  • In this video, I go over the installation and performance of the Banks Power TechniCooler Intercooler and EconoMind tuner. Because the tuner is focused on towing and fuel economy, the action footage will be of my truck with a 10,000 lb trailer behind it.
    The engine and drivetrain of my truck are 100% stock and have over 250,000 miles on them. All of my modifications are engine bolt-ons, so I hope this video shows you just how much power the stock, Allison 1000 can take when you and your tuner respect it.
    Thank you for watching!

      I'm glad you're enjoying the build! Does the Six-Gun change how the truck drives? The EconoMind doesn't seem to affect how responsive the truck is; it just raises the power ceiling radically. I've got a buddy who's wanting to put a Six-Gun on his LBZ, and we're both curious how different it will be from my EconoMind setup.

      The six gun definitely made a difference on the 01 2500 ccsb. My daily service truck is a 02 never tuned 2500 ext cab. Going from one to the other the response and power is night and day difference. But also a loaded service bed 2500 vs a lowered ccsb. 6gun is quick.. curious about economind. Building this 4x4 dually for dirt roads n pulling trailers so hopefully economind will treat it best.

      @@micahblack454 That's so cool that you've got three of these trucks running!
      The EconoMind will give you a bunch of additional power for towing a load, but you can tell that it's not meant for performance, as the truck won't spin the tires or launch off of the line. It very much waits for the truck to get going before it adds in any power. Don't get me wrong, though, it's extremely quick; it's just not a race truck.
      I think you'll be very pleased with the EconoMind on your dually. As I hope this video showed, it handles a load really well!

      @@JayRussellDuramax No problem but a good tuner such as nick over at duramax tuner can absolutely defuel during trans shifts. The reason I'm so set it a custom tune file is simply because all trucks aren't created equal.. that being said with custom tune files we actually data logged while I was working the truck... we were able to get 16 mpg while maintaining egt's between 700 to a 1000... also the turbo braking feature is a life saver on brakes with 130 hp or more of braking power is phenomenal when stopping a load. This is my reasoning... much luck to you and thanks for responding love the content!

      @JayRussellDuramax  Před 2 lety +1

      @@TheBradd88 You're welcome! I always try to reply to my commenters!
      The de-fueling during the shift isn't all that's going on when the Banks tuner is protecting the transmission. Because it has 5 levels of added power, it can pull power back to stock if it detects issues - such as transmission slippage. That's something EFI live can't do, that I know of. The engine makes the power it makes, and the only way for the transmission to say it's too much is to go into limp mode.
      My truck is probably making twice as much power as stock, and I've never had the transmission go into limp mode. I've heard stories all over the place of people limping their stock transmission on ECM tunes making much less power than my truck.
      Basically, the Banks unit is actively data-logging to make sure the truck is safe while it's also maximizing power and fuel economy. Static tuning can't do that.

      These S&S Diesel Motorsport, SAC00 injectors are holding up great, so far! I've been able to make a lot of power with them, too! I'd really recommend the Banks Power tuner that I'm using in this video, rather than using EFI Live. This tuner will protect your transmission and engine in a way that EFI Live won't. My transmission and engine are 100% stock with 253,000 miles on them, and I've had no issues with all of this extra power!

    • @JayRussellDuramax
      @JayRussellDuramax  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey! All of these upgrades were installed for me by Sutherland Chevrolet. From what I understand, the whole front fascia needs to come off, and the radiator needs to be lifted out of its mounts for you to get the intercooler out. The charge pipes are fairly easy to remove with the wheels and inner fender liners removed.
      As far as the tuner, Banks Power says their performance numbers are on a stock truck "with recommended airflow improvements". This tuner used to come in their Power Pack kit that also included the Ram-Air Intake, Monster Exhaust, and the TechniCooler Intercooler. So, if you're wanting this tuner to work its best, I'd get the recommended airflow upgrades to go with it. You won't regret it!
      One thing to note, though: My truck also has upgraded manifolds, up-pipes, down-pipe, turbo, and intake horn. Those go way beyond what this tuner was intended to do, but, as you can see in this video, it still works well with my setup.

      That's awesome, Abraham! What's really neat about the EconoMind is that it maximizes fuel economy in ALL settings. So, the only "setting" you need to worry about is what you're doing with your right foot.
      For a while, I drove it around in Level 1 and only turned up the power if I needed it because I thought that would give me the best mileage. However, I've recently switched to keeping it in Level 6 all the time and just putting extra care into what I'm doing with my right foot. Having all of that power on tap whenever I want it is incredible, and my fuel mileage hasn't dropped! If anything, it's gone up a little bit because I have to drive more carefully since the thing is a rocket ship when I put my foot down and can easily get me into trouble if I'm not careful.
      I'm so glad to hear from others who are buying and enjoying the same parts I've put on my truck! Though I'm no substitute for calling Banks Power, please let me know if you have any questions about your EconoMind, and I'll be glad to help you out!

    Dear Sir. Do you have a parts list for this build? I am overwhelmed with all the options on the Banks site. I have an LB7 pushing 350000 miles and my mileage has dropped severely. I was hoping to increase mileage.
    Thanks for the great video

    • @JayRussellDuramax
      @JayRussellDuramax  Před rokem +1

      Sure! Here's all the Banks Power products I have on my truck: Ram-Air Intake, Monster Exhaust, TechniCooler Intercooler, and EconoMind Tuner.
      If you want to go beyond Banks Power, here's what else I've installed: PPE manifolds, up-pipes, and down-pipe; and a Fleece Performance Cheetah 63 mm turbo and ported intake horn.
      Installing all of the Banks Power products should be a radical change in performance and mileage on your truck. To be safe, though, you may want to check the balance rates on your injectors before doing any of the Banks stuff. They could be going bad and causing your fuel mileage to drop. I have S&S Diesel Motorsport SAC00 injectors in my truck, and they're incredibly good.
      Please let me know if you have any additional questions about my truck and what I've done to it. Thank you for watching and for commenting!

    Have you had any problems with the transmission going into limp mode?

    • @JayRussellDuramax
      @JayRussellDuramax  Před 2 lety

      Not at all, Keith! The EconoMind is set up such that, if the transmission experiences any slippage, the power is immediately reduced to stock. It rarely happens, but, when it does, you can feel the truck nose over as power is reduced. It'll even feed the power back in once the transmission stabilizes! It's seamless! This tuner is incredible, and I'm amazed at how much power the stock drivetrain can handle.
      Some buddies and I did some roll racing, and we all agreed that my truck makes the better part of 500 horsepower to the tires - or about twice the factory output. Many many people will tell you that these transmissions can't handle more than 100 or so horsepower over stock. As I hope you can see by my videos, that's simply not true. These Allison transmissions are incredibly good in stock form; you just need a tuner that makes power in a way that respects the transmission. The EconoMind and Six-Gun tuners from Banks Power are the only ones I know of that do this, and that's why I have one on my truck!

    I have always had EFI Live....think on this LB7 I will go with all Banks!!

    • @JayRussellDuramax
      @JayRussellDuramax  Před 2 lety

      Great! These tuners are MUCH safer than EFI Live because of their active drivetrain protection. That's how I'm able to send so much power through my stock transmission. If you buy the tuner over the phone, please ask for Chuck and tell him that you learned about it from my video. That'll really help me out!

    • @2015_Rubicnn
      @2015_Rubicnn Před rokem

      @@JayRussellDuramax This tuner isn't safer than EFI Live. The only time it would be unsafe is if some clown that doesn't know what they're doing creates a crappy tune. EFI Live platform spanks on any other piggyback or flash tuner.

    • @JayRussellDuramax
      @JayRussellDuramax  Před rokem

      @@2015_Rubicnn Then why does everyone who uses EFI Live talk about hurting these transmissions with much less power than my truck is making?
      I emailed with Duramax Tuner, and, even with all of the upgrades I've done to my truck, their maximum power gains were under 100 horsepower at the tires. The Banks tuner puts out more than that on a truck with far fewer upgrades than mine.

    • @2015_Rubicnn
      @2015_Rubicnn Před rokem

      @@JayRussellDuramax It's not EFI Live tuning that hurts the transmission, it's the amount of power that gets added. The stock 5 speed can't handle much over 100HP extra over its stock rating. The allison is designed to sense slipping between the input and output of the transmission, and when it does, it goes into limp mode to preserve itself from any more damage. I'm pretty sure tuners like Idaho Rob, Duramaxtuner, PPEI know what they're talking about and limit 5 speed truck tunes to 100HP. If you look at the LBZ and up tunes, thet are rated at 120HP+ for stock transmissions. You'd have to see exactly what the Banks tuner is doing to make these claims..I just don't see how this piggyback tuner can supposedly be safer, yet provide more power, makes absolutely no sense. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @JayRussellDuramax
      @JayRussellDuramax  Před rokem

      @@2015_Rubicnn It's because EFI Live is static tuning. When you reprogram the ECM, it runs the engine the same way all the time. The Banks tuner is actively monitoring all of the engine and transmission vitals to ensure there are no issues.
      The myth that the stock Allison can't handle more than 100 horsepower over stock is propagated by EFI Live tuners that add power in a way that doesn't respect the transmission. The Banks tuner monitors for slippage and pulls power if it senses anything that could harm the transmission. EFI Live does NOT do that. If you tune your ECM with EFI Live in a way that causes the transmission to slip, you don't know about it until you limp your transmission.
      These transmissions are very robust and can handle far more power than what these trucks make from the factory - certainly more than 100 horsepower at the tires. If you add power in a way that respects the transmission, you will not hurt it. My transmission has never gone into limp-mode, and my engine is twice as powerful as it was originally.
