Hey Fil, I know you usually examine music videos, but have you ever done fox hunter vs. sab (what pro-foxhunting people call saboteurs for short) videos? They are crazy entertaining. Especially the ones from the West Midlands. To an American, they are fascinating to watch.

The gal with blond hair on keyboards and background vocals, on Harry's right size, often plays the tambourine. She wasn't shown as much in that section of tambourine, so maybe that's why?

I don’t know why they discount you if you’re in a boy band. You still have to have talent. Musicians are just that, musicians. They deserve more credit then they get.

    • @OceanChild7
      @OceanChild7 Před 3 lety +6

because boybands of 90's were overflowing "the market" and there was much more commercial aspect to them than the talent and the art of music. On the other hand, One Direction stands out because they had all three aspects perfectly executed there but general public only notices the commercial part of them, sadly. The more they're silent, though, the more commercial part is forgotten and it allows their performances and the music itself speak for them.

They all kinda have done George Michael. Naill Horan makes great music, like Harry, he has 2 albums out. He just doesn't have Harry's "swag" factor (he's got his own tho xD) and his level of popularity is much lower than Harry's at least it was stepping out of the band. But it shouldn't be relevant in this channel's audience, should it?)) He's a huge Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen fan, and it shows in his lives.
Louis Tomlinson imo had a great debut album out, it's not ideal due to various reasons but it's a good one. And he's making the second at the moment, I hope to hear growth and experiment there.
Zayn's not my genre at all but his innovative approach to it has my respect anyway.
Liam Payne's been through rough patch but I still hope he'll get back to making his own music cuz I really liked what he did in 1D.
What I'm trying to say, they all make their own music and I actually enjoy most of it, even though I never knew I would like anything related to One Direction, I've been cringing at the name for 10 years and I haven't even given them one listen. I was wrong. Despite widely spread opinion that they were manufactured lipsynching autotuned band, they wrote their own stuff and performed it live really well, they sold out stadiums, which wasn't that common at the time. The footage from their live shows confirms their audience wasn't just teen girls. I hope they'll gain more respect when commercial dust setlles in, it's already happening.

I admit to having an aversion to boy bands so I wasn’t inclined to like Harry Styles from the outset but I was impressed by his Fine Line album. And when I began watching his live performance videos including the one he did on the Graham Norton my admiration grew. Add the fact that he has an actual full time band with talented musicians my respect was well earned. It’s uncanny how his voice has a similar tenor to Peter Gabriel, he truly is a great talent.
Interesting nugget from Fil about his producing experience, it would be good to hear more about that.

One Direction may surprise you as well! I just found Harry around the time he was on Stern and from there did some digging into One Direction. They were nothing like the boy bands of my time (like NKOTB, Color Me Badd, BSB). They didn't dance (well, they did some terrible but awesome dancing that wasn't choreographed, they just moved on stage with amazing stage presence), didn't dress alike and were complete chaos in the best way. They started having a lot more say creatively and did most of the writing by their third album which was much more rock than pop. They also had a live touring band (the same band throughout their career), one of the guys (Niall Horan, who is also killing it solo now) played guitar during most performances, and were 100% live without a ton of tech or auto tune. They were the real deal! I was pleasantly surprised and they now make up most of my playlist.

And I'm saying this as someone who grew up on classic rock, and NEVER liked boy bands. I guess I was an old soul, because all my friends loved current pop and boy bands, but I was listening to the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, the Doors, Van Morrison, the Eagles, etc. 1D was really different, and they are all talented and their personalities were very charismatic, esp. Harry. They're def worth a listen. They are also no. 1 on my playlist even though I didn't discover them until after I heard Harry's solo music.

It’s quite misogynistic when you get to the root of why people automatically dislike young male bands with large female audiences. All of the lads from 1D are insanely talented but are highly discredited because of people’s opinions of boy bands. When people do a little research and decide not allow their implicit biases to control their opinions suddenly they find out that all of them have an incredible impact on the music industry. Also Harry is proud of what 1D gave him, he always says in interviews how upsetting it is for people not take his career seriously, to want him to dislike his own band he worked so hard in and his past. His talent was there from the start it’s other people’s mistakes when they cannot realize this.

@@hermionedannunzio9422 Negative opinions are unecessary. It boils down to your personal taste in music who you feel has better talent. Also you must know the advantages that were given to some and taken from others. For example Harry was given every opportunity whilst Liam and Louis wrote the majority of the lyrics that Harry became most famous for singing. Niall taught Harry to play guitar. Zayn has a remarkable voice but because of his Pakistani Muslim background he was less sellable to the majority islamafobic public . They instead went with Harry because he was more easily sellable. You also need to understand how the music industry works. Just because a person has the biggest financial backing doesn’t mean that they did all the work themselves. The person who is behind the scenes putting together the lyrics and melodies for the show deserves their share of consideration. The X Factor is designed for 1 person to be the stand out star so they put everything behind the easily sellable person. They will sabotage the others in the group to get the outcome that they planned on all along. Most people don’t want to pay enough attention to what is really happening.!They just want to see something shiny.

@@hannahnur6784 Jesus Christ , here we go again ppl discrediting harry again and taking it away from him . He has a whole voice , he's fucking talented and that's why he was chosen . Why can't you just respect him and the voice and talent he has ? You just ignore him and call him privileged coz he had a great voice since the beginning , have you not see him struggle with his confidence and health over the years ? Just bcoz he doesn't go out talking about his emotions and problems you can't just say that he is privileged . You can praise Louis for his writing , he got most of the songs but you can't appreciate Harry's vocals and voice and have a problem with his singing ?! I can also go around saying " they didn't choose any other boys songs ?! Partial omg " no , I don't . But you guys really have hard time appreciating harry and his talent and what he has done alone !

Peter Gabriel’s original “Sledgehammer” was defined as much, if not more, by the MTV video with the song as it was by the music. The same goes for the Talking Heads “Burning Down the House” and The Clash’s “Rock the Casbah.” The release of those videos roughly marked the beginning and the end of my grad school career and the heyday of MTV. It’s nice to revisit the music as music and not just a component of a video.

Core blimey !!! Sarah Jones does a fantastic job. She’s the one elevating this excellent cover. She reminds me so much of Charlie Watts and Ringo Starr in her approach to drumming. Concrete steady , keeping it brilliantly basic and not jeopardising the beat & tempo with anything unnecessary show offs. Only 1 real fill at the end of the song. To me , that’s the true mark of a master craftsman. I bow in admiration.

Harry Styles is this generations' Bryan Ferry, but a far superior singer to the former. Bryan, to his credit, knew how to make up for his shortcomings by surrounding himself with fantastic players, same as this young gent. He's got the moves, charisma and confidence of some of the great frontmen of rock and roll's past.
