My older brother bought that exact same car, color combo etc, to the T circa 1980 when our family lived in Dearborn, MI and in my Sophomore year when I was 16 he let me use it for my first high school homecoming dance. At 16 it really impressed my date and my friends! That car is the bomb! :-)

The best car ever to be on the road even today. I absolutely love Lincolns. When I was kid in the 80s growing up my mom had a 78 Lincoln continental Town car it was white with red velor seats white vinyl roof red pinstripe. It was my favorite car she ever had. I would love another one to relive the memories

Nice vehicle brother! Had a light green ‘79 thunderbird as my first car back in ‘91. I babied that car so much and it was good to me. Had the 302 5.0 liter v8 in it . Had the car when I was in the army up at ft drum and used to drive it home on 4 day passes and leave. My roommate and I were caught in a blizzard in Erie, Pa and there was cars and trucks all on the sides of the highway and we just plowed through it. I had winter tires on it and sandbags in the trunk and it went like a tank in the snow! I ended up selling it to a buddy where I was stationed cuz he used to have one just like it then I bought my first mustang. I’ll never forget that car though and the memories I had with it. I remember my late mother telling me when I started to drive that if I could park that car I could park anything cuz it was so huge. I remember when I was still in high school I could go out with my buddies all night with just $20 and have a good time. $5 gas at least 5 gallons worth of fuel, couple bucks for pack of Marlboro, couple bucks for oil (valve cover gasket was leaking before I fixed it) , $5 for a six pack of beer (a certain bar in the country where we could get served) and the rest of the money shooting pool all night at a pool hall by our house. You can’t do shit with $20 nowadays. That car gave me my first taste of freedom and independence and I’ll never forget it. Thanks for listening to my story and hope you enjoy your beautiful car!

If the choke functions as designed pumping is unnecessary and only serves to flood the engine before it starts.
Try it as stated in the owners manual. One pump sets the choke shut and throttle to fast idle. Crank it until it starts with your foot off it and resist the temptation to rev it when it starts as that will only kick it off fast idle and stall. If if starts and stalls just crank it again.
If the choke flap closes properly it cuts off the air and the cranking vacuum will draw a very rich charge through the venturies to start. No need to use the accelerator pump to start it. It only overloads it with fuel.

I love these so much, I'd always take them over anything else, but really, this is why Japanese cars took America by storm in the 70's and American automakers had a recession lol.
Don't get me wrong, I'd take this Lincoln any day of the week over a Toyota or Honda of the same era. I can appreciate all types of cars being desirable in their own ways but it'll always be a 4900lbs boat anchor that sits in 2 zip codes with a V8 that rivals some small buildings in capacity but gets the horsepower of a vacuum cleaner for me. The flaws of these cars add to them in my opinion. You get to know them personally. You know just what to tap to make this work, you learn how to adjust that to make it work better. You learn how they tick. I had one, I miss it every day but it was in rough shape when I had it.

I'm a lifelong car guy and especially 77-79 Lincoln's, MK Vs - Town cars. Grew up with them, just love the honey- gold paint scheme on this rolling pieces of artwork. Now quick question, did someone actually leave this outside in minus double digit weather??? Or was it in an unheated garage which it kinda looks like?? I'm from upstate NY right next to Onondaga lake and yes we get similar cold snaps here. Although our cold stretches tend to go for weeks at a time. This particular Lincoln is just in beautiful condition. Thank you for posting this, for this comes from an era when Detroit used to build cars WE wanted!! Remember those days?? I do and unfortunately never to return.

Make sure you have the right sized battery, biggest you can squeeze in. Does it have the adjustable air rear shocks? Mine did, a little tire valve in the trunk so you could add or release air for varying loads to keep the ride consistent.

As this video was uploaded, there was a 1979 Lincoln Town Car at the Littleton U-pull with 95,000 miles showing on the odometer. It had an engine fire, but the engine still could be turned over with a breaker bar and socket. I bought the engine for $225, (it was a 400, very few 1979s had the 460) The car was still there 2 days ago and I stripped out the delay wiper control and switch to use in a 1977 Thunderbird. Someone had raided the deck lid, right front fender and all the rear end trim, as well as two of the optional upgrade wheels. They left the 9" open differential, curiously it wasnt equipped with the Traction-Lok.

I had a 79 baby blue 4 door town car in 2012-2013 that I rescued from getting scrapped even though it was still very nice just didn't run. I drive a 93 LeSabre to trade and got it moving right in the lot drove it home. The guy didn't even come to see mine just left the title for me. I loved it. Had 8 track. I had to do a timing chain and tires, carb rebuild. I sold it for 3000 in a bind and regretted it. In 2017 I see it on craigslist. My same car same guy who bought it now selling it for 400. Had a knock. He had driven it to Indiana out new radiator alternator starter all kinds of shit. Spun bearing. I went and bought it. Tried thick additive. Drive it with the knock and lived in it all winter. Finally she blew and I sadly ended up letting it go due to no storage. It was so funny pulling Into work guys are like is that the same one from before? Lol. My gf at the time knew me riding a bike. I got off work that day. Saw the ad but was broke. I went to pawn America, convinced them to give me 35 for old comics which they normally don't take. Went to the VFW. Hit a 200 tab. Went to another bar and hit 2 more so like that I had 500. Took a cab, bought it. Drive it to my GFS she sees this gigantic oimpmovile pull in it was priceless.

It ran real snappy then tho. Even with the nock it ran and drove pretty damn well for quite a while probably another few thousand miles at least steelhead feromona get up to it for the anemic 400 of the 70s malaise era.

I know the 460 in the late 70s didn't have the same amount of power as it did due to emissions, but ive also heard that they reduced the compression ratio of this engine in the later half of the 70s as well which resulted in a big drop in power too, is this true?

    • @LiamO86
      @LiamO86  Před rokem +3

Yes, I believe it was post 1972ish that Ford made the transition to the low compression 460. They also retarded the timing a bit to compensate for emissions. Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. "Bundesabgasbespaßungsverbot" in German....(((((((

Really depressing as a 25 year old that lives for the classics. Stressing me out.

I WANT TO MOVE TO AMERICA !
i love freedom and this is just too much, some call american dumb but each year our freedom go away and we can only cry about it.
Texas may be dumb and rascist but at least they wont kill me for wanting to have a cheap and fun car.

That 70s land yatch has baroque and decadent written all over it. You will be lucky if you get an overall 7 mpg consumption. It is as crudely underengineered, inefficient, slow and menupausic to drive as the very similar Soviet ZIL limousine of that period. It is that embarrassingly bad!

Believe it or not, it averaged about 13mpg from N. Dakota to Idaho. The 460 of this era was bogged down as you mentioned, we are a non emission state, so I pulled off the smog equipment and plan on upgrading the carb and intake for some better performance and efficiency. Small steps at a time. Our '89 camper van has the same same power train but is fuel injected and it gets 10-11 no matter how you drive or what you're pulling. They are reliable for sure, and she sure is smooth!

Most of us land yacht diehards beg to differ with the aforementioned!

@@davidallen5776 please offer your arguments. Also, provide us with a list of cars less fuel efficent and dynamically more inept than your typical 1970s overweight gas guzzling US land yatch.
