McCafferty was an emo/indie/punk/pop punk/alternative band. They're no longer together due to the behavior of their singer Nick Hartkop. But honestly if you're watching this video, you probably already know that.
Thank you to everyone who has watched and supported this series. It's the biggest project I've ever taken on, ever. And I'd be lying if I said it didn't mess with my mind at all when working on it. No regrets though, it was a blast to make overall.
If you're still reading, I'm gonna be going full pop doggie for the rest of 2020. Also, by next month I should have Matesclub up and running again. So, merch is on the way. I just wanna make sure it's done right. So that way you mates can get cool quality stuff.
We're going full pop doggie, but we're also not gonna rush things. Quality first, but we're still going full pop doggie.

Bro you should really look into burger records especially right now
Please make a video on spanish love songs I feel like there’s no way you haven’t heard of them they just dropped an album and have toured with twy
Its ashame hes a terrible person if all this is true because they're music is actually good and I enjoy it I guess just remember you can like someones music but not them. Stay safe out there and be strong.
And woah is that guardin the guy who's music I binge wtf I didnt know he was involved I love that guy woah
the fact that nick used to be a special ed teacher is honestly terrifying
Man if you think that’s terrifying look up the requirements to be a substitute teacher in your area, they let basically anyone do that shit
@@erikmolnar6585what do you mean by d/o and dx? Genuinely asking lol I tried to look it up for context but I’m still in the dark…best I could find was “delivery order” 😂
@nicknobles4453 I think I was drunk when I wrote that? He is certainly a great songwriter. I'm sorry to hear all that is being said in this video if it's true?
When I got to that part where Nick compared himself to scott pilgrim I audibly went "oh my gooooooooood". Nate I wish you could have seen my eyeballs roll back into my skull.
Guarantee you that he had said "I'm in lesbians with you"
Roll? I almost gouged my own eyeball out
At least Scott learned from his mistakes
@@PLAGUE-KARM No he didnt
The fact that this even needs 3 videos is absurd
“I’m so impulsive, I’m so repulsive” well you got that right, Nick.
It sucks bc that particular song is so catchy Hahahaha
But it’s like nick almost has this self-aware factor and writes about himself sometimes under the guise of it being another story lol
Nate The Mate Yeah he definitely does. Man, I hate that I love that song. I like it a whole lot less now than I did before but was still always drawn to the Jeff & Becky story. Huge shame about Nick.
Good series, wouldn't be surprised if a part 4 came out in the future.
If a part 4 comes out , I won’t be watching , at that point he’ll just be exploiting the turmoil and terror that these people have gone through because of this bands singer, yes people need to know how much of a garbage person he is , but all the victims stories are just being exploited for views. That’s just how I see it , I love Nate , but he seems to milking this.
Gnarwolf yeah pretty sure he’s the guy who owned PopPunkMerchWall. it’s really weird hearing him talking about this because he would defend Moose Blood and Brand New when all of that stuff came out. also weird how his name is NateTheMate. 😓
Gnarwolf wait, kind of confused so nick really is bad or good?
Oh no you were onto something
A part 4 just came out😳
If you want to continue to support the other members of McCafferty (Chris, Wes and Evan), check out these bands:
Sister Sandy (Has all three of those mentioned above)
Ola Mesa (Has Chris and Wes, plus three other members)
Kid homeless (A pseudonym Evan goes by)
Just because Nick is a piece of shit, doesn’t mean you should cancel all of McCafferty (though you definitely shouldn’t listen to or support their music anymore). Chris, Wes and Evan are still out there making music and they deserve as much love and support they can get in these times.
Thanks that's really helpful
Sister Sandy and Ola Mesa are fuckin amazing. i pirated all of my old favs by mccafferty, no need to support nicks raggedy ass. theyre lowkey ruined for me, though.
I shouldn’t listen to Mccafferty cause some guy is an asshole ?
I don't personally agree with the not to listen to Mccafferty anymore part, just pirate them. I tend to separate the art from the artist to, as long as I'm not supporting him and just stealing the music, I don't see the problem
@@plasmidboi8381 hell yeab pirating is rad but i think they mean like streaming nicks music on spotify and youtube where he can get paid yknow?
Love your content Nate, just wanna say you fill an untapped niche in content about emo/punk music as in there's no one else like you on this platform and I appreciate it so much
this is a HEAVY compliment. thank you so much.
Ouji Beach is also really good
Absolutely agreed, there’s not another channel I can think of that covers this kind of content from this genre.
Hard agree
That one dislike is nick
Another one will be coming from Emily
Nate The Mate not really there’s still some fans that are defending him till death
@@BigSmoke-lf9jk i still listen to McCafferty
Rebel & The Hearts so do i but i don’t support him nomo
my dog actually disliked this video but that was on her account
that boy guardin mad cute tho
YES
He his so cute but I could not get over the fact that his name is literally Nick Kerr
Oh No I’m a Failure chill
He is tho
he is also insanely talented, go support him🥺
4:40 lol of course nick relates to scott pilgrim
Honestly if you listen to some of his lyrics you can see this kinda stuff coming from a mile away
As someone who was listening to them from the beginning, it was pretty obvious that getting signed and doing a tour would ruin Nick.
I had seen them play out in Pennsylvania at a venue called "The Chameleon Club" a few weeks prior to the moose blood cancelation, and Nick was incredibly high. So high that he completely forgot how to play his songs, and didn't have his guitar plugged in for the entirety of a song.
The latest latest tour cancelation was just as bad. Saw them in LA, Nick was insanely stoned, made sure we all knew that he was, and sold us merch that was just white Hanes Tshirts with marker on them.
I've actually still got it lying around somewhere. Pretty ridiculous.
Wow that’s honestly disturbing and sad. Thank you for sharing
@@NateTheMateForever For real. I thought the Hanes thing was a little odd, and then a few months later leaked texts come out with Nick losing his mind about how they hadn't received merch for that night.
Crazy how those texts were exchanged hours before I saw Nick totally blitzed.
Why'd you buy it tho
Broo on depop i saw someone selling one of those shirts 😭
I like to think that everyone deserves a "second chance", but Nick makes it really hard for me to stick to this principle. Even if he eventually becomes a better person it won't erase the damage he's done.. I'm really not sure what to think anymore 😕
let's be real - Nick's on his like. 11th chance
“maybe no one is perfect
But I believe that you are pushing your luck”
Nick is currently on his 37th chance. Everyone deserves a 38th chance
Everyone deserves a second chance to a point(rapists don’t). And even then, an 8th or 4th chance is honestly almost too many chances. Like, at that point you’re possibly enabling their behavior.
he had a second chance, he had so many chances. but nothing he can do now will make me like him. he’s an abuser
I usually can separate art from artist, but this guy? Yikes. Mccaferty just will never feel the same way again and I will never listen to them ever again.
Me listening to outlaw while watching this vid 💀💀
@@BigSmoke-lf9jk welp i guess you're such a fucking outlaw
But can we all take a moment to appreciate Nate for how well put together this series was? 👏
4:43 That comparison made me psychically cringe. Tells you all you need to know about the guy.
I applaud the extreme caution saying "Nick Kerr"
Listening to Dead Bird really hits different after all of this
Listening to everything hits different.
"But I'm an asshole, asshole, yeah. At least according to your friends"
"I had a one night stand but I never kissed her on the bed
And all of my best friends say I'm fucked in the head
Well I don't like working with my friends
I don't like getting high, but I will do what it takes so I can survive"
my question is how the heck they let this crazy person a teacher
It’s scary how certain people can present this really clean image of themselves to 99% of society. But there’s that 1% of people that it person’s life that know who they really are deep down inside
I've been waiting for thissss
Same here.
thank you so much!
@@NateTheMateForever ofcourse :)
Nate used the Leafy song 😳
hahaha it's the content cop theme song too tho!
what we do here is go back - otis mcdonald
@@NateTheMateForever Oh shit, you're right! I forgot all about content cop. And thanks for the original too!
Really informative series man, glad there's a channel on CZcams that covers shit like this.
Super well produced / well edited videoes as well. Keep doing what you're doing
I appreciate how thorough you are in your investigation and story telling you’re one of the few people who I deem trustworthy in the scene man keep it up!
This has been such a crazy series. I only recently got into the band and am so glad I didn't pay for any of their merchandise. As much as I adore the other members and appreciate them putting up with Nick the Dick, I cannot support them after learning all of this. Thank you so much for taking the time to research this and put it together for us all.
bro McCafferty just released this sort of apology and resignation song called 'Isn't it beautiful?' and it caused me to go to see what the fuck was up with the band and holy shit I was not expecting this three part ass blast of horrors. Maybe even four parts soon, who knows 🤷♂️
Nate you've been making some of the best and most informative video I have seen about these bands. Your channel has changed so much to something very special and your the same guy that ate a picture of Parker Cannon at one point. lol!! Keep up the good work my friend!
I love watching someone that feels like a representation of me and my friends talk about the stuff that we care about, your channel really is like no other! Keep it up man
man I wish I had friends to talk to about this kind of stuff lol. glad you do
GOOD STUFF NATE! i really enjoyed how you placed everything and all that jazz. keep up the good work!
this series was super helpful in understanding everything with Mccafferty. i found the band last summer and liked some of their stuff, but this..... is a lot. thanks for making this. the editing was really effective!
It's a lot, and it's not even the half of it.
Yo Nate, I just wanna say, well done! Such a good series! Well done for your hard work
Brother I truly love you, your channel and what you're doing and building towards... I see great things for this channel much love
Love you mate. Thank you.
Late to the party, but I worked at The Exchange for 10 years. Hearing this story is wild and I'm trying to remember if I ever came across any of this throughout my time
Great work dude! super high production quality
This is a great series! Well done Nate!
this has been so well done, congrats Nate
Nate’s doing God’s work on this channel
The funny thing is, coincidentally after you uploaded this, nick made a new song “isn’t it beautiful”
The songs lyrics are basically him reciting all the things he said including “I’m gonna kill wes” and “your baby is gonna fucking starve” and all that
I hate that I enjoy his music, I hope he gets something extreme so he cant earn money off of the times I listen to his music.
Download it all. Most CZcams videos are claimed by Nick, and their Spotify is of course monetized.
thank you for this series of videos; they were hard to watch, so i can't imagine how hard they were to create. i know that i appreciate the effort, though. as a previous fan of mccafferty some of this stuff is hard to swallow, but i think i'll just go listen to the front bottoms while hoping nick never gets away with any of his bullshit again.
Appreciate you. It was tough mentally at times, but I knew what I was getting myself into haha
Hope you have an amazing night
Ya missed the bit about Wes quitting the band, and their August west coast tour that Nick actually managed to complete (holy shit right?), But other than that, good job. Had no idea about the guardin stuff.
Ah, those were definitely oversights on my end. I believe I talked about Wes leaving in the first episode when I read his testimony, but I should have included it in this part too for the sake of the timeline.
And I had no idea about that August tour tbh
Anyway, thank you very much for the criticism and compliments. Now I know what I can improve on next time. Hope you have an awesome night
So sad, I loved this band religiously for years but after buying tickets for the guardin tour and never getting a refund and finding out about all this shit, its impossible to support nick anymore. Good series man great job documenting all this information🤟
The long awaited finale! Thank you Nate!
Thank YOU!
Before all this I heard some rumors and thought I'd just pirate their music but damn I can't take joy in there music anymore
I have a hard time associating the art with the artist. So I can still enjoy listening to their music tbh. But it really just depends on you as a person.
Hope you have an awesome rest of your night
Shout out guardin. The only reason I know who mccafferty is is because he covered them on stream and it was sick.
guardin is a living legend
Nate you are just insane at video essays man, so talented it's unreal
Thank you my fellow Nate
Love the rise and fall stuff so intressing and informative
Does anyone else remember when nick tried to start beef with wicca phase springs eternal?
Dang it!!! Yes, over the dead bird song right? It was during his Suffer On era I think
Yea! that was actually what got me into emo rap and ironically wicca has become my favorite artist since then.
Waiting for you to make an emo documentary.
Should I just make one huge, feature-length documentary called “Midwest Emo” ?
If enough people say “yeah”
Nate The Mate that would be an absolute treat! Get a production crew and travel the mid west and interview bands who have impacted the scene. Your take on the genre and the mid west it self.
@@NateTheMateForever do it do it do it
Nate The Mate Yes yes yes please. Please please actually please
Nate The Mate yesssss do it
broooo i love guardin he’s my favorite artist and it was so dope to see him in this video
I love your videos. Any chance there could ever be a video about worst party ever?
This was a great video series. But please stop zooming in on this dudes creepy ass smile haha.
Hahaha much love Allen. Thanks for always watching and commenting.
You’re welcome!
Also if you’re curious, my buddies and I have started a podcast called Hungry Hip Hop you should check it out. We’re still getting started so not every episode is great. But I know you also like rap so give it a shot if you’re curious!
This was a ride from start to finish. I’m so glad we have all this information in one place so people can learn about the awful shit Nick has done and not support him or get close to him
The crazy part is, it’s now 2024 and McCafferty just dropped a new song 😂
feel so thankful I got to see them on tour before they left
Damn dude. You went hard on Nick. Good.
Even though the tour wasn't coming to my town, I was excited and proud to see Guardin on a tour with McCafferty because I love(d) both people. I was wondering what Guardin had to say about Nick; Good to see him speaking up about his experience
Nick is such a good dude. He sent me manga in the mail 😭💕 He’s literally pure
I love Lydia so much. Love you too Nate. Nice series.
love you Justin! I don't think I've ever heard a Lydia song, just their name haha. Where should I start?
@@NateTheMateForever the album Illuminate (: its so good, front to back.
Love guardin. My only interaction with him was when I dm'd him on Instagram and said "drugs are bad" and he responded "fuck you". Releases cool music tho.
Gosh the nerve. If one of my bands got a tour offer like that. No question we would be grateful and adjust
I bought tickets to see their show in AZ and was so bummed out and shocked when they didn’t play now I know why
Great series Nate!
Thank u thank u!
@@NateTheMateForever welcome welcome
The best trilogy
I know a boy my age (16) who’s going this way. He’s been going this way for a couple years at least. He’s manipulative and can be violent at times (fortunately he never hurt me). I left him over a year and a half ago, and he’s gotten worse since then. I feel bad for his future girlfriends.
That’s so sad
and hes back... dropped a song this year.
i just realized he went to the same “the exchange” i go to regularly in akron ohio... wow
I would seriously listen to the entire phone call with guardin tbh lol
Maybe I'll start a podcast and have him on haha
Nate The Mate 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
hella respect for guardin
Man, I love some emo/punk stuff only really like a few of their songs and never got super into them. (Much more into heavy metal/hardcore music) but I believe people are way to passive in this scene. Don't have much nice to say after that so will leave it there.
Great content btw.
I was at their Cat's Cradle show!
Because you bring up Lydia...I would love to know what Nate thinks about their album “Illuminate”. I’m not a huge fan of most of their other work but I think Illuminate is a masterpiece
Do you think you can do a video about origami angel by any chance?
When he said “a guy named Nick contacted me” I was like OHHHHH FUCK
moral of the story, dont ever trust NOBODY that relates to Scott Pilgrim
Nate, carefully: "Nick ..Kerrrr.."
broke my heart when he said im sorry at the end of jessica's testimony.
After that video I had some of their songs recommended but I was kinda upset and just listened to Wii Tennis lool
This series came to my dash after I started listening to their new single Witchcraft. Shame.....That song slaps...
Aw dude these videos are fucking awesome! If you can could you make a rise and fall video on grlwood? :-)
So like, who is gonna be the one to update this with his new song?
dont give him attention
its so funny as he claims to be such an advocate of mental health but litterally doesnt even have his own metal stability figured out.
Blind leading the blind
i need to hear the offensive divva demo
I remember Nick going on instagram live and saying "Divva is a character I created and was inspired by all these new dead rappers like lil peep and about how they glorify suicide, they overdose and shit-" then his ranting just goes on. What he said was honestly offensive and disgusting to say and about a late artist too.
Rigby Torres big yikes
am thebreathingbackwards, can confirm that the tour situation was a pain in the ass. not only did it stress us the fuck out before it all went down, but one of the venues we played actually used mccafferty dropping off to try to scam us out of half of the money from the show. even though we still sold shit out just as a guardin tour. i mean in the end we were grateful to not have to deal with them on tour, me guardin and carousel kings rocked it anyways, but i saw firsthand the way nick treated guardin and all the back and forth texts they had it was insane. its not just that one text, nick would literally act so rude and shitty one night and then apologize the next morning. multiple times. new years was just the tipping of the iceberg. they really almost bombed that whole tour for us, my first tour too, it was wack. they knew we could still do it without them and straight up lied. lame as fuck. rip
i can also confirm how insanely offensive the divva stuff was. like theres some shit in those i wouldnt even say as a 13 year old let alone a grown ass dude
Thank you so much for commenting. I’m sorry all that bs happened to you guys.
@@NateTheMateForever aw its all good. i mean at the end of the day the tour was still sick and high key more fun without them there. i felt worse for guardin, he really tried to be a good friend to nick before all of this and didnt get shit back. im just glad my first tour isnt something i have to not talk about like it would be if it was opening for mccafferty hahaha
Nate: I'm sorry what's your name again?
Guardin: Nick Kerr....
Nate: .......yeah okay we're going to just call you Guardin in the video
The fact this guy works with kids at my old middle school makes me sick.
this is so sad
His eyes literally have no light behind them, that picture of him smiling is freaky
Broooo you gotta release the full call with nick kerr
cut to the present day, and we’re actually getting beachboy 2 this month
Woo
appreciate you commenting and watching
He compared himself to Scott, but he's giving me more of the BoJack Horseman vibes.
Weird he just released a song in February of 2021.
Gotta love a bit of Guardin
What is Divva?
They were rising and falling at the same time
this was a great and informative status
Hey Nate, I'm not sure if you'll see this, but I'm really curious about the relationship between the genres I love and people like Nick. From watching your video on Jank, it seems to me that the music scenes that make me feel a little less alone are full of abusers, and this concerns me. I'm not trying to suggest that if you listen to Jank or McCaffrey that you'll become an abuser, but I'm curious what you think the nexus or correlation between these subjects is? Is this something that happens in all genres, or is this something inherently tied to the words, sounds, and minds of people who create these particular sounds? I can't really listen to either band much anymore without feeling a bit gross, but these are just two bands. That being said, these stories are part of, what seems to me to be, a much greater list of abuse and abusers within these scenes. Let me know what you think.
Peace,
Alex
Thank you for the comment Alex. Very hard question for me to answer, but I can confidently say this: the genres of music you and I love attract very broken people like myself.
Not saying that make anything right, but it attracts broken people
@@NateTheMateForever Thank you so much for your reply. I love your content and really appreciate the amount of heart you put into your work. I'm gonna keep working on this question, but none of my friends listen to emo/ punk/ diy ... Honestly any of the stuff I listen to, so no one quite gets these problems.
Ohhhh nick
gaurdin is dope
Ok I know I'm like 3-100 years late to the McCafferty drama, but I just finished watching these and it's truly depressing. I feel horrible for those who faced Nick's wrath, especially Lindsay, she did not deserve that. But I also feel horrible for the fans who supported him from the beginning and found his music truly comforting The fans who found his music as a saving grace (like me) or a way of comfort, genuinely loved nick. Especially songs like Trees 1-3 which are about the queer experience with homophobic family and relationships and believing you're wrong for being queer. And other songs like Beachboy 2 which I believe is about a boy who went through abuse from his mother (pls correct me if I'm wrong lmao) Then so many other songs of his, one that comforts me is Ugly Duckling which I can see all my faults in my life through. But the fact the ring leader of McCafferty is a criminal who is basically done anything (blackmail, abuse, animal cruelty, etc) makes the most comforting and relatable music is truly depressing. It just goes to say that the people who act as if they know you the most, they're the ones that destroy you the fastest. Nick Harktop and McCafferty was the biggest thing to the people around him. But he slowly chewed all his band members and others up then spit them out. Then he was able to smile in front of the public and act like everything was ok. It's pains me that this is what went on behind the scenes of a band that probably saved me from su1c1de multiple times and its a personal thing for me to not be able to let go of their music as someone who just discovered their music. I know I'm so late to this but I just felt the need to say it. Also correct me on anything I said that was wrong, my understanding of this can be so bad lol but fuck Nick, praying on his downfall so bad.
