Too Nice To Be Junked? 1977 Ford LTD Landau 460 Junkyard Find

- 1977 #FordLTDLandau Junkyard Find. This ol girl just seemed a little too nice to be junked in my opinion. Other than the qaurter vinyl top causing some rust to the roof, she was one pretty solid, rust and dent free malaise era land yacht. She was pretty well optioned as well with the big boy 460 big block under the hood. She was also sporting a sunroof (could have been a moon roof, not sure) as well as both driver and passenger electric seats. She may have had a #tracloc 9 inch rear end as well. All in all, a darn Shane this one was scrapped.

Whoa Nelley, LTD and it's going to be over for thee....
We got the VIN, we win: 7 for 1977 model year, B for Oakville, Ontario Canada assembly, 65 for LTD two door Landau sedan, A for 460 V8 with four barrel and the rest is the production sequence. The Oakville plant opened up in 1953 and still operates today.
We got the tag, we can brag: 7L for Light Jade exterior paint, RR should be for a Jade vinyl top, 21 for Atlanta, GA sales district, 60L for two door LTD Landau sedan, PR should be a Jade/Green cloth interior, 23L for scheduled date should be November 23, 1976 production which was a Tuesday, O for 3.00:1 rear axle ratio, locking type, U for C-6 automatic transmission and A for factory installed AC (albeit with a Delco/Frigidaire/GM compressor).
I believe this would have a Motorcraft 4350 four barrel that year. They were terrible and a lot of them were replaced with aftermarket carbs. For some time in the early 1970s Ford's 429 engine used....drumroll....a Rochester Quadrajet. As noted previously, Fords of this era ran sloppy, were sloppy and got terrible fuel mileage. The 1970s was not kind to the Big 4 and Ford suffered among the worst in those years. GM was running away with sales in a lot of categories. This one was like a poor man's Lincoln. It was a nice car when new, but to Lincoln owners, this was the cheap-o neighbor that didn't want to spring for a Lincoln. But, for some, they like it....
Whoa Nelley, Jade doesn't have it made in the shade. 1977 and going to Heaven. 4-6-0 and gotta go. Motorcraft needs a life raft. Green and no longer mean. Lincoln on the cheap and always been a heap. That's it, time to quit. Going to flat and that's that. Going to get squished and only the FOMOCO "Malaise" faithful are really going to be pissed......
Darn I missed out on that rear end. I do believe its the first one that ive run into that didnt have an open diff
@@ClassicRideSociety Based on the code on the door, I believe it was a 3.00:1 locking, rear disc rear end.
I thought I seen the sticker on the underside of the trunk for jacking instructions for a locking differential.
@@garymckee448 You might be right on that one.
@@googleusergp Correct. 6 is open 3.00. O is LSD. The disc brakes are optional
regardless of rear ratio. This one had skirts but are no there. .
Someone should come and rescue this one! Good looking car! 🚙
Looks like a nice car, it should be saved.
Man that almost makes you wanna cry what a beauty
I love that green interior. I want that car
That car was someone's pride and joy at one point. A well optioned car for its time. It looked like it needed a bit of work, but sadly not enough people interested in saving these. It survived 44 years in relatively decent shape, only to end up in a junkyard. It might have been a one owner car (or one family), then the owner got sick or passed away, the car sat for over 15 years, decayed a bit, then the house had to be sold and the car was unceremoniously sent off to be scrapped. ☹️
Somebody took care of it. Even the engine was fairly clean.
I agree. I hear so many stories as the one you described in your comment. The next generation never appreciates beautiful cars. If it isn't NEW, they don't want it. I would love to own this car.
Those were such nice cars in their day. Super smooth and quiet ride. This one is worth saving, rare 2 door coupe with factory moonroof, cornering lamps and I see the lighted key holes, it's loaded. Looks straight too.
That was a beautiful well optioned car in it's day.
Wow what a beauty. I wish I could purchase it. It is probably crushed by now
I remember the day those cars were everywhere!
…while there were lots of LTD’s to be seen being driven on US roads during the 1970’s not so many of them were highly optioned Landaus and not so many Landaus were 460 V-8 2 door versions and fewer still had a factory sunroof …like the jade green color cloth interior …this was a very nice 1977 LTD Landau when new …sad way and place for this vintage 1977 LTD Landau to have ended up as a derelict …easy to imagine a different outcome for this 1977 LTD Landau where it was still in nice original condition, perhaps still owned by ia 2nd or 3rd owner who was taking good care of it and taking it to car club outings and shows …sad to see the fate this once superb American luxe style drive + ride has met …it deserved better …
…thank you CRS for showing + sharing 👍🙂
I think it's been in poor shape/decline for a number of years and probably hasn't been nice since the 1980s.
@@googleusergp definitely one the nicest to arrive in the yard though. Most of the time they re pretty well worn out
@@ClassicRideSociety True, but sloppy, slow and sluggish since 1977.
wow that thing is almost Arrow strait!!! that is crazy that thing should not be in there lol
Amazed the yard didn't dent up sides like they often do
I washed a lot of those back in the day working at the local dealer and I think I only saw 1 with a sun roof. Nice car, love the interior color.
I still like these Ford LTD cars as I did when. I was a kid. Nice find!
Had a 78 LTD landau with the 400M. Loved that car. This car is in OK shape. It’s got a lot of rustfree parts. Lots of useable body trim parts as well as unbroken tail lights and front marker lamps.
I had a 76 Landau 2 door two tone black and silver, red wine interior 400.2bbl mill
Looks pretty good for the age! Thanks for the video!
She was nicer than most 👍
Am amazed no dents,straight car!!!
A rare sight to see in the yard
They had a smooth quiet ride. Absolutely amazing. Only drawback was spongy suspension and massive weight.
Damn another Ltd in the yard man theres so much you can do with a car like this
That Interior is amazing, looks very well taken care of even the wood trim looks great too. I actually like the color.
I have a 77 just like that but it'sl silver metal flake with gray interior just like that and it's still running strong
My cousin had a car very similar to this. Can't recall which year, his didn't have velour but a nylon type interior but shared the color. Very comfortable car and I can attest to. We were a group of three on a trip to W. VA to visit a cousin. Too bad they don't produce something like this today, but of course in an updated format. Ah, the memories!
I love visiting my local U Pull & Pay for this exact reason. It breaks my heart most times, but I do enjoy the trip down memory lane.
Sad to see that someone only the center section. I am assuming it is a 9 inch differential. The body was incredibly clean.
I can't believe one of these is even still around. I can't even remember the last time I saw one. I thought all of these were junked by about 2000. Super popular at the time though. I never knew rear disc brakes was an option on one of these in 1977! Seems like a pretty nice option for a lower priced full sized car. I only knew of Chryslers being offered with rear disc brakes during this time period. Limited slip rear axle too? And a 460 4 barrel... and many power options. Someone spent a lot of money on this car when it was new. And they bought this in 1977 instead of a downsized GM full sized car, which were selling like crazy at the time.
The power moonroof on this car was a Super rare and expensive option. In all my years of loving these 1973 to 1978 Ford LTD's I've only seen 3 in real life including this one with that option from the factory. This car was highly optioned compared to most LTD Landaus. It also has the extremely rare illuminated entry system as seen by the chrome squares around the key holes on the doors. This car should be saved.
I looked at a 1978 Ford LTD wagon for sale in Glendale, Ca a few years back, it was Champagne with brown interior, and it had a factory power moonroof, that is the only wagon, I've ever seen with one, it was so trashed thou, I didn't buy it, to bad they didn't keep better care of it.
@@Robert-kj2jq wow! I never seen a wagon with the moonroof option. That's a true unicorn.
At Kenneth.. Why it is Just Another JUNKY old FERD! Getting smashed and made into a new Toyota for Jan!
Hi my friend. I really love that old school ltd. Merry Christmas my friend.
I owned one of these back in ‘96, I used to love to see it winking at me at lunchtime!!
November of 1976. I was 15 years old. and i had one of these cars as a driver summer of 1988. pulled her out of the weeds. she ran and drove good, but had a rod knocking. i drove her all summer till she couldn't move her self anymore then sold her for scrap.
I hope the panels and interior help others. Love the green velour and the paint colour.
Beautiful thumbnail pic.
My aunt and uncle had one of these cars, their's had everything except the sunroof. It was that lemon yellow color with a dark blue landau vinyl top and velour interior to match. They traded the car for a 1984 Delta 88 I believe.
Smart move. Lol.
Their car was probably the 1977 1/2 Special edition LTD. They only came in the Yellow with the Blue vinyl inserts and interior. That car today is one of the most rare of all the 1973-1978 LTD's. I have only seen 2 in my lifettime and they are indeed a special edition car.
I'm not a ford guy but that would be a perfect car to restore or for a weekend cruiser. I kind of like that car because it has a big block you could use it for towing a trailer and it has lots of trunk space. The back panel on the deck lid is also nice. A person could put some led lighting in that. The folding headlight covers are also another neat feature. That car is in excellent shape for its age. I would not say it not a desirable car. It has all the right options to make it desirable. I would buy that car If I had the chance. I hope somebody saves it from the crusher. Great video man.
I guess its in general that these cars are not desirable. All of the ones ive seen in the yards were not as well optioned as this one.
Awesome ride in it's day
I'm a Chevy guy, yet it's a shame that a car this nice ended up at this junkyard.
nice Ford....I do like when you show them off....I'm old enough to remember them new.
I got a 74 Cougar coming up. Not in as nice a shape though
She's winkin' saying "take me home w/ you"
I am sorry for the car, cosidering its state before the picking of parts it would have been a nice daily driver. Again a spledid find and supurb video from Bennie. Thanks a lot from Henry Hendriks a subscriber from the beatiful city of Arnhem in the Netherlands.
Your Canadians will be mighty chipper in that back seat!
The "A" in the VIN on the door jamb always indicates a 460 V-8 regardless if it is a Ford, Mercury, or Lincoln.
Loaded nice car
WOW!The drivers seat isn't even worn out. Hard to find those in that condition.
I forgot to mention in the video but yea it was nice. Rare to see
sad to see this beauty in there :( was probably someones grandparents car and they didnt want to be bothered with it and just scrapped it
I love them LTDs it is a shame to see that one in yard she looks nice and straight I would driver her that paint could just be buffed out and the top issues could be fixed and it would make a show car.
I currently need that hood. Contemplating a trip to Texas now. Humm Taco Cabana, hood, what other benefits of a trip from Michigan
Coincidentally, I had a chicken quesadilla from Taco Cabana after I left the junkyard yesterday
I was a truck driver for 30 years whenever I got to Texas I got Taco Cabana lol love that place. Enjoy your videos Merry Christmas
@@coolbreeze5561 👍 merry 🎄 to you as well
You might see warmer weather in Texas.
she's saying 'please don't crush me', 'come play with me'. my dad had a 4 door and it went like a bat outta hell.
oddly my like button number was '427'.
Alot of people didn't know what they had...in mint condition that car would be worth some money...
Probably drove it in there.
I wouldn't doubt it
HI BENNY ILOVE THESE BIG BOATS DAM THEY RIDE GREAT!!!! THE COLOR I LIKE TO A BIG 70S COLOR.. WINKY IS GOING TO BE CHRUNCHY!! SAD PEACE!!!
Shame on this one going to the crusher
Love your videos
Appreciate ya 👍
As prices for 60's and 70's muscle cars continue to get completely out of the reach of average guys/girls it's cars like this that will be built/worked on. This is totally salvageable,,such a shame to it in yard
I agree 👍
Nice Ford !!
It's car's like this that make it hard to watch CZcams channels like this 😪
She was top of the line
I would love to have the engine out of it. Those cars were cruisers and seldom if ever abused and the 429/460 was a Bulletproof monster in anything it was installed in.
Cool😎car....same one in the 1994 🎥 movie "the crow" it had a 8-71 blower sticking outta the hood..
Here in northern ohio we make good drivers of low rust older cars. Just the aluminum bumper spacers on this car are un obtainable here.
I would ride that boat.
I had a car almost exactly like this with A 351 Windsor It was rated at 145 horsepower For almost a 6000 pound car that's ridiculous!
Even though it was a wonderful car Comfort wise! You could sleep in the Backseat Comfortably! ;)
She might be winking but she doesn’t look too happy to be where she is in the condition she’s in
These were beautiful and rare with there Skirts and this Jade color and even though I'm not a Ford fan I do like some like the 69 MERCURY X100,71 Merc Couger XR7 71 Torino 71 Mecr Montego GT
Ford Cyclone.
I would imagine all that plastic on the deck lid is a bear to find intact.
Not a Ford guy and I would have driven that. It's all decked out.
A few years back, I looked at a 1978 Ford LTD wagon for sale in Glendale, Ca it was Champagne with brown interior, it was fully loaded with a factory sunroof, which still worked, I've never seen one in a wagon, I didn't buy it, because the previous owner, trashed the car, it would have taken thousands of dollars to restore it, body damage, it was to bad, I would have shelled out the $3000, had it been in better shape.
You should have, because if that wasn't the Country Squire version. It would have been a great Michael Myers ("Halloween"-1978) duplicate car.
@@firstnamelastname6171 You know, when I saw it, I actually thought it was used in the movie, but they shot through the windows and not the roof, the owner didn't know what they had, they stripped off all the chrome molding, the original wheels and hubcaps where gone and it had some 70's VW Bug type wheels on it, there was a big dent in the rear probably from backing into something, they did some weird brown carpeting all along the back panels, the radio was missing, the power window panel was off from the rear door, and of course it was very sun faded from having the sunroof and not covering it, I do have some pictures of it that I'll try and post.
@@Robert-kj2jq Somebody bought the actual car, restored it and just recently put a video up about it.
@@firstnamelastname6171 I saw that, but I have my doubts about it, that movie car had power windows and a split bench seat with arm rests, thst car has neither, and even if rodents got inside it, you would still see the power window chrome on the doors and you do not see it in that car.
She was a runner back in the day.
Just a tip. You can always tell the 460 by the almost vertical rocker covers.
Excellent point!
Yeah. Well it's increasingly. Becoming more and more rare for a junkyard to sell you a whole vehicle
Fender is offset because the blower motor for the heat and ac is s underneath the fender. Found out to get to it you gotta cut out the inner wheel well where 4 dimples are or pull the fender. I got a 77 Mercury Marquis wish that car was up here I need the Ac/heater core blower house for mins it got smashed up in a engine swap mishap with me and my buddy.
Listning to your voice, you sound like Harry Conick Jr, the guy who voiced Dean. in "The Iron Giant." And seeing as how you are in a "salvage yard," thats ironic... Cool video overall. I had a 76, 2 door with the vinyl back section as well. This model here is cool though, because it has the hidden headlights and the corner turn lights.👍👍👍👍👈👈👈👈💯💯
It's loaded.
Its a cool car. This one is savable. I like this model. Imagine it painted black, with its original wheels.
Unless some LTD lover will skills, time and a shop gets it, I can't see that happening even if the yard were to sell it whole. While it is in good shape for one that came into the yard, that roof has done some damage and the interior, while not trashed is still pretty much done. It's at the point that you would have to put a shit ton of money into it and will probably be 7K less than the car is worth. In this case, the best only hope that it will be picked pretty clean by the time it is crushed. However, these peak malaise era land yachts don't get too much love, so that may not happen.
I’m pissed . Is there anyway u can get it out of there. ? These need to be saved !
The yard is only parting it out
Cool. You got a number for the place
The yard is called BYOT auto salvage in Elm Mott Texas. All their info is online. They are a self service yard though
please let me know where this car is located. I can not save it but need parts for my mercury gran marquis 2 door same color.
I like that car very much
These loaded up for 1977 were 12,000 new my grandpa brought a new one in brown 4 door If this was a 460 it would have the infamous Venturee carburetor which were more way worse than the Chrysler Spark Control System (AKA Lean Burn) both these carbs were junk and problematic to the running of these cars. Also these were a dime a dozen back then and now this could not run to well on the ethanol that they put in the gas as ethanol eats the seals and floats out of them and eats all rubber hoses. These engines were not designed for ethanol based fuel.
I don't think any one would be trying to use the original junk carbs on that engine. I would put a ne intake and fuel injection on it and it would run better than when it was new.
Land yacht, good road car
We had a 78...beautiful but the 400cid we got was bad, always pinged even on premium gas. Also bad computer system...kept stalling...was a floating living room
The C-pillar of the LTD Coupe looks better on 1973 and 1974 model years.
Man I need the trim off that beast! Where is it located?
BYOT Elm Mott TX
@@ClassicRideSociety Damn im in Ga. Do they ship?
Deserves a second chance
I agree
I would take that car just for the engine!
Good video and are you at a LKQ pick a part?
No this was BYOT auto salvage
Yeah, the sun has set on this crate...reminds me of the '78 Grand Marquis I made the mistake of buying. 351W and a FMX transmission, which cost more to rebuild than I paid for the car. The following summer, the engine quit while taking me to work. Great car🙄
351W was a crappy motor like the Cleveland They should have stopped making the Windsor the same time as the Cleveland Chrysler has the best Motors They outsold Ford back then also with the Charger Cordoba and Grand Fury
Any way to find out why it was junked?
Unless there is some paper trail in the car or one knows someone in the yard, it's kinda hard. Maybe doing a vin search might help.
You should buy it
Rust free coupe, they won't last long but alas, once they are here they never leave.
What yard is this please ?
BYOT in Elm Mott Texas
I bet this had the Qudrasonic 8 Track Player
was this crushed? i know you post a lot after cowboy has crushed nice rig!
No it'll be a little while before they crush this one. Cowboy doesn't crush here. They have their own crusher
Could make a very nice ride. Just do some cut & splice on those bumpers. They did not rust badly. After bout every 75000 mi. retorque bands in trans. The factory time chain are not good, plastic teeth. Just replace with better after market.
I'd buy it just for parts!
Nice lowrider
I could use the carb off of it for a spare for the pizza thunderbird!
BY THE WAY I LIKE THE FLIP LIGHTS BUT IN THE WINTER TIME IN MASS. YEARS AGO THEY GOT FROZEN,,.... AND YOU HAD A HELL OF A TIME GOING OUT AT NIGHT I EITHER THREW VERY HOT WATER TO OPEN IT AND TAKE THE HOSE OFF OR,,MY COUGER I SPRAYED CARB. CLEANER ON IT TO OPEN IT.. THE CAR WAS A RUNNER BUT JUNK ,,.. THESE DAYS IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A GEM. THOSE CARS WERE A DIME A DOZON..
The vacuum operated headlights were absolute junk and they would go up and down and wink and not wink. Many pinned them in the open position.
Are the LTD's and the Continental's on the same building platform?
Im not sure. It looks big enough to be
I believe the T-Bird and Cougar shared the same platform as the Continental Mark V in 1977. That is not the same vehicle as the Lincoln Continental which was a squared off sedan and coupe that ran through the 1979 model year.
