- Tonight we're taking a look at the King of Pop in the studio laying down some vocals! He's always been one of the hardest vocalists to analyse because of his voice remaining so consistent throughout his range, but here's my interpretation!

Seamus Lannon Ever heard of sarcasm? Anyway, Michael Jackson is Michael Jackson, not that ridiculously stupid name people made up back then. Was Michael the most normal guy around? Definitely not, but not in a way that deserves ridicule. So what he dressed different, so what he spoke and sang in a high voice, he also spoke and sang in a lower register as well. Anyone who cares about him being more eccentric than your average person needs to find a hobby cuz it’s not that serious. What people should care about is how he was one of if not the most giving celebrity ever. Gave millions to help others, would take time to actually go see people who were in need or who were sick, have benefit concerts, start charity funds, made so many songs about saving the earth, and helping humanity and so much more. But no, people only care about some non credible rumors people made up and can’t back up with evidence to save their life.

@@seamuslannon2006 yeah Presleyboy sold more, because he has 15 more albums than Michael. But Michael has the best selling album ever, best selling remix album ever, album with most nr1 singles. He had more fans, a lot more awards, a lot more recognition and a ton more talent.
Michael was obviously a unique talent but his tone of voice may well have been a family trait. I interviewed Jermaine and Janet on separate occasions in the 80s and they both had that light, almost childlike, ethereal way of speaking.
Back in the 80s, I did with a VHS tape & the TV what I did with audio cassettes and my boom box, only recording segments of TV shows esp music videos instead of recording my favorite songs off the radio. I also recorded every interview with all the Jacksons I could. One day, I just put the tape on, was listening while doing something else, when I heard an interview with Michael that I didn’t remember recording. When I looked up, it was Jackie talking, not Michael. I knew that all the brothers had similar voices, that’s why their songs sounded so great, they could harmonize together like no other group of people could. But I never realized Jackie’s (the oldest of all the boys) speaking voice was so nearly identical to Michael’s until I was only listening, not looking and seeing who was speaking.

I always felt that MJ's speaking voice was a front he put on. He was always very aware of the cameras being on him, so he was constantly performing for the cameras, even when he seemed relaxed.
20:40 This man could move to anything 😂 His whole body was an instrument, just phenomenal. I'm hopeful that in the future we'll have literature created by people who appreciate his talents so that people can learn from him and about him in the way he deserves.

This is great. I wasn't a big Jackson fan growing up, I just sorta accepted he was part of the pop culture universe as it were and I bopped to the iconic hits but never bought any or had his poster on my wall and it wasn't until the past year where I learnt all the evidence debunking that fraudulent HBO film (i hate those scammers) also got me looking into his history and what an amazing humanitarian he was that I felt some regret into not appreciating him more when he was around and and as someone who performs in musicals with a local theatre group (and I've recently started one on one singing lessons with a lovely teacher) I've found myself wanting to examine certain performers and dancers and while I have my longtime faves like Freddie Mercury I've also become fascinated with Jackson's unique talent too. I've watched a few of your other videos and this one got linked on twitter by some Jackson fans and I recognised it was you and I jumped in knowing this would be a good video to watch. :) Have a good day, sir. :)

Magical, he was just magical.... That is all that matters, there was no one like him. And that song, I remember when we first heard it. it still brings tears to my eyes. It was a real feeling from and for human beings. We have kind of lost that.

Insightful analysis, Fil! One of Michael's voice coaches was Seth Riggs, who teaches what he calls "speech-level singing." It's an approach that smoothly connects the chest and head registers of one's voice. Riggs's book, "Singing for Stars," teaches this (it comes with audio tracks with exercises). It relies a lot on using what Riggs calls an "edge sound," a kind of creaky door hinge sound. You use it to kind of un-train your voice from separating the chest and head registers. Many years ago I injured my voice (having to give many hours of professional talks during a bout of laryngitis), and I just gave up singing for a couple years; my voice kept getting caught in a certain range of notes. On a whim, I got Riggs's book, and those speech-level singing exercises soon got me able to sing through my broken area (connecting my chest and head ranges to some degree was a byproduct). That's just to say there really is something to speech-level singing. (I hasten to add that I'm nothing special as a singer, but I'm better than I was thanks to Riggs's book.)
A search turned up this audio track on YT of Riggs working with Michael. Some years ago one of my sons came running in saying, 'I've just heard an amazing song, you'll love it!' Like many young people he'd heard a cover and taken it for an original. The old Bill Withers song, Ain't no Sunshine, everyone covers it, I told him. I suggested he look for some other versions because the one he was so enamoured of wasn't great. A few days later he told me he'd listend to a few, including the original and he still preferred the first one he'd heard. I asked if he'd heard Michael Jackson's version. He's young so he really only knows MJ's later stuff and wasn't the least bit interested in hearing a disco version of his new favourite song. Anyway, I dug it out of my record collection and played it for him. He sat there, eyes wide and open mouthed it was so unlike anything he'd heard Jackson do and such a breathtaking performance. At the end he asked me how old Michael Jackson was when he recorded it. I looked at the date on the single and I knew he was born the same year as I was so I did the maths - 14. Astonishing.
yes ... aint no sunshie by MJ is, in my humble opinion, one of the best vocal performances EVER by anyone ... MJ being only 14 years old recording that makes it even more unbelievable.

Listen to Michael sing “You Can’t Win” from The Wiz - you’ll hear him sing at the bottom of his range at once point towards the very end of the song. It’s interesting to hear.
U can really tell in Fil’s face when the notes r spot on he’s appreciating the vocals of a musical genius. The same goes for Freddie Mercury’s vocals. 👍
I agree with what you said about MJ having such a soft personality and therefore a soft speaking voice- But second to that, I believe it's a Jackson family trait to speak very softly (I think it comes from Katherine, their mother). If you listen to the other Jackson siblings- Janet (for example) she is also very very softly spoken and has a shyness about her that I think is instinctual, perhaps bc of their upbringing. I only started to realise this when I would watch my own siblings when they would meet new people, or when just being served and was floored by how similar we are in our mannerisms and speech/ tone- inflections. So yes, I think MJ & his siblings spending a lot of time with mostly within their family, they all just started to mirror and reflect the way their mother spoke. Also, he had the sweetest giggle/ laugh.
That's True. Look at the Hart family (Stampede Wrestling- WWF etc) The whole family speaks like Stu Hart. Especially the girls (they had like 10 kids) Brett sounded a lot like Stu, Owen not so much, but with Owen being the youngest the other kids took care of him more.
This is exactly what I was thinking! People make fun of Michael's voice all the time but most of his family are just as soft spoken, especially Jackie. I also can't help but wonder if Michael used a softer tone because he didn't want to sound like Joseph as he always talked about how he didn't want to be like his father.

Wow! This was fascinating. I absolutely adore Michael Jackson. I strongly believe he was grossly misunderstood and his generosity was taken advantage of. But what always impressed me about him was his gigantic heart that was always on display not only in his music but in his treatment of others. My teenage crush in 1970! I had his picture as well as Donny Osmond on my wall : )) Of course, we learned much later in life what a terrible life the Jackson Five were living behind the scenes. I always felt that he was kind of too gentle and introverted for the music industry. It was his undoing in the end.

@Sherry G i also think this of Kurt Cobain. That he was also such an introvert that it was really difficult for him to deal with the fame aspect of the art that came to him. When that happens, the person you were gets lost or was never known to the public. You are no longer the person you used to be, it's lost forever. For introverts, they really must learn how to project extroversion which is something that is desirable in the entertainment field. With introverts it takes a toll on them. Alot of people dont realize that fame and the process it takes to get there isnt all it's been cracked up to be.

I remember reading a few years back (or maybe it was in that 'Bad 25' documentary from one of his vocal coaches?) that Michael spoke in head voice as a means to constantly train his voice. If you listen to certain recordings of him speaking to people on the phone, his speaking vocals when unguarded/relaxed, and even retellings of meetings with Michael, quite a few people say his voice was very deep, or at least deeper than he let on in the public. And he had an extremely thick accent to the point he slurred his words at times, which isn't uncommon with certain areas and dialects in the Midwest/Southern United States. In short, the man was a master, constantly working to bring his A-game.
MJ did more singing as a child than most other people in history. His voice developed that way, as did his siblings’ voices… I had heard that his vocal chords had tightened from all the singing as if he was just always singing…
He had vocal damage from excessive loud and high singing during his puberty years. He lost elasticity and developed vocal rasp at the top of his range.
Also, still remember where I was when he died. I was in a nightclub in Plymouth and we went to an 80’s bar when we heard and they played his music all night. Great night.
It looks easy... but what Micheal is doing is so hard to do! Not everyone can do it!:)
Not everyone is born with great vocal approach and technique. However it can be learned and with alot of practice (practice being the key) you can develop it. And you will learn the good and bad aspect of your own unique voice and and those things will further you as a vocalist. It is a bit of work to undertake, but if you love music it never seems like work.
MJ had it since birth. Even at a very young age in the Jackson 5 his voice destroyed.
He was born with it. He prefected it as he went along. It's that simple. I know cause I was born a singer. You kinda look.around at all there people and say how can u not sing. I'm the only singer in my family. I how no one to bounce off of except myself and the music I would hear and play. If there was something did that I couldn't quite get how they did it, I would try to figure it out. For example.Elvis in the song Way Down. When he sings I can fel, feel it, feel it, feel it. The FBI found nothing at all, and the people who have come forward have all been proven to have lied in one way or another, mainly with an economical interest. Vera 1957 Don’t spread fake news. He did have a rather big collection of perfectly legal heterosexual adult pornography, but no child pornography was ever found in the vicinity of Michael Jackson. The closest they got to finding inappropriate material was when they found a few art books that he had been given by fans throughout the years. The books featured lots of words of inspiration, but also, on some occasions, pictures of undressed kids in the context of bathing etc. On the inside of the cover, he had scribbled down notes about how he loved the innocence of children and how he wanted his own children to be just as happy and free as the children in the book; a chance that he was never given himself. The books were regarded as 100% artistic and not in the slightest bit pornographic, and these were just a handful of books in an extremely sizeable collection anyway. Of course it couldn’t be used in court. They didn’t have anything on him and the stories of the witnesses didn’t add up at all.
He was obviously not conventional. I believe he was a very immature person, having gotten his childhood stolen away. He was spending all his life helping other children in need, trying to recreate a childlike wonder for himself and others. Since he was that childish, he didn’t understand how slumber parties between a grown up stranger and children could be seen as greatly inappropriate. He had lots of them, with both boys and girls all together. He would sleep on the floor and let the children sleep in his bed, but I still think that the parents were awful to let their kids sleep alone with a stranger who could potentially hurt them. That’s where the responsibility was truly lacking. Michael was surely bohemian and didn’t have a particularly big understanding of the adult world, but that doesn’t mean that he ever hurt children. No evidence points at him having been attracted to any child in any other capacity than the psychological.

*11:54* This vocal warmup that you demonstrated was also taught to me by a voice teacher who trained Metropolitan Opera singers. Additionally, I found it interesting that you mentioned about Michael's "chest voice" because this same voice teacher would remind me to sing from the diaphragm and not the throat. I've read throughout the years that Michael's voice was naturally soft. As always, I enjoyed your musical analysis and watching Michael in the studio was very special--it showed what a professional he was. From one musician to another, fab job, Fil!

Your analysis was amazing. So many details. We can notice that Michael really knew the total range of his voice. He was testing it over and over to get a result that he already knew was possible to achieve. He already had it in his mind but he had to figure out how to bring it to reality. HinFil! One of my daughter’s big albums was Thriller! I never threw that album away when she left home...I walked into an antique shop, and the owners had the exact album under glass....telling me it was worth some money! I immediately told my daughter, and got that album back in her possession! I remember her buying it when it first was released! I believe she is hanging on to it now! Now to the song We Are the World...Michael’s voice was so good on that song! He was such a bright light at that point! He was a stand out even as a child...you just knew there was something special about him! Donny Osmond was popular at the same time, and I remember she adored both of them! I was glad she followed such nice young men! Michael was such a perfectionist, and that showed! Good analysis! ✌️

Great video as usual. You are the man Fil!! As a 69 year old woman I grew up listening to the Jackson Five and Michael Jackson. My mom and I both loved him . I loved the Documentary that was made towards the end of Micaheal's life when he was interviewing dancers for his last world tour. They came from all over the world and said that Michael's dancing inspired them and that it was harder than it looked. Sometimes people forget that Michael was also an amazing dancer .
He brings joy to my life, I can just listen to his voice and instantly I feel so calm and everything feels right.
I listen to his message a lot, he was and still is such an inspiration, a humanitarian and a bless for the world. Never forget him and his art, cause he was one of a kind. He wished for this place to be better, for us to be better and we should really look into his words and lyrics, to see the true Michael Jackson.

Yes it hasn't been altered in any way that I can distinguish, his voice and range is quite common for great male vocalists it's just that he spoke in a very light head voice tone.

I know this was three years ago but I just discovered it. This video is epic on so many levels. First that we get to see and hear just Michael by himself and hear his voice and see his personality. I am not a musician or a singer and so I don't know what head voice or chest voice is (although both of my parents were professional classical musicians), but I find your analysis on this so interesting including even Michael's personality and psychological aspects brought into the mix. Really really fascinating. You have an amazing amount of knowledge, wisdom, and confidence for someone so young. (You seem young. I don't know how old you are). Michael sang from childhood as a pro..had quite a range…his head voice was his falsetto I believe he maintained that from childhood because he had the ability. That technique was taught by operatic teachers to formally taught singers. Michael had a very unique ability to be able to critique his own takes and was a consummate artist.
As a teacher it’s always a red flag for abuse when a child speaks as a younger version of themselves. He’s still a top singer and a wonderful artist. He did say himself that his father was abusive. His family members have a similar quality and the same dad.

Fil, Totally educational. Head and chest voice explanation is excellent. I did not know a thing about it. You made it understandable the first time. A good analogy to describe vocal warm-ups is watching athletes jumping up and down, stretching their legs, doing goofy moves before a race. Then, they get down to serious business.
Watching this video Michael seems like a pretty happy guy and in a good place in his head doing what he loved to do. It made me smile to see this clip of Michael Jackson. He meant so much to millions of people.
