  • They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If that's true then Leo Fender would have been the most flattered person in the guitar world.
    Anyways, this is an unboxing and initial impressions of an electric guitar that Donner sent me to review and keep. It is called the Donner DST-100R.

    Congratulations! Getting free stuff is always cool, but it for sure says that your channel is taken seriously enough by a guitar maker that they invested marketing dollars and said here check out our product. That's cool as hell! Well deserved too. You have a great channel and that's well deserved recognition of what over 25 thousand subscribers also see. Good job!

    From Leo: Glad they sent you that guitar, especially for free. I have a favor. When you do your deep dive, could you measure the neck size against a normal Fender spec neck, and also maybe see if a Fender pickguard looks like it will work. Congratulations on moving up in the CZcams world. Thanks for detailing the fingerboard radius. For pretty much any guitar cheaper than a Squier I expect a 12" radius as on the Harley Bentons but neither reviewers nor retail sites usually supply this. Didn't need something too expensive, this guitar seems to be very good option and perfect to make some tracks on custom music I create for films score and videos that need live feeling, speciallly with guitar that needs the bends and stuff. My first guitar was this Donner strat in sunburst! I have a Squier CV as well now, but I still get a lot of good use out of this. The frets aren't bad at all and the neck is quite flat. I replaced the guts with a $45 red tortoise pickguard with Wilkinson pickups, and slapped a Graphtech nut in there. It has excellent tone now and I keep it in my car for practicing when I'm on lunch during the week.

    The Candy Apple paint job on that is gorgeous. I've had a couple of candy apple red guitars, and they looked quite different. The main reason being that some of them have a silver undercoat and some have a gold undercoat. By the looks of it, that's a gold one, which I prefer the look of. With a nice set up, and perhaps an upgrade or two, that could be a really nice guitar, especially as it's dirt cheap to buy new.

  • @johnwelch557
    @johnwelch557 Před 3 lety

    Electrolysis between frets and strings is the reason for the string wrap. Happens with dissimilar metals in close proximity. We don't want fret divots under the strings on a new guitar, or old one in storage. A few years ago I went to an estate sale.The son showed me his father's '50's tele that was never played except at purchase. It was perfectly brand new. But I saw deep, narrow divots under the plain strings on the first 3 frets! I did some research that gave me the answer..... Electrolytes from the fingers left from that music store demo started the process in the confines of the case! Ahhhh..... Thanks Landon

  • @edwinstovall3334
    @edwinstovall3334 Před 3 lety

    Landon, I am the proud owner of a Glarry S-type guitar that I got shipped to my door for slightly less than $50! I got it on sale (!), and I think that that may have helped me get a better guitar than I might have otherwise. My idea is that Glarry puts guitars on sale when they think they have too many clogging the retail channel. When that's the case, guitars may have had extra time for their woods to dry and season. By the time my Glarry got to me, it had reached the point that the fretboard didn't shrink to cause "fret sprout", and the neck appears stable after a few months of acclimatization time. The Glarry and that Donner make EXCELLENT upgrade platforms, since they have done so much correctly. Even the frets on my Glarry look shiny! I intended to do a fret job, but may settle for a touch-up in the future. I've replaced the cheap (CHEAP!) bridge and string nut so far, and the guitar is now well on its way to being impressive, if it isn't already. This one is a little bit of an experiment for me, because I completed the upgrades on a pawn-shop-prize Peavey Raptor Plus EXP a few months ago, and I want the Glarry to be different. The Peavey REALLY ROCKS, but I put a brass-and-steel bridge in it to help with sustain, and then added brass block saddles to warm the tone (which worked very well) -- with excellent results in terms of sustain and tone, but the bridge weighs the guitar down CONSIDERABLY! I therefore consider this guitar as a "studio" axe and am trying to make the Glarry into a "stage" guitar with a lighter weight. To that end, I bought my first Wilkinson bridge for it -- all steel, no brass. Same graphite Guitar Center string nut for both. Thing sounds so good now that I'm waffling on the idea of swapping out the cheap pickups. I didn't change the Peavey's pickups for the same reason: The guitar wound up sounding so good that I decided that I didn't want "better" tone over the tone that I had right then! I meant, though, what I wrote about making the Glarry different, so I'm still leaning toward new pickups for it.
    While I'm sure everyone would agree that the year 2020 has been REALLY BAD overall, I must say that it is a very good time for buying really cheap guitars. I got started playing in the 1970s, and cheap guitars then were pieces of crap that you had to endure if you wanted to get to any good instruments. The only thing the cheap ones were really good for was separating those who REALLY wanted to play from those who didn't. Those real players would fight with those cheapos until they (we) didn't have to anymore. Now, we have it much better. Cheap guitars are now so good, at least oftentimes, that they don't need immediate upgrading and sometimes don't even cry out for much adjustment to be playable. On the adjustment front, information on how to set up guitars and the tools needed to do so is easily available on the internet, with tons of it right here on CZcams! One can even turn one's guitars into works of expression and art by buying aftermarket parts with which one can change/govern their looks and features. One can make the guitar as individual as anything created by Eddie Van Halen or Les Paul; we all can have our "Frankenstrat" or "Log" guitars which are completely our own and owe little or nothing to anyone else! The sky is the limit, and the real hard part is knowing when to STOP! This is the right problem to have.
    Landon, one other thing: Do you modify guitars? If so, then this is a great opportunity for you. Mod that Donner and share your processes and philosophies with us. What would you change or not change? What would you select to make your changes with? Would you go inexpensive or balls-out? Show what you do and how you do it, and what with. Sound good? I hope so.😎❤️️🎸‼️

    I just got the "antique white" which is more like a pastel yellow, lol. I have my fair share of sub $200 guitars along with expensive brands. Surprisingly, it played very well after doing an initial setup on it. I was even able to get the action down very low even though there are a number of high frets. Unfortunately, the frets are some of the smallest that I've ever seen, so leveling them might not be an option.
    Will end up replacing neck anyways. Overall, with a new set of strings and a setup, it's a great starter guitar for the price.

    I'm gonna give this guitar the Bill and Ted "NOT BAAAAD!" I'd probably try it out, as I've been wanting to check out Monoprice guitars. I'm always a sucker for cheap-ish guitars, and I have been surprised at how much you can get for so little money now... If this is similar on Monoprice, that's good to know. It is definitely a very pretty finish on this one. Thanks for the nice review. Oh, the second to last face you made near the end where you cut your eyes over hard is the BEST click-bait-y face for a thumbnail. I challenge you to do that as many times as possible for a whole day...just because.

    Things are often cheap because they are priced by the extra cost of producing it, once the fixed costs are paid for. So, it might take a few hours of labor to produce it, once the manufacturing is in place.
