So, I Bought an OUYA...

  • All sort of relics can be found at car boot sales and this week I came across an OUYA games console, the result of a popular kickstarter campaign dating back to 2012. Introduced as a £99 or $99 android based system I picked this one up for just £5, and until I got it home I couldn't understand why it was so cheap.
    Thanks for watching :)

I had an Ouya back in the day, and i still have it. It's been years since i played the thing, but i'll definitely hook it up one of these days, just to make sure that it's up to date, before the servers are shut down.
Unlike seemingly everyone else, i loved my Ouya. It was a cheap device, and i think people's expectations were waaay too high. I got my moneys worth out of mine, because of just a few games. Primarily bombsquad. With a few friends, it was one of the most fun party games i've ever played. Essentially, you run around an arena with a character, picking up power ups and bombs, throwing them at each other, trying to blow each other up. It was absolutely hilarious! Hidden in plain sight was also really good fun. It was a big arena filled with NPC's, one player was walking on screen, trying to blend in with all the NPC's, and it was the job of the other players to try and find who was hidden. Also a hilarious game with friends. There were a few others as well, but many many hours were spent, and many great memories were had! :) Really though, all the games i played and really enjoyed, i think was party games, all of them.
My console is the day 1 backer edition. I didn't back it, i never back any crowdfunding campaigns, but one went up for sale for a cheap price, pretty much days after the backers got them, and i grabbed it right away. Long before the actual retail versions became available.
Anyway, i'm hoping that i can grab a bunch of controllers for cheap, when the servers shut down, because the one that came with the backer edition was just awful.
And if the games become unplayable with the servers offline, then i won't feel bad hacking it, and putting a whole bunch of games on it. :)

A Judge in one of the cases actually said that "Emulators provide competition" and went on to say how important that was. Pirating ROMs is illegal, but Emulators are 100% legal. And ripping the data off of your cartridges is 100% legal, too.

the main problem the Ouya had wasn't with the console itself really, the problem was competition. After the kickstarter other established companies decided to make their own versions. Madcatz made one and even the Nvidia Shield was pretty much just a suped up version of the Ouya, which is really shady as Ouya was already buying their Tegra chips from Nvidia. Ouya did attract a lot of indie developers in the beginning, but MIcrosoft and Sony both started their own "indie" divisions to court companies away from the Ouya. It's a fun littel emulation box and really these days it can be bought cheaper than a RaspberryPi and it includes a controller. FYI just about any USB or Bluetooth controller can pair with it as well. I always used PS3 controllers with mine. They also weren't bad for running XBMC / Kodi back in the day, but more current versions can run kind of slow today. I had a lot of fun dragging this over to my friends' houses and just retro gaming the day away. If they had advertised the emulators they would've been given lawsuits by all of the major game companies.

I bought it at 40$ a few years back. The first one I bought wad a brick and I had to exchange it. I really hated the controller but it "did the job". The touch pad was cool. Some of the apps were really good like the weird work out apps. The puzzle games were good too. Clarc, knightmare tower, and Regan Gorbachaev and dubwars were just a few. The ouya really needed ongoing support. I eventually stopped using mine because the CZcams app was abandoned and would only display in the top 45% of the screen. It doesn't even load the app anymore. If they werent going to keep up with it I ought not to as well. I keep it though because the premise was cool. A cheap console with short games to play And each game is required to have a demo, awesome. It was like having a cheap arcade unit in the home. Thing is it was just another fad like those arcade machines of old. It also ran terribly but the idea was there.

I backed the Ouya. I thought it could have been a cool retro gaming machine (see the work of Locomalito and Matt Thorson released first on the Ouya). During the campaign, I asked some other dev friends what they thought. "It's a scam. It'll never come out." they said. After I got my Ouya, I saw them shortly after and asked them again, "Well, no one's making games for the thing. It's dead in the water." So Devs didn't make games for it because 'it was a scam.' Then rejected it after it came out because no one else was making games for it. Fact of the matter is the Ouya did everything the creators said it would do, except succeed.

Makes me think of things like the Commodore CDTV(which was basically an Amiga 500 with the keyboard chopped off, and a CD drive in place of the floppy, it also cost £700, more than twice as much as an A500) and the Phillips CDi.
These things weren't consoles according to the makers, but multimedia machines. Most of the software was like MS Encarta and etc. that they had to know was never gonna shift many machines when you could just buy an A500 and cheap CD drive to do the same job. The games were even worse, just being games you could buy for half the price on A500 on 2 floppies then bloated with CD music, literally none of the games made genuine use of the extra space.
If no one's mentioned it yet, alan keys are much easier if you put the short end into the screw. You can just twirl it around with your index finder.
