  • For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ This was a question that has come up quite a bit - the Dude or Hot Rubber Monkey - which do I prefer? Honestly, this is the first time I've put them side by side, and I'm struggling to decide....So the answer is...Both.
I think they're quite close tonally, and if Dumble ODS tones are your thing, I don't think there's a better pedal at any price.

Thanks for making this demo, I've been waiting for someone to compare these two pedals! The only really noticeable difference I heard was with the gain all the way up, the Dude sounded a little brighter, the HRM a little darker. Hard to say which is "better," may depend on the amp, guitar, pickups, etc. Both sound great! Oh, loved your clean tone as well!

Thank you for this video. I hear the differences between them, and it has helped me on deciding to ge the Dude. Not that the HRM isn't cool, but it sounds more high-gain and Marshally, and I've got tones of those sounds already. I love them, of course, but I feel that the more gainy they get, they also lose some sparkle and life, and the Dude has plenty of that. Thanks again!!!

Hey John, have you tried to replicate an ODS with the Rockett Melody?
If you try and get it, please, post the eq settings.
I have a Melody, but I can't compare, for instance, with a Dude.
    Cheers.

Really considering the dude. Not gigging these days. If I can ever get my Lonestar Special repaired, I think it’ll pair nicely. Curious how it’ll sound with my Marshall or Blues Jr. May bite the bullet and order one today. Lol

I tried it with a friend's Marshall Slash signature the other day and it sounded cool, the treble knob is versatile enough that you can keep things smooth

I definitely prefer the dude. Somehow it is smooth and creamy for leads, yet has a snarly growl for rhythm work, all the while staying pretty clear and open....I’m def on the hunt for one now that I’ve seen a few of your vids! Nice tone and playing btw 👍

What amp are you using on this demo and what pickups are on your Strat? I’m curious since both those factors play a role in the tone as well. How both the guitar and amp react to any given pedal. Great tones and playing.

I'm a fan of J Rockett pedals ( however ) I'd try a Barber Gain Changer SR - it is so Amazing and versatile. It's not marketed as a Dumble-clone, but it has so many tonal options and sounds phenomenal with my Strat.

I think The Dude has a tiny bit "creamier" of a sound while the HRM has just a tiny more "bite". Personally I think I like The Dude more, which is good because I have one on the way due to your demos showing it off. Thanks for this comparison!

johnnathancordy - I’ll bet it sounds awesome with the tweed! I dialed mine in with my 5:50 on clean channel and it absolutely matched that tone I’ve had in my head for years!! It’s amazing to me how it can be exceptional at just clean boosting but can then dig into overdriven creaminess and punch when needed. Exceptional pedal indeed my friend!

The dude sounds a bit more versatile maybe? In the sense that it could work with more guitars and amps. I mean the HRM is thhhhiiiickkk as hell and maybe with an LP for example it could sound too thick. Or with a very bass-y amp like mine (victory v40D). Sounds really good though with the strat I got to say

@@gdo6927 I actually had to replace the silver metal knobs on my Dude v2 cause on stage they caused so much reflection from the overhead stage lights that it was impossible to adjust the pedal. I just ordered some white plastics replacement knobs with a nice black line indicator. The new knobs are much easier to grab as well. I love the sound of the pedal. But my only other complaint is that I wish it took a 9v battery. Sometimes I just wanna take my amp and the dude to a gig, not a pedalboard, power supply etc.

Sorry but not a good demo. Matching control settings and then comparing between the two only demonstrates to me that they are in fact different circuits requiring different settings to achieve the best sounds they're capable of. Each pedal is going to need different tweaking of its own. In each case where it sounded like the HRM was darker or muddier, all you had to do was tweak the settings to make it a bit brighter or more clarity, ..... then it would have been a good, fair comparison.
