    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Gang members attempt to kill William 'D-Fens' Foster (Michael Douglas) during a drive-by shooting.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
It's just not William Foster's (Michael Douglas) day. Laid off from his defense job, Foster gets stuck in the middle of the mother of all traffic jams. Desirous of attending his daughter's birthday party at the home of his ex-wife (Barbara Hershey), Foster abandons his car and begins walking, encountering one urban humiliation after another (the Korean shopkeeper who obstinately refuses to give change is the worst of the batch). He also slowly unravels mentally, finally snapping at a fast-food restaurant that refuses to serve him breakfast because it's "too late." Running amok with an arsenal of weapons at the ready, Foster -- also known as "D-FENS" because of his vanity license plate -- rapidly becomes a source of terror to some, a folk hero to others. It's up to reluctant cop Prendergast (Robert Duvall), on the eve of his retirement, to bring D-FENS down.

I always liked the subversive realism of this scene. Drive-by shootings are kind of notorious for injuring bystanders but leaving the intended target unscathed, as was depicted here.

This is the comment that I was looking to get mirrored from my own perceptions from news reports of what actually happens in our neighborhoods, (shooter hitting everything else except the intended person he's so obsessed with taking their life). Although now that gangs have sort of subsided or ebbed a bit, this clownish situation happens less frequently.

What makes this scene so clever is the fact that had he flinched or moved to evade the fire he would've been hit, but due to the fact he is more invested in the phone call he is apathetic toward everything around him. Showing how much he's mentally fallen as for a normal person would've flinched and ran.

When I was in my 20's and 30's and into my 40's I used to work an all nighter once a week (i.e. 7am to 7am, then an 8 hour shift, so ~32 hrs) then come back the next day and work a typical 10 or 12 hour day just to make sure I was working harder then anyone else and would get outstanding performance evaluations. By the time I reached age 59 I was pretty used up both physically and mentally but I had a seven figure portfolio and a pension coming so I stepped away early...I almost cracked a few times but managed to keep my marriage intact and things worked out well (a recently retired Ph.D. Aerospace Engineer who worked for a large American defense contractor's Missile Systems and Aero company.
