    You seem to have a proverbial "stick up you bum" when it comes to vmoda.
    Surprised as you were able to justify the solo2 at its current $200 price point with less criticism and more enthusiasm....
    I own the m80. Have for a few years. I never knew you reviewed it until the other day I watched your review. Afterwards I felt that you and I do not hear things the same. I was surprised once again. I would not describe them at all as being rolled off to the point of congested. I am able to hear a very good amount of detail. Especially compared to the solo2. I don't get it.....

    Thank you very much for your opinion on the bass sound vs the M50x. I have a pair of M50x's and specifically watched this video to see if I should upgrade to the M-100's because I was looking for a more isolating pair of headphones with a rich and tight bass. Good video and I'll be sure to watch your other content!

  • @shaolin95
    @shaolin95 Před 9 lety +21

    Wow so many things wrong with this "review".
    How can you even compare the bass (if you can even consider the M50s have bass) to the M100 and then say the M100s are not controlled? Really, what did you listen with? The M50s are a JOKE for bass...completely disconnects me from music and I am a classical pianist so I listen from classical to latin, pop, oldies, etc. Pretty much any music style except metal or "gangster rap".
    Then the highs issue....really, missing details? I urge you to go to an ear doctor and stop listening to loud music. You look too young to already be losing your high freq hearing man. The M50s are very bright, almost ear piercing, but of course, if your hearing is losing the high frequencies then that will explain why you feel the M100 are lacking on detail.
    Then your biased build quality comparison was the final drop for me. I mean, that was just plain silly.
    You got one less subscriber this morning.

      @InksJC Před 9 lety +6

      Check out the graphs of both iems, the V100s bass is less deep and controlled, higher in distortion. It also has treble roll off as Lachlan mentioned, though it is smoother. M50x is less sharp than the regular m50 and its also only mildly bright cause of a single peak, no big deal. At least it's treble response doesn't drop past 10k...
      So since objective data agrees with Lachlan, I'll Say you are the one that needs ears Checked.

    Quick question, I know you've done a review on the V Moda m100's review but have you ever tried out the AKG k701 or the q701? There are no large stores around me I can test either of these out. I was just looking for something mainly for mainstream songs, a little bit of rock, then I'm also going to buy a third party mic and doing some gaming on them. Any other suggestions would be awesome too! Thanks for taking the time!

      I purchased a set of M100 and after a week of usage, I haven't to say I disagree with your review in a few parts.
      Durability seems to be top notch, even with the "thin"metal hinges, it's a very sturdy metal. Also, sound isolation is well above average, it's very very good.
      The headphones as a whole are probably the best one I've ever used. Excellent, excellent headphones.

      After watching several Sennheiser "reviews", Sennheiser appears to be astroturfing CZcams channels. I bet that Sennheiser provided you with a nice promotion to give Sennheiser headphones great reviews, and to shoot down competitors. This really explained your ridiculous whining about the M100. It is the new standard for $300 headphones.

  • @WithmeVerissimusWhostoned

    Hey mate, really love the way you conduct your reviews!
    And I got a question, am I correct in my assumption that you recommend M50X for listening to classical music/musicals? I'm looking at ATH PRO700MK2. Which, compared by specifications, are a bit better than M50X, but I haven't found any of your reviews addressing PRO700, however I'm assuming that if M50X would be a good choice, then PRO700 would probably fit my requirements as well.
    If M50X or PRO700 wouldn't be suitable, which other alternative would you recommend? I'm trying to make a more mature decision buying my new headphones and classical music is the reason I buy them for. So I would appreciate any advice on it!

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  Před 9 lety

      The Pro700 is not better than the M50X, it just sounds different. I actually own a pair! If you are after classical, go for the NAD Viso HP50. It's an excellent all rounder with a great sound. :)

    I have both headphones for a long time....The m50s are a slight clearer on the treble weaker on the base which is to be expected as the vmodas are bossted...with my life on the line i would pick the vmoda since i am a basshead..but the thing about the bass on the modas is that it is not overpowering and it is very clear sounding and the mid range doesn't get drowned out....but it's very close. They both some of the best headphones available.

    I'm in love with my M100 , actually i'm using a tablet with the app viper4android to emphasize the bass more.
    Usually I drive the headphones with the tablet Because It provides more power than the smartphone to handle the bass . and I use the Fiio X1 too .
    So now I was looking for a portable amp like the Fiio E12 thought of as the Cayin C5 can not find it easily in my country.
    You recommend me the Fiio E12 for serious bass boost or some other better in that aspect of the same brand ?

    Wow, don't agree with this review at all. The v-modas outclasses the Mx50's in highs, mids and base..... These two head phones are on different levels.....Did you use a weak driver for this test? The v-modas need way much more power than a samsung phone provides for example...
    Actually the v-modas are very good for classical music, not like a flat pair in the same price range of course, but the highs are still sparcly and very distinctive. Violins sounds amazing. The mids are also very good. Also the base doesn't bleed into the mid-low at all, like the m50x do. Comparing with the daft highs of the m50X the v-modas highs are phenomenal.
    The v-modas need an amp for phones, also for weak laptop soundcards...
    I'm puzzled about this review, something isn't right.

    Nice review. Thank you. I had the m50x and thought they were very very good until I tried the NAD viso hp50 much later on. After listening to the hp50, the m50x sounded terrible in comparison. The m50x sounded very closed in and more rough in texture (unrefined). The bass was also more loose to my ears.
    I heard such good things about the v-moda m100 that I was dying for you to review them. And you did! Thank you.
    I was a little disappointed that they didn't get as good a positive review as I hoped. What killed it for me was that you prefer the m50x to them. I hate the m50x after hearing the viso hp50. I sold the m50x with no regrets.
    I was hoping to get the m100 in complement to the hp50 for when I'm in the mood for a fun listen (some electronic music). But if they don't sound significantly better than the m50x then that would be a bad decision.
    I have a couple questions if you be so kind to answer.
    1. How does the soundstage of the m100 compare to the m50x and hp50 (normal pads)?
    2. Does the m100 sound more refined than the m50x in the midrange (I know the hp50 does)?

    Hey Lachlan great review as always. It seems the NAD Viso and M50X are your top recommendations and I know you don't have it anymore but how does the Momentum rank amongst those two in your opinion? With the recent price drop $220 in US, it is looking more and more like a steal, I don't like the M50x for casual listening too glossy and artificial sounding distant mids but technically competent and I respect your views. I like the more natural forward lower mids of Sony ZX700, HD598, UE6000 so is the Momentum for me? And how does the NAD fare against those headphones in terms of mids? Keep up the awesome work and I'll look into setting up a patreon thingy. Cheers

    The earcup holder is technically designed as so since the Crossfade LP for ease when cleaning or disassembling the headphone as well as installing and removing the earpads. Mine are fitted snug however so they won't be an issue.
    While yeah the M50x's are arguably the best overall headphone, the V-Modas are clearly meant to be more "fun" but still cater to DJ's and the like, hence the heavy focus on the lows.

    (spoiler: long rant. tl;dr at the end)
    Dear Lach, try to bend the headband on the M50 like you do with the M-100. Because I don't think you would want to do that.
    Now durability is a very objective thing, out of all things headphones, and I, having both headphones, will stand by the M-100's construction. Thin metal on the headband arms can still take more of a beating than thick plastic, and if you look at the inner side of that same joint on the M50, you will find it hollow. Not to say that the M50 is not durable - it will survive conditions - but the M-100 can't be less durable than that. Also, plastic breaks, but metal bends - and we can bend it back, in the worst case.
    On another note, the point where you say the connection of the earcups and the arms can pop out, well it does pop out, but actually to absorb the force exerted on the driver housing when it drops, so that is actually a design feature.
    Comfort, being just a tad more subjective than durability, is also better on the M-100. I hated the clamping force of the M50 and the headband construction that doesn't comply with many noggin shapes. M-100's headband would be more ergonomic so as to make up for its weight. Bunch of people would agree on the M50 being the less comfortable. The M50 earpads might best the stock M-100 earpads, but not the XL pads.
    Onto the more subjective things, I personally think the M50 is overrated, and boring. And overrated. But that's just me. The M50 is more technically complete, but the M-100 is more musical. Now most people getting the M50 aren't doing music production, and if you're not listening to anything classical, orchestra-ish, then the M-100 is more musical. If you're a Top 40 listener then it only gets better. The M-100 has a really fun sound when compared to the M50. Bigger, more airy soundstage for closed back, better toe-tapping factor (generally warm sounding headphones are easier to listen to than reference pairs with forward highs). If you try to get technical, which in reviews you do, then the M50 will seem better, but in real world music listening scenario I bet the M-100 would be a better companion.
    The only thing I would complain about the M-100 is that it doesn't fold flat so you can rest it on your chest when wearing around the neck, otherwise it always feels smaller than then M50.
    About the M50, it's not the be-all, end-all headphone. Frankly, it's not even the best value in its price bracket, let alone the M50X. The M50 is hyped in the serious audio community just as much as Beats is hyped among consumers. I think we should stop considering the M50 as the benchmark of consumer headphones, and think that it bests everything else in everything.
    tl;dr I have both headphones, think M-100 is better durability and comfort wise, and M50's sound is overrated. In real world listening the M-100 tends to be better with more soundstage and a warmer sound signature, unless you're into classical music, in which case both headphones perform poorly with the M50 being a bit better.
    P/S: It's quite weird that you liked the Beats Solo 2 but not so much the V-Moda XS...they have probably the same forward mids profile.

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  Před 9 lety +2

      ***** Thanks for your detailed thoughts... I definitely don't think that the M50X is the best at everything, though I tend to think of it as a bit of a better all rounder than the M100. Don't get me wrong, I really like the M100 as well. As for the Solo 2 and the XS, the XS's forward mids are a little more dominant simply because they lack bass compared to the Solo2. And given that the XS isolates so poorly, I end up raising the volume when I'm wearing them around - which really just puts those mids in my face. Different strokes for different folks, as always!

      Okay, back after learning a bit more, I can without a shadow of a doubt recommend the V Modas over the audio technicas.The reason why the Audio-Technica ATH M50X headphones are so popular is because everything is so loud. Notes that should be in the backround blare way louder than they should, and many confuse this for better clarity etc. The sound on these headphones for the price, is not as great of a deal as many say it is, for normal use, holy hell I would never suggest these. Not for monitoring either, despite getting everything else right, (for monitoring) this is not in any way a flat pair of headphones. For casual listeners, these are fatiguing as all hell, for monitoring these are bassy as all hell.

    Like a few others have said, something weird is up with your review. I think you might have made some decent points about the v-moda's build quality, as though I haven't had a single issue with mine I did THINK of the same possible issues when I first saw them, however I think your review of the sound vs. the ATH is completely unfair and overblown. You tend to go into a lot of detail in your review, giving the impression that you might really know a lot and understand what you are talking about. I fell for this the first time I watched it, but the second time around I felt like you might have been doing that on purpose. Here is why.
    You completely neglected to mention that the two headphones are meant to be used for two completely different things. You did sort of mention that the ATH was for studio type work, but you completely failed to state where the vmodas are supposed to be used, which is for DJ and EDM type music, music that focuses on bass such as rap / hip hop, electronic music, bass&drum, and a lot of other things. This is where I believe your bias kicked in. The second time through this review, I could see where that you were biased towards the ATHs throughout, not just in regards to the vmodas but in regards to other headphones as well. No matter what headphones did what well in whatever category, they were always just *slightly worse* than the ATH.
    I also don't agree with your analysis of the high / mid / low sound quality. You claim the mids are drowned out when bass kicks in, and I completely disagree. Perhaps you are using an underpowered sound card or similar, or perhaps you are being biased once again. I can hear mids just as well as highs and lows in everything I have listened to. The only point about it's sound quality I thought you were actually accurate on is that, of course, they wouldn't be the best for classical music. But then again, anyone who gets headphones designed towards EDM type music in order to listen to classical music probably needs to get their head checked a little.
    Maybe consider taking away a little bit of your bias towards the ATHs and review again.

      @joshuacastrejon8339 Před 9 lety +1

      I actually had this same problem so I'll give you my opinion. Don't get m50x if your a bass head. They lack bass. Idk what Studio 2013's are but if you are referring to Beats Studio 2013...just don't get them. Beats are not good. I had the momentum on ears (1st momentum on ear, not 2.0) and they were pretty good considering me being a bass head, but now I own the m100's and they satisfied my needs very well. They have sharp and big bass but with very detailed highs. I would go with the m100's but if you want wireless freedom and noise cancelation, go with momentum ON ear 2.0. Because the on ears have more bass than the over ears. A little less bass than the m100's but still good. Hope this helped!

    • @Incinerate1212
      @Incinerate1212 Před 9 lety +1

      Carlos Fabián If bass head you can scratch off m50x.
      So your choices are Beats studio 2.0/Vmoda m100 and Momentum. In terms of bass the vmoda actually has the most of all of them. The momentum's have the most mids of all of them, and vmoda has the best highs of all of them.
      Beats studio 2.0 does sound very good for us bass heads, However i'd suggest not getting them. The build quality is not great and they got active noise canceling which means they gonna hiss and require charging. So right off the bat you can eliminate m50x and beats studio 2.0
      So with the vmoda you get good bass and clear sounding vocals. Mids are present but not as much as the Momentum's. The momentum's have less bass . This is a tough choice.
      If bass head you cant go wrong with m100 or momentum. Just know momentum's have less bass than the m100 but better mids than m100.
