Thanks a lot!
@Green Giant you have a twisted way of viewing standard business practices. You ALWAYS should try to get the cheaper price on goods and services if at all possible. Used cars come with risks of internal parts going kaputz. As long as the seller was satisfied with the deal - that's all the hell that matters. The only Class B guy here dude is you. If you talk me down on a price and I agree to it - I'm not being ripped off or bled. If I'm not happy with an offer, I don't have to accept. Same thing with Frank dealing with Chris. Frank agreed - so why are you pissed off? Keep in mind., Frank was not mentally deficient.
@Green Giant oh boo-hoo. You totally hurt my feelings. LOL. You're butt-hurt because you live in a child's fairy-tale land. Just to clarify - that place is in your head. When you shop groceries - surely you go the most expensive store available because all those other stores are just cutting the throats of honest businessmen? Same thing with medicine? Grow up son. Grow up. You should stop acting like a backward 12 year old.
@Green Giant I had no idea I was talking to Bill Gates himself! What an honor to meet you sir! Forgive me for my not realizing that you alone are the sole authority on business dealings. Dumb ash. I'm sure you're a wizard at finances. Which explains why you waste your time on this CZcams channel, talking to a lowely person you consider beneath you. That almost makes me believe you really are Bill Gates. Bwahahahaa! Trust me. I dont feel the least inferior to losers like yourself. Goodbye - have a good day convincing yourself how much better you are than anyone else. Its time I run along now. I hear your mommy calling you and I dont want to get you in trouble. Cya!

SegaDisneyUniverse dont worry man just detail the car regularly and check all fluids are ok
SegaDisneyUniverse maintenance is key listen to your car when your car tells you it needs something it needs it
Especially blink fluid and return piston springs!
I've learnt a lot of this from growing up driving only used cars and my father, but there is definitely a handful of things I specifically learned outside of that which is covered here. Thank you very much for the video.
Chris, I love your posts. One additional item to add to your inspection check list. Run you finger up as far as you can to feel for excessive “dirt”. Excess dirt is alway found in flooded vehicles. I have been using this video series to help my son find a good cash car. It has been super valuable, great time spent with my son instructing him on the process and helping him feel comfortable taking his time and not jumping at the first thing that he looks at. My takeaways in order:
1. The process of determining the value of a car PRIOR to seeing the car might the best part of this series.
2. Finding all the things that are wrong, and determining if they are more trouble than they are worth. If not, factor the repairs into the negotiation. Seems obvious, but I didn't do that in the past.
3. Knowing what you are willing to spend, and walking away if you cannot agree on that price.
I had one observation of the ChrisFix checklist. I didn't see a place to write the mileage. Maybe I missed it. But having that recorded prior to seeing the car was helpful in one case where the car's mileage was meaningfully different from the listing (around 12,000 mi different). I don't know that I would have noticed otherwise.
We haven't found the right deal yet, but thanks to this series, we feel like "pros," which gives us confidence.
I'm glad you've taken all that away from this series! And I would write the milage down in the margin next to the car info section

Hey ChrisFix. I just wanna thank you for helping me buy a used car. I bought a 97 Honda Civic coupe back in November and used some of your used car buying techniques. The car is a little rough cosmetically and it’s leaking a bit of oil in the oil pan but that ain’t a big deal cuz I can work with that. This and the Del Sol video really helped me out
Both Frank and Chris are to be appreciated for their frank and honest talk.
Thanks both of you, more so Chris fix.
Here is an update for everyone:
-Frank was compensated for letting me film. I fixed his other car and saved him over $600. I did this because he was great with letting me film the video.
-I thought I made it clear but for those who are confused, this car is worth $2500 with no problems, it needs $1200+ in work to make it safe to drive, so a $1900 offer is more than fair (and he had many people check the car and not even get an offer because of the bad shape the car was in). A dealer would have given him $800 for a trade in if they even took it at all.
-For those of you saying, "I would have just given him the extra $100" you are missing the point. If you give the person even more money than the car is worth, you are getting taken advantage of. No one is forcing the owner to sell the car to me, he agreed to the deal. If he didnt want to sell it, he didnt have to sell it.
-Hopefully that clears somethings up for those who are confused! Hopefully the series was helpful!
+ChrisFix yeah that's true, actually he tried to lowball you, when you went with the price down he said ohh but you said that you loved the car. He tried to play with your mind but in the end you played with him. Because this is how things go, I did once a mistake when buying my first car, total dumbass at 19 years xDDD and since that I've learned the lesson.
+intoSmartphones Toderici exactly!
+ChrisFix Cool thanks for your honesty. I was wondering if he was given any kind of compensation for letting you film. I guess that makes sense and that might have influenced his selling price in the end slightly. I think one of the best things about these luxury cars that if they are still in decent shape is knowing that someone previously probably paid around 30-40K for the same car you are now enjoying at just a fraction of that amount.
+ChrisFix the series was really helpful indeed! After having my dad buy a car that needed a LOT of work for way more money than it was worth, with this guide I'm sure that won't happen again, hopefully :D So thanks a lot, and congratz for your Jaguar :)

Rule of buying anything thing used, "Don't Be Afraid to Walk Away!". If a seller knows your not emotionally invested in buying their car they are more likely to take a lower offer, and sellers normally price higher than they are willing to take.

You've just blown my mind. Now I'm just a vegetable.
Most car shoppers get too emotional about the product, imagining themselves driving it around town, telling their family and friends, thinking how cool they will look in it, etc...As hard as it is to do, you have to be emotionally detached and willing to walk away. Chris did just that. Great job! That's how you do it!
Robert Henry I made this mistake. My brother was much more focused than I was. But I have to admit, I was emotionally into it sadly for my first time.
Good advice although my last two cars were a long distance away from where I live, so the expense of getting there meant I had to cross my fingers and hope the cars were good enough to buy and drive home.
Well that's the main selling strategy. To sell a dream rather than just a product. You should check this out: czcams.com/video/48HDFXFe4QI/video.html
Emotions play a huge role in the sales process. Some people will avoid a test drive all together to avoid this, but I don't recommend it, as you should ALWAYS test drive a vehicle before purchasing. And technically you want to buy a car you CAN be emotionally attached to, just don't let that play a role in your negotiating.
I agree my first time I was sad about not getting the car I want but eventually I got a better one !
I can't thank you enough this series of videos, I just bought my first manual car, thank you chris, love ya :)

mareczek00713 well he can’t set it at $2k otherwise they offer $1k
Exactly. I do the same at times with stuff sell. Either I go hard with a low price and make it clear that it is the final price or I mark it up to be able to find a resonable price after a negotiation.
they are trying to do better than trade-in value. chrisfix probably knows that too. and the guy mentioned he's shown it to a few other people, that's a mistake. shoulda kept it to himself.
he's doing the work of a dealer and didn't make much more.. the miles sound bad and hard to find people that want to fix up an old car though
SHHHH!!!!!
Good that someone understands... so sick of seeing these comments of ppl going “uuhhhh the negotiating made me cringe uhhhb”
Chris, great job on this. I'm actually test driving several potential cars right now, and I would personally add these additions to the test drive:
(1) Practice backing the car up! Get a sense for how well you can visualize your surroundings (especially if it doesn't have a rear camera). Also, since I drive a standard, I want to make sure the reverse gear is distinct from the others. I drove a nice car where reverse & 1st gear were too close for comfort, and rejected it on that basis.
(2) If possible, ascend a steep hill. Does the car struggle? How does the transmission respond under the stress?
(3) Deliberately go over a rough patch or hit a small bump (informing the owner in advance this is a test). Or if you pass by an unpaved road or dirt parking lot, ask if you can take a brief detour there. Get a sense of how it absorbs the bumps, and feels on a less-than-ideal road.
(4) You may have done this without specifically mentioning it, but I politely ask the owner for some intentional moments of non-conversation, specifically to listen to the car. Get a sense for wind/road noise, rattles/squeaks, or anything about the engine that doesn't sound pleasing. Then pick up the conversation again.
Some of the owners actually complemented me for being so thorough. It communicated that I was taking the test drive (and therefore the car) seriously, and I think that was a good unspoken message to convey.
Hope your readers find this helpful.

Great video man, nice that we have somebody like you who provides useful tips!
Just want to comment on your negotiating, you demonstrated the biggest advantage you have as the buyer: never be afraid to walk away. It works even better at a dealership since they're likely under much more pressure to sell than a private owner.
Absolutely!
But at a dealership; there are more cost about the car, right ?
@@princeakilesh4881 So I've been doing a lot of studying on buying cars from dealerships and yes, Dealerships will try to put on a _lot_ of 'add-ons' and 'fees' to jack their prices up. You can tell them *NO* to any add-ons, and most, if not ALL of the fees they add are straight-up bogus.
My advice would be to settle on a fair price in your budget, then, if they try to add any fees to make you pay more, tell them "I'll pay those fees if you take the amount of them off the price of the car". Not 100% sure if it'd work, but it lets them know you're adamant about sticking to your guns and if they don't agree, stand up, shake their hand and say "Adios" 😂 (just kidding, but be sure to let them know you're not afraid of walking away. That puts extra pressure on them to sell at _your_ price, not theirs)

This entire series is great information. I wish I would have watched this before buying my previous used car. I dare say you can even use these tips when going to a dealership. I bought a Nissan Almera with a 100 problem for 1300
I feel realy bad
Well a Ford will run for more than a week...
Pick up a used jag in england for a grand all day long
How I negotiate when buying:
Me: How much is it?
Them: $amount
Me: Okay. *pays $amount*
this is so sad its basically me even though i never did negotiate i can imagine myself doing it
The Blitz same
That is you who are trying to buy a car from a grocery store.
@Jason H actually it goes a bit like this, maybe you can call this negotiating a bit:
Me:how much is it?
Them: $
Me: can it be lower?
Them: no
Me: pays amount
@@theblitz1687 another respectful way to ask is simply "are you firm on the price?"
if you notice problems and they won't come down than either take it or walk away simple as that.
if you DON'T notice problems and they won't come down than fair enough.
I almost got tricked into buying a 2005 station wagon for more than i got my 2009 turbocharged car for, so make a smart choice.
"*sighs* i can go 21" Chris: That-That's still a bit too high . BROOO I WOULD TAKE THAT OFFER IN A BREATH
Meanwhile he bought it for $200 less than you lmao
Hey man, just wanted to say, you’ve really inspired me to get into mechanics! Best channel ever!
You don't want to insult the owner.(Owner asking 3000$)
Chris- yeah i need to replace the wheels, 1500.
Rick from pawn stars would be proud.
That's not a lowball. He outlined what it would take to fix the car, which would be over $1200. Not to mention, he didn't even talk about what it'll take to fix the back sensor as well as the front bumper. If the car was in tip top shape it would be $2500, but it wasn't that at all. So, if we assume $2500 is the standard trade in, taking off $1200 for all the things he'll need to fix would be $1300. $1500>$1300, so Chris actually gave a pretty good offer. Definitely on the lower side, but not a lowball at all
considering how willing the owner was to drop down the price after a couple of tries, 3k was a highball
3Runner95SRB jg
In my opinion Chris gotta good deal 👍
3Runner95SRB lmfao
Just because it’s a luxury car doesn’t mean it’s automatically worth thousands.. people forget that these parts are expensive, & the trade in value was already 2500 at max. 2000 is actually very reasonable in this case. this is how you negotiate.
Thanks Nicole! Im glad you get it!
ChrisFix Of course. Used to own a 99 xj8, so I know! 😭
whats yo snap 🥺

You’re pretty ❤️
thank you so much for the check list, im going for a test drive tomorrow, ill be using this check list; WHICH IS AMAZING!! if I like it I will be using this negotiation method, saved my life
Awesome! Let me know how it goes!
Fun to see that you are making a video with the Jaguar X Type which was the first car I did buy. I also had the 2,5 litre with automatic transmission.
It did unfortunately get scrapped after only 2 years because of a lot of rust damage. The car jack fell trough the car because the metal was eaten up by the rust which left the car with a huge crack that went all the way from the front wheels to the back wheels.
I lost 8000 usd on that car because I did get the transmission flushed at the Jaguar dealership, changed spark plugs, battery and got new winter tires and summer tires.
The only thing I have left is the winter tires which does not fit my new car and I can't even get rid off them for a reasonable amount.
Got an Jaguar XF 3,0D Portfolio twin turbo with Arden tuning as my 2nd car now and I am praying that it will last me a lot longer this time. Atleast it's been maintained properly by the previous owners and had a major service only 1 year before I got it where the car got 2 new turbos and quite a bit more work was done.
I am really considering getting a cheaper electric car the next time because these cars are draining my wallet really quickly even though I love Jaguar as a brand 😟
I am only earning slighly more than minimum wage so I think many people can actually afford if they don't spend money on smoking, alcohol, partying and things like that. It all depends on what is prioritized and which hobbies people have.
Just giving the owner of the car a class on inspecting his own car
Hi
Legit died of Laughter listening to Chris drop to $1500 and Frank's soul dying when he agreed for $1900
This series will help out tremendously. And thank you infinitely - your channel overall is a godsend
Now Chris i have to admit I was a little skeptical as far as what I thought you might have been able to teach me but ill be the first to admit it was an excellent video. You earned a sub.
"I wont go above 2k, I'm really firm at that 1900" wtf is wrong with you 😂😂
That’s how negotiation works. That’s what it’s worth, and they both eventually agreed. There’s nothing wrong with him.
@@wakewind4129 The point is, Chris basically said he would pay $2k when he made that statement. Frank should have reminded him of that.
Bill C No, he said _Around_ $2000. $1900 was a perfect representation of what it was worth. Any higher and he would have been taken advantage of, breaking the video guide.
And since this was a video series in which case he technically used more of Frank’s time, Chris compensated him $600 in repairs that was entirely exclusive from the video guide. This series is representative of how buying a used car _Should_ be.
Yeah first he said most I can do is $2k, then changes it to $1900. Wth.
This man is a professional finneser
I will do 2 grand. No I want 1.9k... like c'mon now. It's 100 bucks...
Alexis Mandelias its more about the feeling than the money, I do these things to
100 bucks can do a lot for you. You must not understand the importance of money
@@diablotry5447 compared to 2000 bucks, 100 is insignificant. If you want to buy something that costs 20$, a 10$ increase is a lot. However, of you want to buy something that costs 1000$, the same 10$ is a negligible amount to pay
@@alexismandelias 100 bucks is 100 bucks, regardless of context.
@@diablotry5447 if you are buying a 2000$ car (+ all the costs for repairs) it means that you can actually afford to pay this amount. Since you are willing to spend 3k+ on a car, the 100$ shouldn't make much of a difference. To put it in other words, for a poor man 100$ is his weekly salary. For a rich man, 100$ is what his child gets weekly to spend. The context matters. If I offered you 5$ you will, most likely, be like "meh". If I offered the same 5$ to a homeless man he would be extremely grateful.
Thank you so much! As someone that knows NOTHING about cars, this was extremely helpful for buying my car!
Hi Chris! I just want to say thanks for all the advice because I just bought an e46 320i with £1300 in near perfect condition and I am very happy with it.
This was helpful, thank you. Actually you paid $1900 cash + $600 in repairs or $2500. You made sure he did pretty well as well. Maybe not in cash but through other services as well. Good negotiating!
Exactly and thanks!
Frank: $3000
Me: I will pay you $2000 right now
Frank: $2950 and it's yours
Me: ok *hands over cheque* 😭😭😭
Lmaoo
Awsome video chris, Got to learn alot from you, Keep Up💪🏽💜
Thank you soo much for this videos. I‘ll do my drivers license soon and you made me fall in love with cars again. I will definetly take your advice for buying my first car. I even thought about buying a car that I can only get back and forth with your tutorials. But don't worry my brother is a mechanic and he would check it again.
Thanks again for all your great videos😊
Thanks a lot!
I feel like 2,000 was reasonable. He seemed really desperate
yeah especially considering Chris has a successful yt channel and would earn a bit of coin with adsense and all. I feel like with buying and selling cars a small bit of empathy in the interaction doesn't hurt. I would have accepted 2k.
but still, he lied about having more people coming. that's the only reason he waited until the very end to say that he agree
he didn't lie maybe he was telling the truth but trust me after a few offers u just want it over with .
Dylan Smith He was choosing to sell the car. It's called negotiating. And he did an EXCELLENT job.
Why does it matter what Chris's occupation is? Purchasing an item is purchasing an item, the number isn't arbitrary. Would $2100 be reasonable? Up to you. But 1900 is still lower than 2000 and that's how negotiating works. Having an even round number isn't worth $100.
Gotta love the people on craigslist who will post a 1996 Honda Accord base with 250,000 miles, asking $5500. lol.....
Don't forget the bondo and rust spots.
+Mozzie yeah... i've seen worse. 1998 honda crv with 390k miles (original engine and transmission) with a little too many dents (not anything minor either) and the owner is asking $3k lol. i have to say though, basically 400k miles is impressive
5 500 $ is way too much. Still, it's better than a 2003 Jaguar with 130 000 miles... But then again, pretty much anything is better than that.
Or when people have a Subaru STI with over 100k miles asking for $16k+
2003 jag with 130k.....in canada this car would easily be worth 5k.
Thank you chris. I just bought a 97 Toyota avalon with 73k miles and used your videos as tips on what to look out for. Thankfully it was in a good condition and I was able to get it for a good deal as well!
How much did you buy it fo ?
Tks Frank! Really appreciate you letting him help us out 👍👍👍

The problem is I feel awkward while bargaining
Don't feel awkward! When you know exactly what you want to get out of negotiating for a car, just focus on that and you'll make it happen!
@@chrisfix that's motivating thank you
Sree I used to be uncomfortable negotiating too. Once you do it a few times you become a lot better at it.
@@chrisfix Wow, that's a great support from you.
Hopefully I learnt and can apply this technique about negotiating for a used car.
@@chrisfix true that. I’m so awkward and passive aggressive but in the end it’s either they move on to another buyer and forget you or you have a new cheap car
I used the negotiation tips to buy a used PC for 25% cheaper! Will see how it works out for a car in the future.
Awesome! Let me know how it goes when you get a car!
How'd it go?
How did it go?
Did the ABS engage when you did a hard stop?
how was the computer's suspension?
YOU DA MAN! I just looked at a 2008 TSX. I thought I did a good job looking over it but after watching your vids I missed a lot. I did catch some things that I did not like: not inspected, rust in the trunk, mis-aligned hood panel, missing rain grommet on the windshield. I'm trying to schedule an appointment with a mechanic and I'm going to get an ODB. I'll be down loading your forms!!! thanks bro, keep up the good work.
this is a great video, very useful. and your downloadable checklist is spot on. thanks much!
My dad had a 2003 Jaguar X-Type in dark blue with the manual 2.5. I loved it and we had it for three years. We bought it brand new for 36k so $1,900 is an awesome deal.
lol
When you see that many good computers and TVs cost 1,900 it's an amazing deal
+Amin Naqvi He got this car for $1,900 no way?
+Sushi Wolf yeah didn't you watch till the end
+Sushi Wolf holy piss dude I'm taking you with me next time I buy a car...
"always be respectful to the owner when test driving car!" *Does Brake test* ROFL
gotta see if the car flips over and kills us both.
I always do the brake test. If you ask the owner and he / she agrees, what's the problem? In my experience most of the cars I tested have failed the tests ;) It's not dangerous when you're within the speed limit. Brakes fail if the car stops slower than expected or ABS doesn't kick in. Most cars however failed the hard acceleration test. After like 5 test drives I decided to keep my old car, because unlike the cars I tested - it passes all the tests. Yes, I do these tests every time I leave the garage after another repair ;)
Testing the brakes is never a bad idea. Did this on my car once when i suspected the brakes lines may be failing and sure enough they failed. Better that they failed at that moment rather then when i need them.
Yed thats acteuly a thing that evryone needs to do
Soi, soi, soi.
Great Negotiation Chris! I love it.
Chris, I just want to say I watched this video when it came out and watch it whenever I go to buy a car. the fact I know you'll read this comment and you respond to so many even on older videos shows a lot about your character. thank you for the great videos, I have a 99 ranger so your Mazda videos helped me a lot.
