By far the best lens review I've watched. It's unfortunate that the accident occured but you were a lifesaver. Tamron should appreciate your work and do the necessary.
That's an amazing story about how a Tamron 28-200mm lens saved the life of an stranded climber. From now on, I'll be carrying a Tamron lens everywhere I go as you never know when you may be in need of a rescue. Thank you Tamron!
LOL well thats not exactly what happened but it was a perfect lens to have with me that day
Wow. This channel is incredible. I found this video searching for 28-200 reviews by working photographers/videographers and just wow. So thrilled to have found your work.
Another great video Jake......Made incredible by the rescue footage. Man those chopper pilots are something else. To hold that chopper steady, 15 feet from the rock face, in that weather.....Amazing.
Thank you very much! Yeah watching those guys work and operate in those conditions was incredible!
Wow, great video Jake! Not only was that good info on the Tamron 28-200 lense, but what incredible footage for shooting the live action drama that unfolded before you! Great job, and glad you were in the right place at the right time!
Thanks Mark H. Me too! It was an incredible thing to witness let alone film!!
First of all that was some amazing content man. Secondly, that lens is sharp as heck! Great review!
thanks a lot, and yeah the lens is incredibly sharp for an all in one zoom heck it would be sharp for any good zoom lens. Cheers
Thanks for the review Jake and for your action. I love the ability to use the crop in on the A7III as well (video at least). A trick I used to use when photographing events years back was running with two cameras; a full frame for wide and med med telephoto lens’s and a crop frame with a 70-200 to get an extra reach as needed.
Also you have steady hands!
You’re welcome and the crop in mode is something I use almost every day. It’s so useful to get just a little bit more reach when needed! Thanks much. Cheers
That's the most practical review I have watched by far 😊, Jake can you please help me which Nd filter you were using on this lense, and if possible tell me few more you have liked.
Great practical review, thank you. I have the 17-28 and 28-75. The 28-200 looks ideal for carrying on holiday, as the sole lens, to the deserts of the western US.
Agreed! If I hadn't just purchased the 70-180 I would have purchased this lens and been quite happy with it. the deserts of the western US sounds like an amazing place to be and photograph! Cheers!!
Very impressive. The photos are really sharp and focusing is fast, I noticed. What a scene and day to remember!
Thanks Eddie! It was crazy and I’m glad it all worked out for good. No one died and yeah the chance to film a real live rescue op was incredible
Nice video. Love the way how you helped them contacting rescue. Also I liked yoir explanation of lens's pros and cons.
You're the man! I hope you're around if I decide to go to Alaska. Thank you for the video. I have the exact same lens and I like it even more now.
Wow this video needs way more views. I live in Colorado and do expect to get rainy mountain shots so this just convinced me I definitely need the 28-200. Thank you!
I think you just sold me on this lens, as well as the 17-28 from your other vlogs. I'm just switching over to mirrorless and I was lost in the world of numerous lenses to start out with (my head has been spinning). Great capture of the rescue sequence!
wow what a crazy story. Talk about being at the right place at the right time for that person! Pretty cool shots. Glade to see you were able to help save the day. That lens also surprises me.
It’s impressive. I think if I hadn’t already grabbed the 70-180 I’d probably be pretty happy with this one!
“Macro...for the win!” LOL! Great video! Seriously looking into Tamron right now. 👍
Rofl. I’ve been waiting for someone to comment on that. It feels so random 😜.
The price...for the win. Great review. You really lean into it. 😉 And then....those helicopter shots FOR THE WIN! Very cool. Good that you were there and could help.
The national guard is awesome! I have a feeling this will be a popular lens review video.
Also, did you figure out what each viewer wanted to know, and put that info at the end?
Heck of a setup just to review a lens, Jake :D :D Well done for capturing the action as it unfolded, glad to read she was expected to recover.
God bless you for helping the woman falling SOS .
Thanks for filming excellent video.
Great review and real world test my dude! Decided to snag one from your aff. link from this and your recommendation on X a few weeks ago. Nice Christmas deals going on! Looking forward to trying it out once it arrives!
Looks like a pretty cracking lens. I've tried their 20mm lens and was razor sharp so believe how sharp it is. I'm all for all in one lenses so just need a FF body to appreciate something like this.
Cool location for filming and photos
Thank you for these videos! I have been through hours of your content, getting back into photography and doing research. I've tried to find this in your videos but do you have any tips for keeping the sony/tamron camera body and lenses clean after being out in salt weather environments? Thanks
Only 35k views?? Wow, incredible video! Real life rescue. Shows the dedication of our National Guard. Thanks for the review and incredible rescue video.😉
Wow thank you so much and I agree those people are incredible and save a lot of lives up here every year!
Thank you Sir! It was like watching Cliffhanger and lens review in one! What filter are you using on that lens if I may ask?
I usually use a variable ND filter from freewell. Sometimes I use a polar pro variable nd as well.
WOW !!! Only in Alaska. I've been to Alaska twice the last time We visited Denali National Park. Quite awesome. Enjoy yourself
Thanks its an awesome place to live and work! I'm glad you enjoyed your time here
You're lucky to have Alaska, take good care of it. Norway is now utterly destroyed by wind power plants all over. Google, Fb, German capital and so on, really every vista is destroyed, and with Hurtigruten Cruise-ship you can now only travel 16 minutes along the Norwegian coast without seeing wind turbines, and it's to become worse, much worse!
That is a great review! Just got the 17-28mm and 28-75mm f/2.8 last week and now for sure I will be returning the 28-75mm f/2.8 (still debating on sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 that is wider and reviews shows a bit tighter at 28mm) but still debating to purchase this lens only or have this one as a daily/outdoor event lens with flash/strobes and add 35-150mm f/2-f/2.8 for newborn/family/wedding/lowlight event photography. Would you say the sharpness are at the same level regardless of the f/ stop differences when compared with 28-75mm or 35-150mm?
Thanks. I did a review on the new 16-35 f4 here: czcams.com/video/A7UrAkytxpo/video.html I haven’t messed with the sigma yet but I would like to
What a crazy story, and you didn’t even clickbait title the video 😅 awesome review
Hey Jake. Is the choice between this and the 70-180 a no-brainer if you dont need the apertue of 2,8 the whole length?
Great video btw.
Thanks! If you don’t need the 2.8 all the way through then yes I would just go for this lens.
I just bought this lens and looked at dozens of reviews before deciding. Honestly, this one is the best and turns into an action movie at one point ;) With a decent narration from your perspective :D Keep reviewing camera gear, but maybe with less exciting twists. For the sake of others ;)
Did you need to set the ISO to auto to compensate for the Aperture change when zooming?
Sold! But I also need to know what mic you’re using ?
I use the Deity D3 Pro for almost everything! you can see my review of it here: czcams.com/video/Jf_fXBjaIUw/video.html
Which lens would you recommend me between the 28-75 or 28-200 for sony a7iii? I was about to buy the 28-75 but I found this one. Thanks
I’d go with this personally. Gives you a ton of flexibility in one lens and if you add the 17-28 then you’re basically set with two lenses.
unfortunate for that gal, but lucky for you to catch that on film. And really lucky for them that you were there.
I was about to tell you it wasn't a guy, but you beat me to it and edited your comment. 👍
How did you find this lens with the zoom on and filming? I need a zoom lens for more wedding videography woulf you recomemd this or something different
for wedding stuff I would go with the 70-180 since it will perform better in lowlight
Your links to BandHphoto are not working on several videos. thanks for the great work.
Hello sir.Can you tell me if the zoom ring ia a little bit stiff? Because i just bought it and it is hard to rotate the zoom ring.thank you.
What a story! Thank you. May I ask if you need "tell" your Sony A7RII what the focal length have your Tamron? I mean becouse this is not the lens from Sony. Do you need to make some adjustment on steady shot focal length?
Tamron lenses communicate with the camera body just like a native lens so all focal length data is automatically adjusted for in the camera.
@@JakeSloan thank you so much for your replay, greetings from Greece, elwira
I've decided to try the 70-180 f2.8 for sony. To see if it can replace both 28-105 and 24-240mm. Lightning the load
I know this is a old video. But I am going to Alaska in July and I am now super happy with my choice of this lens!
What an adventure! Thankful you were there to lend a hand. Thanks also for the review, I think this lens may seal the deal on the MILC eco-system I'm buying into (Sold all my Nikon DSLR kit 2 years ago). Loaded question, but how would you pit the Sony 24-105 4.0 against this lens? Great content, Sub'd!
This lens will give you a lot more zoom in the telephoto lens and on sharpness they will be pretty close but I think this will win out overall. If you plan to do a lot of handheld shooting then the Sony will do better since it has OSS built in. Either one will serve you very well for a single lens. Tamron is also coming out with a 70-300 that would pair well with the sony if you decided to go that route but then get a more telephoto lens later. Cheers!
@@JakeSloan Thanks Jake, good advice. I rented the A7III last year with the 4.0 and really enjoyed it, but with 6 kids the reach of the 200 would be useful. I plan on getting an R version so cropping in vs. having the 24 to begin with I think will work till my budget lets me get my dream "Trinity". Thanks again.
You’re welcome! And yes this is a fantastic option for an all in one lens with lots of reach!
@@JakeSloan guess ill sell both 28-75 and 24-105 and get this one and 24 GM... for video i need gimbal unless just pan left and right...
I originally bought the kit lens with my (new to me) used. Within a day, I took it back and bougt the Tamron 28 - 200.
When Jake zoomed in on the helicopter, it looked gigantic. There was some pulsing zoomed in that far but it was still a great image of a huge, throbbing black hawk.
Do you think the upcoming Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD lens will have OS? I too LOVE my Tammy 28-75 mm, except for the flippy lens hood. Is that better on the 28-180 mm?
I don't think it will even though I wish and hope it does. The lens hood on the 28-200 is the same as the rest of the Tamron lenses soooo... I am glad Tamron is releasing good affordable options for Sony shooters though!
@@JakeSloan I'm not interested if no stabilization. For my 28-75 I dropped the lens hood and bought best quality B+W anti-reflex UV-filter, and think it render colors and contrast even better with the filter on. I even love the vignette of the Tammy, I tried to replace it with vignette in C1, but always end up liking the vignette from my Tammy more. It is my walk around lens, and only bring other lenses if I have some special plan or ideas.
I am wondering what Nd filter did you use
I usually use an ND Filter from Freewell filters. Sometimes I use the Polar Pro variable Nd.
Jake, I might have missed something but did you film this with the 28-200 or the 28-75? Sorry if somebody already asked this.
Most of this was filmed with the 28-200. There are a few places where I filmed with the 17-28 and those are only because I wanted to show the actual 28-200 lens
@@JakeSloan Thanks, I'm glad I discovered your channel. I'm jumping back into photography and beginning to do Video. I'm an avid adventure Motorcyclist and outdoor adventurer whom is building a kit to travel and shoot with. As weight and volume are important I'm trying to keep a minimalist set up. I'm looking at Sony A7C , Tamron 17-28, 28-200. Hero9 and a drone most likely the Skydio 2 for it's autonomous follow capabilities. FYI I' the Xtratuf Sales rep for Western Canada so I love Alaska!
Thank you very much for your sharing! Now is in 2023, do you still recommend Tamron 28-200 for traveling? Or, do you have any other recommendations? Thank you in advance!
I do in fact I just launched a video today with all the tamron lenses compared in 2023!
Would you recommend this lens over the 24-105mm f4? I've been comtemplating whether to get this lens or 24-105mm f4 sony. I love the focal length this 28-200 covers, just not sure how stable it is handheld, since I mainly do more video.
I did a review of the 24-105 f4 and if you have the budget and you don't need the extra reach its a better all in one run and gun lens
@@JakeSloan Thanks for the quick response, let me change the question, if you're going on a road trip and you have both of these lense, but can only take one, which would you pick?
This review is the reason I'm buying this lens. It will be the first Tamron lens i've ever owned.
how you buy this 28-200 instead of the 70-180 if I already have the 28-70?
You certainly could. I would still lean to the 70-180 if you need to film/photograph in lower light.
Hey Jake, Can you arrange one of them rescue deals when I come up and visit you next summer? 😉
Um maybe??? Depends on how daring you want to be lol. Jk hopefully that’s the only one I film for a while!
@@JakeSloan, I'll be daring but I'll also bring some good karma so hopefully no major rescues!!
I have Sony a6400 ..Which lens you suggest for great videography and also photography Tamron 28-200 or Tamron 70-300 ? Please suggest ..
for the A6400 I highly recommend the Tamron 17-70, you can see my video about it here: czcams.com/video/ZGP2SWKJ85w/video.html
@@JakeSloan Thank you so much .. I watched your Tamron 17-70 mm Lens review video ... This lens is fantastic but I want more zoom ... If you have one choice from the two ..Tamron 28-200 or Tamron 70-300 then which lens you will be suggest?
Incredible people work in the rescue team. I literally have bitten my nails while looking at what was going on.
My Tamron 28-200 on Sony AIII is a bit slow to focus in using flex spot as center spot. Not fast like my Canon 77D with Sigma 18-300 with center spot.
I own one of these and use on Sony A6400. It works like a 300m on cropped sensor, and I love it. Btw. This is the most adventure-filled photo/lens video ever. lol. :)
Hi, I'm an adventure motorcycle rider. I have gone around the world. My last trip - last year was from Miami to Thailand -- only crossing water from Canada to London, UK - 30,000km. I dumped my Sony lenses and mostly relied on my 28-75 2.8. I have little room - and can only carry small weight. So to my question: I want to bring 3 Tamron lenses on my next trip - Miami to South Africa on motorcycle - 40,000km. I must have the 17-28 for landscape. What other 2 lenses to bring of the 3 available? 28-75, 70-180 or 28-200? I do care about quality of image a lot and I do shoot lots of portraits -- I generally go to places off-the grid so I wont be returning... Thought?
I would take the 17-28, 28-75 and 70-180 if you can. However if you want to save some space and weight then take the 17-28 and 28-200. It's a great combo! the 28-200 doesn't perform quite as well in low light at the long end due to the f5.6 aperture but it's an excellent lens in every other way. Cheers!
@@JakeSloan Thanks Dude. Thats the combo. Done. ... And I was dead serious... I love the Tamron concept of lightweight - no frill lenses. I took a ton of Sony lens gear to Nepal and Everest Trek last year also -- and it was the last straw... I'm too lazy to carry that heavy crap for incremental gain. Check out my stuff at: www.phillipadeleon.com/Gallery-Page/ . Cheers.
would this lens be good for nature and wildlife images.(birds and stars)
never expected to see the exact helicopter ive worked on for years in a lens review 😂
Well this was not what I was expecting when I clicked on a lens review lol. You gonna film a hurricane next week with a 35-150?
LOL not quite I did review the 35-150 but I only filmed a lunar eclipse with it
Would I need the 28-75 or will I be covered with the 17-28 and 28-200?
The G2 28-75 is quite a bit better optically, certainly at the wide end. It's basically perfectly sharp wide open from corner to corner. But you have to ask yourself if the 28-200 would be good enough, which it certainly is.
I have Sony 24-105mm f4.
Thinking about to replace, but not sure I can.
@@JakeSloan it perform very well, but sometimes I need more than 105mm.
28-200mm versatile focal range
Would you rather have this in your bag or the 24-105 assuming you have a 100-400 in your bag?
I’ve been going back and forth on these to replace my sigma art 24-70.
Cheers
I would probably spring for the 24-105 to pair with the 100-400, which is exactly what I have actually lol
@@JakeSloan what makes you choose the 24-105 over the 28-200? I’m going to buy used for either but what sets the 24-105 over the edge? Cheers!
I think either will be great but I do find the OSS is very helpful for a lot of my stuff
The real question for me is now should this replace my 28-75? It’s basically reach vs f/2.8! I gotta think hard about this.
Glad she is expected to be fine!
I'm struggling with the same question. Very happy with my 28-75, but maybe the reach of the 28-200 is preferable when being out in the landscape?
Yeah I've had the same thought about selling my 28-75 for something like this. I find I use it still in interview sessions etc but I think this would work for that as well. If you find yourself needing more zoom range then I would say yes unless you have the funds for the 70-180 and want the better low light that lens provides
It is really nice to have the extra reach when out and about. Not having to worry about switching lenses when time is of the essence is really nice
Well this is the most interesting lens review I've ever seen, well done
Thank you very much! Mostly a case of being in the right place and the right time with the right equipment
