What is the BEST Fuel to Use in Your Car or Truck and WHY

- Ever wonder what grade gasoline should you use in your car (what octane)? Are you paying for premium gas when you can just use regular? Are you using regular and damaging your engine? This video will bust all of the myths and tell you the FACTS on what fuel you should use and why.
Many people throw money away and fill their car with the incorrect fuel every day. Running premium or midgrade in a car designed to run regular is a waste of money and has no HP or MPG benefits. You will not make more power or get better fuel economy running premium fuel if the car manufacturer tunes the car to use regular gas in most cases. I also see some people run regular gas in cars that need premium and the knock sensors have to adjust timing significantly to prevent damaging engine knock. I also hear a lot of people say that premium gasoline has more energy or burns cooler or slower so I will put a rest to all of these "myths" with facts.

Chris, what a great informative video. You covered all the bases, and it really shows how beneficial higher-octane fuels can be.... for vehicles that require or recommend them. Love the way you clarified the benefits for vehicles that 'recommend' higher octane. Perfect example: my 2021 Ford Edge St has a twin turbo v-6 (2.7 ecoboost). The service manual specifies that the engine will run fine with 87 (thanks to the knock sensors), but for optimum performance or under high load (towing a trailer) applications, premium is recommended. I definitely notice a performance benefit. Kudos to the knock sensors.
Also, how older vehicles with high mileage can benefit. Knocking and pinging from carbon hot spots can really do some damage over time. For those of us who know, not a good sound to hear!
I have found that Chevron Complete fuel system cleaner works awesome for cleaning carbon out of older engines.
Also appreciate the breakdown on fuel additives and additive packages added by the brand. Shell and Chevron both seem to go above and beyond when it comes to putting in more than just the minimum required. I'm sure there are others. Your video covers all the bases and it's truly well made. Thanks!

In Norway we have 95E10 and 98E5. 98 is actually ethanol free in Norway, but due to EU regulations we have to label the pumps with E5. The reason why we have 98 as ethanol free is because we have a lot of older cars that usually are parked during the winter. E10 is not good for older engines, and specially if the vehicle is parked during winter.
Now we are working on getting 98 into more stations, as more and more people use it.
Asia have almost the same standard, We have E20, Gasohol 91, G95 and pure 98.
E20 is 98 mixes with 20% Ethanol, G91 is your E10 and G95 is your E5.
I do believe that the more ethanol the less energy because ethanol have less energy that petrol.
@@MutheiM_MarzBut we only have Unleaded95 and Unleaded98. 95 has up to 10% ethanol, and 98 has no ethanol.
Lots of smaller petrolstations that had 95 and diesel have switched to 98 instead, as10% ethanol is too much for older cars.
My 1991 Toyota runs only on 98 octane with no ethanol added.
In my country a new petrol car usually go for E20 and G91 or 95 is for bike. Unleaded 98 is for the old car like yours. But we have another one, normal diesel and B10 which is 10% biodiesel. I have Hilux Mighty X gathering dust and daily driver Hilux Tiger.
In small station they must have B10 and 91 and 98. Government start to enforcing biodiesel and Ethanol mixes fuel.

I know from personal experience about Shell. I drive a Ford with a 3.0 engine which runs on any economy fuel. However my girlfriend has a 6 cylinder Jeep she bought new. She was having problems and the dealer told her it was the fuel pump which was "starting to go". This Jeep already had the transmission replaced at 3 months and head gasket at about a year. This was her work vehicle and they quoted 3-400 for a new fuel pump installed. He jeep was fuel sensitive, the additives used in our town didn't work too well, but the next town north(different distribution point) worked better. I suggested she try the Shell economy fuel, it was the same price or 2 cents more to see if there was a difference. She tried a tank and there was no difference, on the second tankful the problems went away. It ran better and her problem fuel pump lasted another 6 years. She still has it, going on 20 years and she had to stop using Shell, n stations around here anymore

Chrisfix is one of the few remaining large youtubers who seems like a small CZcamsr in how he interacts with the community. This dude responded to a comment on an 8 month old video to clarify for someone, top notch man.
ChrisFix Where in Europe was it filmed? Most countries have either 95/98 RON or 95/100 RON
Never seen 99 octane before lol
Here in germany some gasstations like "Aral" even offer 102 gasoline. It's called Aral ultimate 102, but not a single car on this planet can work with such a high number of octane. It's more about the additives it contains.
I use regular 95 octane but once in a while I use 98 octane with a bottle of injector cleaner and fuel system cleaner just to make sure everything works as it should. I had a problem with my engine getting extremely weakened and losing power but after the injector cleaner it runs smoothly and feels much more powerful and has much better acceleration now compared to before
Should I do this on my 2005 1.7L civic? It has 257,000 miles and try to run injector cleaner through it every now and then but not with premium as well
I have been doing exactly same thing for a long time and I agree using higher octane once in a cleans all the crap and vehicle feel freshly tuned up, but after watching this video I am confused if using higher octane than recommended could potentially hurt the engine.
@@ApexTrust You can't hurt your engine by using a higher-octane fuel, but if the engine is unable to utilize the higher-octane number, then you might be wasting money. Then again higher-octane fuels tend to have more fuel additives that can clean up your engine and help it stay cleaner. Using lower octane fuel than the engine is designed for, can hurt your engine, though. Also at least here in Europe, I think all the fuel has ethanol now, usually up to 5% in the higher-octane fuels (98e5) and up to 10% in the lower octane fuels (95e10) and ethanol has less energy by volume so you can get a bit more range with the higher-octane fuel, though most likely not enough to justify the higher price.
My current car definitely runs more smoothly and has significantly more range with higher-octane, lower ethanol fuel but then again, we are talking about a rather modern turbocharged direct injection engine here. For any small machinery (lawn mowers, chainsaws etc.) and motorcycles, I would never put higher-ethanol fuel, in fact fuel with no ethanol would be the best. I don't claim expertise in chemistry or mechanical engineering, though (I am an engineer, but an ICT one.) Always adhere to the recommendations of your engine manufacturer and expert mechanics.
Stop being cheap and you'll never have to do that😂😂
I use premium because i do not drive but maybe 150 miles a month. I use sta-bl fuel additive to save the life of fuel.
I do have higher use from time to time but 80% of the time is 150 or less miles. I bough a used ford explorer in 2012 with 197686 miles for $1000. It had not been taken care of. I fixed the problems it had. Front end comletely replaced. $575 in parts. Saved $1000. Drained all the fluids including the gas tank. Changed all the belts and hoses. Cleaned the fuel system, replaced all the bosch platinum plugs and wires. Fixed intake leak in gasket. Vacvumed car and washed it. Paint was in bad shape when i bought it. I stripped the paint and repainted with primer 5 coats and 4 coats of clear coat. I did it myself. I saved $1500 new tires and bought tire covers. The vehicle by blue book is not worth but $2000. But this Explorer is in better shape than most newly boight vehicles it gets 23 mpg and 14 city. Owners manual says its duppose to get 19 hwy and 11 in city.
If people would just take care of their vehicles they will last.
I don't have thousand of $ in tools either. I have good tools that are good enough for the job. If my parts are stress parts a bought better quality tools for those parts. I may have a $1000 in tools $400 just for a tool box to hold them. I do all my own repar work on both my vehicles my second carcis a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan bought for $2000 cash. It needed drivers sliding door repaired. Did it myself and saved $1100 dollars in repairs. New alternator save $ 525 in repairs good qualty tires saved $1500. Shop around. Deals are out here. Had TIMP defect from factory. Repaired it saved $1400 oil pump saved $400. Both vehicles run and drive like new.
I'm a chemist and have worked in a lab testing gasoline and diesel. This is for the protection of the consumers in our state. I'm pretty sure most states have a lab to do this. Most of the information in your video is correct and very useful. Thank you for making sure to emphasize the octane rating you see at the pump is NOT the energy content of the gas. It's all pretty much the same between 87 and 93, unless of course it has a higher percentage of ethanol (Uh can we say E-85? why would someone run this fuel 🙄). Ethanol will decrease the amount of energy in the gasoline, but it's added to make the gasoline burn cleaner and is good up to 10%.
Something you didn't emphasize enough though is what "octane rating" actually is. It is NOT the amount of octane in the gasoline. There is little to no octane actually in gasoline (octanes are eight carbon hydrocarbons). The octane rating is the "equivalent amount of octane" in the fuel so that will resists knocking as if it contained that percent of octane. Gasoline is mostly made up of mixtures of toluene, and xylenes. If you ran pure toluene as your gasoline, you'd be getting about a 110 octane rating, but this wouldn't necessarily be good for your engine.
When gasoline is made, the manufacturers control the mixture of hydrocarbons to get a clean burn and the proper vapor pressure (vapor pressure is the pressure of the vaporized gas above the liquid, not to be confused with the engine pressure). Also the gasoline must be protected from oxidation (this is why you add fuel stabilizer when storing for a long time) and contamination like water or particulates. Every brand of gasoline has slightly different proprietary ingredients to do this (as you've said at about 6 minutes). Also, the time of year will dictate what vapor pressure the gasoline manufacturers must make the gasoline to deliver to the consumer.
Forget octane boosters. A pint of octane booster won't raise the octane rating of a full tank of fuel enough to make a difference. If you have a high performance engine that's been engineered for high compression, you're going to know you need a higher octane rated fuel. You aren't going to hit that 87 button. Are you?🤔 By the way, most mid-grade pumps, mix (in the pump itself) two parts of 87 with one part of 93 to get 89. But if you look at the price per gallon, they usually give you the "mid-price" between 87 and 93 for the 89. You'd be better off cost wise, by pumping 10 gallons of 87 and 5 gallons of 93 if you really want 89. I suppose mixing it well enough in the tank might be problematic for the first few miles. Really, you didn't need the 89 anyways.
Octane Rating Tests Explained:
One more thing you didn't explain well was how we get the octane rating in the USA. Yes RON stands for Research Octane Number. It refers to an actual test engine and ASTM method D-2699 for testing the octane rating of spark ignition fuels. My lab uses a RON called a Waukesha RON engine. It varies the compression of the cylinder to make the fuel knock while holding other variables at constant values (temperature, fuel/air mix, engine speed, etc). There is another test engine my lab uses, it's called a MON or Motor Octane Number engine and ASTM method D-2700. It too is a Waukesha engine that varies the compression of the cylinder but holds those variables at different values, mostly the engine speed is faster on the MON (900 rpm instead of the RON's 600 rpm), but I believe the inlet temperature of the RON is also kept higher. The RON and MON tests give slightly different results for octane rating due to the differences in these other variables. MON is always lower than the RON, by about 10 octane ratings if I remember correctly. In the USA, when you see the (R + M)/2 on the pump's octane rating label, it's telling you that the gasoline is rated by testing by both the RON and MON methods, and the final number you get is the average of the two test results. I rarely hear this average referred to as "PON", but I know it's not PUMP Octane Number. I had to look that up and if you want to trust Wikipedia it stands for "Posted Octane Number". In Europe, they only test with the RON method, as you've said, so this is why their octane ratings are higher. They don't have the lower MON test averaged into their octane rating.
Great information in your video for all consumers. I gave it a thumbs up. 👍
How could a person consume toluene? Is it contained in alcohol?
Premium is the best but it cost more I used to haul gas they told us not to drop gas at the premium had more than one in our or 1 inch or less of water and regular could have over 3in and more trash in it you get more trash and water and regular than you do premium cuz we had to go pump the tanks

Can you do a video on supermarket fuel vs branded fuel. Because I was running asda supermarket fuel and even though it was the cheapest option in my area I realised that my fuel was running out quickly in comparison to shell fuel even though I'm technically getting less fuel for my money with shell.... And also I noticed on a different occasion that after running tesco momentum 99 supermarket fuel after about three tanks my engine started to sound a bit rough, but after returning back to shell fuel my engine became much smoother again... So I know that supermarket fuel is definitely not as good as branded fuel... Would you do a video on that...?
@@idiotamerica6422 awesome!!! glad to see chris where he should be!
The answer is simple:
Use the grade of gasoline recommended in your vehicle's manual.
@em745a That's a Mazda owner's secret man. Not like anyone is gonna believe you even though it's true.
Usually it will say it on your gas lid. If anyone cared.... They should read it haha. Put people don't even know how to check oil levels 😅😅
Just cause it days in the manual doesn't mean its true. 2007 thru 2010 have coilpack issues and spark plugs that fail prematurely when ran on 87 octane. I had 3 denso coilpacks fail at 90k. I replaced the coilpacks and put new ngk spark plugs at 90k. At 112k i had 2 more coilpacks fail and 1 spark plug fail. The honda dealership recommended that i run premium and run lucas fuel treatment. Ive been running premium for over a year now. The car runs 10x better, no lagging, also it gets 5 to 7 mpg better. Lastly some gas stations have shitty gas like bp and certified. Smh
@@honda-s2k how about other mazdas that have double your mileage and never had any of those failures by using 87?
there isn't a coil issue, spark plugs last longer than the recommended 75k miles interval...
i'm also skeptical about any better fuel mileage. it's not like premium gas has extra energy (i may have extra detergents but no real 'energy bust')
@em745a I wonder how that's gonna be with the skyactive x engine that wants to run like a diesel... might Require lower octane to run right
Excellent video. So grateful where i live i can get minimum 90 octane non ethanol gas. Love running the pure gas through my car. More expensive yes. Worth it yes. Put quality fuel system cleaner in once a month and the engine just purrs on down the road.
It literally depends on the vehicle you have. The only car I've ever had where you could tell the octane made a noticable difference was a 2017 Sr turbo nissan sentra and it picked up a few ponies with 91 octane no doubt. That might be true of all turbo/supercharged cars and unless the vehicle is tuned for the fuel, it'll only be a small difference but will burn cleaner.
I'd say any car that has a 4cyl or 6 banger with 300hp should use 91, and any v8 over 350hp should use 91, especially since those hp nunbers say you have a $40K+ car, why settle for less?
My first car out of high school was a built 87 Lx mustang converted to mass air and had a gt40 crate motor from ford with all the goodies and it was tuned for 91 so I always used it, of course this was in 2005 when even 100 octane was only $5gal. I ended up putting a low compression 331 stroker in it but it was untuned so I ran it at just under 30 degrees of timing and it loved the 91. The 100 octane didn't help much because it was built for boost with such low compression soo when I was low on funds or was going on a long drive, I would bump the timing down and put 87 in it and it wouldn't run funny.
This guy made me read the owner’s manual of my car.
Lol I always read the manuals from cover to cove. 3 cars and I always knew tire size, octane required, lifting points, and even extra tricks/buttons on my vehicle.
Chris: read onwers manual gasp the car is a ev how did I not know
I have no idea where my car’s manual is 😂
Good! Lots of great info in there!

Shell: Turns into Speedway
Speedway is Better
That’s like my town except with Mobil. They were here for 2 years and one night they switched to speedway. Now I go to shell to fill up.
They didnt turn into speedway, what are you talking about. The shell gas stations near me are still shell.

Well done! @chrisfix I love all your videos!! I have a 1972 ford v8. Should I run a “ lead substitute “ in regular octane? Or should I run 93 ? Or…!

Chris: *that is completely false*
Shell: bruh...
@silverbird58 that for a big part is because it doen't contain any ethanol
@@Badewannensalz thats for cars that are premium recommended
Shell 93 is the worst 93 I've ever gotten. Tried 2 different stations same result tons of knock and timing being pulled. Sunoco was better but not great. Mobil is the only 93 I could run on my tune without pulling timing. Handheld tuners with real time data logging pay for themselves.

Yup - RTFM is always the best answer
As a KIA mechanic around early 2000, there were many pinging issues here in the south. Fuel door claimed “87” but they needed 89 octane to prevent knocking… at least that was how well they built them for the US then.
I use mid-grade for my car that does not require higher octane. It has run great for 15 years and still like new. So, it cannot hurt. But, I imagine it could hurt if you use lower octane and maybe be on a border-line between the good burning and knock-burning. Also, in order to get higher octane, cleaning additives are added. So, high octane should = cleaner fuel injectors.
My Merc, at the end of its time, was blowing smoke and spitting black sludge on the ground. I was told this resulted from use of Shell VP and its additives.
@@rogeredwarrddeshon5000 i think they lied to you.i have used shell midgrade all its 15 year life.

“Now at the gas pumps there’s a bunch of different choices...”
Diesel owners: I only have 1 choice.
yes, but in europe/germany you have sometimes different choices, but I dont know if the differences are that big
@@JSK1011 yes there is a difference. Some fuel stations offer better diesel quality and I tested it myself. There are 5-6gas stations in my city and I always fill my car at one specific gas station because they offer a fantastic fuel. When I fill a full tank (volkswagen mk4 1.9 tdi) I can make 1,200kms and when I do that at other gas stations I can only do a little bit over 900 so there is a difference in dieseles in different stations.

Right you are . I like to think of it like this , higher octane is more resistance to burn and lower octane is less resistance. Aircraft engines using 100LL have pre igniters for the fuel called SHOWER OF SPARKS . Lot of chemistry involved that the average person does not know. Makes life more interesting for gear heads like us .

@@jarrettbellboy Buy the Diesel expansion today!
Tell us about the 85 octane we have in high altitude areas. I have heard that this was to compensate for the lower atmospheric pressure, which results in less compression in the cylinder, and thus less tendency for knock. But I also heard that this was first done in the days of carbureted engines, and these days nearly all engines are fuel injected. The car manuals all say to use at least 87 octane. Do we really need that higher octane at a mile high or not these days?
Excellent and comprehensive video. Thank you.

Your explanation is very helpful and understandable.
It reminds me about a Honda Civic I bought and the motor was shacking and they’ve never been able to fix it. They told me that they never fixed motors, they were changing them instead because they rarely had problems with motors. In the end, I tried Gold instead of Regular and the motor was almost not shaking. When I changed it 2 1/2 years later, I gave it with a fill tank. 2-3 weeks later the guy who bought it called me and asked if it was normally shaking 😅 he filled it up with Regular at his first visit to the gaz station. I told him I always used Gold… It was in the 90s and one of their mechanics once told me that even Honda had lemons and they didn’t know how to fix them :-). True story… it was a 93 I think
