- Today I review a 2021 RAM 2500 Cummins and test the real world fuel economy of this Diesel Engine. I compare the 6.7 Cummins fuel mileage to a 6.4 hemi fuel economy and show you guys the major difference between the Cummins engine option and the 6,4 hemi gas engine in terms of fuel efficiency. Finally, I explain why diesel engines are naturally much more fuel efficient then gas engine.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful week! I am with my good friend once again and his beautiful 2021 RAM 2500 with the 6.7 Cummins. Seeing the price of fuel these days I thought it would be an awesome time to first review what a truck with the Cummins is getting in terms of fuel economy vs my 2022 ram 2500 power wagon with the 6.4 hemi. Diesels naturally are much more efficient and as you guys saw the Cummins got way better fuel economy on the same test route.
so first off. my 2022 power wagon has a couple disadvantages that has nothing to do with fuel type. the truck sits on more aggressive tires which is not going to help fuel economy. the power wagon also sits 2 inches higher meaning the aerodynamics are not going to be as good resulting in more fuel consumption. finally, the gearing in my truck is 4.10 vs 3.73 resulting in once again my truck drinking more fuel.
Now the cummins does have one disadvantage which is the weight. the weight of the cummins is equal to about an extra 1,000 pounds so the 2021 ram 2500 will weigh more then the power wagon.
now the reason the cummins and any diesel has so much better fuel mileage then a gas burning engine is a couple of things. first a gallon of diesel has about 10-15% more energy in it then a gallon of gas. so that right there is a pretty simple reason.
another reason is because of the thermal efficiency of the diesel engine. gas and diesel are both heat engines. meaning they translate heat energy in mechanical energy and the diesel does this at about 40% better then a gas engine. the reason is manly to do with the high compression ratio of a diesel engine.
a diesel engine is also unthrottled meaning you can throw as much air into as you want. whereas a gas engine throttles both air and fuel making is not as efficient at certain rpm ranges.
so those are the major reason a diesel is much more fuel efficient then a gas engine.
the last thing I'll mention is that the aftertreatment system on these truck also eat up some fuel economy. on average without an aftertreatment system a diesel engine is about 20% more efficient. so just keep that in mind.

I drove my truck 2016 6.7 cummins mega cab leveled on 20" wheels and 35s to el paso from Tulsa, OK to El Paso TX. I was driving about 80 to 95 mph and also used the hot shot daily on the fills on the tank. Got about 20 to 22 mpg sometimes had my rpms over 2000. I think it does pretty good for the set up and hauling azz.
I have a 2021 Cummins and have bigger wheels and tires with aggressive AT tires and still average 20.4 mpg average. Straight highway will be around 23mpg at 70-75mph. Best truck I ever owned
it is a little crazy how fuel efficient those big trucks can be!

I have a 2002 dodge ram 2500 deisel 5.9 , I have 7" pipe from the turbo to the back of the bed with stacks , I love it , so fuel efficient and a smarty chip , industrial injection hot rod injector pump and injector 200 hp above stock , love it love it

Global supply and demand for diesel fuel is something to watch with Europe already straining to keep up with demand. Sanctions on Russia are having major fuel production ramifications. More than one analyst saying we will see rationing on diesel and stock outs (pumps running out of fuel). Something to consider if planning on buying diesel powered vehicles. I drove my RAM 2500 Diesel Laramie from Orlando to Richmond Va and back a few weeks ago. Not hauling anything and driving 80+ when possible. Total trip average? 21 MPG. I was amazed
Wild eh, I can't believe how efficient these diesels are while still having aftertreatment systems on them. which also mean that they are polluting much less then a gas engine at the same time.
How far did one tank get you during your trip?
@@JFND2008 I think it’s a 35 gallon tank? It was about 800 miles each was so I’d start looking for best price gas between 1/2 and 1/3 tank remaining.

Looking to trade in due to other reasons
I have a '97 Dodge 5.9 l Cummins, 5-speed manual, which did get 24 mpg when it had the original 215 hp.
Now with over 500K miles on the untouched engine having 300+ hp, I still get close to 22 mpg on good day and if I play with the pedal a bit it goes down to ~ 20 mpg.
I have burned one starter and had to replace the shut off solenoid once and the only problem now is an oil leak in the left side of the engine and yes, it runs like the devil!
I still got mine. 2 starters and 1 alternator. Pulled cattle trailer all over at 18mpg. Had the fuel heater right above the starter melt causing it to lose fuel prime on shutoff. Fixed that and it’s bullet proof.
Here in the states even with gas breaking over $4 a gallon, the demands are still insane with no sight of slowing down

Great comparison!!! Where I am at the Cummins option is a $20000 tick in the price. That's a big price to overcome. $20000 is still a lot of gas even at these prices.
ohhhhh ya. that up front cost is tough. As well as additional cost of maintenance! but putting money aside it is cool that a diesel runs so much more efficiently then a gas engine

Yea... right. If I drive my 2022 just right, I can too can get 21-22mpg.. on mostly level highway. I could get that with my 2012 Ford 6.7 powerstroke. But when I pull my 2021 Grand Design fifth-wheel camper (just 10,400 lbs), it drops dramatically to 8.5 average mpg, which is horrible. My old Ford averaged 12-12.5 pulling the same camper!
I drove 600 whatever miles round trip and got a best of 15.1mpg in my 2022 6.4L. I babied it and used cruise control. Has 1200 miles on it now.
19.5 mpg not towing thru first complete Wyoming winter with new 2022 2500 Cummins 4x4 crew cab long bed. 13 mpg towing. Has never ever gone thru regen cycle in almost 17k miles. They’ve got the emissions thing figured out now. Instant start at -15f. 50 gallon tank. The only negative is Uconnect is almost unusable around town. It has trouble maintaining link to phone.

I run a Ram dually Cummins. Love the diesels. Even went with the diesel in my BMW X5. That thing was amazing on fuel. People always complain about the upfront cost but you need to think of it as an investment. You pay an extra 10 grand up front but you will see the return when you sell it. Gotta think if it as a free upgrade. Just gotta take care of it.

Diesel is $1 more per gallon. DEF, way more expensive oil changes, DPF crap, fuel filters. The cost of maintenance washes away any savings in fuel
yes a diesel should hold it's value but you are right you have to look at it as an investment.

@@michaellarrick8881 How much do you spend on an oil change and what is the oil change interval? Regulated DPF is $15 for 2.5 gallons at Wally world. 2.5 gallons lasts 2000 miles. Or about less than $6 a tank of fuel.
My oil change every 10k(full synthetic) is $99 and fuel filter change is high end ($140) , my average fill up was $83, now $105ish, DPF is $6 a gallon
Per mile for my diesel: $.251418
Per mile for a power wagon, oil change adjusted for 10k miles (1.3 times) and fuel for 10k at 14mpg: $.298
We have to even the playing field, so I used comparable oil, both being Valvoline and the pricing for $3.99 for gas and $4.99 for diesel. (Last time I was at the pump) (Also sorry, I love numbers)
The formula used is: price of fuel per gallon * 32 gallons * (10000/(mpg)*gallons)+oil change and then for the diesel + fuel filter
Great video. The price of diesel here in WA today is about 76 cents more than gas. To make it an easier comparison for Canadians: diesel is +14.2% higher priced than gas. Considering the cost of DEF, the type of driving you do, how many annual miles, if you tow… a diesel truck might save you money on a long enough timeline, even with the higher maintenance costs. We could mention higher resale of diesel vs gas, but a Power Wagon should hold onto resale better than a typical 2500 gas. 🙂🤘I’m not die hard for one or the other. Just wish I could own both.

@HalfShell Mmm. Let's see, with the amount of driving I do, including city which I get 15.7mpg in. I fill up once per week unless I go on vacation (8ish hours away).
With my past month of driving, I would have saved $165 driving the gasser. I would not have anywhere near the torque I currently do. But fair.
$165 for 250,000 miles, so I drive 40k a year. That will be 6.25 years. At that point, most gassers talk about replacing their engine or truck because of failures. And my engine is considered finally broken in.
So now, I don't have to buy another 50-70k truck. And my deficit is less. Actually, an entire vehicle less. But $165 * 12 * 6.25 is $12,375. But we haven't even talked about towing savings or resale value.
Towing: 8mpg (gas) vs 14-16(15) mpg (diesel). The gasser is now losing $182 per month vs the diesel.
If you need a vehicle for now and know you are going to trade it in, in less than 10 years, you're right. But if you expect to keep the vehicle after your payments are done and tow with it, you'd be a fool to get the gasser.
Also, you are forgetting the psychological side of this. You see your fuel price and miles more than you see your monthly payment. It takes a gasser filling up twice to go the same distance as my diesel. So twice weekly.
But I'll also leave you with this: I got my truck for $69k. Selling price, the average power wagon at the same dealer went for $64k. Both at about 30k miles.
All of my calculations have been with a 15k difference. Handicapping the diesel.
I have 0 problem eating that 5k. Because I will not be rebuying a vehicle in 10 years. Unless it's electric and other policies go in place. I can also burn alternative fuels that a gasser cannot.

If you keep your 2500/RAM Power Wagon stock, you'll come out ahead. But do you really not want to mod your truck?
This is also with 35's K02's and no software mods, yet. Software mods on my diesel will change this entirely.

As the great mechanic CZcamsr the car wizard has said "if you use your truck to tow and haul payload every day to make money buy a diesel. If your using it for anything else it will cost you more than a gas truck"

I have sqeeked out 23mpg in my 2015 2500 Cummins. But the road has to be flat and my speed cannot rise above 70mph. Hills, increased speed, and a load will adjust mpg down from there. Towing 8k camper in East TN is 12.5mpg.
Your stated compression ratio of 16.2:1 is for the high output. The standard output which is in the 2500 is actually 19:1. Would like to see if there’s much difference in fuel economy between high output and standard output.
that is a very good question. I'm not honestly sure, but I'm hoping to get a HO cummins on the channel eventually and go over all the differences

2016 Ram 2500 4x4 Cummings drove from KCK to South Louisiana and averaged around 20mpg
My 2021 2500 Laramie Averaged 17.5 MPG from Houston Tx to Imperial CA. Minimum 80mph in texas 75 AZ and California.

My 2018 cummins 3500 4x4 with G56 transmission gets just a smidgen over 20 mpg. I have a 4" lift with 37's. I drive like an old man though, so I rarely do over 70 mph.
Considering diesel is higher than petrol in the moment and you still have to add the def I think my 6.4 doing 11 mpg on 35s is ok. Plus less cost for maintenance. But I always been a big fan of the Cummins. Maybe my next truck would be a Cummins with a Carli suspension in 37s....lol.
To go the same distance, you spend about $89 more, including the DEF fluid which is about 7 dollars a tank. 1 gallon of def per tank is the average I've had so far. I've heard your comment many times and your comment made me finally do the math
The 6.4 is garbage and so is 11mpg and with these gas prices it's unaffordable to own one, I just sold mine in February, best decision i have ever made, I actually have money in the bank, now that it doesn't all go to gasoline, I will never buy one again, next truck will for sure be a diesel, no questions asked.

yup, I do drive my power wagon during the week anymore because of that. the wife drives it to work for a total of 32 miles a week. If I had to drive this truck to work everyday I would go broke.
I'm literally getting one of these guys, I love the look of the power wagon over night addition, but I travel 400 miles every weekend to pic up my child also I do not tow anything but I do eventually wanto yet a camper trailer but other than that that's it. I dont need any use of the diesel realistically but the gas mileage is wayyy better then the power wagon and not sure if it's worth it lol.
for a heavy duty truck they are efficient trucks. But with the price of diesel staying high while gas is coming down who knows if its still worth it. I'm actually going to be making a video about that soon.
Well the canadian litre is larger than the usa litre. But im prety sure they are all based on the us gallon.
I have a 2018 Cummins and only getting 16 liters per 100km best is 14.9 lifted 6 inches and 35 on 20 inch rims not sure if that's good or not
I have a 6.4 with 4.10 gears and it has a 190L tank. I use it for work. I fill up $340 on average with these prices in ontario. I get approx 650-700 km out of a tank ( city/ little highway). I also fill up every week. I am thinking of Trading this in and going for the 6.7. I feel like i’d save more money even though the diesel is more expensive. On average I’m speeding $1500 + on gas. Don’t make no sense. On 35s also 😭

Hello everyone, these trucks are very efficient but not from factory , i own a 2009 dodge ram 2500 6.7l with a six manual speed , emissions deleted egr delete ,smarty junior tuner set with the options i programmed , i get 25.5 mpg , never over 70mpg , i am very happy
Hey man I hope you cab answer my questions.. I've got a ram 2021 cummins crew cab 4x4 on 35 mud tires.. I use to get 10.2MPG towing a dump trailer around the city.. now it's delted fully and I am getting 13.2MPG everyone else gets 18mpg towing super heavy.. ( the truck doesn't roll coal at all)

What level on the Ezlink are you running while you're towing the dump trailer? The same set-up (USA truck), deleted, Ezlink tune (on #1 stock tune), hauling a 14k pound GVWR trailer, got 14.5mpg on a 100 mile trip with some highway, city, and hilly driving, hauling a 2500lb bundle of oak flooring. The 100 mi. empty trip home got about 16mpg.
I towed a 6000lb skid steer on #5 tune (didn't realize it at the time) for about 25 miles through the hills, and got about nine mpg.
I wonder if a roadmaster sleeper can go on a 2500 single cab?
@thegettyadventures you failed to mention one main reason rpm. Where the engines make power and run at. Hemi 4500-5500 vs Cummins 1500-1800rpm. Gas engines turn 2-3 times that of a diesel to make power. That plays a huge role in it.

I mean yes and no. the lower RPM is kind of of a cause of the things I mentioned. more energy in fuel plus better energy transfer into mechanical movement all means the diesel can stay at low rpms to make the same power. but you aren't wrong an engine that revs more is going to burn more fuel and usually a gas engine is on average at higher rpm.
but with the 8speed trans with the 6.4's it does keep the rpms low. I would say just driving normally I rarely go over 2400 rpm.
I guess when you are accelerating heavily the gas engine would obviously rev higher but during everyday driving I feel like the revs would probably be pretty close to each other

In December 2022, I bought a 2022 Ram 3500 with H.O. Cummins + AISIN transmission. Driving with a light foot the best mileage I get is between 13.9 to 15.3 MPG.
The computer always says it does more, i.e. 16.5mpg but the computer is NOT accurate, I always calculate it.
To all of you guys out there that own a H.O. Cummins with the AISIN transmission, what kind of MPG are you seeing? And are those calculated or computer MPG?
Sorry about your luck with the 2022 model ...I went 3rd Gen 2003, bought used with 80000Kms on the clock and with only one change over full bone stock being a muffler delete ..I get a steady 22 to 25 mpg here in the hills and mountains of southeast BC Canada ...note here that I have a heavy duty tall Leer "cap" on the box and carry a lot of gear in the box for roadside emergencies and a "bugout kit" just in case.

Diesel in Canada, at least as of last week was 10 cents cheaper than the cheapest gas we have here which is coded as 87. I did the math with the 3.0 L Eco-Diesel in contrast with the 3.6 L Pentastar and in despite of the Diesel engine having more expensive maintenances along with the DEF fluid still came greatly on top. Considering the extra 9k CAD Diesel engine price; After 70000 kms becomes a savings machine. red ! Great video ! Keep grinding 🎉
Thinking about getting a truck but maybe heavy duty is more than I need. Might be nice to get nearly 30mpg on a 3.0 duramax. I would think it would haul a car trailer with car

I had on 06 mega cab 5.9 h.o. with compound turbos on 35s and I would average 20+mph on highway..
The emissions system do rob that much, might be 5%. The big drawback is reliability, the diesel emissions equipment seems to keep making you visit the shop no matter which brand you buy.

You can't go off what the truck says. I promise if you get 22mpg its actually getting 18-19mpg. The boating accident got my truck too. Before it said i got 21-22 highway but i actually got 18 after calculating it based on mileage and fuel to replenish it.

So I did the calculation with original investment involved ($15000 USD difference and I also did a search in the area I got my truck from, a power wagon there, today sells for $62,700 with 16k miles.)
$15k USD difference:
Gas: 5.7
Diesel: 7.451418
Buy it currently in the same area:
Gas: 6.27
Diesel: 7.451418
This is interesting because technically, the per mile is gas, until the truck needed major repair. But the everyday to day fuel is no fun.
Without purchase included:
Gas: .298
Diesel: .251418
And remember, the more you fill up, the more the purchase price doesn't matter. Because you actively are seeing the fuel price, not your truck note everyday/week.

this is actually really interesting! I'm kind of neutral to the argument I just find it interesting which engine really is better bang for the buck. seems like if you can afford the diesel its worth it.

With this in mind and say you fill up 24 gallons per stop. (I fill up once a week).
And say about 2.5 gallons of DEF. ($15)
Diesel 4 (24 gallon) fill ups at 22mpg plus def: $660 (including the extra $166 for the loan)
Gas: 11mpg 2x (8 fill ups) diesel fill up (24 gallons): $766
Gas at 14 mpg 1.57x (6.28 full ups) 1 diesel fill up: $601
So if you maintain over 12-13 mpg, you are saving some money per month. Like $59...
However, that is assuming an average monthly mileage of: 2112 miles. You drive less, gas is better. You drive more, diesel is better. No matter the loan amount. I average 500 to 600 miles a week
The Cummins 5.9 common rail diesel engine in the third Gen is a powerhouse that will put to shame most gas burning pickups. A honest assement can be seen in my 2003 Laramie 3500 4x4..HO code BONE STOCK in all parameters (with one exception..muffler deleted).. giving me 22 to 25 MPG .. consider that I have a 500 pound cap plus a box full of "bugout" and roadside emerg items and operate in southeastern BC Canada..hill and mountain country. And the bonus is that with a low 154000 kms road time, the engine continues to "breakin" the fuel mpg goes up..... when I first took ownership of the truck at 80000 kms with zero load in or on the box, I was seeing 17 to 18 MPG .... so in conclusion ...the riper she gets the better Ilke her.

I was at 11mpg with my power wagon on 37s.
Same setup with the cummins is 18mpg.

Got 17.5 mpg on my 6.4 the other day on a 60 mile run. Of course, I wasn't in a hurry. If I am in a hurry anything over 12mpg is great.

I know I want bigger tires on my truck badly. I think I'd go 35's and wider. it was just weird like my drive to work is all back roads and I was averaging like 12 mpg. seemed really low.
@@TheGettyAdventures I’m on a bunch of power wagon groups on facebook and the general consensus on there is 10-12.5mpg around town. Yeah I popped one of my tires and was “forced” to buy a new set (at least that's what i told my girl lol). I would be very careful about going wider, these trucks can't take tires that are too wide. For example a set 35x12.50R17 goodyear duratrac will rub badly because they are too wide. Meanwhile, I'm running a set of 37x12.50R17 falken at3w and even though they are taller than what a set of 35 inch duratracs would be, they are technically skinnier and don’t rub like a set of 35 duratracs would (mine just barley, I mean barely, kisses the sway bar at full lock). Back to my original question, what mud flaps do you have on?

If EVERYTHING was equal, you would not save much money with a diesel. Especially if you add maintenance. I LOVE diesels, especially in smaller vehicles but 5-8 mpg difference in a HD truck compared to 15-20 mpg difference in a Jetta diesel? Not really worth it for the HD truck, unless you plan on driving the Cummins til the wheels fall off. Then, it is absolutely worth it.
I bought a 2021 F150 Powerboost over the Cummins only because I get 680 on 30 gallons and I drive it daily in town. I average 23 mpg and I can go 0-60 in 5 seconds flat. Looked at the Cummins but mpg wins
Hi Alex, I’m looking at a used 2022 2500 Laramie with Cummins. It has 20k miles on it. Would you have any concerns on the used engine and any recommendations on what to look for with the truck

🤷♂️ mine likes driving in between 2000-2500 rpm’s, from a stop, if I drive slow, rpm’s not rising above 2000, I see my mileage dip. If I stuff my foot in it, and get the rpm’s up above 2000-2500, it stays at 16-17 MPGs.
22 mpg not bad, they can get 24 mpg. Once you do a full delete, engine tune, trans tune, free spinning hubs and off road fuel you will see 34-36 mpg!! 👊👍

Their is a CZcamsr by the name of Iron Dark Diesel and he has a video of a lifted 2500 on 35's getting 29-30 mpg after being deleted and tuned.
2014 and onwards 2500s (and 2013+ 3500s) come with an electronic disconnecting front axle, free spin hubs not needed.
Once mine is no longer under warranty…

If your talking about the 2500 PW then yes they do. We are talking about the diesel 2500's and 3500's they do not have that. And do you know what free spinning hubs do? Or what they are?
So you're saying(not saying) that that 2500 diesel could conceivably get 30mpg maybe more!?...
if you rip that aftertreatment system off yes, you could probably get real close to 30mpg. which those front hubs to full un-locking hubs you might get above 30mpg lol
I have an 18 2500 with the 6.4. If I stay off the go pedal a little, I can get 14mpg.
While diesel gets better mpg, the price of diesel in my area is considerably higher priced.
While considering fuel efficiency, you should really look at the cost per mile...
I did the calculation for someone who gets 11 mpg. I get 22 on the hwy. You will spend $88 more to go the same distance. I did the calc with $3.99 gas and $4.99 diesel. Let me rerun it with 14 mpg and I will get back to you!
You pay $34 more than me currently to go the same distance.
a "normal" 6.4 with 3.73 gears will get better fuel mileage then my power wagon. but it does some down to cost per mile.
interesting calculations, I mean it would be interesting to put the upfront cost of ownership for a diesel into mix. in Canada right now it's about an extra 15k for the diesel.
@@TheGettyAdventures It would, however, I ignore the upfront cost due to the fact that people no matter the situation are going to spend money on certain luxuries. And some folks pay all up front. I am talking month to month, everyday money. Where things change on the daily.

That's why I love my Ram 3500. I get the same KMS per liter. My truck has 35" tires 3.73 gears, fully deleted and 8200 lbs with my ass in it.
ohhh I can imagine that. fully deleted units are probably incredibly fuel efficient. i heard of guys running a good tune with a delete and unlocking front hubs getting like 32-36mpg

You have to figure in the cost per gallon and the cost of fuel filters and oil changes for the Diesel Cummins also DEF Fluid about 5 dollars a Gallon and the Diesel Emissions are so tight now due to EPA requirement's on the new Diesels also if you delete one Fiat can lock the computer up so you can't clear any codes!! Been there Done That!! also when they run in the Regeneration Mode that drops MPG by 2 or 3 MPG and they run in Regen Mode a lot. Traded my 2020 2500 ( DODGE) Cummins for a 2022 2500 (DODGE) 6.4 Hemi>>No More Diesels for me.

that's the SRT version of the 6.4 hemi. the truck version of the 6.4 is a very different engine. built different from the ground up.
So.... the reason One Gallon of Diesel ⛽ Fuel gets better mileage than One Gallon of gasoline ⛽. Diesel has more BTU than gasoline ⛽
Diesel = 137,381 BTU
Gasoline = 120,238 BTU
Heating oil = 138,500 BTU
One Cord of Wood = 20,000,000 BTU
SO..... JUST carry a cord of wood 🪵 in the bed of your pick-up. Just throw some inside, like a old steam power Locomotive.

that's one factor yes but the main factor is the thermal efficiency of the diesel. it uses those BTU's much better then a gas engine mainly because of the high compression ratio.
Just think of ram got their crap together and gave us a 10 speed transmission and we could use a taller rear end.
Or even an 8 speed

welp you shoulda got the diesel, kiddo, if you already known that gas prices are out of control and that diesel does much better with double the fuel economy, why would you buy the 2022 hemi? seems kinda asinine dont you think, if I were you I'd take it back to the dealer to trade it for the diesel
diesel is now more expensive than gasoline, not to mention you have to add def now and a diesel engine is 5 to 7k more expensive off the lot… how people think they are saving money is laughable… 👏
it's interesting you say that because I have people saying the exact opposite how the 6.4 hemi is a waste of money compared to the 6.7. I honestly don't know the answer because you are right the price of diesel is crazy, in Canada it's an extra 12-14k at the time of purchase and the maintenance is much higher. but there is a higher re-sale value. whereas the 6.4 hemi is much less fuel efficient.
to me it all depends on what you need the truck for. if you are towing heavy the diesel is a great option.
