    Correction: the two friction plates that go on last do NOT go in the small slots they do in fact go in the larges slots just like all the rest of the friction plates. The small slots are only used for the stock clutch........

      Well what's the worst that can happen, you just wear out the stock clutch a little sooner that's all, may be alright . You do get access the the hole to lock the crank when you take that clutch cover off so you should do that and but a new gasket to put it back on when you finish. Or have someone from the other side hole the crank from moving...

      Glad to see this video, just getting ready to install my "black Friday" Rekluse clutch and thanks for the heads up! Those pistons are marketed by S&S but they are a Weisco part. If a piston got damaged I do not think you could source one because S&S has invested in tooling with Weisco and they are not sold to the public. All 3 companies: Advanced Sleeves, Cometic gasket and Weisco are in Northern Ohio. I have talked to and bought sleeves from Advanced, talked to Cometic and they should sell a gasket if anyone needs one. My clutch is going in at 36,000 miles; my Weisco 83.5mm pistons and S&S cam have over 8,000 miles on them with plenty of smiles and no problems. Anxious to see what the new clutch pull feels like. Also anxious for your top-end video, I only took pictures of my install back in June 2023.

      😷You were the one I was talking about that also took advantage of the sale. My stock clutch pates look like they still have plenty of life left in them, and no burn marks from over heating. Moving the lever on the clutch cover felt fine.@@frederickwoods5943

    Looks fairly simple to do. I installed one of their auto clutches in a KLR about 5 years ago and I don’t remember it going that smoothly. The website says it’s supposed to improve power delivery. I suppose if you have tested it out it would also be with the other work done so it would be difficult to isolate the improvement. Good video though. I’ll definitely consider Rekluse again when it comes time to do my clutch.

    I never needed to change everything.

      No need to make all the changes I’ve made but suspension 🤔🤔that really makes a difference how the bike handles . You have the same tires 😳 I didn’t find anything wrong with stock tires I wore them out though and the next set as well I’m on the third set 😁.

    Once you raise the compression, in theory, you should then need to start using higher octane fuel. Do you use higher octane fuel? If yes, which one? 95 or 98?

  • @johnk7814
    @johnk7814  Před 7 měsíci

    Usually I get 93, have to see when it's back together but I haven't heard people with 865 650's having to do that.

    Hi thank you excellent videos, Ihave a question I hope to get a reply as I am now fitting this upgraded clutch. The last 2 clutch friction plates you fit in the short gaps in the basket are they not supposed to go in the same gaps as the other plates as they would be running on the steel shims that were fitted? It makes sense to put them where the originals ran but there's no extra fitted steel shims on the other little fingers.
    Hopefully my kit will come with instructions.

    • @johnk7814
      @johnk7814  Před 23 dny +1

      You are correct David all friction plates on the Rekluse clutch go into the long slots. I assumed it was the same but nooooo🤭 what happens if you do is the sleeves won't stay flush with the bottom of the basket.. It's nit a hard kit at all to fit make sure all gasket material from old one is removed or maybe you'll get lucky and yours won't stick and can reuse . One thing I will telll you is Neutral is a little different to get in .The OEM is very forgiving, with the Rekluse and the aqdded plates shifting up and down very smooth as long as it is adjusted right but Neutral whn the bike is running the bike mostly has to be moving for it to go in. So when your coming to a stop and you want to put in in neutral give yourself room before your going stop the bike rolling in 1st to get it in other than that it's working perfectly .

      Hey Ken they are Metzeler Lasertec Bias Sport Touring Tires . The current one's on the bike are my 2nd pair, my first pair I had on the bike for over 12000 miles. They're good tires and I had no issues with them. The front I put on a 110/80 18" would like to fit a 130/70 on the back if I could find it next time...😁 Cheer's

    Nice video. I see that you're stock clutch had one of the fibre friction plates fitted in the short slot and when you reassembled with the new plates you put two of the friction plates into these shorter slots. Yet the instructions for the torqdrive specifically say not to put any into theee shorter slots and to only use the deeper slots. How is your clutch going? I got the Rekluse clutch installed by a bike shop when they did the 865 big bore kit, and have always found gear changes and finding neutral to be harder than before. Is yours a bit less smooth now or same as before? Not sure what way the shop did it but I'm thinking probably as per the instructions. I'm wondering whether Rekluses instructions are correct or whether actually you should still put the last one/two friction plates into the short slots.

    • @johnk7814
      @johnk7814  Před 24 dny

      Yes that is a mistake when using the Rekluse I later cuaght that and put all the fiction plates in the large slots. It is correct for the stock but not the Rekluse. I made another video about changing the clutch cable and opened up the cover again and went through what happens inside when you put the clutch lever. Good catch sir 👍

    • @johnk7814
      @johnk7814  Před 24 dny

      I can tell you that the reason they say to put all of fiction plates in the large slots is because if you don't those baske sleeves will move towards the outside no longer sitting flush with the bottom on the slot. as for how it works I had issues's with getting it adjusted right I had smooth up shifts but not so coming back down. some of that might be because of nor having them in the right place or I realized my cable I bought from Venhill the stadard lenth was about 3-4 inchs too long for the bars I have on the bike.When the cable came down the frame it dipped below the top of clutch cover bend up again. It also moved on me and sliced the outer part of cable 😡 brand new one too. I bought anthor cable from Venhill but it's one you cut to lenth and after that thihs cutch is flawless now very smooth up and down BUT the problem you have with neutral I have as well must be something that the 3 extra plates in the pack must cause.🙂 You just have to get used to it , the bike has to be moving when the engine is running to get it in neutral. So when you come up to a light and you want to shift into neutral get in there before you stop.😂 When the bike is not running there's not much problem in getting it in neutral. But I do like the clutch now the stock one I guess is made to be very forgiving compared with the upgradeed one.

    It will be very interesting to know how the bike feels with the high compression pistons etc. How much more powerful the engine feels and if it retains it fabulous character?
    Are you going to put it on a dyno? 🤔🙂

    • @johnk7814
      @johnk7814  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Yes I think so too, you really only see 650's with engine work made into 865's not keeping the same bore just raising the compression and putting the better cam in.👍

    • @2WHEELSor2WINGS
      @2WHEELSor2WINGS Před 7 měsíci

      @@johnk7814 . I think it might make more sense than a 865cc. More in keeping with the mechanical balance off the whole machine. It's a beautifully balanced bike with a great character and I would not want to jeopardize it's over all poise for power. A bit more go would be welcome though.
      I will be awaiting your thoughts...

    Did you consider using a Barnett clutch kit?

    • @johnk7814
      @johnk7814  Před 6 měsíci

      Trufully I didn't know there was another maker of of a clutch for the 650 but I did just have a look on their website and they do make one. The Rekluse does however have more fiction plates then the Barnett 10 to their 7 with is what the stock clutch has. More plates means more surface area and it doesn't have the added basket sleeves in their kit like the Rekluse has which is a nice feature to have saves the wear on the friction basket which I believe is made from cast aluminum . But it is a more budget kit for the 650 Rekluse is much more expensive good thing I bought it on Black friday sale with 30% off 🙂

    • @waltcrawford6153
      @waltcrawford6153 Před 6 měsíci

      The Rekluse clutch is a better clutch however the Barnett clutch is sufficient for a 650 cc performance build.
      If any of your viewers are interested, I have contacted Wiseco and they will make a high compression piston Kit for the RE 650, if I can find 8 people who are interested in purchasing a kit. Waiting on pricing information from Wisco
