THE OLD FOOT IN THE MIRROR TRICK. LOL LOL
Good work, 99!
That's the third time I fell for it this week.
Never realized that. We all all loved that show as kids. Thanks, Rick.
I never noticed it either!
Good work, 99!
The irony is that mirrors were always pointed downward in TV and movies so the filming crew, lights, and cameras wouldn't show! 😂
Exactly! I didn’t mention it but you’re totally right. If it was pointed up, no reflection of the feet. Oooh the irony!
The small screens and low definition hid a lot of bloopers back then.
Didn’t know that - learn a new thing every day
I missed the image in the mirror by that much! 😂
Great video! Btw, I am 5’7 as well, but never asked someone to take their shoes off so I could look taller.
I still use that expression! 😂😂
Would you believe I missed it too?
I always knew that Maxwell Smart was shorter than just about everyone and that was part of what made the show funny - the little funny guy winning the day. (I first saw the show before I was 10 years old and grew up to be 5'7, 5'8 on a good day.)
I saw an interview with Barbara Feldon. She said she had to wear flats all the time and she developed a stoop in her posture because on camera she always had to hunch down to appear shorter. From Wiki Don Adams-> He joined the U.S. Marines in the early days of World War II. He saw combat in the invasion of Guadalcanal and was the only survivor of his platoon. He contracted blackwater fever and nearly died, remaining hospitalized for more than a year.
They also had height issues with Al Pacino and Rene Russo. In the film they had Pacino and Russo walking down the sidewalk where Russo had to walk 2 steps behind Pacino to get the heights balanced out.
Nice job Rick..👍
They used many similar tricks to adjust the height of the actors in _The Lord of the Rings_ , for example having John Rhys-Davies kneel in many shots, or Elijah Wood sit a few feet behind Ian McKellen on a cart.
In Blue Lagoon Brooke Shields stood in holes they dug in the sand because she was taller than her male co star.
Watching "Get Smart" in the sixties I often wondered at such small person (Don Adams) being such a tough guy. Years later I'd read about his military service in WWII, and I never doubted again.
Thank you so very much for the video.
They call the extreme version of that "Napoleon syndrome."
many short men over compensate for being short, basically. They try harder, strive more, etc
I’ve always loved this show!! In some episodes, I remember 99 was noticeably taller. I just admired 87 for not caring and actually ending up with her. She is so cute & beautiful!
I agree. Barbara Feldon is a cute and beautiful woman.
86.
@@Pygar2Yup! My mistake. Haha😅!
@@ternyb1391 missed it by THAT much. 🤏
I loved this show! I knew she was taller, but they did a good job of masking it !!
They really did do a good job!
I remember Barbara Feldon stating that sometimes she had to film with knees bent to make him look taller.
My favorite sitcom was Get Smart, and I agree that Max was about as much a bumbler as Don Knotts (Barney Fife), and Bob Denver (Gilligan). Of course Don's real life cousin, Robert Karvelas, who played Larrabee, was just as much of a bumbler as Max.
I didn't know they were related, cool fact.
Neither Did I!!!!@@kenlompart9905
Annnd….. loving it! 😂
Also didn't notice! Great video and really like how you find these hidden treasures!
Glad you like them!
1- my eyes never left Barbara
2 - Rick you are amazing spotting this
3 - there are pictures on the internet of Humphrey Bogart wearing really big LIFTS on his shoes for some of his movies
4 - my eyes never left Barbara
1.Haha
2. this comment is hilarious.
3. Thank you for watching
@@rickninegmy eyes never left Barbara either.
One of my all time favourite shows.
Mine too. it still holds up/funny, here in. 2024
Same situation with Lucy and Desi. Of course they had to perform in front of an audience, so they had fewer tricks available besides Desi's huge heels. You covered that one really well earlier.
On Three's Company they did the opposite for Mr and Mrs Roper. They wanted Audra Lindley to tower over Norman Fell to emphasize the domineering wife / henpecked husband comedic theme, so they gave her a tall hairdo and heels.
The nice detail with the last example is that it's something the character might do as well.
Like I've said many times....Eagle eye Rick does it again. Wow.
🦅 👁
When it first came out, my Father watched that show faithfully, so I did too.
...and LOVING IT!
Fun catch. Having the character be short would make sense though, as he has a bit of an overconfident Napoleon thing going on.
I love Get Smart. I loved this episode. I never noticed it! Thanks Rick.
Very welcome
I did see a documentary where Barbara talked about all of the contortions she used to go through. Bending knees, standing on the sides of her feet, etc. A real trooper.
I knew about Don Adam's height, but never noticed it in this episode.
I love that this first aired on my birthday Oct 2, 1965!
I noticed in many cases, the height of agent 99 would change.
They also:
Shot at an upwards angle and had the people they wanted taller to be closer to the camera.
In westerns, they used to have different height doors so that the women could be framed in a taller door way.
They used forced perspective to make streets look longer and would in those cases often place the hero a little further from the camera. The part of the set near the woman was taller and the bit near the male hero would be sorter as part of the forced perspective thing. They also dressed up children to put in the background.
They also would sometimes have a character stand on a box to get them framed right.
BTW: Don Adams was an extremely physically capable person. A lot of those falls and bumping into stuff he did required a lot of ability that most people simply don't have. He could appear to fall over in a scene and repeat it several times if needed.
Never noticed, Thank you
She told an interviewer that in reality he was 5-8, she was 5-10, so she either took her shoes off, or he was standing on a create, other times she's have to be moving in the scene so the height wasn't noticeable. , she said Don would often joke about it in bloopers.
Watching your videos are always fun. I can watch something a hundred times and never notice these things until you point them out. It's loads of fun to discover these things.....your sorta helping me to "get smart" in my viewing of the good old shows...thanks Rick.
I love the Art and Cinematography of Theater, and your videos give me more info to use when studying all these wonderful pieces of TV history - Thank you!
My pleasure!
Excellent video. I love Hollywood movie magic. I grew up watching Get Smart. Thanks for the flash back.
Ha! Ha! Thats a fabulous find! I love your observations regarding things I’ve never seen even though I’ve watched these classic shows over and over. Thanks for posting!
Huge Get Smart fan, one of my favorite shows of the 60s, especially the early season (pre ugly late 60s/early 70s styles). I have heard Barbara Feldon comment on she would intentionally slump so she would look shorter than Don. I didn’t see the shoes reflection you shared but not surprising. Smaller leading men from Alan Ladd to Desi Arnaz to Sylvester Stallone and Tom Cruise have stood on things, wore lifts, etc. Keep the Get Smart episodes coming. What a great show. Do one about the brilliant Bernie Kopell. What a character Ziegfried was. Thanks for the fun facts.
Michael J Fox is another short actor.
The normal trick is to use a Scully Box (named after Gillian Anderson's character who sometime had to stand on a box for some scenes in the X-Files to appear taller).
You will also notice that when they are in the Chiefs office, 99 is usually sitting on the desk, which lowers her height
Missed it by - that much!
I watched this in 1965. Analog TVs were smaller and poor resolution compared to what we have today. Unfair to call bloopers for details that were not visible during time of their production.
Loved this show
It’s always cool to learn how certain things were done with shows like this as today, special effects and practical effects have come along way compared to back when Get Smart was made. Thank you for the video Rick, I hope you’re doing well, keep up the great work. Take care!
That’s a GREAT catch! 🕵️♂️🔍
Hello Rick, I never noticed this blooper before, thanks for pointing it out!!! I know that in television & film they've been doing little tricks for years to make the man appear taller. A great example is your video showcasing Desi Arnaz' s special shoes!!! As always, excellent video!!! 👍👍🙂
Many many thanks!
She has stated she had calluses on her ankles from trying to look shorter. I’ve been fortunate enough to establish a sort of friendship with her the past few years and she is truly lovely.
Your videos… and loving it!
I remember Nick at Nite used to have a little commercial that showed how their heights changed throughout the series
I never understood this and know they did this for a lot of "leading men" who were not as tall as Hollywood wanted. We know people are of different heights, including male role models. Why not just get on with the story?
Thank you for this neat bit of trivia.
Great show. My co-worker and I would try to say things just like agent 86 just to have a good time at 3AM in the morning.
Thanks for taking the time to create this video. 👍🇺🇸
Feldon said that in many scenes she had to crouch slightly so as not to appear taller than Adams, and in fact often ended up with sore knees after several takes.
I grew up with the cartoon Inspector Gadget.. Great episode Rick.
TY. Interesting.
Nice find!
this was interesting, I never noticed. God Bless and take care Rick.
Very good.
An interview with Barbara Feldon I saw she shared several ways she adapted to look shorter so Max would appear taller: The kick off your shoes one you show here. And hip slant /slouch to appear shorter. Max on a box. Seen here but not pointed out: several times in your show clip they position Barbara behind Max: from the camera 2-shot angle she seems shorter. Plus she may be bending her {unseen} knees.
Didn't catch it, but it proves what we've known all along: Barbara Feldon was stunning from head to foot!
I always thought it added to the humor to the show that Smart was shorter then 99.
A lot of famous actors had to hide how short they actually were. It's very common. Also a lot of tv and movie sets were actually much smaller than they appeared.
Never saw that bit. Good spotting it.
Since you mentioned westerns: during the Universal Studios tour, the guide will pint out that the doors in one side of the western set street are larger that the doors on the other side of the street. Men would be filmed next to the small doors and women would be filmed next to the large doors.
Wow, never would’ve noticed that - hilarious! 😂
Very interesting, Rick. I’ve never seen this show. I think I’d like to try it out. Thanks for sharing ❤
Hope you like it!
I always found it funny how much emphasis people put on their height.
I'm wondering if her foot in the mirror would even be clear on a 1960s era TV set with much less clarity than we are accustomed to today. I've seen examples in other shows where there would obviously be wires running up the pants leg of an actor (like for a hidden mic or to trigger a special effect). They didn't worry about it back then, not anticipating the advent of modern HDTVs.
Great catch. I never saw it.
In the same reflection, right next to her bare foot, you also see the wooden block next to her foot that DA would stand on when they were close together to make him appear taller.
Barbara mentions this in her book Getting Smarter.
“Missed it by that much!”
I had such a crush on Barbra.
I've never noticed this before, but I have read where Barbara Feldon said she would slouch a little when standing next to Don so she wouldn't look taller.
Rick,
Only YOU could find such a blooper! As I've said before, you are THE Sherlock Holmes of Classic TV. And this is why your loyal subscribers stay subscribed, "like" your videos and keep coming back to you.
I would really like to watch Get Smart again. Used to watch it in reruns all the time as a kid, and then I believe Nick at Nite aired episodes in the '90's.
Rick, do you know if this series is available on a streaming service or is hard copy DVD my only option?
Thanks again and Happy 2024!
Be hopeful,
Paul +
Many many thanks! GOOD Work, 99!
@@ricknineg
Rick,
What about my question above? Streaming? DVD?
I don’t think i noticed the difference 😮especially back then when it aired . 👍📺 Thanks Rick ! I’m currently watching I Love Lucy “s episode The Tour ” 😂
🚎
You know it 😂
Every time l see Don Adams l think of Tennessee Tuxedo.
Alan Ladd always stood on a box.
Barbara Feldman in an interview years ago said that she had to slouch a lot to make Maxwell Smart look taller
“Shall I describe it to you, or would you like me to find you a box?”
I must have been to busy laughing to notice.
That eagle eye of yours has made for some fun videos!
I'm not sure if it makes as much of a difference in the Maxwell Smart persona if he's shorter than Barbara "99" Feldon, since the premise of the show was that he was a klutz. But Hollywood is Hollywood.
I have met Sigourney Weaver. She is easily 6’1” and she started opposite diminutive Tim Allen in the film Galaxy Quest. The difference in height in that film dwarfs the difference between Adams and Feldman.
Tom cruise won’t go anywhere without his apple box to stand on
Don Adams was a house on my news paper route when I was a kid.
Years ago I saw an interview with Barbara Feldon. She said she would bend at the hip when she was standing next to Adams.
They could have just used a soap box... missed it by that much.
Google Don Adams to see his war record in WWII. He was a decorated veteran, a D.I., and his commanding officer called him the toughest Marine ever,
I loved this show… 99 was cute too
After Get Smart was out of production I think that Barbara Feldon even admitted on some talk show that she was required in some scenes to crouch down(bend her knees) so that she would not appear to be taller than Don Adams.
Always noticed that women in Frank Sinatra’s films always wore flats, and very squashed down hairdos in eras of very big hair.
Sometimes you can hear a creaking apple crate in Tom Cruises movies! 😁
On a tour of the Universal Studios Backlots they drive through an area known as "Western Town" - One side of the streets allows male actors of the time to appear taller, while the opposite side would make them appear shorter. And for close-up shots, yes female actresses would either remove their shoes or wear "flats."
I was 11 days old when this episode came out.
Still being done all the time in films and TV shows. Actors remove shoes or bend their knees or stand on quarter or half apple boxes depending on whether they are meant to look large or small in the frame, which sometimes changes within the same scene
You'll also notice that Barbra Feldon would also slouch when standing next to Don. Or as one of your screen shots show, there would be Don closer to the camera, and Barbra standing further away from the camera. But to spot bare feet in the mirror is an interesting catch
TVcrazyman beat you to that mirror flub in his video "60's Television Bloopers and Goofs" from four days ago. :) You still did an excellent video though. Thanks for sharing.
Just curious, Rick, is this something that would never have been seen on the original NBC 35mm film broadcast to a standard colour/b&w 1960's TV?
From my understanding, many of these for-the-first-time-seen bloopers only became noticeable with due to remastering, digitization, HD quality and the visible area difference between 4:3 TVs and 16:9 TVs.
I like this channel and the Tvcrazyman channel.😉
I remember when I was a kid, they said Brooke Shields was so much taller than the male co-star in Blue Lagoon that in many scenes she is standing in a small hole or depression in the sand.
Maxwell drove a Sunbeam, Tiger, and a Karmann Ghia.
According to the Universal back lot tour, the whole set in old western movies was designed to make the hero look larger than life. The saloon doors and building facades were built just a little under sized in order to make the hero appear larger. They'd also put a man on a box or a woman in a trench in order to make the man appear to be larger than the woman. It's easy to fool the audience when you control the perspective.
When first seeing this show, I was too young to care who was taller, but Barbara Felton always seemed taller. It looks like they also used different camera angles to not make the height difference too obvious.
I think this is more common than you think. I remember seeing the filming of a show and the female presenter was rather short. When she would be beside the male presenter , they would have her standing on a step (about 12 inches high) to make their heights a lot closer
I loved the moment (in another episode) when we find out that KAOS is a Delaware corporation. :)
I haven’t seen Get Smart since I was a kid. I never paid any attention to anybody’s height unless they were really tall or short. I never did notice that Don Adams was shorter than her.
Adams would also stand on a box or step, and often Feldman would bend her knees a bit. They do similar things with Tom Cruise. He too is only 5' 6" or 5' 7", although he is likely shorter with spine compression over the years.
I remember an interview someone did with her, and she addressed the height issue saying she would have to do tricks with her posture and stand on her ankles, which I think (hope) was an exaggeration. I find it strange that casting agents wouldn't choose actors based on their height preferences. That is to say, that if they wanted Don Adams and needed him to appear taller, then cast shorter people for the other roles.
Good point! I just think casting believed that both actors were perfect except for their height. Hollywood knows that you can easily make changes and adjustments to fix the height issue. It is harder to make adjustments to acting talent
@@rickninegI heard a story about Tom Cruise.
Cruise was doing a "Mission Impossible" film.
As he owns the film rights, he gets to cast who he wants for the films.
In one, he had to run through a crowd in New York.
Cruise being short, the extras for the crowd scene towered over him, so they were let go and the extras for the scene were only hired if they were the same height or taller than him.
I meant "same height or shorter than him".
