  • The Tamron 70-300 RXD for Sony Alpha cameras like the A7III and A7sIII is a fantastic lens for anyone who wants a great sharp small and lightweight zoom. It's extremely sharp edge to edge and has minimal distortion. While it is a cheap zoom lens it is built very well, weather sealed and captures beautiful images. It has an aperture of 4.5 to 6.3 and while that isn't idea for low light it does perform very well in many other lighting conditions. This might be the ideal lens for people who want to get into wild life photography or anyone who needs a good zoom lens but doesn't want to spend a lot of money.

    Hello Jake. Love the locations you get to explore. I wanted to ask you - would you recommend the Tamron 70-300 or the 70-180 for landscape shots? I’d like to see some compression in my landscape photos, but the fact that the latter Tammy is 20mm shorter than a regular 70-200 is a bit discouraging. That being said, the 70-300 is slowish (plus lack of OSS on the longer end might be a problem)

    • @JakeSloan
      @JakeSloan  Před 3 lety +4

      I LOVE my 70-180 for landscape work and lowlight stuff. The only times I've found I wanted a bit more range is when I've been trying to shoot some wildlife

    • @h-dawg969
      @h-dawg969 Před 2 lety

      @@JakeSloan would you think the 70-180 would be long enough reach if I were to be shooting surfers out back (of course from land?) I just don’t know if it’ll be long enough, but it’s the perfect addition to the 17-28 and 28-75 that I own.
      I’m struggling with this lens at 300mm, or the 180mm, and then get a ‘proper’ long 150-500 at a alater date.
      I’m so indecisive unless I’ve had hands on use. Your reviews always help.

    Hey Jake, really enjoying your content... I saw you last night on TNL and I actually had no idea how for in depth you are with FPV. You mentioned getting started and how you thought you would initially start out by building a 5” quad and just seeing how things go until you realized what such a deep hole you were diving into... I’m pretty much just a GPS drone pilot up until this point, and so my question is, I’d like to get into the cinewhoop aspect of FPV, so, would it be wise of me, or not, to go out and purchase something like the Aerialvation cinestar , the complete turn key kit, DJI goggles, naked go pro, the whole kit and kabootle in one case, or would you recommend starting out by taking baby steps, something like you did?

    • @JakeSloan
      @JakeSloan  Před 3 lety +1

But you already have a smallrig cage for 44$ and can add handles. I bought it with the Tamron 17-28 and microphone Azden smx30 mono/stereo. The gyro data stabilization is fantastic. The package is fantastic. Photos are outstanding and videos are superb. Even for photos the a7c due to more accurate and faster autofocus. The flip screen is fantastic and is mandatory feature to me. It is a baby a7sIII., but better photos resolution. The evf is very clear and very good to my opinion. I have a bad sight and have no issue with it. I recently bought a used mint Sony FE 70-300mm OSS G lens for about 700. The Tamron might be a bit sharper, but I still love the images I get with the Sony on my old a7rii. Plus the OSS really helps at the long end. I would never pay full price for the Sony however. Anyway, thanks for your great review! I did use the Tamron for a few days and did get some really nice sharp images, but had to crank up the shutter speeds quite a bit at the long end. So I spent about 150 more for the used Sony, but for me it was worth it. I'm not shooting wildlife but more outdoor events. If I were shooting wildlife, I think I would want at least a 100-400mm, or preferably even a longer zoom like a 200mm-600mm, but the cost of that Sony lens is about 2,000 dollars.

    Hey Jake, does catalyst browse recognize the Tamron 70-180 and 70-300 for gyro stabilization? If so, I’m definitely getting one or the other. I can’t find info on this anywhere, so your wisdom would be greatly appreciated! I’ll owe you a coffee!

    My only gripe with Tamron is the coating they use on their plastic. A scratch magnet even if only cosmetic... Otherwise very nice lenses :)

    I have seen a comparison between this and Sony's 70-300 G OSS, with the Sony taking a dramatic loss in terms of IQ. :D
    However, at 300mm you would surely prefer to have OSS. But at around 400€, this is indeed a spectacular lens.
    I'll get this to take closer shots of the birds in our garden if they have younglings :D on the 7R III, you can take this up to 450mm in crop mode. That's a lot for that price.

    This whole serie of tamron lenses are overpriced low quality. The previous usd series was overal much better, and cheaper. Since when is a plastic f6.3 lens for € 550 acceptable !!!! But if you sponsor enough reviews, it wil sell. I use a tamron 70-300 USD F4-F5.6 with a LA-EA5 adapter on a A7m2 bought the lens second hand for 150,00 work superb.

    Thanks man. I was torn between this and the Sigma 100-400mm. I think that I going with the Tamron for half the price. Plus the focal length compliments my Sigma 24-70mm. I don't think I will miss the extra 100mm reach on the Sigma.
