HOUSE BOLTON FACTION OVERVIEW - A Song of Ice and Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game - 2024 Edition

- "Lord Bolton, he used to say a naked man has few secrets, but a flayed man’s got none." - Theon Greyjoy
"Every great lord has unruly bannermen who envy him his place. My father had the Reynes and the Tarbecks, the Tyrells have the Florents, Hoster Tully had Walder Frey. Only strength keeps such men in their place. The moment they smell weakness .... during the Age of Heroes, the Boltons used to flay the Starks and wear their skins as cloaks." - Jaime Lannister to Brienne of Tarth
In the cold tundra of the North past the noble battlements of Winterfell, lies the cold dark denizens of the Dreadfort. Home to the cunning and manipulative House Bolton, governed by The Leech Lord, Roose Bolton.
For years Roose has fought, served and carried for the Wardens of the North quietly waiting for an opportunity to lay claim to the title himself. The war of the five kings may be the opportunity. Who can really believe a House that not only flayed its enemies, but wore their skins as cloaks would ever truly be honourable.
In the game House Bolton lay down a barrage of panic tokens, not only to push through their panic damage but to spend as currency. Truly representative of a House that uses terror pay off their debts.
They offer a budding general a decent amount of healing potential and can hit quite hard with the right cards. They can heal up when they need to but not as efficiently as the servants of House Greyjoy. They can get the big impact turns when needed but can't have as many as House Stark. And they offer some control in the form of punishing/stopping the opponent doing what they want, but not as much as House Lannister can. Jack of all, master of none….
As a brand new mini faction options may be slightly limited, but despite this putting up some slight limitations, we have plenty of new stuff to talk about. Join Grant in the latest episode of our Faction Overview series when he is joined by the North's very own Aaron Taylor aka "Midnight" to discuss the most cunning and ruthless of Houses.
Unfurl the Banners of a House Bolton for now is the time of The Red Kings….

Great job, I really enjoyed this video. It makes me to want to play more Boltons... especially that bit about "skilled players want the challenge that Boltons present". Even if I lose, I'll take solace in knowing that I intentionally handicapped myself. 😆 All jokes aside, I've anecdotally had much better success with Boltons than their Stats numbers would suggest. They're a very fun faction and, when their mechanics work for you, they can be devastating to play against.
While it is possible to be more successfull than Stats may suggest, its still not possible to compete in a competetive enviroment. I would even say, that against an equally skilled player, no matter his faction, your handicaped at least. If opponent plays one of the top Factions I would say there is no chance to win :/
Edit: But they are really a fun faction, dont get me wrong. For beer and prezel, a round of bolton can be hilarious either way :)
Really enjoyed recording this! Thanks for having me on!
Pleasure having you on Aaron. Got some little gems from our convo. Been list writing all afternoon 😊
This was a great vid! Boltons are what got me started in this game, grabbing my interest, so lovely to see a vid like this!
Very insightful looking at everything! Don't suppose in the future you might take a look at what neutrals could add to a Bolton list? Curious now that they're available!
Great vid!
Baked bean armour
Can't unsee that now
House Bolton.

Solid faction review! Gives me hope for greater things…. Had good fun with Steelshanks and a double bastard girl list today…. That rush of aggression is such a good card!
Thanks Karl! The double bastard girl list has mileage! There’s some decent stuff in the conversation. I’ve been list writing all afternoon! Haha
Ramsey Snow Spiteful Heir is my new love of the game. Immense Healing and Reek dishing out panic
I’m definitely going to give him a try in spears. Looking forward to it
Great video, Grant and Aaron! My brothers just started a Bolton army so good tips to take him down thanks 😂
Boltons are really fun to play, everything is very flavorful
Does Jeyne Poole and Walder Frey not give the initiative back to your opponent the turn after you steal it? I thought that it did but I’m also a newer player so maybe I’m wrong. Having first 5 turns in a row seems really good…
Initiative does return to the other player the following round. Basically you can take Initiative for 4 rounds out of 6, and games rarely make it to the 6th anyway.
they need a moral buff across the board their infantry units (
So... is two bastardgirls worth it... I.keep eyeing a second box...
Bolton's have two defensive units. Flayed Men can be a vanguard or support. The last 3 units are support. So keep in mind if you're getting two Girls you have two supports in your list taking 14 pts.
My question is when everything is good or at least solid why did the faction perform overall only bad/mediocre? My only answer is that the underlying panic token mechanic is too weak, at least against some factions. Opinions?
the answer is...everything is not good or at least solid XD
In my last tournament I got steamrolled by a meta Lannister Mountain Imp, and a meta Night's Watch Stone Thrower. I did however won a game with 1 NCU double Flayed Men list.
Panic talking? 🤔
Hey Martin! Cheers for checking the video out. Panic talking? Have I spelled something wrong? 😂
@@Yecatsminiatures it was Aaron's Northern accent.. we pronounce it "Token" down here in Dorne 🤣🤣🤣
Haha! Awesome.
@@martinburke465 captions are always fun to have on any video I'm involved with! 😂
