What a great story, with deeper insights than the simple answer I was originally searching for - the same one you were. Thank you for this! ☮☯

Great video, great story, great point. Thanks for this one. Some comments below:
Robben story: I was in one of the first GIT classes and got to spend some time learning from Robben, along with a number of other amazing musicians. At the time, 1978, Robben was endorsed by Yamaha, who had come out with some solid state amps and their version of a Gibson 335. I remember seeing him play a gig with his Gibson and whatever tube amp he was using at the time, then a few days later, seeing him at another gig playing the Yamaha versions of the guitar and amp. His tone? Fantastic both times. I remember thinking that I couldn't tell the difference. Of course it wasn't an A/B comparison, but as a "critical listener" audience member it was eye opening.
Similar, but different: I've spent most of my life also involved in the whitewater world, often in a professional capacity. I see the same thing there: all of us pretty good kayakers can't wait to get the latest new boat because it will somehow take us to the next level. Funny thing is, the next level athletes perform at the next level no matter what they're paddling. Of course a good boat makes it easier, but in the end it really isn't the boat.
My favorite cartoon that says it all: Wish I had a copy but I'll just have to describe it. There's an old fashioned walk up box office with two ticket windows. One of them has a sign above that reads "New Pedals". There are about 50 people in line. The other one says "Guitar Lessons". There are three people in line.
All that said, I still love gear and find myself having to cull the herd way more often that I should. As a full time working guitarist these days, you'd think I would know better. Call me a happy hypocrite! Life is fun when you take your craft seriously but can still laugh at your "sapien-ness". Cheers, and thanks again for the great videos!

I'm glad I stumbled onto your video. I'm 69 years old, played guitars as a hobby since I was 13 and have been on the never ending tone quest ever since. Just one more guitar or amp or pedal. I wasted lots of time when I should just focus and enjoy playing what I have.
BTW, I have a Zendrive, A Klon and a tube screamer so I think I WILL BE THANKFUL AND GO PLAY! LOL! Peace!!

Years ago I saw Robben play at 3rd & Lindsley. At the show I sat next to Larry Carlton and had the opportunity to chat with him. After the show, Larry took me to meet Robben. I have pictures!!!

The DUDE has a bit more treble than the Zen drive.. The Zen sounds warmer ! BTW "Warm Audio" has their version of the "D" style pedal that's real good ! The best YT demo of a "Dumble" in a box that I've heard was the "Van Weelden Royal Overdrive" ! Don't know what they sound like in person but sounded crazy on one CZcams demo.. - I have personal experience with the "Custom Tones Ethos" overdrive pedal... It's by far my favorite drive pedal ! It sounds good with any amp.. Don't know if the "Van Weelden" sounds good with affordable amps but the demo of the thing was outrageous .. think they used a "Two Rock" or some nice boutique amp for that demo ! Don't always trust demos done with amps that'll make anything sound good !

I've got the Dude and I use an AC30 with multiple Strats, a 335, and Jimmy Page Mirror Tele. I find it likes single coils better than humbuckers. At least when I'm playing. I'd say it sounds the most "natural" with a Tele to my ears.

You got it! The Robben sound isn’t a pedal or an amp. It’s him. He sounds the same through anything in that ball park. He used a zendrive and a hit rod deluxe while here in nz and sounded like him. It’s always worth trying to find ones sound though and experimenting with lots of different gear is all part of that

Yes after years play season professionals can play rigs that are night from day yet still have their sound. It’s in the phrasing, the bends the soul ect. It all comes from the fingers

Yuval Harari is the absolute best. And as for the pedals, just keep both on your board and use them as different tools!

I have recently discovered pushing a Zendrive into a Electro Harmonix Octavix then goes into a Fender Twin and playing with the guitar volume it rely blew me away and that is now my tone I love it.

The dude is slightly more “gritty” or dirty sounding to my ears through my phone anyway but tbh I prefer it on these examples. Yeah have a dude on the way now.
A lesson I learned very early on; it’s not about the gear, it’s about the player and the hands on the instrument.

That's a really wonderful story, I am going to check out that book. All this reminds me of something I read in a John Scofield interview, he talked about how when he was young, he always wanted to sound like other people, Wes Montgomery, Pat Martino,Jim Hall etc, but it never sounded good. He then thought, "I guess I'm stuck with myself, let's see what I can do with that".
BTW, what did Robben order? Maybe if I eat the same thing, I might be able to play like him 😁.

Robben's got endorsement deals 😝 so he probably didn't want to jump out there , plus he's playing $50,000 to $100,000 dollar Dumble amps 😳or some custom built/tweaked boutique amps and he doesn't want to tell you that a $150 dollar pedal will never get his tone 😜.. in addition Some musicians try to be too deep.. He's reading a book that's supposed to help him understand how GOD created the universe 😂 good luck with that... cuz the author of the book doesn't even know ... smh
