What's even more amazing is the fact that the skipper never lost any weight being on that island for as long as he was.
Maryann's banana cream pies.
Even with all that fruit and fish , think he would of lost weight
How did Maryanne bake those pies?@@Rkenton48
I really didnt notice the boat that much, I was always looking at MaryAnne and Ginger.😊
Maryanne for sure 😊
I recall that when the boat turned into a pile of boards, there was no engine.
They did have styrofoam then. And the print on those cups was more MCM. But short lived.
Or interior, closets, galley, bridge, machinery, or really anything. I questioned my parents about that and they said "It's just a dumb TV show."
@@mattfarahsmillionmilelexus They were right.
Actually, if you look real close, you'll notice the boat's engine is right behind Gilligan.
@@waynemacfarland1546 Really? I don't recall that but it's been over 50 years since I saw that episode. As an aside, see the movie "God's Little Acre" Tina Louise is hotter than Marilyn in that!
I don't recall styrofoam cups having designs on them so it is probably a paper cup.
Good point.
What about those Ramen noodle cups you add hot water to. They have print on them as well as Styrofoam coffee cups from 7 11 and fast food places back in the day.
You could definitely buy fancy thin styrofoam cups with paisley, flowers, etc, to match the paper plates!
you can get designs, but back then it wasn’t common if available at all
It’s a waxed paper cup. Very common style in the late 50s early 60s.
And the coffee cup went on to become a tv star, even appearing in Game of Thrones!
I recall that you are referring to a plastic water bottle under a chair, yes?
@@brianhiles8164 I believe it was a Starbucks cup.
@@brianhiles8164 Perhaps you're remembering the anti-plastic water bottle commercials with the Mountain and the religious woman ringing the bell.
Who cares about the boat, I would take Mary Ann into the bushes!
Man... If I were Gilligan. Screw living with The Skipper! Id convince Ginger and Mary Ann that The Skipper farts and snores loudly all night long and that I needed to live with them. Once invited into their abode... Many many many nights of threesome goodness would ensue. 🤣
Back when this Episode was made, a Friend and I visited the Set and took pictures. It was filmed at Zuma Beach next to Point Dune in Malibu. This "Minnow" was never a real Boat, just a large Prop that was made for the first few Episodes. It was sitting on a Boat Trailer that was covered up by Sand through when you show the Paper Cup, you can see two mounds a few feet back that were covering the Trailer Wheels. Also the "Frame Work" shown after the "Boards" came off was a separate Prop as well. I think there was an "Engine" also a Prop made of Wood. Why they had a Helm Wheel in the Keel was a Goof as it would have been higher up in the Boat (I was a Navy Helmsman so I would know). They also had the Raft that went out to Sea. The Palm Trees were brought in for the Shoot. Unfortunately, no shooting was going on that day but gave us the chance to take Pictures of everything! Enjoy your Series.
I remember this episode. You have an eye for details Rick. Love it.
This is a common thing for builders to do leave trash in side what ever they are building. If you renovate a building you will find all kinds of junk left in the walls and ducts .
Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale ,a tale of a paper cup. It's hid from prying eyes but reviled when the resolution is up.
You're killing me! 🤣
Also, it looks like the cup is sitting on a smallish carpenter's sawhorse.
You don't think the Skipper and Gilligan would have paper cups and plates on the boat for their passengers?
Given the era, it would not be improbable but I'd say given the Skipper's upbringing and life, disposables would have seemed wasteful to him when you could simply have shipboard drinkware - flared outward at the bottom for greater stability over the rolling waves - washed and use again. What? You think Skipper's made of money? No! Grumby was a proudly hard working fellow. You want disposables? Go see Mr. Howell, *he* can afford that kind of thing!
The sign read free lunch included.
Yeah it's sort of a goof, but a paper cup in a 60's boat wouldn't be unusual.
Probably not. Remember it was supposed to be a 3 hour tour. Probably didn't plan on feeding them so no reason to have it for them. I could see them having it for themselves, they'd be there all day so this way they wouldn't have any dishes to wash.
I absolutely think it was part of the supplies they had on the boat.
They actually did get off the island in a series of 3 TV movies that aired, I think, in the 80s. They went back, Mr. Howell built a resort, and they hosted the Harlem Globetrotters.
Correct enough, friend. I believe the "never got off the island" is always in the context of the original TV series [unjustly ended too soon do to broadcast schedule complications and an exec's wife liking Gunsmoke *so* much more, so GI was axed to clear up the 1/2 hour]. So franchise "sequels" discounted, they never were rescued in the series.
A HUTTS BOAT IF MEM IS RIGHT. Gilligan cooks fish on deck sets. Raft on fire seen by USCG. Chopper then saved...huh???
I was thinking the same thing, but I think they ment here they never got off in this episode even though the episode was about them leaving.
@@dennisanderson3895technically Gilligan got off the island in the series. There was an episode where he got 3 wishes. Think 1 was for ice cream and a crate washed up that had some in it. His last wish was to get off the island. Small section of the beach he was standing on broke off the island and floated away like 10 feet before it stopped. I know that's not what you ment, just remembered that scene and thought it was funny.
And after ALL these years, still can’t figure why they all took luggage on A 3 HOUR TOUR!!
Good video sir! But it’s not a mistake. It’s an ancient boat makers tradition. The Norse people who were boat makers for say fishermen or Vikings, would always place a cup like drinking vessel in the hull of each ship they built to symbolize good luck for the voyages the ship would take. “May this cup overflow with good fortune on your journey ahead”.
So when the writers of Gilligan’s Island came up with a backstory for themselves to build upon for this episode, they decided that the Skipper would follow the traditions of his ancestors when building the Minnow. Except the only drinking vessel he had at the time was a paper cup he used to drink out of when building. As the Norse say: “Jeg bare tiller!” 😉
While it is possible you simply found the logical reasoning to erase a "blooper," I understand, respect, and accept your analysis, wise sir, and will honor the explanation suggested. (Clever fellow that you are! -Thumbs up - )
Great story but I really think it was a vending machine cup left over from rigging the ships boards to pop.
Regrettably, I do not believe the writers were thinking of Norse mythology when trying to come up with a low budget script for a low budget show.
I mean, they filmed in B&W for a reason.
Apparently the Gods require a better cup to provide good fortune as the Minnow had none.
@@AlexBrandon.Yeah. Because 90% of the shows were in black and white.
The Minnow exists to this day.
This show helped me become mechanically inclined when I was very young
This episode is the one I always think of when I'm remembering watching the show when I was a kid. It's a good example of the castaways always blaming Gilligan for things that aren't really his fault. Also, I do that with my cup about 10x a day. Where did I leave my cup? Oh, I must have finished it and forgot. I'll go get another. Meanwhile there's 10 cups by my computer desk and on my nightstand.
... but your 10 pairs of computer reading glasses are stacked up near the coffee maker. Right? LOL.
@@Colorado_Native if they're not on my head 😆
I do the same with beer cans!!

That is quite an eye, that is your classic Dixie cup with the classic design around the top. 60+ yrs ago Styrofoam didn't exist at least in Indiana. I saw that episode the original time and after 2000 reruns never saw it again. I remembered it all before you described it except for the Dixie cup. Well done!
When I was a kid we lived in Santa Monica, and sometimes visited Marina Del Rey. Somewhere, we saw the actual SS Minnow boat sitting in a lot. I still remember it because it had the hole in it.
OK, I am officially jealous Chris!
The only Minnows with a hole in them was the old used boat purchased for filming the b&w pilot episode at Moloa'a Beach in Kauai. The crew punched holes in it to make it look wrecked. The wrecked boat in the lagoon in the color seasons opening was a prop boat not a real boat. The harbor departure boats used in Honolulu in b&w season 1 and in Los Alamitos (not Marina Del Rey) in color seasons 2&3 were actual functioning rented boats, used only for the harbor scenes, so no need to punch holes in them. What you saw may have looked like the Minnow but it almost certainly wasn't.
Maryanne looks so good!! Had a bad crush on her.
I am OLD enough I watched the series when it was first on (I even had a Gilligan hat! ) i’m pretty sure we didn’t have Styrofoam cups in the early 60s. We had paper “Dixie cups“. Some of them did have a design around the rim.
For sure a paper Dixie Cup.
Why would all the boards come off when they only had a few holes to patch?
You certainly find some interesting tidbits, Rick!
That was my first thought too! 😂🤷🏼♀️
The Skipper actually says that he covered the entire boat board by board with the glue so that would supposedly explain it.
Other than the pure tragic comedy of the hope being utterly dashed, I would speculate they had coated the entire boat with the "adhesive sap" with an intent of ensuring it were watertight and then uneven deterioration caused stresses which then ripped the entire Minnow apart. Maybe *could* have been rebuilt with the same wood [even a smaller version for a double hull?] but a sound production process for nails with the necessary properties/strength would still be need to been developed with their primitive resources, as well as maybe some other workable sealant to add. [As the Thermians lamenting in the film Galaxy Quest when the GI "historical documents" were brought up, "Oh, those poor people!" :-) ]
the boat was in desperate need of an overhaul and rusting nails caused them to come out…
Why would the nails be rusty? They’d only been on the island a few weeks.
Rick, you have the most insanely quick and precise eye for the miniscule detail, it astounds me! I remember the ep: Significant because instead of Gilligan dashing their hopes, he nearly delivered them - and let's face it, it was NOT Gilligan's fault the sap-based formula "goes bad" too quickly. (I will presume they salvaged/repurposed those ship's body boards for table tops or the pool table Howell suddenly produced when seeking to win an "oil well" back from Gilligan, shelves in huts. I mean, it would make sense!
I don't remember stryrofoam cups around in the early-to-mid 1960s even if they were. I expect it's a paper cup. But it's an interesting blooper.
This is a great episode! One of my favorites if thee fav! Looks like a coffee cup to me. Good catch! Thank you for sharing this kind sir! Have a beautiful day!

I really LOVE that kind of stuff and something is really wrong with us BUT I'm going with it!Columbo ain't got nuthin' on you! Thanks!
Although it could be argued that society at large suffers less if Rick misses a detail v. Columbo missing one, I understand and agree!
It’s always cool to notice stuff like this. Thank you for the video Rick, I hope you’re doing well. Keep up the great work and take care!
Amazing job as always Nick! 🛥 Love watching your channel 🧡
Thank you, Rick❤
My all time favorite episode! That's because it features the MINNOW the most before its destruction. As for the cup I never saw it! Maybe Danerys Targaryan breaker of chains and drinker of Stabucks pumpkin spice left it there.
Very cool! Thank you for all your hard work. God bless and stay safe.
Rick, you did it again!! Great catch.
Great attention to detail. Thank You Rick 🌞
🚢This was also the final episode where we would see the SS Minnow intact LOL!🛥🏝🥥📻🥤
Fun staff as always -- TY Rick.
Its a starbucks coffee cup while the crew was prepping the hull for the camera shot(money shot)😂😂😂
That's the new dixie brand bilge pump.
Great episode. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and I remember this episode as a kid. I think it's paper not Styrofoam. No design on Styrofoam cups back then.
No, Rick! I never would have noticed that cup 🥤 😂 You continue to amaze me with your eye for detail. 😮
😁
Thank you.. I've seen this episode, NEVER saw the cup. I see it now.
In 1964, it's most likely a paper cup.
Also, when a real beach was used, especially in the first few episodes, it was the same beach used in The Planet of the Apes.
THE BOAT IS MISSING THE SS in front of MINNOW 😮
lol, yep, that is a cup all right! How funny 😆 Great job spotting that, Rick:)
Glad you enjoyed it 🍵
They didn't notice those things because the screens were much smaller back then. We had a 13 inch tv in the mid 70s and that was pretty good sized. They could never have predicted the screens would be so big now and such things would be relatively noticeable.
Eagle Eyes Rick strikes again!
Seen this episode several times. Never noticed that coffee cup.
Thanks for sharing!

Glad you enjoyed it
At :15 to :35, there are 3 different examples of the boat saying S.S. Minnow. Yet this boat, just says Minnow!
This boat was just a movie prop, the other boats were real boats with the name tag SS Minnow added to them for the opening film shots.
This boat is called just MINNOW. What happened to SS MINNOW?
Right. The paint is different, as well as the window placement. The beach prop is way different than the real boat.
Edited out by Newton Minow, the FCC head the boat was named for? (HaHa - but, also, how sad a person are you when the ship a group representing a microcosm of society are stranded upon is named after you?)
I did notice that too. On the begining it was the S.S. Minnow, like a stuck on sign. But on the beach it was Minnow, and painted on.
@@emersonaz Dawn Wells said she remembered a couple of early season 1 episodes filmed on either Malibu or Zuma beaches (both are in California) so one of those locations is probably where the Goodbye Island episode was filmed. Nothing is known about the Goodbye Island boat, whether they purchased an old boat and beat it up, or built a prop boat. The two SS Minnow boats seen in the b&w season opening were a rented boat in Honolulu used for the departure shots, and for the beached SS Minnow filmed in Kauai they purchased an old used boat and punched holes in it.
The cup was indeed Styrofoam. The rim was scrolled with Roman design and Alexander I think, on the face. Popular design in the 60s
The original Minnow that you see in the very opening of the show lives iin Vancouver, B.C. It was totally restored and was written up in the magazine "Wooden Boat." A gorgeous boat, for sure. I recall this episode, myself. I've recently read (and it does make sense) that Gilligan and the Skipper were based on Laurel & Hardy. if that's not true, it ought to be!
The Vancouver boat has been pretty thoroughly debunked, even though they make money passing it off as the Minnow (although no charge for charity events which is a good thing). The owners have shown no proof like actual records, and the boat looks very different than the boats seen in the opening credits when you compare them side by side. Their explanation for that is that the top half of the boat was later replaced, but that still doesn't account for the different hull shape. And lastly their story is full of holes (no pun intended), as there is no reason (or evidence) that CBS would have purchased a high-end boat for one day of filming, instead of simply renting one.
@@StevePemberton2 Not sure what proof is needed. That mag article was from over 20 years ago. Also I would think that the studio would rent the boat rather than buying it. I have no way of knowing if it was owned or rented but that isn't the point. The top half could have been replaced- with wooden boats it's like the grandfather's axe thing.
@@lawrencelewis2592 The second owner Scotty Taylor originated the Minnow story, he claimed the original owner told him there were rumors that it was the Minnow, so he says he checked the registration records and found that it was purchased for Gilligan's Island. But no proof of this was every provided. The current owner apparently bases his claim on what he was told about the boat. Neither said it was rented. Anyone can claim that their boat was the Minnow and explain that it doesn't look like the Minnow because it was later modified.
@@StevePemberton2 Well,I'm not gonna argue with you. I was just recalling an article in Wooden Boat magazine. But the article did go into some detail about its restoration and all I have to say is that was one gorgeous boat whether it was the Gilligan boat or not.
@@lawrencelewis2592 It is a super nice boat I agree. The brand is Wheeler which was a top notch yacht company in New York. Author Ernest Hemingway owned a Wheeler and famously lived on it while writing his novel The Old Man and the Sea. Unfortunately if you look at photos of Wheelers online you won't see any that look like the Minnow. If you watch the b&w and color season openings it's pretty clear that the Minnow in the show is a more average boat, not a fancy Wheeler luxury yacht which is not something that the Skipper would likely own anyway. The second owner's story that CBS purchased a brand new Wheeler yacht, just to film the opening scenes doesn't make sense. But back to the Wheeler the current owner totally restored it, one big change is they sent it back to Wheeler to replace the entire top section with the other style top that was available for this model, to give it more living space. Besides being great looking outside the interior is really nice.
Yes I have seen this episode and no I did not see that, what appears to be, paper cup. Great find. As usual you found something that was missed by most of us. Great segment on GI.
Oh thank you!
I remember those paper cups with a pattern that I can't describe that a soda with ice came in at the soda fountain way back in the day. Thanks Rick. I love it when you always say 'Be Hopeful!' Mike in Oregon
I remember this episode, I did see the cup.
And you never TOLD us?! David! WHY?!
I remember that episode but I never saw the cup. My guess is it was a paper cup from somebody drinking water, it was probably hot out there.
I never noticed the cup. But then again I couldn't stop looking at Mary-Ann.
⛵Also Rick the minnows steering wheel which Gilligan saves would later be used for Gilligan and Skippers Hut for seasons 2 and 3. 🛖🛥🏝🥥
As a kid watching GI, I often wondered if the Professor could have taken some nails from another part of the Minnow….the bridge, bunks etc.
I never understood why they were so desperate to get off the island....
Well, they all had lives back home they wanted to get *back* to after the "three hour tour" and any other vacay stuff was wrapped up. A curious observation: GI is likely the ONLY example we can see of "cooperative anarcho-socialism" working. But the reason is *because* it was only this *very* small group. Historically, the larger the group, the more who stray from being the productivity needed because "there's someone to pick up my slack" [sad Spoiler Alert: Human nature sucks]. In this small, isolated group who *must* be interdependent or die, even Ginger - whose highest skill set was related directly to being beautiful and acting - found ways to give back to the group, understanding that all needed to. The isolated, remote, and geo-eco perfect island they were beached upon would be fun and relaxing (to a degree) and refreshing for a few weeks. About the time you've gotten all your survival ducks in a row, you're realizing you really *want* o get home to indoor plumbing, a memory-foam mattress rather than a rope hammock for a bed, etc. [And: NO internet!! ( :-D ) ]
@@dennisanderson3895 , they were marooned in 1963, so they would have had to wait 30 years after getting off the island to get internet.
I'm with you, why?

These little mistakes are hilarious. Yet oddly endearing as well.
There used to be paper coffee cups with wings(?) attached that would fold out into a handle. That's what it looks like to me.
Amazing you noticed that.
Great job here Rick.. Bewitched has a ton of these mistakes, especially when they cut and paste the scene after a magic fingers snap or nose twitch. .
One of my favorite episodes, also.
The crew can build everything but a small dingy to get off the island. Amazing.
How did the millionaires get all there crap on a small boat like that?😂😅
It seems obvious to me, that boat is just a poorly fitting plywood mockup! Doesn’t even have windows. But, that was the low tech, low budget norm. I always loved corny scenes with space ships suspended by strings or horses clomping on a studio set. Those were the days! Loads of fun, laughter and innocence.
🏖Just sit right back...🛥🏝🥥🚣♂
Probably not styro at that time. The design looks like a dixie cup.
I agree with you.
Nice catch, but… In the opening title sequence, the Skipper is seen leaning on a ship’s wheel-shaped sign, & “Free lunches” are definitely offered to those who take his tour!
So…
Really not such a huge deal, Rick.
(Still… Good spotting.)
😁
When I was a kid I always liked MaryAnn. But as I got older and reevaluated, it dawned on me there was only one girl on that island who would even consider putting out. And she wasn't from Kansas and she wasn't in her 70's. Ginger for the win.
That would not be in any way shape or form a styrofoam cup, as cups are made of polystyrene, or a thick wax paper. The fact that cup has a design on it, indicates it was probably around 1964, and most likely paper as polystyrene cups was still bleach white as most paint has a nasty habit of eating polystyrene.
Have a look at the Beverly Hillbillies season 1, episode 5, 23:20 into the show near the end. Jed is hoisting granny up by pulling on a rope but at that moment that she starts back up Jed is feeding the rope up to have her descend instead of going up. It's quick but noticeable.
It’s nice black and white. If you look closely, they’re just shining huge bright lights into their faces. Some are even spotted on Gilligan on top of the boat. I wish the show was streaming somewhere or rerunning. It’s been a while since I’ve seen these.
It’s available on Tubi for free

I watched that episode many times and never noticed it. But sho nuff its right there for all to see. Ill never be able to unsee it now.
Hey Rick, thanks for pointing out that blooper. I had not noticed the cup before. I was a child during the 1960's and remember paper cups, but not styrofoam, until the 1970's. Another thing I noticed was the wording on the sign the Skipper is leaning on, which reads, SS Minnow, Island Charter, exotic trip, free lunches. That's the first time I noticed they offered free lunches. Perhaps the cup was left over from one of the free lunches.
The Professor could fix the radio when it needed fixing, but he couldn't repair the Minnow. But any attempt to get the castaways off the island would have ended the series. Same with The Incredible Hulk. If David Banner had cured himself of the Hulk, that series would have ended as well.
Now you know why he could not fix the minnow
@@ricknineg Gilligan would fumble it up somehow LOL!🙆🚤🏝🥥
They definitely had styrofoam cups back then. My uncle used to supply orange juice and lemonade to Disneyland back in the days when Gilligan’s Island first aired and he had styrofoam Sunkist cups all over his house. Although I highly doubt this was one of those cups. That would’ve been pretty cool though if it were!
@ 4:18, Mary-Ann is wearing heals on sand but is standing on a board so she doesn't sink in.
Also appears to be a foot or shoe below & to the left of the cup
Did you notice that when the ship is coming apart (don't get started on why that doesn't make sense), Gilligan is at the wheel. But he and the wheel are too low in the boat. He should be standing above the sides of the boat, not below.
Yes, and there’s no rudder attached
Hey Rick! Excellent content as usual. Question where was this episode actually filmed?? Seeing as it is a real beach/shoreline.
Thanks a lot keep up the good work!
Great question! I’d have to look more into it. I know they filmed the original unaired pilot in Hawaii. In the first aired episode they filmed that in Zuma Beach. So this could be either of the two places but I feel this is somewhere on the west coast of the US probably Southern California. Again I have to look into confirm this
I can't believe that I actually watched that show.
Looks like a retro Dixie paper cup. I remember the design from the 1960's.
Interesting episode. When all the boards flew off, no sign of a motor. What happened to that motor? If they were able to fix the boat, where they going to row the boat back to Hawaii? LOL
Also, how did the Minnow get so perfectly on the stands????
Never noticed the cup, so that’s a good catch. I always wondered what happened to the engine and did they ever salvage anything from it? 😀
What gets me is how little they tried to get the obvious details on the beach mockup look like the S.S. Minnow we see @0:17 and @0:29. Somehow, the "S.S." part of S.S. Minnow vanished as did that thick line of dark paint that runs from end to end of the ship just under the name Minnow on the beach mockup. The ship also gets much shorter once it is on the beach. Also, when you compare the one @0:29 with the one shown @1:39 they don't even remotely look the same. Maybe there was something a little stronger in that cup than coffee when they built this prop.
The PT-73 boat from McHales Navy was on an actual episode of Emergency where a worker on a Hollywood backlot was stuck underneath it while doing maintenance. They must have had a tight budget to use the backlot in an episode of Emergency. None the less a giant Easter Egg for McHales Navy fans.😊
I doubt it was a styrofoam cup in the early 60’s, probably a paper cup. More than likely a Lilly brand cup, Dixie at the time were mostly kitchen and bath and Lilly was commercial.
Looks like a Dixie Cup, those things were everywhere in the 1960's.
Agree
Hello from Detroit Michigan
Looks like a typical paper coffee cup from a sixties vending machine
It looks like it could be the Dixie Cup pattern that Dixie used to put around the top of their paper cups in the '60's?
I recall the episode, but not the cup, and now I'm noticing the complete lack of any rocks that might have caused the damage.
I love this show lol
It's a Dixie cup! The pattern around the top is their design. Great find!
That ships wheel wound up a lot lower than it really would be...
Gilligan tried to bail water out with that cup
It failed
Cool
