a crime carries mandatory prison time. If you buy a used bike and they are looking for the guy who was driving it when something went down you better be able to prove you were someplace else.)
Who was that you recommended he use so he could save time getting some paperwork done for his vehicle?
A fixer, an intermediary, you can hire them for all sorts of things to save you the hassle, pretty cheap
many fixers in Dumaguete
I went down for my six month extension on my visa and i couldn't get it without the paperwork from an attorney for the reason you want to 6 months. I don't know that still required to have the letter that it's cost $10 or something to have a lawyers but that's where the fixers are through the attorney to use.
just extent on line no extra fee and you can do it from home
Hi, Mike. Is that a mole under your right eye? I can't see clearly at the video, but maybe you need to have that checked. ❤
going into the hospital this next week to check thinks out
Wow wow wow.. I got a lot of empathy for people I care about people that SOB I wouldn't sit and break bread with him if it was the last person on Earth.. I hate to say it but I have no pity for any of those individuals they could be good people bad people arrogant people it doesn't matter... They're not in their country it's like walking into somebody's house you don't tell people their furniture looks like s*** or they don't like the food you're courteous it's common Sense 101.. plus you're retired and another country for God's sake.. I'll be quiet Mike..

Why would you hang out with a guy like that.
The guy is creating the very things that cause him anguish, simply by choosing not to take responsibility for circumstances he finds himself in. None of it is coincidental.
He his creating repeating, negative situations for the purpose of getting his arse handed to him until his ego learns, he humbles himself and decides takes responsibility instead of externalising blame. At this point he may learn to have respect for the environment that he must adapt and harmonise with.

Why to many old farts living in Duemagete ? Trying to live their old lives
Andy is not that old
I'm not old and I don't live in the Philippines but it's pretty disrespectful to refer to someone as an old fart.
Why do you care where someone lives? And what does it even mean when you say they are trying to live their old lives?
