A national treasure. If anything he’s underrated.
In the sense most people can't even appreciate all the stuff he does. But those in the know consider him to at the very highest level, so he's properly rated by them.
Absolutely
Definitely.
agreed.
Here we go again with the underrating. He’s brilliant and everyone knows it
Saw him in a small club in East Lansing, MI some 45 years ago. Great evening. Thinking he was touring to support Breezin’.
George is an alien. I bought Breezin when it came out, and then got an old album called Into the Blues, and life was never the same.
His 1967 album ''the shape of things to come'' is a gem. No singing , just jazz.
Another jaw-dropping, dazzling lecture by Fil at the Wings of Pegasus International Conservatory of Music. Wow. Thanks for "taking us inside" another absolute Great.
Thanks!
I guess Im randomly asking but does someone know a tool to get back into an Instagram account?
I stupidly forgot the login password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me
@Kingsley Langston instablaster =)
@Steven Callen i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im in the hacking process now.
Takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Steven Callen it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my account!
During the late 50s 60s my dad regularly took me to Ronnie Scotts at first in Gerrard street and then Frith street, we saw most of the essential and hip guitar players like George Benson, Wes Montgomery, Ernest Rangin, Dave Goldberg and many more. As a young boy, and dad's negotiating skills, we were usually allowed at the front. George apologised for singing a couple of songs and hoped the audience didn't mind; they didn't, and he brought the house down, such a lovely man and even shook my hand as did, Wes. These were first time UK performances from most of the players I saw.
Great breakdown of a great artist. GB is so smooth.
Fantastic, Fil! I actually said, "Omigod!" outloud when I got the notification. Benson is a stunning artist. This Masquerade is such a hauntingly beautiful song. I wished you had covered it but On Broadway is a gem too so I'm a happy camper tonight ☺
Got to see him concert when I was a student in Denver I'm the early '80's. What a damn good show.
Went to one of his concerts and debated the meet and greet package. ... so freaking glad I did cause he played Affirmation in the rehearsal only....phew! I would have kicked myself forever. Man ... what an artist
George was great. Examples of his early classics was a great take on The Beatles "Here Comes the Sun" and The Dave Brubeck Quartet's classic "Take Five"
I like you getting out a guitar and showing us what you are talking about. That adds a lot to your evaluation!
I have always loved George Benson.😎
Wwwwoooooowwwww!!!!!!!! THE TEACHER🎤🎤🎸🎸🎸💤..All Perfect no more words..❤❤❤🌷🌷🌷🌟🌟🌟🔷🔷🔷👌👌👌...Thanks for this analisys and your comments fantastic..congratulations⚘⚘⚘
Still got my Breezin' album and still love it! Fav of mine on it is This Masquerade. Thanks Fil! Peace!
I actually met George Benson one day in Edinburgh he was just walking along quite the thing I looked and I said hang on a min that’s George Benson had a nice chat with him spoke to him about his music and said I really liked his guitar work I think he was surprised as I think most would be speaking about his big hit songs .. he was a very cool dude indeed .. a nice man
He's scats right up there with Mel Torme and Ella Fitzgerald
No, that would be Al Jarreau. See Al Jarreau,Take Five, live 1976.
I love Mel Torme and Sammy Davis jr. To I think both of them particularly mail or way better than Frank Sinatra in the rest of the Rat Pack although he Martin's interesting on his own level. But George Benson he's just amazing. And Ella I never asked anything from Ella except just to sit there and listen to her I mean I want to sing along with some of the other singers out there but I never sing along with Ella I just want her to sort of fill me with her Musical gift from God. We're so lucky to be alive when we can still listen to these types of musicians and I love this wings of Pegasus guy for giving us these little lessons.
@@nebbindog6126 what do you mean no?
Ella and Mel were horn scatters.
Really Andrew you're not smelling what I'm steppin in.
Absolute class Fil! I saw George play many years ago here in Australia and I was stunned on just how amazing he is live! Brilliant voice backed up by his incredible guitar playing! He is the real deal! Thanks Fil! Cheers Mario! 😀👌🤘
Thanks Mario!
George Benson...a class act. He was fun and smooth altogether. Maybe if I had a music instructor as skilled as you, I might have learned how to play.
Love George Benson. It must have been great to see him in concert. Maybe he’ll come to Australia again😊🎄
I always loved his jazz style.. Using his guitar to replicate his vocalizations.. He certainly can play dis guitar..
You were smiling .. What a treat...
Thanks professor
Saw George in 1978. best ever
I grow up in Pittsburgh so I've seen George many times, excellent.
Thanks for the George Benson analysis. I remember see in ng him live in Stratford, CT at The American Shakespeare Theatre in the seventies. It was a wonderful performance!
Benson's a special performer had the guts to do something like this and make it work.
This gentleman's music has made the world a far better place. ❤
His album "Breezin' " was an eye-opener for me. I was 28, and had never heard anything like it (thank you, top-40 radio). The idea that he was discouraged from singing is incredible to me, but that was probably the music business back then. I truly appreciate George's influence on my music appreciation.
"Breezin' " is amazing.
Always tapping away to your videos. I enjoy the variety.
I've been to heaven. I saw GB and his band perform with the Minnesota Orchestra in the 80's.
Been to a couple of his concerts. ELECTRIFYING!
Fil, your egalitarian take on the breadth of musical genres is breathtaking--your sharing of techniques is much appreciated. Thanks!
Am sure it would not hurt to do another one of George Benson’s songs
What an amazing singer, I love listening to him😊
Oh my George!! Soooo smooth and stylish... Fil your analysis was excellent and I really appreciate your "tutorials" in which you share your knowledge so generously. You're an excellent teacher!
Thanks!
WOW!!! George Benson. Outstanding. What a jammin' band. I could listen to them all day. This site is always good. When the teacher is good, all is good.
Excellent teaching for George Benson a true guitar legend. I have taught guitar myself but I wouldn't know where to start to teach his amazing technique. I really appreciate your approach to explaining what the legends do that make them the legends that they are. Thanks again Fil for all your hard work.
Always loved his version of this song. We were amazed at his scatting/lead playing back in the day...no one we knew had ever done that, especially live!🧡
Saw him do a twelve minute version of this at the North Sea Jazz festival in the early 2000's . Crowd went wild.
Loved listening to him on records in the late 60's at Washington State University. Thank you so much for bringing him to more people's awareness.
So awesome. Great stuff Fil, as always.
Thank you Brotherrrrr..
When you pull out the pic stick...
Your brilliant... Your analysis is spot on ... Rock 🎸
Ole thunder fingers uses every note ..
Wow is he good... A treasure.
Thanks!
Another great video. Love George Benson. Thanks!
One of my guitar heroes for sure! Thanks for this analysis Fil. I use to listen to the “Breezin’” album often after it came out. I saw George live back in the 80s and he was just terrific. Really inspired by his seamless guitar playing and mastery of the fretboard. Amazing to watch and listen to. 👍
Thanks for this great musical analysis of George Benson's performance of "On Broadway." Your guitar and vocal demonstration of his performance was stellar--you provided clear musical examples in detail. Fil, I truly appreciate your analysis videos. From one musician to another, I thank you!
I met and saw George
... He's a super talent
Good morning Fil from Austin TX. 5:30 am. What a way to start a day! Great analysis as always! Masquarade is one of my favorite covers that George did. Have a great day ! Be safe careful and healthy!
Born in March 1943, he’s now 78 yrs old. Sure miss hearing him like in prior years. He was one of my mother’s favorite vocalists (God rest her soul.) Through her, I was introduced to Mr Benson. His voice is gold.
Love Georgie Benson!
Thanks Fil!
I loved your analysis and breakdown!
I saw George live in Johannesburg a few years back and drove 600Km to get there. He was spectacular. It featured his hits, but boy, his band kicked ass big time. I'd say it was the most accomplished band I've seen and heard. The keyboardist was doing things I've never heard of, and I've played with some great pianists. There was a lady on percussion, first-rate, of course, who also did a turn on vocals. I'm pretty knowledgeable of harmony, but I can't fathom his chord soloing. Excellent video btw.
I’m loving this channel! So much good stuff out there I never bothered to give a listen. Shame on me. Love this guys voice!
Best concert I ever attended--hands down--was George Benson. I tell you true--he sounds as good or even better live than recorded. Jaw-droppingly great for 90 minutes straight. I'll never forget his artistry, his class, and his charm. Absolutely unforgettable. True greatness.
Thanks for this Fil, love when you use your guitar to get your point across. I must confess my first recall of this song is as background sound in a "Radio Free Europe" spot on tv in the sixties, impressed me at the time ( guess I was maybe 10 at the time).
Nice words for a very talented player and performer and a fantastic song to boot.
Rock!
:-)
really cool to see GB and you with guitar in hand, dig your backing tips. great vid.
Thanks!
Great analasis and demo and great legend in George Benson! Love ur videos Fil
Went to Disneyland in the 70s GB was there had no idea he was playing that night ! Man what a show !! His playing is the Tops !!
Another player who could scat sing in unison with his guitar was the great Rory Gallagher.
Thank you for mentioning Rory!
Yeah, having personally watched George warm up from about two feet away..I can vouch for him KNOWING his guitar sound. It's literally an extension of his hands.
And he's been playing since the early 50s.
I could argue that George might not be the greatest known guitarist , but considering how many recording sessions he's done and who he's recorded with, he might be the best.
And no Hendrix couldn't play Jazz.
Saw him live in '85. Still have the review of the concert by John Peel, who wrote a review in one of the national broadsheets. Not John Peel's natural area of musical interest. Even he had to admit that he left the concert "if not a convert, mightily impressed!"
That night I saw George Benson at the NEC Birmingham he was truly and legendarily superb.
Love this song, the highs and lows of trying to be a professional performer. Aaaahhhh, the BIG DREAM! Vocal/ guitar harmonies are not that unusual, but when that harmony is done by one person... LIVE...? Benson's a master! Thank you, Fil. Peace and love, brother, hope all's well for you, during this lockdown nonsense. See ya Tuesday!
I've only ever known George Benson as a pop singer back in the day. I had no idea he's a master jazz guitarist, so it's been like finding a new favourite genre and artist for me. I've been blown away by his talent but feel a bit like I've underestimated him all these years which is a shame. Thanks for your analysis Fil.
Benson is amazing...a living legend
6:35 George is not just vocalising to his guitar but rather playing guitar to his vocals, the melody ,runs and trills don't come from his guitar but himself, he wouldn't need a guitar in order to improvise over the song. Ultimately, his guitar and vocal improvisations are to all intents and purposes ,simultaneous !
I was lucky enough to see him in concert back sometime in the 90’’s. A terrific show. The scat singing here - way over the top.
Such a great performer and musician!! He could put a cool groove on the phone book!✌🏻
George Benson is amazingly good. Period.
I went to a George Benson concert way back in 1990, he put on a great show, absolutely amazing performance on guitar. I still have the ticket stub from that night! Watching this brings back good memories.
I never saw him live but loved the way he could play different styles of music , jazz blues and you guitar demo is great as always!!
Thanks!
I remember this song from the 70's. He does it quite different here. Nice licks on the guitar Fil.
phantomrockerr Studio versions are usually different than live so it’s more widely accepted by audiences and easier to sell!
Smooth great voice.
Great work, Wings.
Thank you for this. All that Jazz is a a incredible movie that has become a favorite.
My cousin took me with her and her boyfriend to see George Benson when I was 14. Because I didn’t think he was really my style, I reluctantly went with them. Oh.My.G-d! I fell in love with the man and his music! Thank you Fil for the great analysis and the great memory!
Great video. Love George Benson. “Bad Benson” is one of my top 10 favorite guitar albums. Unbelievable talent.
Wow. You explained and broke that down excellently. What a performance. He's awesome.👍
I as at a Chet Atkins concert years ago and he talked about playing with George. He said that George never plays the same song the same way:-)
He also said that he has never seen hands like Geoge's.
I saw a class submitted by Herb Ellis, and like Oscar Peterson he advised learning to play what you sing while learning to improvise. I think there are many people who learned improvisation in this manner.
great analysis, very thorough.
While his music may be jazzy and blues inspired it’s very contemporary. You heard his songs a lot on the radio in the 70’ s and 80’s. Learned a lot of new info on George. Great playing🤟Thanks🤟
That crowd was in complete awe of George; they barely reacted to his solo because their jaws were on the floor. You're the first person who explained how to play guitar in a way I can understand. Thanks and cheers!
Great one Fil. Love Mr.Benson. I second the request for "Take Five".
Great song. Great singer. Great analysis and I just love your guitar demos.
Adding your guitar playing and explanation was a real nice touch. Benson is one of the most talented musician singers in the business. If you've never seen his Nat Cole impersonation it's a must watch.
Love George Benson! I've always wondered how a guitarist can sing what he's playing, as I've seen John Mayer do this many times. The way you explained it makes perfect sense. Thanks, Fil!
I played George Bensoon's 20/20 album so much, I wore it out. So good. He's had such a tragic family life, it's amazing he can perform at all, let alone so well.
Sorry.. but I just love your smile when bro George nails it. 😄😁😃😀🎸🎸🎸
Great insight; getting to learn what makes George Benson such a good musician after listening for so long. Many good songs and played with other great ones such as Joe Sample, Earl Kloug, Carlos Santana...
* Earl Klugh (sorry)
His "Masquerade" was an amazing rendition.
I have always liked this old classic song together with Autumn leaves and the Work song from way back in the days. I feel that George Benson'
s take on this song have elevated it to new hights. Many thanks for another interesting analyse!
George Benson is great! I saw him in concert at Red Rocks in Colorado back in 1980. What a fantastic performance it was!
Good analysis as usual, Fil. Back in 1976, "Breezin'" was my first exposure to George's smooth playing style.
Aha, that smooth soulful, jazzy voice of George Benson, all thru the 70's he was on my radio, and my cassette player... Just a fabulous, fabulous singer , guitar player, jazz fusion started in the early 70's and took off thru the 80's and 90's, and that's the direction Jimi Hendrix was moving in... Filip, i'm starting to think the reason i listen and look @ most of your videos, is those Demos , so educational and interesting, and fun.... Oh, and because you are so niceeeeeee to look @, candy for my eyes! Muah, You Rock, Dude! Great analysis!
Thanks!
@@wingsofpegasus You're Welcome, darlin'
I saw George in the mid 70s. His rhythm guitar was Phil Upchurch. An evening of good listening.
Phil Upchurch Combo- "You Can't Sit Down"
Smokin'!
Upchurch is a bad ass. "Six To Four" from BREEZIN'!
He actually creates his own guitars. Watch a interview he said he designed a lower cost guitar for beginners. So talented. Thanks Fil🤟🤟
Another Drifters song. So smooth. Thanks Fil
Yes, the Breezin' album was what introduced me to his Jazz sound. Our local radio station was playing his version of the Leon Russell song "This Masquerade' and I bought the album in 1976. I then bought his later albums. I haven't heard much from him in recent years but I also had an in concert video then that has since disappeared.
Thanks for reminding me to get out these old LPs and give them run on the turntable.
Smoooth! Thanks Fil!
Nice video, I always loved this "On Broadway" version.
Fil, if you have never heard it, check out George Benson's The Other Side of Abbey Road. Great album.
He is simply amazing! Nice to hear how he married the scat with the guitar. It makes it even more special.
I bought this album in the 70s. It was such a hit. Just as great today as it was back then!
