I remember first hearing this song in the early 80's when i was in college... it's really cool how he scats while playing his guitar...
Here's a song where the player "scratches" on guitar strings....pretty cool to watch and listen to....

True story: One of my husband's customers when he was a wholesale florist in the San Francisco area in the 1980's was a concert promoter. You might be surprised to know literally ALL artists want some kind of flowers in their dressing room. My husband would supply them and we were usually offered very good tickets to see the show. I saw George Benson in the Bay Area in 1983. I was very pregnant at the time. The stage was circular and moved around during the performance. The band was 21 pieces!! Lots of percussionists. It was incredible!! We were in the 2nd row and he made a lot of eye contact with the audience. Even if you didn't care for that kind of music, you'd have been floored by talent of each of the musicians he had with him. Great experience I haven't forgotten. I think he wanted a particular kind of orchids in his dressing room, but it's been so many years.

Well, sometimes when parents try to "force feed" music on their kids, the kids resist, just instinctively. But I think that music that you hear your folks playing when you're growing up, ends up getting into your system whether you are aware of it or not. I know that's what happened to me. There's music my parents listened to that I didn't care for as a kid, because it was "old people music", haha -- but that now, I happen to really dig.

    • @oldarpanet
      @oldarpanet Před 3 lety +1

As a toddler, I didn't resist. I got to hear such pieces as The Grand Canyon Suite, William Tell Overture and such. Great pieces of music. Mom's/Dad's music isn't bad because it's mom's or dad's.
My daughter nagged me into taking her to a used-clothing store because she wanted to see what she could get.....on the way we were driving, the radio was on (think 1997-ish, she was mid teens) On the radio came a song: Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company, performing Piece of My Heart. I dug it because I was 11 or 12 when I first heard it and it was revolutionary! Now, I and my daughter of 14 or 15 was riding in the car with me, this song was on the radio and (as sometimes happens) we were both singing along with the radio, completely unaware the the other was even aware that the song existed!
I, without an intention to do so, inculcated in my child an appreciation for Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, the Grateful Dead, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and more.
If that is "parents try to "force feed' music on there kids" then I am Proudly guilty!

a bit of George's history: his original "claim to fame" was primarily as an instrumental jazz guitarist in the 1960s, very well-known and respected. He rarely did vocals until the mid 1970s, when his "Breezin'" album was a huge breakthrough -- and I recall Guitar Player magazine featuring him (again) at the time, pretty much in awe of the fact this great guitarist they'd known and featured for years had some serious vocal talent as well. His famous recording of the Drifters' song "On Broadway" was on a live album from 1978, and became a huge hit, a Grammy winner, and pretty much a signature song for him.

When I was in high school, the marching band did this song. I was on drill/pompom squad. We decided to high kicks on the drum/cymbal crash in song. The first week of practice, we were a sorry lot. But on first night in field at game, we NAILED IT! We performed this when we were in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in 1983. The band stopped in front of the theater. We ROCKED IT!

George Benson, like others of the 70s and 80s were the best at their craft… We called them legacy entertainers, thanks for reacting to our legacy.
Great music never died. You can always learn and love years later and that’s what you’re doing and that’s wonderful…

My mother listened to "Big "Band" and daddy liked ballads. My favorite aunt listened to Beethoven and Mozart. My older brother liked The Righteous Brothers and my older sister liked Elvis. I grew up with 70s/80s Rock n Roll. It's great to have appreciation for all kinds of music and I am grateful that the stereo was always playing in my house.

  • @mgentles3

I was 4 going on 5 in 1955/1956 with three older brothers and three older sisters. I remember the music they listened to like it was yesterday. I remember Mama listening to Mahalia Jackson's TV show and Tennessee Ernie Ford and Pat Boone's shows. Never liked Pat Boone much, but I'll never forget Elvis's debut on Ed Sullivan and one sister so excited by it. When the songs from that era play I can sing along almost word for word. By the time I was twenty/twenty-five, I couldn't tell you who sang the songs I liked to listen to. Life happened. I would never have remembered George Benson's name, though I loved his songs. And that goes for much of the music you react to.

I have older siblings ... oldest is 18 yr older. I absorbed their music from day one. We got a piano when I was about 7. We all discovered my father knew how to play. I'd sit on the bench with him and sing Jonny Cash songs. I was blessed to start my musical journey very early on.

Me too. Because of my older siblings, i watched the Beatles on Sullivan and grew up with the British Invasion, Dylan, Motown, CCR, etc. On my own i fell in love with more 60s, 70s and 80s music, including soul and funk. I also worked in record stores and that's another education because you learn about all of your coworkers' favorite music. But it all started because I had older siblings, and my musical tastes are blessed because of it.

George is one of the most amazing guitar men ever. I have been playing for over 50 years, and I still can't make sense of what I see him doing and what I'm hearing. His fingers are unlike anyone else alive or dead. I saw him in the summer of 1976, when the Breezin' album came out. Michael Franks was the warm up act, and he was jazzed like crazy because he had forgotten his guitar strap in LA, and George had lent him his. It's the one in the pic on the back of the Breezin' album. He thought is was SO cool. And it was.
Then George came out and his bass player came out, dropped a tambourine on the floor, stepped into it, plugged his bass in, and played both all night long. George blew me away like nobody's business. I had to go home and digest what I had seen and heard, so I didn't even take the guitar out of the case for 3 days. There was no point. This man is an absolute master of the 6 string instrument. Funny thing is, though, I have a DVD of a private lesson with GB, and he clearly KNOWS what he's doing, but explaining it to you? That's a different story.
One AMAZING player, and a sweet guy, from what I've heard and can tell.

Still have a few albums on vinyl, but the live-album "Weekend in LA" (1977) is the one I've played the most back in the day! The scat and guitar-fills on "On Broadway" i could literally remember and singalong with! (not as good as him tho) Mr. Benson is a great guitarist and singer...saw him live a few times over here in the Netherlands at the North Sea Jazz festival and he was tearing the roof off! This man's career spans more than 6 decades...

To hear his total mastery of jazz guitar, check out Benson’s first records, “Uptown with the George Benson Quartet” and “The George Benson Cookbook” with a great organ player and a young 20’s Ronnie Cuber killing it on the baritone sax solos.
