  • Falling Down is a 1993 crime-drama film directed by Joel Schumacher. The film stars Michael Douglas in the lead role of William Foster (credited as "D-Fens"), a divorcee and unemployed former defense engineer. The film centers on Foster as he goes on a violent rampage across the city of Los Angeles, trying to reach the house of his estranged ex-wife in time for his daughter's birthday party. Along the way, a series of encounters, both trivial and provocative, cause him to react with violence and make sardonic observations on life, poverty, the economy, and commercialism. Robert Duvall co-stars as Martin Prendergast, an aging LAPD Sergeant on the day of his retirement, who faces his own frustrations with socially-accepted spinelessness, even as he tracks down Foster.
    The title of the film, referring to Foster's mental collapse, is taken from the nursery rhyme "London Bridge is Falling Down", which is a recurring motif throughout the film.

      Street navigation, weapons control, tactics, heavy vehicle operation, etc.
      In fact it wouldn't surprise me if in 5-10 years they switch the thousands of dollars steering wheel with a PS6/PS7 or Xbox alpha (just made that up) controller.

This movie and the protagonist are simply showing what a life of stress and persecution can make a person. This poor sap lost his family, his sense of worth, and now his sanity. Is anybody going to honestly say they haven't felt what Douglas portrays? How many people want to do what he portrays because of the mass stupidity and cultural wasteland that seems to be invading America? We are seeing people like him starting to crop up in every city, town, even homes. Such a visionary movie of the sad future that awaits America at the rate it is going, a true "Falling Down". Makes you wonder how many people watch this movie and see themselves in the mirror that way?

    Funny,
    This was made back in the early 1990's. back then the road workers worked directly for the government and everyone was asking the same question DFense was asking here. "What's wrong with the street?" And then everyone was saying,"You're tearing up the street in order to justify your budget." Sooo now all this work has been privatized so the taxpayers wouldn't be burdened with the cost of paying civil service wages to these "lazy" roadworkers doing "useless" work. We have construction contractors(private construction companies) doing the roadwork with lousy designs, shoddy workmanship and 2nd rate building materials. The reason being so they can keep rebuilding the same stretch of road again and again and keep sucking off the taxpayer's tit year after year. They also "bribe" the government inspectors with lucrative jobs for "Team Players" once those inspectors reach their 20th year of government service and are eligible for retirement and a pension.
    And our infrastructure(Roads, bridges, sewers, water) is collapsing around us and the contractors are getting rich..
    Dfense was an ignorant asshole.
    The old way was better. the work they were doing back then was called "PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE.

      Interesting.
      I live in the UK, in London, and don't get disturbed too often by road works, or any work to do with construction.
      Since a city is like a body, if one thing vital "doesn't work" it's a ricochet effect, causing problems in many things. The roads without a doubt are one of, if not the, most important piece to a city, they're like blood vessels in the body.
      When one main vein is ruptured a whole limb can be decommissioned, so when one main road is out of service many vital tax paying places of commerce are affected, meaning the government won't get their money because the road isn't done, meaning the contractors won't get their money.
      Doing it half hearted from shabby materials, I can understand (I'm not saying its right, but I do get their point) the contractors don't want to build a road that will last 1000s of years like Roman roads, where they build it once and that's it, they want to keep the money coming in so they take their time, and just slap together some shit that they know they'll come back to in 5-10 years.
      It's a shame though, in London this city is good, the rest of the UK is questionable.

      @My-Name-Isnt-Important Před 2 lety +4

      Each State has their own Department of Transportation, which handles everything having to do with roads, bridges and highways, especially with designing the roads and highway systems. Small States or States that don't have a lot of funds, typically use private contracting firms, since they can not manage or pay for their own construction workers. Private contracting firms actually save taxpayers money, due to them having deadlines they must meet, and requirements for them to keep their contract. Government workers do not have these same standards, deadlines, and requirements a private company must meet, so their work is sloppily done and not carried out in a timely manner.
      Preventive maintenance has always done, even today, but the Federal Government has not been, due to a whole host of reasons, been funding at the same levels as it once did. Mainly due to government waste and mismanagement. The money for infrastructure has mainly been redirected to pointless endeavors that don't actually help anyone, and are a waste of time. Especially the recent "infrastructure bill" supported by the Biden administration, it actually doesn't help deal with the many infrastructure issues that have cropped up since the mid 90s, and were compounded in the early 2010's.

      Whereas I'm sure that unless the project gets finished, the contractor doesn't get paid.
