I interviewed Jack Betts there (the guy having the heart attack) a few years ago. Nicest guy in the world. His girlfriend of many years had just passed away (Doris Roberts, the mom from "Everybody Loves Raymond") so he had moved out of their house and into a modest condo east of Hollywood. He was extremely outspoken about his early career and had a lot of nice things to say about working in Spaghetti Westerns in the 1970's. He even GAVE me a DVD of a movie he was in called SUGAR COLT, which is the film he was proudest of. Last I heard he was healthy and extremely active on stage even in his 90's.
Wow, that is so great to hear. What an experience that must have been interviewing him. Gentleman like him are becoming more and more scarce as the years go on.

Douglas should have won an Oscar for this portrayal. He nails the character in so many ways. This was so way way way out of the mainstream for any character Douglas had done before. Loved every minute, especially Duvall as the retiring cop. Just fantastic casting.

This scene really shows how Bill Foster goes. He flips from trespassing as reasonable person to shotgun-waving lunatic and from that can actually show some compassion which flips back to mockery. Great scene in a great movie.
When I saw this movie, in '93, I was amazed at just how close we all are to snapping. 30 years later and many have snapped with most on the bitter edge of coming unglued. So much has changed and not for the better. I could completely identify with everything he went through. The word is exasperated.

"Would you get off my golf course?" "I am!" He actually was leaving the course. Obviously the old guy should have heard that, kept his cool, and let D-Fens simply pass. He even refused to listen to his more rational friend. Too many people out there blow their tops too easily for whatever reason. A lot of people would have thought a random guy walking through the golf course was pretty funny even.
I guess he started to rethink how to handle that situation once D-fense pulled out that shotgun. Keep your cool guys, especially on the road, you never know who might be armed and is having a bad day already.

DEFENS realizes there is something vitally wrong with our society, yet feels angry and frustrated at his powerlessness to provide a remedy.
I see a different metaphor. An error of heart can also mean "heartless" . Which would fit into the context of an overly possessive wealthy man seriously endangering another human being just for trespassing.

My interpretation was that this movie represented a fantasy - something that many fed-up people would like to do, but never physically do in real life because of their inhibitions. That was why so many people could relate to this masterpiece.
Holy cow; this was my grandfather walking with me as a boy. They gave us a hard time for walking down a path near the golf course, and he asked all 4 of them to stop him. He mocked them, said something to them quietly, then told them to leave and they did. No cops, ever.

ive been a golfer for 35 yrs and love this scene. there's certainly some assholes that fit the bill of this guy, & although side with MD here, have seen quite a instances of members of the public (that how golfers differetiate non-members) who dont respect anyone's space or right to enjoy themselves (like they want to), even on their own land, so can understan why some get a tad mad. you see fools walking out in the line of the shot, picnics on fairways, portable barbeques, motorbikes, burned out cars, drinking 'clubs', RC vehicles, football games, but the best I saw was a guy just walk out and started training his bird of prey on a fairway in the middle of the day.

Douglas should have won an Oscar for this portrayal. He nails the character in so many ways. This was so way way way out of the mainstream for any character Douglas had done before. Loved every minute, especially Duvall as the retiring cop. Just fantastic casting.

I know the old geezer is having a heart attack, but this is freaking hilarious! Subtle the way the scene builds up and in the end, our "hero" turn the table.
It strikes me for the first time watching this, that these guys are acting exactly the same way as the gang members in the first part of the movie that tried to take his briefcase. Everyone is an asshole guarding his little piece of land.

This scene really shows how Bill Foster goes. He flips from trespassing as reasonable person to shotgun-waving lunatic and from that can actually show some compassion which flips back to mockery. Great scene in a great movie.

When I saw this movie, in '93, I was amazed at just how close we all are to snapping. 30 years later and many have snapped with most on the bitter edge of coming unglued. So much has changed and not for the better. I could completely identify with everything he went through. The word is exasperated.

He actually was leaving the course. Obviously the old guy should have heard that, kept his cool, and let D-Fens simply pass. He even refused to listen to his more rational friend. Too many people out there blow their tops too easily for whatever reason. A lot of people would have thought a random guy walking through the golf course was pretty funny even.
And to think the hot headed one was supposed to be D-fens... the guy was surprisingly calm
I guess he started to rethink how to handle that situation once D-fense pulled out that shotgun. Keep your cool guys, especially on the road, you never know who might be armed and is having a bad day already.
Just leaving him alone wouldn't have cost the old man anything. A little patience would've saved a lot of trouble

DEFENS realizes there is something vitally wrong with our society, yet feels angry and frustrated at his powerlessness to provide a remedy.
You shouldn't really care about things you have no power to change, I think is the lesson.
I see a different metaphor. An error of heart can also mean "heartless" . Which would fit into the context of an overly possessive wealthy man seriously endangering another human being just for trespassing.

Holy cow; this was my grandfather walking with me as a boy. They gave us a hard time for walking down a path near the golf course, and he asked all 4 of them to stop him. He mocked them, said something to them quietly, then told them to leave and they did. No cops, ever.
"I guess your little cart is going to drown." This movie exemplifies class warfare. Great movie! Michael Douglas was the perfect actor to play it. He probably plays golf also.

ive been a golfer for 35 yrs and love this scene. there's certainly some assholes that fit the bill of this guy, & although side with MD here, have seen quite a instances of members of the public (that how golfers differetiate non-members) who dont respect anyone's space or right to enjoy themselves (like they want to), even on their own land, so can understan why some get a tad mad. you see fools walking out in the line of the shot, picnics on fairways, portable barbeques, motorbikes, burned out cars, drinking 'clubs', RC vehicles, football games, but the best I saw was a guy just walk out and started training his bird of prey on a fairway in the middle of the day.

When I saw this as a young child. I thought this was an awesome film laced with dark humor.
