The main problem with Ouya was that 99% of the games on it stunk. There were more than a few gems on it, but the vast majority were either lazy phone ports of games nobody really wanted on the big screen, or some hobbyist developers very first game.

The OUYA has so much potential. The OUYA's major issue was a serious lack of direction. The community also didn't help. Some of us really wanted good Android games on the system while many were just happy using it as a glorified emulation box and never saw the ecosystem as a proper platform. Overall a sad situation and unfortunately my OUYA is long dead. I did however had a great time playing The Walking Dead seasons 1&2, The Wolf Amoung Us, Tales from the Borderlands, Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Dreamcast games on the system. Fun times!

I bought a OUYA at GameStop for my birthday I was excited about the idea of mobile games on the TV and the open nature of the platform for me develop games. What I got was wildly different from what was pitched. OUYA advertised Minecraft and other big titles from AAA studios, which I assume they never actually talked to these devs. The console was slow and sluggish and most of the games where shovel ware. As for Wings of change, that better be a Faith of the Heart reference
Also when Switch got hacked due to a bug in the nVidia hardware, the same exploit worked on OUYA. The devs have long since lost their dev keys for it, and switch getting hacked meant OUYA could again be updated

I had my ouya within the year it came out and was surprised by how much fun I had with it. When razer took over I won a forge tv in a Twitter contest and continued to use it along with the games . (Forges big downside was that it never got Netflix support for reasons nobody fully understands) booting up the ouya and playing it was like checking out random musicians on band camp. You'd be shocked at how many games even if they were on mobile were just more enjoyable on TV with a controller. A lot of the games that were on ouya are now on today's modern consoles like the switch

Still have mine, fully functional. Originally purchased with the intent to use it as a cheap Kodi media player so I wasn't as sore as many when the system didn't do well but I did have hopes for it. Most frustrating was the derision from people who seemed certain that all of us owners were expecting to be able to play Skyrim or other similar-level AAA games (never the case, though there was hope that Minecraft would eventually happen). We knew it was and wanted a couch gaming retro console... the games just never came. Some real gems but not enough treasure overall.

I think the Ouya needs "perspective", like at the time the idea of the "average Joe" making games for one of the major games consoles --- then owned by Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony -- was basically impossible. Microsoft had a little bit of an opening via XNA and such platforms, but for the most part, Indie developers hoping to develop their products for mainstream consoles was more or less impossible; lost behind the invisible and impenetrable forcefield of NDAs and such. The IDEA of a completely open console that many people could own and yet an Indie developer could publish on was an amazing concept! Of course, the whole thing is more or less replaced by Steam, where you can kinda "start" there, and if you're good enough, you'll advance to a mainstream console organically. It's just worth noticing that historically speaking, this didn't exist when the Ouya was first released, so the idea of supporting a console like the Ouya made sense AT THE TIME. But yeah, an Android based console was nice on paper, but quickly aged out. And I speak as a sucker who actually invested in the idea and owns an Ouya, hoping to have made my would-be fame on the console that wouldn't be.

It is pretty fascinating that it went from what looked to be a success with such an incredibly successful Kickstarter all to just fall apart. The thing is when I did hear about this console I was not understanding what the hell it was to be honest. Like I didn't even know what it was when I first heard about it. I had actually thought it was a console that was made by Google because from what I can tell it used Android.
But the fact of the matter is other than that I didn't really know anything about it. I saw that I had a lot of games that were already available elsewhere such as Sonic 4 episode 1 which came out years before on the previous generation hardware of we, PS3, and 360, but it also looks like it mostly just had games I can play on my phone and I don't know it just didn't seem like it was really worth my time if I could play so many of the other games I'm finding on there on my phone or even find them on steam.
I had already bought a Wii U the day of launch in fact I was the first person in my hometown of Santa Rosa to buy one in Target, but I digress, anyways the fact is I already spent a pretty good sum of money on the Wii U and on some various games for it that I just didn't see it as worth it to buy an ouya that I just didn't really care about. Especially since I had even considered getting a PS4 back-in-the-day which actually I still never got one, but the thought of it had come to my mind anyways so I just didn't see the point of an Ouya.
I do have to say it does seem like the people behind it we're really passionate in what they were doing and it's still ultimately failed and that must have hurt. Kind of makes me wonder what they really think of the whole thing and the whole failure it was. During some other videos I've seen that talked about the ouya although I do like what you brought to the table in this case by actually showing off the game's a little more and talking about some positive parts about it, but I do recall they showed some footage and some of these other videos where the people behind this console where asked some questions about it and they had to be truthful and openly admit that sure you can get these things on the other more powerful consoles that are already out there. When I saw that I just knew that was not a good sign for them, and I can kind of tell that they felt uncomfortable answering that question because it looked like it made them feel like this wasn't a worthy project despite their passion behind it. When the people behind something had all this enthusiasm and then feel like it's simply just can't compete with what's out there that must be a very sad feeling.

Basically, it was supposed to be a budget console perfect for small indie developers. However, those small indie developers had a much bigger potential market in smart phones/tablets, and also the big boys decided to get into the small indie game.
When the big boys decided to offer favorable developer options for small indie devs, that really killed any incentive for smaller developers to bet the bank on any budget console wannabe.

I loved the ouya, as you mentioned the main problem was the controllsers drifted out of sync and it got worse when using more controllers but it did support any other usb controller so was fine and they offerd a free controller firmware upgrade if u sent them away. They also did the mix and match switch joybon thing before switch, even with teh same colors.
I thin the real reson it faild was internal polotics at mobie dev studios all condeming it before it even launched due to its lower spec , smaller install base, unusual monotisation and being hackable.

There really isn't much value add in the Ouya hardware. Is their software out there still? (open sourced?). I could imagine putting a Raspberry Pi in a cube shaped box, grabbing two readily available controllers (any xbox controller clones), and then adjusting the Ouya software to match. Relaunch the Ouya app store. Make the whole thing an open source thing. It would just need a group to update software and suddenly you have a completely open source software console. Any consumer would merely buy a Pi, add Ouya to the Raspberry Pi Imager, buy any compatible controllers.

I backed the Kickstarter. The hype was huge and having an "indie" console was so refreshing ... at least in theory. It took a while to fulfill the orders and by the time Ouya said everyone had received theirs... mine was still unshipped. The main selling point to me was using the console to make and play indie games on something other than PC. The first time I tried it and within maybe 30 minutes, two of the controller buttons "stuck" in the down position, preventing me from playing or using the main menu in any meaningful way. The delay between controller and console was immense, and the frame rate very spotty on games that should NOT have been demanding. At first I thought my unit was defective but then I looked at the reception online and I was not alone. The hype turned to sour disappointment and I never really used it again.

$100 android game boxes are still a thing, so it really was a trail blaizer. Problem is custom android stores will never really work. People already have a library of apps and games they bought from the play store. They don’t want to rebuy the exact same file that technically will run on that device.
Sony Microsoft and Nintendo are super established and they can survive off their online store, but for a new comer?
I think in this land scape the biggest weird thing for me is that apple couldnt make their Apple TV a casual console work. It has games, the current A12X chip runs rings around the switch. With Apple Arcade and the AppStore there are literally 1000s of games available. It’s also compatible with Xbox and PlayStation controllers.
So if apple failed, can’t see how this company could make it work.

Too early because Indie gaming was just starting to really take off. Indie games (especially retro inspired) are all over the place today, across numerous genres. You can play them on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and often even on XBox and Playstation. Ouya could have been *the* console for these games if they were around long enough.
Honestly, I feel like we're getting close to a time when an Ouya-like idea could storm the market again. High end hardware is cheap and available games are plentiful. Only difference is that the focus seems to be on portable consoles like the Steam deck and innumerable clones.

They were up front about the hardware being fairly weak and not trying to compete with mainstream consoles, but instead providing more of a retro-ish catalog of games with modern amenities. And in that regard it succeeded very well. Sure, you could pretty much do all that on a smartphone, but a dedicated system (console) for gaming is certainly preferable for some people for a variety of reasons. I will say that it is also a fantastic kid's console -- much more 5-year-old-friendly than the Switch.

I remember the hype. I was a disbeliever from day one. I hyped to OpenPandora earlier and that one really failed to deliver. I just didn't see how Ouya would have had any advantage here. Especially since Ouya seemed mostly worse and the team less experienced.

Lady Decade, while I do appreciate your style and charisma, I must admit that I am not a fan of vintage gaming consoles. The reason for this is simple: they simply don't offer the same level of gaming experience as modern systems. They often have limited graphics, sound, and gameplay options, which can make playing games feel more like a chore than a form of entertainment. Additionally, many of these older systems lack the connectivity options that we now take for granted, such as online multiplayer, cloud saves, and cross-platform play. In short, while I may be in awe of your style and strength, I simply cannot get behind vintage gaming consoles. I prefer the immersive and interactive experiences that modern systems offer.
