DeVilbiss GPI Review & Demo

  • The new DeVilbiss GPI is an outstanding gun in many ways, it is priced so that most people can afford it, is extremely versatile with the option of buying extra fluid tips so the gun can be used for nearly any application from basecoats, clear coats, 2k direct gloss colour, primer surfacers and even primer fillers, the gun came with a 1.4mm and I also got the 1.6-1.8mm fluid tip and needle as an extra for only $50 AUD, and the gun itself was only $300, it is capable of getting top quality results and an acceptable finish by any top painters standard. Easy to setup and parts are readily available and all affordable, the DeVilbiss lovers may think the gun looks familiar and they would be right because it is made in the same mold as the DeVilbiss GTI Pro however it is a budget version of its predecessor and air caps are not like the GTI Pro where you can go from the T110-T2 and H1, this is not a problem for me because the GP1 air cap that it does come with is perfectly suited to the materials I use and my style of painting.

    What a great vid, Gunny! This looks like a good gun for me. I keep thinking I'll just rent one when I rent a booth, but what are the odds it won't be cleaned out right. PS your camera work is so good I forget you're doing it. Thanks so much, will check out your revised website too.

      MickHornbak I just looked online and it looks like I paid 150 for the gun. Then another 67 for all the tips. Yes I did see a needle in the package with the tips also. I'm going to guess those prices are in pounds or whatever they use in the UK. Viel Glück on finding what you need cheap.

    Thank you so much for all the great videos you do! I ordered a GPI and used it to spray a couple test panels and really like it. On your video you said you do full fan and full fluid for base coat on repair jobs. Do you recommend the same settings for base coat on a complete paint job? Thanks for helping us DYI guys!

    I've sprayed a few cars of my own over the years and only used acrylic paints. As a DIY guy I am happy using the Acrylic paints.
    Thanks for the vid! I have decided on the GPI as my one gun! Ordered only 20 mins ago from "Spraygunsdirect"
    With the Ra28 project I am looking forward to better result with some practice with this gun. also got the ANI regulator. Very excited. Thanks for the vids! I tend to watch the same Vids over a few times every few months because there is soo much useful information in them. Especially for DIY guys looking to get some tips with live application. Great Job!

    • @blinkiben
      @blinkiben Před 7 lety

      one more thing... I think i recall you saying it has the conventional air cap as well. I may need to look at an air compressor upgrade. I will test on some panels first though. just to recap. conventional cap = less psi for greater atomisation..

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  Před 7 lety +4

      Blinki Ben I sat the GPI air cap next to my TE10 cap and I could see no difference at all except for the name on the front, I bet it is identical to the TE10. It would make sense too, why would they do more R&D on a budget gun when they already have the tech there and the TE10 was a LVLP cap so low air consumption and still operates well at low pressure so as you say just give it a go and see how it goes. Just don't forget to wind that fluid in a bit, I sold my apprentice my GPI and he got a few runs because he forgot to readjust the fluid, I ended up setting it on 2.5 turns out and he's much better with that.

    Hi Gunman, I love your videos and you're a very knowledgeable person on automotive paint! I know you're a busy guy so you may not have time to respond to this but I'm looking for a primer gun for 3d printed parts to lay on flat but the props I'm working on are the size of helmets and about as long as a rifle. I wanted to go with three guns two of which would be the ANI R150 Mini. Do you think I should use a bigger gun for that small of parts that I would be using it with and for a primer gun that lays on flat with hardly no orange peel would I be better off with the GPI or the AZ3 for a smooth 2k primer application?
    Any information would be highly appreciated.

    just watched one of your videos on the drift car,quarter panel and door repair, you were talking about going to use more waterbase in Thailand, keep us posted on what you think of it and preferences compared to solvent, personally I prefer water but it does take longer to dry but much cleaner and no reactions, also have you learned how to say get out there and paint some shit in thai yet lol

  • @michor10

    I know this is an old video but it seems that the GPI is still a great gun in 2018 so I ordered one from Amazon with the 1.4 tip for around 230 euros. Unfortunately the 1.8 nozzles are so expensive (around 90 euros plus another 35 for the needle! ) and hard to find that it's probably more reasonable to just buy a whole second gun if you want both tip sizes. Seems to me that the gun may have been discontinued. Is there another gun in this price range that you could recommend with similar quality and better support? Cheers and thanks for the great videos.

    so i got my gpi in the mail today, i had a couple spot repairs to do at work last night & lemme tell ya I'm blown away on how great this gun primes! it keeps the primer overspray at a minimum allowing for less but better coverage with your topcoats, & it atomizes so well that the primer didn't texture my finish, i went directly over the primer with topcoat before my window closed for adhesion! i love it! again thanks for this review!

      i just got the gpi with only the 1.8 tip option, they had it listed to choose the tip 1.4,1.6,or 1.8 at spraygundirect. i wish they had all three in the package. i paid about $275 US shipped for the gpi & the 1.8 tip. the gun is definatly my new best friend besides my iwata lph80 104g

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  Před 8 lety +1

      Yeah I love mine too, for future reference you can add the extra 2 tips and fliud needle for under $30 from memory so real cheap, hardly worth paying the extra shipping cost now but if you ever do another order with them just add it to the top, so you'd need the 1.4mm tip & needle and just 1.6mm tip cos it shares the same needle as the 1.8mm you already have.
      Me and SpraygunsDirect are doing a few gun giveaways soon too so stay tuned for that.

    hello gunny I'm a painter for a company called Altec industries here in the US, we spray & repair utility bucket trucks first off thank you for your reviews & videos including tech/application information. after watching this video i went to ebay & ordered this same GPI from spraydirect. i purchased the spray gun with the 1.8 tip nozzle. im planning on using for spraying metal flake & primer but eventually i will buy the 1.4 & 1.6 tip sets. would this spray gun be good for shooting standard size flakes (0.15) with intercoat clear (sg-150) by hok? thanks again for your dedication & videos!

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  Před 8 lety +1

      Yes it shouldn't have any problems at all, I actually have a video where I use this exact gun spraying flakes, so for future reference the 1.8 you ordered shares the same fluid needle with the 1.6 so if you do decide to get the 1.4+1.6mm setup you'll need another needle but only for the 1.4mm

    I'm thinking of buying a new gun. Is there so much difference between this gun and the Ani f150 or the iwata az3? I paint only a couple of times per year. Is it worth the extra money or will one of the others be fine?

    Hey Gunman. I have an lph400 I want to use strictly for base because it lays base great but I can't seem to lay my clear out flat with it all the time. I want to get a strictly clear gun so in your opinion would you go with the techna pro, prolite, or this gpi? I spray a few projects on average per month.

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  Před 8 lety

      If price is an issue then go for the FLG5/SGK under $200, Tekna Pro lite is top notch and if you can afford it then get it cos it's the best but if you have a mid range budget and want a real good gun then get this one.
      Just had a look and you could have the gun shipped to your door with a 1.4mm for $256.90 and have all 3 tip sizes 1.4-1.6 & 1.8mm for $296.19 they had my order to me in 3 days too.

      Thanks for the reply,,, prolite it'll be then. I don't mind spending the cash for a quality gun cause it will pay for itself over time anyway and it will last years so what's a couple extra bucks, right?

      @TheGunmanChannel  Před 8 lety +1

      I totally agree man and good luck, I recommend the pro lite with TE20 and 1.3mm but think you guys in USA get mad deals and big bundles of tips caps and regulators etc..

      Hard question which I don't really have an answer, all the guns you mentioned are good in their own right and wouldn't do bad by buying any of them.

    • @clickclive7472
      @clickclive7472 Před 8 lety

      +The Gunman fair enough. Im just struggling to get good finishes with the SGK. ive contacted spraygunsdirect and they said 2.5bar would be the best for the SGK and you mentioned 20-25psi. maybe 20% thinner for flatter finish ya reckon?

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  Před 8 lety

      Clive Camangon See they told me that and I said wow 2.5 bar is mega pressure, maybe 2 bar max but that's still high for me. Where are you based and how warm is it outside and inside where you paint? What paint you using?
      I just uploaded another vid on the SGK on a Plymouth Fury in Nason 2K

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  Před 8 lety

      Not sure on that one ask the paint rep but you usually shouldn't mix acrylic & 2k, try using 15-20% reducer in the clear for a nice flow.

      +The Gunman, I have a re-spray coming up and man I hate trying to do metal flake using the FLG-4. It really doesn't spray evenly enough for my taste.

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  Před 8 lety

      Rod Palm the tip size is most likely too small, try using a 1.8mm for the flake.

    • @rodpalm6398
      @rodpalm6398 Před 8 lety +1

      +The Gunman, I think that the FLG4 is really more of a primer gun and it's sold as a primer gun at a few different places, probably for good reason. It's not the tip size because this is very fine and thinned out PPG metallic, it's the fact that the FLG4 has a terrible spray pattern with that very small cheap ass air cap that only has a few holes. The spread on that gun is simply terrible IMO. I can easily see the difference when you are using the GPI with that nice wide even pattern, it's like night and day difference. Anyway, I just received my new GPI from the UK and I expect it to perform much better than the FLG4. Thanks for all the advice and guidance and I'll let you know how it goes.

    Just to double check, if you were to recommend this gun as a perfect allrounder, I assume the recommended mini gun would be mostly for the smaller tips/finer detail, but when would you use it providing you were only using the GPI and the mini.

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  Před 5 lety +1

      I'd basically use the mini for small areas, like wheels, spot repairs small motorbike parts etc. For full car panels and large areas just go with the GPi 1.4, as I say just be a touch careful with the clear coat stage using the GPi because it is a 1.4 and will put lots of material on so I wind the fluid in to 2.5 turns you.

      @@TheGunmanChannel that is great, thanks for the hastey reply! I have another question as I often paint with aerosols, however I'm looking to expand and work up to using guns regularly, as I plan got painting to eventually become my trade. Spray guns direct have have some compressor kits, that come with either a SAC5030VE which produces 11.6 cfm, or an additional option to upgrade to the NUAIR NV/50 which produces 12.6 cfm, which if I am not mistaken, both provide plenty of air and pressure for the GPI and the FLG5. Would you say the cheaper option out of the two would be a good move, or save myself money in the future by going to the NUAIR, or do you have any other suggestions for compressors?
