    Great videos. Good to see someone getting info on these laptops early for a change. I got the m15 r2 with i7 and 2080 max-q (as I mostly game on in this laptop). I was hoping to see the vapor chamber make more of a difference on thermals though.

    • @tr3mer891
      @tr3mer891 Před 4 lety

      Also I do have to ask if you recommend the the i7 over the i9 for best gaming performance (also taking into account thermals). As I have a theory that the i9 could out perform the i7 by keeping the clock speed down to say 4.2 GHz on the i9 and getting much better thermals out of it campared to the i7 running stock?? My i7 seems to run around 96 ish on Max fan settings and stock 2080. i7 has a 0.120 undervolt also. (Temp is based on games like ff15 and the latest tomb raider running near max settings at 1080). Trying to decide on what I should be looking for on the next laptop. Is the i9 worth the slight gaming boost and more importantly is the thermals better.

    • @advancedvector6833
      @advancedvector6833  Před 4 lety +1

      This is just coming from experience etc..so take it for what it is but I doubt you would notice any improvements from a gaming perspective between an i7 and an i9. In fact I have seen other reviews by major youtubers that indicate that unless you have the absolute top of the line stuff an i5 does not create a bottleneck most of the time. Unless you have a specific use case for the additional cores i'd say stick to the i7.

    I have the m17 r3 with i9 and 2080 super (non max-q). Prior to undervolting and underclocking it was running too hot. The CPU keeps ramping up to max clock speeds even during light gaming and it throttles the machine. Temps are almost always hitting 100 degrees for CPU and 85 - 90 degrees for GPU. After undervolting in Intel XTU, I managed to keep the temps of the CPU under 90 degrees Celsius and GPU barely ever hits 80 degrees now. Also no more throttling! Thanks for your earlier vid on thermals, definitely helped me out a lot

    I also noticed another issue on my system. The ports on the back of the system are hit or miss due to the angle of the back IO plate. The plugs do not sit flush with the backplate due to this angle and many of my cables will not work because I am not able to push them in enough!

    I literally just added this laptop to my cart today after returning a G5 15 laptop I bought 3 weeks ago. I haven’t purchased it yet because I was trying to find reviews for it. I found your channel and watched all of your videos on the m15. It definitely helped my decision to go ahead and make the purchase. I went with the I7 and the RTX 2080 super. I returned the G5 for 2 reasons. One, the thermals were so bad and two, even though it met all the requirements for VR, it couldn’t run the Oculus Quest because, according to Dell customer service, it didn’t have any ports linked directly to the gpu which is required for Oculus link. I see where their website says that this one IS vr ready so I guess I’ll find out when it gets here. Anyway, thanks for the great videos. They really did help with my decision!

    Thanks for the video. I am not a tech savvy and I am planning to buy M17 R3 (Dell US site) but for M17 I noticed that the graphics card they provide is RTX 2080 Max P whereas M15 R3 is RTX 2080 Max Q. I do realize that having Max Q will reduce your thermal. But I don’t know whether the thermal be very high with Max P or not? If it will be very high then can you tell me how can I reduce the thermals and the configuration I need to use to increase the product life cycle. Will be great if you clear these doubt of mine.
    Cheers from UAE.

    It is so refreshing and novel to have a person who is not a 'pro' reviewer that receives computers from companies for review. Often the pros do not get production models that have problems consumers have to deal with (case in point, the new Razer 15"; all the pros give it a great review, but when you go onto Amazon, you see how low the production model rated because of the Razer's poor quality control and the following horrible customer service (both issues which the pros never have to deal with). So thank you, thank you for your care and hard work, and being so awesome (I am a fan)!
    OK, my two questions: How hot does your machine get when used on your lap? Other reviewers reported problems of this nature on the early M15 models; one said that it gets so hot you cannot use it on your lap (and I work on my easy chair and airports on my lap quite a bit). Have you ever tried using it on your lap for typing and browsing?
    Second question: I am doing as you did, which is planning on replacing my old gaming laptop and old work laptop into one machine.
    I am trying to decide between this M15 (with an i7 and 2060 or 2070 card) and the new XPS 17 with an i7 and an RTX 2060 Max-Q (if i get the XPS, I plan on overclocking the 60hz screen for gaming). I am mostly traveling, and do A LOT of typing and light video editing (and plan on doing more 4k editing, which requires an upgrade from my 4-year-old XPS 15).
    So what is your experience of using your M15 as a work laptop? How is your experience of typing with the M15 (I like the feel of my old XPS 15 keyboard and trackpad, and thinking that the Alienware is similar or the same)? How is it for you as a work-daily driver? Any thoughts about which computer I should buy (and do you think l I do ok with 4k video editing with the M15 with an i7 2060 max)?

      @advancedvector6833  Před 4 lety +1

      I'm actually really enjoying it as a work laptop as well. The battery life is kind of a bummer with the i9 and the 300hz panel but still gets me a solid 3 hours on web browsing, outlook, word, etc... I personally do not actually use a laptop on my lap however unless you were gaming or severely covering up all the air intakes i don't think it'd get too hot to have on your lap.

      Yes I do think that your thermals would be good with a 2060 it is actually probably the best bang for your buck in terms of heat and performance. I mentioned to someone else you can always go the 2060 route and if you still have cash left over just get a Graphics Amplifier with a 2080 and then you really only suffer when you are on the road.

    I’ve been seeing a lot people having issues with this laptop like speakers not working, the Alienware command center not working, blue screening and overheating is this because it’s new? Like when console first comes out there’s multiple problems with them. so should wait a couple of months before buying this?

    • @advancedvector6833
      @advancedvector6833  Před 4 lety

      Those kinds of problems are very common with a new release. If that kind of stuff worries you then yes i'd recommend waiting a few months for the bugs to be worked out. That being said they have already released several bios updates and other fixes and I was having some BSOD issues that have cleared up now. For the most part I'd say its pretty stable as long as you get the latest updates from the Dell website.

      @onetapfrostea6189 Před 3 lety

      SnoopCreature17 late response but I’m actually getting one of these myself and I’ve been stressing a lot cause yes indeed it’s a big purchase. It’s impossible for any tech company or company in general to have a perfect quality control unless the product is very basic. Ur never gonna hear from the thousands or millions of people with these laptops who got them working perfectly fine. But u will hear from the minority of people on reddit talking about their issues. Also, the blue screening stuff ties into the thermals . To not drag this on and make it quick intel chips have maxed their temp at 100 degrees C. Intel says they can run up to this hot so AW says ok 100 max. They r giving you the laptop with full performance capabilities, no restrictions. Idiots who buy alienware thinking it’s a plug in and play like a console then cry about thermals are prolly the ones you are reading reviews from or reddit posts and worrying you. Other laptop manufacturers limit their temps to 90 or 95 and they purposefully undervolt/tune down the components inside which to me is a little stupid bc if I’m paying for the laptop and it’s specs it’s hard to justify someone purposefully tuning those specs down; even if it’s for thermals (yet I still see all these other laptops running very hot, razer in particular) AW laptops always have the best performance and very good quality to their laptops. This means you are getting everything unlocked, and you can undervolt to ur liking. It makes me question how some people spend 2-3k on something not knowing what they are buying and it seems like a lot of laptop users just don’t know wtf they r doing when it comes to controlling the laptop and it’s components. It doesn’t take much to learn how to undervolt, and u can even cap ur core boost speeds or pick lower performance options to get better thermals. Basically AW is giving you control and performance whereas other companies are giving you control but with already tuned down components. Personally and logically I’d go with AW bc If im paying for what’s inside I want the full capabilities unlocked, and like I said it doesn’t take much to fuck around with some settings and undervolting to get good thermals AND performance. Ik this was long and I’m 2 months late so this might all be useless info for you at this point, but if it’s not hopefully it helped .

    Regarding the comment on your first video about the M15 trackpad: People are reporting that their new XPS 15 and XPS 17's are having a problem with the trackpad being "loose" and the clicking not being tight (and other people saying they are not having this problem). I wonder if Dell is having a problem with their new trackpads? The older XPS's did not have this problem, and people returning their new XPS's are finding their replacements are not having this problem. One reviewer (David Lee) (who's preproduction model did not have this problem) said he heard people went inside and tightened the screws and used tape, and it fixed the problem. You might want to check this out if you are having trouble with your trackpad.

    06/20/2020: Alienware 2020 M17 R3 Laptop received.
    06/22/2020: Keyboard problem found, when I press the "O", "N", and "G" keys together, it types the "\" key automatically. I was curious and not sure if this is the hardware problem, so I tried to fix this issue by myself first. Besides, I use my wifi-keyboard, which has no same problem, most of the time, so it didn't affect the normal use too much.
    07/26/2020: Finally, I figured out this is the product design and quality problem. So I called technical service, David H. (who is the only one who tried to help me during the who process) from technical department helped me through the phone and remote control. He was trying to identify the problem and solve it. We spent 1 hour and 40 min to make sure this is not a software problem, and he reserved a on-site technician for me.
    07/28/2020: A 74-years old gentleman called James C. C. came around 3:00 pm for the on-site service. He spent more than 3 hours (David told me this work usually takes about 1 hour) to "repair" my computer. At the end, he told me, the backlight of keyboard cable is not long enough, and during the "repair", he broke a cable on the motherboard, however he was not sure what's that cable for. He claimed he was not capable of the job, such as seeing and handling the tiny screws due to age issue. When I turned my laptop back on, the old keyboard was not fixed at all, the worse thing was two more problems created (backlight of keyboard, and Alien head light on the cover). When I lifted the laptop, a screw almost fell off, then I found almost no external screws were put back firmly. A new scratch on the cover surface found.
    07/29/2020: I found a screw belongs to the internal components of the computer near my chair. So I was not sure how many more problems were hidden inside the case. Multiple phone calls to the technical support department, no results but just want me to wait for the second on-site service.
    07/31/2020: This time a new on-site technician was dispatched, Michael G. He didn't call me or schedule a time either on the designated day or today (08/01/2020). I called technical support for the fifth time, I was then told to wait on Monday.
    08/01/2020: Additional lighting systems (power alien head, vent light) stopped working.
    08/02/2020: New keyboard problem found: when "F", "G", "H", and "J" keys pressed together, equals to press "F1" key. This problem confirmed by another 2020 alienware M17 R2 owner.
    08/03/2020: New keyboard and motherboard were replaced. Lighting system is back in function. Keyboard problems remain. Worse thing is that Speaker and microphone are not working. Contacted customer care, who just let me waiting for calls within 24-48 hours.
    08/04/2020: Refund or return refused. Problem not fixed. A third time on-site service scheduled.
    08/05/2020: New on-site tech Benjamin G was really nice. Changed the daughterboard of speaker and microphone. It turns out it was broken by the previous one. Also change the control unit of the keyboard, however, problems REMAINED. But he called to explain and escalate this issue with Dell tech support for 2 hours. Total service for 4 hours. He tried his best. Should receive supervisor calls by the end of today, but nothing yet.
    08/20/2020: Still no solution, hope they are working on it.
    09/04/2020: Service request closed w/o a solution. Totally helpless.

But, if you want to Dial it up to "Full speed" Or "Performance" you can easily get above 120 FPS On max settings on warzone, although you will be getting temps that are in the mid 90's could be 97 tops. Al of these options are given in the Alienware command center where you can change the modes.

I got help from someone telling me that’s one of the best ways to reduce thermals but it confused me why so many people were crying about thermals on the Alienware when literally in the AWCC if your that concerned about thermals, u can just use the cool fan option lmao. It’s become apparent to me it seems like most people who buy laptops treat them as consoles like they are just a plug in and play meanwhile there’s a lot of settings to customize at ur disposal.

    If you want a G sync display, it is available for most i7's. The Dell website is weird. I checked on the Dell site and found a 32Gb configuration with an i7, and a 2060 or 2070 card and a 1 TB drive..perfect! But then I noticed the G sync display was not available on that configuration! I was bummed. I then went to Dell chat, and he showed me a 16GB/512 GB drive configuration that offered a Gysnc display (for an extra $29, great!), and then on that configuration, I was able to bump up to 32 Gbs, upgrade the 512 to 1 TB and I got the Gsync upgrade. Isn't that weird??
    G sync is important because it can extend the life of your battery, so look over all of the configurations carefully and you can find it for your i7 configuration. BTW, I have no explanation why, but Dell only offers one i9 model with a 300mhz display and does not offer G sync. I checked for those interested in an i9, and after being on chat for over 30 minutes, the agent could not add the $29 upgrade to the i9 configuration for the Gsync (sorry guys). But if you are looking at an i7, it is there to be had if you look.
