My dad bought it from the neighbor when it was 20 years old and that was his daily driver for 15 years and 100000 miles later. But getting that engine going in -10deg f weather was always a challenge, those 400's don't like the cold that much. And those motocraft carbs always has finicky chokes. I followed the usual procedure recommended in the owner's manual: press the accelerator pedal a little to set the choke, turn the key. Bingo! the engine started with a bump of the starter. I don't understand why others are having such difficulty. By the way, wind chill means how fast everything will get cold, not how cold they're going to eventually get. If the outside temperature is -10F and the wind chill is -30F, the car will still get down to only -10F, not -30F, it'll just get down there a lot faster than if the wind chill was -5F. Wind chill is of interest mostly about how fast exposed water or living things such as humans, plants, or animals will freeze.
They're actually great Winter cars once you get the carb and tuning figured out. I've only owned rear wheel drive cars myself and my 78 LTD Landau probably gets the best traction out of them all. Snow tires help a lot though.

Tip: back another vehicle up to it and let it idle for a half hour while blowing warm exhaust under the bumper/hood of the cold vehicle and it will start right up! ... Lot faster, warmer for you, and easier than two days of horsing around!

I just threw in a 300 6 with single barrel Carter carb and a pull choke through the dash. It starts just fine in a couple of seconds at -10 with no ether. I haven't had lower temps to test with.
We had three super cold days in a row here in Sioux Falls and I had to work all three. It was -26F, -28F, and -28F I don't think your car would of made it.
I had two ltd's this body style in 4 door, one was a '77 1/2 LTD landau and a plain '78 LTD,the '77 had a 351M400 the '78 had a 302, I bought the '77 at a sheriff's auction in '92 for $100 and bought the '78 from a family friend for $600 in 2009 I regret selling both of them

Sounds like you need to rebuild that old Crab! Also think about deleting the egr valve since on these cars they never really worked worth a damn anyway, except to rob Power!

If you stomp hard enough on the gas pedal you break the little plastic part that hooks to the top of your choker plate I never did make any replacement parts for it you got to to get a 10 can and cut one out good luck
Very old school Service Engine light. But really it takes nothing short of an apocalypse to set these old lights off. They really didn't have monitoring systems back then so the car never really knew when something was wrong. It was just a formality light, really.
It was a gorgeous hot 95 F day and had some serious hangover gas cocktail of Barley & McDonalds delivering nauseating power farts. Well, as luck have it, left a blooming rose in a brand new Chrysler New Yorker and slammed her shut in the blazing Sun, cooking the Vapor. Unbelievably & bad timing, a salesman asked me if I had the keys to 1167, the New Yorker and threw him key, forgetting about the new car smell no more. Never laughed so hard him driving away with the windows down hanging out the front window gasping what crawled up my ass & died! I replied Ronald McBarley.
Bah53, I will trade you my 2006 Grand Marquis, no rust, great interior for your LTD. My Marquis needs a downpipe to exhaust gasket and maybe a powersteering rack. If you're interested i can have a mechanic do an inspection and make a list of everything the could possibly be upcoming. It has 95,000 miles, baby blue, excellent paint. I drive it approximately 50 miles per week.
That's no doubt a C6 or an FMX transmission. Change the fluid and filter and you will solve your shifting problem along with cleaning the lines going to the radiator.
bah53 When you change the fluid,you also need to drain the torque converter..Many Fords have a bolt on the TC and if can't get at it you cant get at it,you can drain it by removing the lines going to the radiator and starting it up and letting it drain into a bucket for about a minute. If that doesn't do it then you need to adjust the bands which can be done very easily and if you still have problems,you need to change the lip seals on the pistons for the one two up shift because you are losing oil pressure and if you do that,you might as well throw a rebuild kit in it..
Mike Samra I'm guessing its the seals causing the problem because I only have a problem with delayed/no upshift when its cold. Once the transmission warms up or its warm outside (above freezing) the transmission works fine.
bah53 Ok then you can out an additive in there to help revitalize those seals..I'm actually an auto engineering tech instructor but I can find out the best sealer for you on Monday..I'll be teaching the automatic and drivelines class this spring again.

EGR'S leak-down and you need to check the vacuum to it. It could be the charcoal canister purge valve or PVS.
