    I like how you prefer using aps-c in this review. i use aps-c and i want to find out if it also turns out great without fullframe. thanks!

    Thank for the review! I have this lens with the Sony a7iii and have had nothing but great results.
    I agree about the price and was able to find a used copy in excellent condition for a good price!
    It is the largest Sony lens I've had and it will take a little getting use too!! It covers a wide zoom range and is capable of producing stunning results for the naysayers out there!

    Thank you, Mathieu. Your straight-forward honest, no-nonsense, no drama reviews are extremely refreshing. Excellent presentation of samples. Actually, I was expecting you to compare this FE 70-300mm to the Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS which in the US costs even more that this one. $1,500 for the 70-200mm. The sharpest aperture on that one is f/5.6. Overpriced for an f/4. And Sony's 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS is $2,500.

      Thanks. I wanted to compare the two lenses but I couldn't find a sample of the 70-200 f4 available, even to rent. However I have used that lens before on the a6000, a6300 and A7r II and I like it: sharp, compact and well built but I agree it would be more attractive at a lower price (the Canon can be find for around $1000).

    Best review of this lens I've come across on CZcams, thank you for that! I'd love to get this for landscapes and really zoom in on smaller compositions in the distance and it looks like this might be perfect.

    Anyone undecided should read Ken Rockwell's review. This lens is much lighter than the other zooms and if you are carrying your camera all day, you may want to consider this lens!

    • @dasaauto2024

      It isn’t cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but not only are 100-400mm lenses with its aperture range more expensive, but it’s a GM branded lens too, so you get hit with two premiums going o that lens from this one.
      However, that said, there are some interesting posts on Fred Miranda of a7RII/III and a7II/III users adapting Sigma’s 100-400mm f/5-6.3. It’s most obvious difference is the 1/3 stop slower max aperture speed across the same range as the Sony GM, which is f/4.5-5.6.
      But, it’s $1,800 cheaper, and based on the results I’ve seen, it’s a surprisingly sharp and quick focusing lens overall-not just “for the money.” Obviously, if you’re interested you’ll do your research, but it’s even significantly cheaper than this 70-300mm Sony G. I don’t shoot much telephoto, but if I did, the Sigma 100-400mm would be on an MC-11 and on my camera first thing.
      To me that’s just further proof of what’s stated in this review here about the inflated price on Sony’s 70-300mm. I also feel the same way about $1,400 for Sony’s 24-105mm f/4. It is good, but $1,400? Again, the Sigma Art 24-105mm f/4 is also really good, and it can be found for $700. 😆

  • @adamabele785

    I own this lens and it does very well on APSC, no corner softness, no vignetting, nice background separation, and you can use it for portraits out of the distance, even macro shots. However fully extended we are talking about 450mm focal length with the crop factor, it also means you have less light compared to a full frame camera. So it gets hard to shoot it handheld. You need to use short exposure, which means high ISO if there is not much light, that means higher noise level. So it is better used on a tripod at long focal length to keep it stable and to be able to use longer exposure. The setup with a small APSC body also gets very front heavy, which makes it harder to balance. I don´t think the price is that much over the top for what it does. Either you need it, then you are going to pay the price or you don´t so the price does not affect you. But I agree it is a waste of money if you don´t use it, but that applies to all kind of gear you have. It does not work with the teleconverter.

    You say, “it’s definitely not a portrait lens”, but isn’t any lens a portrait lens? Just depends on what you want to accomplish. I own this lens and shoot everything from the moon to wildlife to portraits. I don’t always reach for my f1.4 lens for portraits. This is a good lens. I use it on an a6500 and an a7III. Thanks for the review.

  • @GBO76

    Price is the issue, and the problem is there is not so many options : the 70-200 F4 is as expensive, and only goes to 200. The Sony LA-EA4 might be the solution, but it's big, and you have to find the right A lens to mount (the Beercan is the better option IMO). I'm sure Tamron will soon or later make a 70-200 F2.8 with an FE mount.

    I have switched to Sony from Canon. As part of my Canon gear, I used a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS ii lens. I took a hard look at how much I used this lens and the result was - not that often! The reason for this lack of use was the size and weight of that lens. I decided not to purchase either the Sony 100-400 or 200-600mm since I would be in the same position as I was with the Canon glass - leaving it home because it was too large and too heavy. I had decided to just use my Sony 70-200mm f.4 G OSS lens (unfortunately a 1.4x TC will not work on this like one could on my Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS lens) and to rent a 100-400mm or 200-600mm lens if I needed that range.
    And then, Sony introduced the new 70-350mm lens for crop factor lens.
    It gives me 50mm less on the long side than my 100-400mm Canon but, I gain 30mm on the short side...
    It is a half stop less on the long side but, the very decent ISO capability of the Sony cameras can make up for that...
    It weighs only 1.38 pounds (625 grams) which is a half pound or 25% less than the 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lens and it is over $250 less expensive...
    Sure it is designed only to be used with APSC format cameras but, I shoot with a combination of Full Frame and APSC Sony cameras in tandem and I never used the 100-400mm Canon lens on my full frame Canon DSLR cameras - I always used it on my Canon 7D Mark-2...
    The really important thing about the new 70-350mm lens is that combined with my A6400, the camera and lens weighs only 2.2 pounds (about a kilo) while the 7D Mark-2 and the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS ii lens weighs 5.6 Pounds. That is a major difference in weight 3.4 pounds and and there is also a major difference in size. I suspect that I will get a lot more use from the new 70-350mm lens than I ever got from the Canon 100-400 lens...
    The new Sony lens is also $500 less than I received for my used 100-400mm lens...
    Will the 70-350mm lens supplant my 70-200mm f/4 G OSS lens. I don't know about that but, I am going to also take a good look at the upcoming Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 lens as a replacement for the Sony 70-200mm...

  • @IanWilkinson
    @IanWilkinson Před 7 lety +1

    Very helpful review, Mathieu. It was the high price that lead to my decision not to buy this lens in favour of the Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6 A mount lens, plus LA-EA3 adapter. I may have sacrificed a little in terms of AF speed and OSS (even on stabilised bodies) but I think it holds up well optically. However, I still hanker for more reach and understand that Sony may be introducing a 100-400mm E mount zoom soon. Lets hope they don't ask for any more than Canon, which is currently selling their offering for about £1850.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Před 7 lety +1

      I do fear a little about the 100-400mm price. Sony seems to prefer high price first. Their 70-400mm A-mount lens is not really cheap but... fingers crossed!

    How does this compare to the Olympus 40-150mm 2.8 Pro? This is one issue with switching is finding an equal to this lens in terms of consistency, clarity, etc.
    Would you consider this lens in line with the Pro's performance?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Před 7 lety

      +thinkinginpictures THKPIC sharpness is definitely good on the Sony lens but the constant f2.8 of the Oly can be a great advantage. It really depends on what you shoot with it.

    I have an A6500 and will soon buy the A6400 to use as a two camera setup. I have a selection of Sony and Sigma lenses but I am lacking a good long focal length lens for my setup. I do have the 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 but, I don't like the image quality.
    I am seriously considering this 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 OSS lens to nalace ut my Sony kit.

      it really depends on the focal length used. At 300mm, it won't be big. You need 600mm at the very least and perhaps some teleconverters.
