- Today at Ugly Truck, we're setting up the LS radiator, cooling fans, and cooling system... the easy way! On this square body Chevy, we use the core support from the 2005 Suburban donor truck to make a mounting plate, and with the help of some (SEVERAL) brackets, we complete the rest of the cooling system using all stock 2005 Suburban parts. This means that, no matter where you are, you can walk into a parts store and walk out with the exact hose or radiator you need, and it bolts right in... EASY SLEAZY!

Nice work. I basically used the same pieces on my '68 C10 except I used a water pump from a 2010 Camaro 6.2. Not only was the outlet on the drivers side of the engine so you can use a very short upper hose but it included a tapped boss on the passenger side for a belt tensioner pulley if you don't use the stock belt routing. All that was needed was to cut off the mounting ear on the alt/PS support where the stock idler pulley is mounted.

Just found this video, I have been running a late model Chevy truck radiator in my 72 for years. What I did differently was I found the smaller radiator fit in the core support easier, I cut off the plastic pegs on the bottom and used the original style mounts. The upper mounts on the radiator were used to mount my ls1 fan to the radiator with the help of a home made bracket adapter.

Did you use the upper and lower shroud out of the doner truck?
@@chalecharros7689 I’m using an electric fan, the fan is off of a 97 to 02 f body. I had to make some brackets to mount it.

I love how you explain every job on your list step by step and not just switching from eg radiator to injector wireing and heater hose. One step at a time. thats a great help thanks some of us are not smart and need simple explanations. 😃😃😃 My question to you is. On a early to mid 80s how would you support the rad being its a different bracket style than this yellow truck your working on? Peace i meen is the shroud on top. like the icing on the cake. lol

Working on my semi today , some hard to reach fittings behind the dash I thought dang it I bet that crows would work to reach them and sure enough it did .

I’ve watched quite a few of your videos on LS stuff very informative. I’m curious you didn’t show you hooking up the large hose on the overflow tank, I picked up of modern tank at the junkyard the other day off of a Sunfire and I thought I was gonna put it into the lower radiator hose (T) is how it was on the sun fire, but yours looks like it’s going to the LS water pump, I searched the previous video to see if I missed you hooking that up but I didn’t see it
Hey T Dubb. I use the original style coolant tank and the hoses from the donor. The one you are describing runs from the water pump, y's off and goes to the tank and also the return side of the heater core. There is another one off of the water pump that goes to the inlet of the heater core. We haven't done a video talking about that but probably should. I hope that answered your question. I am doing a swap on a 71 Caprice and my radiator is much narrower than the one out of my 04 Silverado donor. I was wondering if there was another GM radiator narrower that I could run so I can still use the factory cooling system with all the factory components, instead of re inventing the wheel trying to figure out how to incorporate my stock '71 cooling system with my 5.3 swap, id rather keep it as original to the 2004 tahoe set up as possible.... Thank you in advance for any input, as always I appreciate your channel more than you know it's like having a LS guru to run and get all your questions answered.... Much appreciated
Hey Matthew. There is a radiator that is a little over 28 inches for a core width that might work for you. Spectra Premium CU2334. They did not have a electric fan setup for these radiators, they we're all mechanical. We used it in Emily's 70 because of it's size. It might be your best option. Tell me some stuff about this. 78 truck like yours. I ran the factory clutch fan on my engine. Then put a 75 triple core radiator and radiator 75 fan shroud. All of it fit perfect. I ran a $30 upper hose adapter with bleed port built in. And used factory upper hose.
When I tried to use the 2003 radiator from the Tahoe, it was too tall.
I haven’t run the truck yet. I don’t see why the older triple core with clutch fan won’t work.
Can you tell me why you didn’t go a route like this.
Your video did open up ideas on what I can do with electric fans now that I know the stuff fits as well as it does.
Hello Jack. I like to use the radiator from the newer donors mainly because I will try to go with a electric fan. That fan gives me more room and options for my air intake. It also makes the engine warm up quicker and maintains a more even engine temp with AC on or off. It absolutely makes the AC work better and it doesn't rob any HP aside from the alternator load which is next to nothing. The overflow system from earlier on rely on the radiator cap to keep a cooling system full, in order for that to happen there can not be any coolant leaks at all. If there is a leak on a overflow system, it may just run hot and never create the vacuum needed to pull that coolant back into the radiator. On a sealed system, that coolant is just there to use and the LS just don't leak like the earlier motors. I build these for customers also, so I will use the low coolant indicator that is built into that coolant tank so they can get a warning if the coolant drops to that level. The way you have done yours will work perfectly fine. We did our 74 k10 the same and it works great. Thanks for watching, commenting and reading this extremely long reply. Thanks for the video! On the Stock top plate shroud cover is that out of the Suburban you took the LS out of? or the 1978 Squarebody? Not sure I have seen that top mounting plate before?
That piece is original to the 1978 C10. I believe we just added a couple tabs on the back to hold the radiator, and bolted it to the stock location. It worked and looked great!

On these I use the condenser from a 85 model c10. I heat the tubes on it and bend them out a little further out to go around radiator. I use 85 high side line going to evaporator and then I use a Murray 55468 suction and discharge line assembly.

What do you do with the steam vent by the intake? Did you plug it into the radiator by the rad cap? I mean its essentially just like a 99-06 silverado ?
Yep, this setup is just like the donor and uses all donor parts. That steam line runs to the port on the radiator just like on a Silverado. Thanks for watching! --Emily and Jerry
have you ever tried using square body accessory engine parts, like radiator ,puke bottle, powersteering pump n brackets, one wire alt. I'm to keep from using as many of donor trucks parts, as they cost more than square body parts do. also do you run DEX-COOL or glychol based coolant? temp. of thermostat?
No, I have always used the ls parts. The work involved in keeping with the original square body parts would out weigh the cost of the parts. I run orange DEX-COOL in them. Thanks Jerry
Just seen your video on this great video! I’m in the process of swapping a 68 c10 and I was curious what upper mount do you use to put in the stock Yukon radiator Iv got a complete Yukon xl for my swap
Hello Jesse. I use the top portion of the radiator support from the donor and modify them to work as my upper radiator support. It ends up bolting to the radiator and the shroud like normal and then fastens to the trucks core support at its original mounting holes. We should probably do a video on that. Thanks for watching. How did you do the transmission lines??
On most of our swaps we use the original donor transmission lines. We end up cutting about just a few inches off of them and then putting a new flare on the ends. You can buy new transmission lines from most parts stores and just cut and flare them to fit. Thanks for tuning in! --Jerry and Emily
Jerry, I’m LS swapping an ‘87 squarebody. It has had a new radiator installed in it. Would it hurt for me to use that radiator? I have a 5.3 LS. I will also install a dual electric fan shroud.

Just watched your video on swapping the 5.3 into the 1970 c10 and was wondering if that truck has the 28” wide radiator or if its the wider one that this truck got?
We appreciate you watching our stuff! The 70 has this same radiator in it. It fits a little different, but we used the same lower mount concept. I still have zip ties for upper mounts... I want to make a shroud that covers the space between the grill and rad support, and I keep thinking someday I'll come up with some amazing idea to do it in one piece. So far no luck! 🤣🤣 --Emily
Roughly what temp should these 5.3 swapped trucks run at? My 86 C10, 2002 5.3 with a stock mechanical fan, reusing the C10's original fan shroud and radiator runs about 200-210 running around town. It has the stock 187 degree thermostat. Just seems warmer than it should be. Already replaced the stock fan clutch with a new one. Thanks for all your vids. They def helped doing my swap.
The stock program for most of these that I have seen is going to turn the fan on at 200 degrees. When you have your computer programmed you can have the fan controlled at whatever temperature you like. I believe the higher running temps these days are due to emissions and fuel economy. I personally leave them at 200. Thanks

Yeah I've got an auto meter temp gauge in the passenger side head back by #8, and it reads about 10 degrees higher than the factory temp sensor at the front of the driver's side head. Guess I'm just used to my old SBCs running right at 180. Told the parts guy the other day that my holding onto the SBC must be like the rodders that held onto their Flatheads in the 50s. Great video ugly garage. Im using your vids for my 74 k5 blazer 4x4. Do you know if the stock radiator will work with the th400 trans hook ups. Also what's your opinion on coolant type. I'm leaning toward oe orange dex-cool
If your using the ls radiator you will have different fittings at the radiator. It sounds like you are putting in a LS and keeping the 400 transmission? I use orange dexcool. Thanks Jerry

Yeah I'm keeping the th400 Trans and got a 5.3 lm7 I will be dropping in. I'm keeping the 400 trans cause it's passenger side drop for the drives haft.

What ac condenser do you use in ls swap square body
I have been replacing them with a new condenser that would been from the donor vehicle. I have to modify the radiator support a bit but it works better and I can use the donor high pressure line to compressor. Thanks. Jerry
Do you have a code on how to go from engine fan to electric fan if you swap didn't come with electric fans ?
The oem harness already has the plug on it to plug into the cooling fan relay harness and the computer is already set up to turn the fans on for whatever your donor vehicle was even if it had mechanical fan. When you have computer programmed you can let them know you want to run electric fans and what temperature you would like to have fans on and off. I run 180 degree thermostats and just let them know that and they adjust accordingly. Thanks Eric. Let us know how it goes. Jerry

If your swapping into a 83 chevy wagon you might just want to use it's original radiator and see if you can't find some radiator hoses that would line up ok. Adding a steam line to the upper hose also. Thanks Jerry

Each one of them is a little different depending on exactly where the reservoir is sitting and the make and model that your working with. What are you swapping?

That is the top piece that I cut out of the donor radiator support. I rivet a bracket onto it that I custom make and then the radiator and fan bolt together like they would in the 2004 donor truck. It ends up looking pretty nice I think. Jerry
