CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Nick, the Nazi Surplus Store Owner (Frederic Forrest) gets into an altercation with William 'D-Fens' Foster (Michael Douglas).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
It's just not William Foster's (Michael Douglas) day. Laid off from his defense job, Foster gets stuck in the middle of the mother of all traffic jams. Desirous of attending his daughter's birthday party at the home of his ex-wife (Barbara Hershey), Foster abandons his car and begins walking, encountering one urban humiliation after another (the Korean shopkeeper who obstinately refuses to give change is the worst of the batch). He also slowly unravels mentally, finally snapping at a fast-food restaurant that refuses to serve him breakfast because it's "too late." Running amok with an arsenal of weapons at the ready, Foster -- also known as "D-FENS" because of his vanity license plate -- rapidly becomes a source of terror to some, a folk hero to others. It's up to reluctant cop Prendergast (Robert Duvall), on the eve of his retirement, to bring D-FENS down.

The actor's name is *Frederic Forrest*. He's been in over 80 movies and TV shows and was a popular supporting actor in his day.
It's interesting how the atmosphere of his basement in this scene is strikingly similar to Col. Kurtz's compound, which is macabre and eerie. Also, he's bald and obviously insane.

I'm well past middle age. I know how it feels too.
@@kimcantswim174
Yes something has changed in me as I have aged. I don’t feel like I used to. My body doesn’t do what it used to be able to do.
I would say I am unhappy and unfulfilled most of my time now. I worked for 20 years mostly in Malaysia, Singapore and australia in refineries and most LNG facilities. I retired at 42. I am 49 now. No kids no marriage as I don’t sign contracts that, if broken, I lose lots of what I had. worked so hard for. Cynical huh. I also have arthritis in my hip so im kind of stuck at the moment. Lots of pain actually.
I think something happens to men as we age…. And im not talking about arthritis because I felt this before that. It’s not just women and their menopause. I can tell you that I should have planned what I was going to do when retired but i just didn’t think it through. I would say I am now the unhappiest I have ever been. I was actually “happier” without the financial stability that I had when I was younger. I think I am completely confused with life and what it means…. If anything at all.
Even the anti depresents aren’t that effective in my opinion. I am constantly down and i feel invisible, especially to women. When I was younger I was quite good looking (im not boasting or anything like that) but I was able go out with women quite easily. Now I really do feel invisible. But thus us by the by.
I think im trying to find some kind of meaning to all this. I even tried buying my way out of this…… it doesn’t work. I must be so stupid.
Society has even gotten worse since then. This movie is becoming all the more relevant.
@@anonymoushuman8962 wow
You give and give and give and give and give and give and give! And you expect something in return, you except to live a happy life, because we all do. But you get nothing, nothing to live for, no kids, no love. I feel you. I guess you must feel like the world used you, sucked you dry of all your juices and just abandoned you, like you didn't mean anything at all, like if not you, there would've been another guy, probably with the same outcome as you!
It seems like, and not just in this movie but in real life too, that there are in particular alot of crazy thinking people in southern California and around L.A., like people there think even more erratically in general about things than people elsewhere do. For example, it's more likely to run across someone like Nick in and around southern Cali than in other places, or across a number of the people D-Fens runs across more likely there than other places
in america we have the right to disagree.
that was until the patriot act
+SgtBaker16 oh pls what. you think you're in good hands? nope.
SgtBaker16 Keep thinking, it'll come clear eventually.
+SgtBaker16
Did you know Bush used the Patriot Act to shut down and ban porn sites that he didn't like?
Anything too deviant for the conservatarded mind was persecuted.
Not to mention the CIA concentration camps of course. Heck, one merciless CIA torturer who dedicated his life to sadism against the innocent, even has a memorial in Langley, after he caught a dose of karma in Afghanistan.
If you think the "right to disagree" falls under comments and plans to bring about harm to the public, I suppose. The Patriot act has nothing to do with peoples opinions. As long as you express them in peaceful, lawful ways, you can think whatever the hell you want. It's protected in the constitution, and there's not a damn thing anyone in the government can say about it. They can look at your private conversations, at you disagreeing with them, but they can only intervene in anyway if you are expressing your disagreement in a unlawful, harmful manner, or are planning too. Such as terrorist attacks, school shootings, or other forms of violent disagreement with the government or the general american public. This is common knowledge. The patriot act does not take away your right to free speech. The whole point of the act is to protect the american citizen, America, and through those, your right to free speech.
Elmer of course isn't an American.
The acting in this. Such great work. Even the extras sell the experience.

Wish more people realized this, instead of trying to cancel someone for having a different opinion.
People act like everyone with a controversial opinion has used chemical weapons from WW2 in their basement and an illegal military-grade anti tank weapon that they will just give to anyone as crazy as they are
Everyone who's upset about someone being "canceled for having a different opinion" fundamentally fails to understand the factors. It's always the corporations doing the actual canceling. They made the calculation that it was better to side with the people who are angry about what so-and-so said, than to side with so-and-so. So, you have to ask yourself the following question:
What are you most mad at?
Is it the free market, where corporations do whatever they want for whatever reasons they want?
Or is it the fact that the new majority opinion just doesn't like the stuff you like?
@@JJ-qo7th The biggest concern is the fact that people are so willing to side with and defend corporations when they censor the "right" people.
Social media companies in particular have more direct influence over public opinion than most world governments do, but apparently they can censor whoever they want and there is no issue with that since they are a private company.
We're not talking about a small startup or family-owned local business here. We are talking massive social media companies with millions and millions of viewers world-wide that have the legal freedom to control everything that is said on their platform, and idiots will defend them because they are politically correct for the moment.
Under what other circumstances do these types of people defend the "rights" of corporations? When else are they ok with a lack of regulation that allows big companies to get away with things that are illegal for governments to do on their own?
Yes, the problem is the corporations, no doubt. But the reality is that these companies will continue to be a problem until people actually make an effort to reduce their influence over politics, the law, the economy, etc...
@@Bobthehuntedbobcat Point of fact: I didn't say there was a problem at all, and I'm not interested in choosing between Zuckerberg or Xi right now. I pointed out, very simply, that corporations are choosing to sponsor those who are profitable and cancel sponsorship of those who aren't profitable. I further pointed out that the people complaining about "canceling" or "cancel culture" typically don't see the ironies at play. Either they're mad at the free market doing what they don't want it to do, or they're mad at being the minority opinion.
These are the people who whine about free speech when they get kicked off of someone's online platform, but scream treason when the black football man doesn't stand for the anthem and call for boycotts of a shoe company for hosting him in an advertisement as part of their corporate virtue signal campaign. Yes, virtue signalling is a real thing, but even that is a reflection of the changing virtues of the times.
Also, under a large number of circumstances it's perfectly legal for governments to fire public employees for making...nevermind contentious statements, but literally any political statements while wearing badges of office or uniforms. I was in the Navy; our training included giving, "No comment" as our answer whenever a microphone was pushed into our face while wearing our uniform. What you say while wearing the uniform, or as a host of a show on a network, reflects on those who pay you or continue to associate with you.
And now we come full circle. Corporations are chasing those virtue bucks. The free market is doing what it always does. Conservatives are mad about it, or they're mad at losing their power, or both.
Cancel the cancel culture!

You're completely free to say whatever the hell you want, so long as it doesn't incite violence. The problem is, your freedom does NOT supersede that of others...and if enough people think what you said is egregious, you can suffer consequences of that...like losing a job. That isn't losing your freedom. Either know the Constitution, or STFU referencing it.
The set design and acting in this scene is spectacular!
The great Frederick Forrest. Also played "Chef" in Apocolypse Now, and was the original Captain on 21 Jump Street, and a lot more.

“In America we have the freedom of speech, the right to disagree.”
Oh my, how things have changed.
That.
And BTW I love your profile pic and username
We do still. Who is getting locked up for disagreeing with anyone?
@@OggyisCool "I hate n*****s"

"HOW DARE THEY TAKE AWAY MY FREEDOM OF SPEECH"
Why did you use Ebola in your profile name?
We can disagree up to the point the opposing views become dangerous.
men of cultures have been here

Michael Douglas is a great actor. One of my favorite movies is, The Game. I believe it came out in 97. It has moral to the story.

"HAVE A NICE DAY OFFICER-ESS"
Basically the most badass way of saying "We are not the same"
this scene illustrates how people can go too far on either side of the aisle.
I’m disappointed American pickers never made a episode about this
Fredric Forrest is freaking great! Loved him as Corporal Jay "Chef" Hicks in Apocalypse Now.
He's hilarious in the movie about the attica prison riot.
At first, this surplus could’ve been seen as a WW2 novelty and weapons shop. But once the guy starts talking, it shows the true colors of the surplus.
What ASMR looks like to people who don’t know what it is:
I watched this movie as a confused 20 something year old. Amazing how much truth was buried into this film...
I don't think any of you commenters get it. Because if he met any one of you he'd waste you too. Fed up do you understand? Fed up with the trash.
we need this movie to come out again specially the last 30 seconds of this clip
Anyone ever see the version edited for TV? The whole scene with this guy is especially funny.
"What's this doing in there? FAIRY STUFF!"
he didn't that in the uncensored version he said fa****t sh***
