- "'The winters are hard, but the Starks will endure. We always have." - Eddard Stark
In the northern most realms of the seven kingdoms can be found the freezing tundra of the North. Governed by the noblest of Wardens, Eddard Stark and his loyal family. The North is comprised of many smaller houses and when House Stark march to war they can rely on their bannerman more than most. House Karstark, House Umber, House Mormont, House Reed and even the Lords of the Riverlands House Tully will answer the horns of war.
In the game, the resolute and aggressive tactics employed by the Northmen is portrayed by an army who's mechanics center around being backed into a corner and being most lethal at their dying breath. The units and characters available add a whole new texture to the list building side of the game where you can lean heavily into the aggression of House Umber, or the grinding game of House Mormont , or the highly mobile forces of Robb Stark the Young Wolf, or the guerrilla style preferred by the Lord of the Crannogs, House Reed.
And the NCU board is no less hotly contested with fan favourites such as the women of House Stark Catelyn, Sansa and Arya competing against Eddard Hand of the King, Rodrik Cassel and Lyanna Mormont among other big names. For obvious reasons, don't expect to see any House Umber names traversing the landscape of Westerosi politics.
Despite being the oldest faction, we have plenty of new stuff to talk about. Join Grant in the latest episode of our Faction Overview series when he is joined by the North's very own Stephen Connor aka "Pychoste" to discuss the most noble and loyal House Stark.
Let us know in the comments what your favorites are, which tricks we've missed, and how you play your House Stark! Grab a goblet of Claret as "we drink and know things" together!!

great work!
Thanks for the comment Will. Glad to hear you’re enjoying the video!
Great video again - starks sure have lots of build options
Hey! Thanks for the comment and checking out the video. They really do, I think Starks have such a varied and flexible load out available to them.
They can go small and elite or larger with squishy troops and dogs.
They’re also an amazing faction for painters, with so many minor houses at their disposal you won’t be painting the same colours for long! 😊
@@Yecatsminiatures ya sounds cool as I learn game I have jumped around a lot - Boltons and starks have my heart though lol . And plan is go hvy into starks now - plus the Winterfell guard look cool
The Winterfell guard look really nice!!
Bolton’s and Starks. Well and truly pledged to the north then?
@@Yecatsminiatures and dip into free folk but not played them yet . Aye the north remembers :)
Makes me want to play Starks again…ngl 😅 Starks have all the toys!
Such a good faction.
In much the same way as the Greyjoys it’s taken them some slight tweaking to get them in a good place but now they’re running at full speed… or should we say full tilt!! 😅
King in the North!
King in the north!
Cheers David, hope you enjoyed the video!
The young wolf!
Forever young! Awooooo
Such an awesome character and a totally playable character in the game
Playing Starks since patch. Thought I was hot shit with Great Jon and all Umber units. Was tabled by round 3 by that prancing fool, Renly.
Wow that’s interesting. What did he have in the Renly army?
@@Yecatsminiaturesall 2+ and 3+ armor units. Used King Robb NCU to outflank with Great Jon with Greataxes thinking I could get that 11" charge on the flank but he just moved away from them... Ravangers was the better move. oops.
Would you put an attachment in umber ravagers ? Such as winterfell guardian
So Winterfell guardian is always a good choice. I also like the glory seeker for the +1 to panic test rolls and -1 to panic damage making you more reliably keep them in 1 rank. Making them a morale 4 with stubborn tenacity is very nice as well.
That being said. I’d quite happily run them with no attachments as well :)
Don't you think that redundancy si a problem problem radicated in the faction? tactics cards and stark units are often redundant and dont give enough options imho
Hi! Thanks for the comment and the checking the video out.
Do I think there’s some redundancy? I certainly think there are units that’s potentially cover the same roll. For example we talk about karstark spearmen and tully shields being very similar in what they want to achieve on the battlefield. But I think they’re different enough to give don’t options and provide an individual offering to the faction.
The tactics cards are the same, lots of similar triggers and effects. This is a product of the hit Starks took In the 2021 update. Prior to that they could play 6-7 different cards in one activation and that made them extremely powerful. The deck is far more balanced now, is it the best deck? No, probably not. But the good cards are very very good. And cycling the deck for the useful cards is something most factions do. Starks have the added benefit of Sansa NCU to keep the good card cycling back into your hand. I personally, don’t leave home without her.
I guess in answer to your question, I think they have options but it depends on your list build and your play style. What commander do you tend to run?
@@Yecatsminiatures i tend to run Greatjon and Eddard, but i've recently purchased heroes 3 so i want to give Maege and Rickard Karstark a shot.
Btw, what i meant about redundancy is that i think the cards tend to give bonuses that units already have (like vulnerable or vicious) and most of them have roughly the same activation, limiting (in my opinion) the options that you can choose and the flexibility of the deck: last week i've tried my friend's lannister army and the difference in the tactics deck were in my opinion enormous, the flexibility of lannisters cards was night and day compared to the stark's deck.
Another thing that i think is not really good is the 1 rank mechanic, especially the one on the cards: it limits the usage of those cards and forces you to always play on the brink of death with your units. I think that those cards should also include an option for 2 ranks situation.
Would boisterous charisma stop cards like beserker fury and lash out ?
