About the Taiwan thing in the beginning. Dutch and Spanish tried the Northern in 1500s and France tried there too in 1800s. They all got a piece of land and can't get more since actually there is mountain around. Very hard to gain stronger from there. So the Southern might be easier. Dutch loved there so much.
