  • The "GPD Win" launched as the result of a successful crowd-funding campaign back in 2016. I could never justify the price of it, but today I guess my finger slipped on the "buy it now" button ;) Anyway, I'll be taking a quick look at it today as well as following up on it's modern day performance in another video.
    Specs:
    Intel Atom X7-Z8700
    Intel HD Graphics
    4GB DDR3
    64GB Storage
    Windows 10
    Thanks for watching :)

Addtionally: There are BIOS-version for the GPD-Win which unlock a lot more options. These can be downloaded officially from GPD.
They allow for some RAM-OC and getting the graphics card into a more powerfull mode (well, more of a "keep GPU-boost-for-longer-mode).
But, flashing the BIOS and playing with this stuff can lead to a bricked system only recoverable via reflashing the BIOS. As the System won't turn on this can only be done with a special pice of hardware (altought cheap) and doesn't always seems to work.

Gamecube emulation works surprisingly well with Dolphin Ishiiruka, use DX12 mode which works better with slightly older drivers, can get full speed on a lot of games (Twilight Princess and Wind Waker run great) if you fiddle with the variable clock.

@@heydoeradio7298 Can get it to run at a full speed with no slowdown by dialing the CPU clock back to around 27-30%, not as smooth as original hardware but still very much playable. Seems to get frame rates between 33 and 60 but runs at full speed which for SSX is probably more important than more consistent frames with slowdowns.
For most other GC games I use it at around 60-70% however on this setting SSX 3 has some slowdowns while going from 43-60fps.
Really Dolphin on the Win is all about using that slider (in Config-Advanced) to get games to play at full speed by scaling the CPU, most games don't require it to go that low. Worth mentioning that I set mine up for balanced power as I want better battery life and less heat so YMMV if you want to crank it.

That seems odd that you can’t find any battery of similar size (yes, people questioned my phone with a different random phone battery hot glued to the back, but it worked, and you definitely knew who’s phone was who’s in a day where mass production makes them all look the same, nobody else would claim the one with wires sticking out of it). Surely there is some battery that fits in them, I’ve got lots of different shaped lithium batteries, there are even some batteries you can cut to fit (special battery that was bragging how safe they were, I don’t think cutting to fit was their goal, but kind of cool feature anyways...)

@@jakegarrett8109 Yeah I keep searching through forum posts and whenever you find something that could work, it's either been months or years that it's no longer available, or that it won't ship to Canada. Anyway, just trying to let people know what they might experience with this product. It's still great and I love it but for the price it costs, it's unfortunate. A lot of problems seem to have been addressed with the GPD Win 2 but that version also costs twice as much.

Interesting video. I went a bit mad today and bought an SH Surface Go (Microsoft Surface Go 128GB + black type cover bundle) plus the pen SH for another £40.
I have wanted the Go (well the Pro really but I can’t justify £1K on what is, at the end of the day, a tablet) for a while as the hybrid has really worked for me, using a Huawei M5 with a BT keyboard showed me lugging around an i5 laptop was just silly, I didn’t need the capability and when I did I needed a desktop and a STX A300 based system could manage that (and is sort of portable at 6 by 6 by 4”, you just need power- I have mine fitted to a 7” screen) . Still a lot of money, but it is boxed SH, so very new and I have the keyboard and pen. I did look at these things but they lose out on the productivity (there are some that don’t but they are expensive). Nice to see what I’m (not) missing really.
All the reviews that I’ve seen say they are emulation machines and that makes me think I’d just use a tablet, quite probably my now unneeded Huawei if I can be done- although that isn’t exactly cutting edge it should manage emulation for the older games, at least in hardware. There’s a YT called ETA prime who does a on that sort of stuff.
As it is, I will save my money for the Ryzen upgrade (which also means I will be building a ITX from the old Ryzen stuff, probably sell that on as it is going in a small production run case imported from the USA.
    Great video though, thanks.

ITS DEFINITELY WORTH IT. let alone, the screen is small, and dropping games to 720p, literally make like no difference in the quality really. i love playing my games on this thing when im like at a hotel, on my bed laying down or sitting, at a family members house where its boring or nothing to do, and at hospitals lol oh man this thing is amazing. even like GTA V, i set that to 800x600 for fun, and still looks pretty damn sharp identical to 720, and plays amazing, though getting a REALLY fast SD card is recommended

I highly suggest trying Parsec on it. It's a "remote play" sort of thing where you can use your own gaming pc to host games and whatever else. It supports controller pass-through (the gamepad on the GPD will act like a gamepad on the hosting pc). It's very low latency, excellent quality and DIY-able. Would be the perfect on-the-go experience, with 4G data that is.

Ahh... Model 1. This brings back memories. My suggestions:
-download another Goodix Touchscreen driver. Just in case. The driver, you might eventually find, goes bad. Not sure why though...
-Buy a replacement battery, while you can. Just do it.
-replacing the left and right analog sticks are easy, as they are the Alps analog sticks used on PS Vita. Check AliExpress for those. Removing and replacing are easy, as they are installed via strip clamps on the board. Use a plastic spudger to release the clamp and to press down when the strip is where it belongs.
Enjoy your purchase! I still keep my model 1 around for spare portable computing.

I got my GPD WIN over a year ago. And having had it for that long I can confidently say this system is great fro low spec games withe the occasional gem like Furi or New Vegas running pretty damn well too.My only complaint has to do with how hot the system can get (not painfully so, just uncomfortable at times) and the increasing floppiness of the screen hinge. I don't plan on getting a WIN2 which does address these problems, but if GPD did a re-release of the WIN that addressed these problems for about the same price then I may get that.

An alternative to consider if you already have a gaming PC. Consider the open source Moonlight streaming software. What’s needed:
    1. Gaming PC with NVIDIA GPU
    2. Moonlight App for your phone or raspberry pi.
    3. A controller or controller case for your phone (or use built in touch controls).
    4. OpenVPN setup on your router and phone to connect to your home network securely (for remote play).
This is amazing and all free if you are willing to tinker to get it working. Gaming performance will likely be far better than this device and your settings/saves will stay with your PC.

I have the all metal version of the GPD Win. Though I did replace Windows 10 with a GPD Win optimized Linux Mint 19, and installed Retropie X86 for emulation. I will put in Steam for Linux in the near future, and try out Half Life 2 and see if the performance is better with Linux installed. But other than that I use the system to test monitors, TVs, and USB based parts at thrift stores as well as plugging in a 720p webcam to use as a portable security cam when selling things on Craigslist (hidden camera) in case I get robbed. The only issue I have is the HDMI port. I have to cut the plastic off the top of the plug so it'll fit properly because of the screen's hinge is to close to the plug, and forcing the HDMI cable with the overly thick plastic coating of the plug can damage the port on the system. Other than that it's a nice little system to have.

I owned one of these babies and it was good fun being able to play PC games like Fallout 3 and Skyrim and Half Life 2 on the go, but eventually the charm wore off after I realized that it was quite a hassle to get games going on it. I sold it for an old Sony Aibo and I miss it sometimes, not going to lie.

    I have the second one.
But yea the first is still great for lighter and older games even though it has so many flaws such as bloating batteries and the rather unusual cooling design.
The motherboard is pretty much sandwiched between the battery and the heatsink which was quite a problem with thermals.

I was a backer of it. One of my recommendations is to get a big microSD card and use apps from PortableApps.com. That will give you more apps and they don’t need to be installed on the internal storage to work. Next you can move some apps to the microSD card from the apps settings in Windows 10. This will allow you you to do thinks like move the Netflix app to the microSD and make use of the extra space on the microSD card.

My gpd win is 7 years old and is still perfect. Up to PS1 emulation is great, i use retroarch. Anything more and it works great as a client for cloud gaming and i use parsec to connect to my pc. Battery life is really good when streaming. I use a really cut down win11 and it runs great. It's really surprisingly usable. The Atom x7-8700 benchmarks the same as a first gen i5, but using 4w vs 88w 😂 Nothing like the older generations of Atom. The GPU can really push the temps if under stress and it's good to monitor it and also set an alarm incase you forget to turn the fan up
