  • HOW TO CHANGE OIL ON A 2012 KAWASAKI KX450F FOUR STROKE DIRTBIKE: Enduro Skills
    Kawasaki KX450F Service manual posted at the bottom.
    Knowing how to replace oil on a four stroke dirt bike is a completely vital part of maintaining your thumper and getting the most out of your bike. It's truly essential you change the oil religiously on a 4 stroke as there's a ton of moving components inside the engine that have to be lubricated.
    In case you slip into the nasty habit of neglect your bike will find yourself on the sideline of not being able to ride or race since your bike is completely broken down and is ready to strip you of all of your hard earned coins for an engine rebuild.
    You have to basically read the owner's manual for the exact procedure for your exact brand/model of dirt bike as there's specific engine designs available requiring certain methods. Additionally, a few present day four stroke dirt bikes have one oil compartment and others have two. One for the transmission oil and one for for the engine oil. It is simple enough to find out whether your dirt bike has one or two oil compartments by counting the oil filler caps on your bike.
    Here's my steps to guide you on the right path of doing a successful oil change on a four stroke.
    I will be demonstrating this on my 2012 Kawasaki KX450F.
    First, run the dirt bike for a couple of minutes till the engine oil is nice and warm. This is to help it drain faster and better.
    Second, put a oil pan underneath the dirt bike and take off the oil filler cap. Unscrew the drain bolt on the bottom of the engine and allow the oil pour out. Tilt the dirt bike side to side to get all of the remaining oil out the engine.
    Third step, carefully take off the oil filter cover and remove the original filter. Don't forget the way it all sits in there when you take it off. Change with a brand new filter and ensure you rub a bit of new oil on the filter lip to guarantee an excellent seal.
    4 STROKE OIL FILTER
    Spray the inner passage ways of the filter cap with brake cleaner to eliminate any gunk and debris that could block the flow of oil. Put the oil filter cover back in its place remembering not to over-tighten the bolts! If you happen to strip the threads you will kiss your $$ good-bye. Additionally, take a look at the rubber O ring/s - if they are worn and loose you have to change 'em.
    Tighten the drain bolt and top up with clean, good grade oil. You will likely want a funnel to stop you from spilling it all over. Look at your dirt bike guide for precise quantities although it ought to be written on the engine casing. You must take off the oil level test bolt after you've had the bike running to ensure oil flows out, signaling you've got sufficient oil in there.
    Tip: Use the best quality performance synthetic oil, doing so will save you money in the end but might cost a little extra up front.
    Wipe all mess away from the oil filler cap and tighten again in place.
    Now, whether or not your dirt bike has one or two oil compartments the method is very alike. You should change both engine and transmission oil at the same time, use transmission oil for the gearbox and synthetic high-quality engine oil 10W-40 for the engine compartment.
    On dirt bikes which have a dip stick connected to the oil cap to check the oil level - heat the engine up first then unscrew the dip stick. Clean dipstick with rag and put it back. Remember do not screw it back in. Doing so will give you a way better reading of your oil level.

    Just a tip, brake cleaner will make rubber o rings and such swell up and they are junk. Listen to this man when he says to take the o rings off before using brake cleaner.

      @EnduroSkills  Před 2 lety +1

      You are correct, I prefer to just give it a wipe with a rag without using brake cleaner

    I have a 2011 kx450f. Should there be a spring behind the oil filter? I seen a video on a 2013 and he made it clear to watch for and not lose the spring. My bike dont have one just wondering if yours dose?

    • @EnduroSkills
      @EnduroSkills  Před 3 lety

      Good question, yes there is a spring. It keeps the oil filter pressed in place while riding and very important to have it otherwise it could fall off the port in the cover and oil will flow freely bypassing the filter altogether. Here's a link I found for it, if you google "2011 kx450f oil filter spring" you'll get a few different sites but I'm sure dealership can get it too

    Just bought the same model, kind of a newbie rider, how much oil changes or air filters or maintenance does it take to make these bike last? I’m a trail/road rider so I really don’t wanna blow my engine 😂 great bike and video by the way 👌🏽

      Thx man, the manual says every 15 hrs but I'll change it every 10 hrs. I ride trails usually, bike has been pretty solid it's got 100 hrs now and starts 2nd kick after being stored all winter. Gotta love that fuel injection

    • @EnduroSkills
      @EnduroSkills  Před 6 lety

      A hardware store or large department store should carry it. A 1/4" socket set should have all you need to do most of the work on these bikes

      www.kawasakipartshouse.com/oemparts/a/kaw/500b9684f8700223e479a749/oil-filter you'll need part 132 and 132b if you're looking for the bolts

      The oil drain bolts that are under the bike, not at the side of the case.
